There are reports on Twitter this evening of Newcastle fans being attacked ahead of the FC Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle United game in the Ukraine. The Gazette have pubished a few of the tweets (below) suggesting that Police have witnessed and failed to intervene when Metalist fans charged at Newcastle supporters before the game, whilst another indicates that a few fans have been taken to hospital with injuries.
From the Shields Gazette;
Andy Powell (@andy5powell) tweeted: “Loads of trouble before the game. Metallist charging Newcastle fans. Police letting them do it #nufc.
And Craig Grieve (@craiggrieve4) tweeted: “No police escort for #nufc fans in ukraine! Shockin! There “ultras” knickin our flag and ambushin innocent fans!! Stay safe #nufc lads.”
Anthony Trotter (@Trotts01) said: “Couple off to hospital here carnage post game could be interesting after they’ve had 20 mins to mobilise #nufc #kharkiv."
Also;
"Anthony Trotter (trotts01) Newcastle fan's taking a canny kicking outside away metro station be careful"
The trouble comes within 24 hours of Tottenham Hotspur fans being assaulted in Lyon whilst they got into the Europa spirit ahead of their game this evening.
The Ukrainian "ultras" are known for their violence and racist views, with much publicity surrounding them prior to the 2012 World Cup with Amnesty International Ukraine Campaigner Max Tucker last year warning England fans;
"Not only will they have to deal with violent football hooligans who deliberately target gay people and people of ethnic minorities, they will also face an extremely corrupt police force who have a track record of beating and mistreating people because of their sexual orientation."
The FSF, Kevin Miles responded;
"The FSF is fully committed to ensuring that football is accessible to all sections of the community and no-one should face the threat of discrimination or violence while involving themselves in a football tournament."
Reports suggest that the violence rumoured to have taken place ahead of tonight's game was from Metalist Ultras.
Fans should take care after the game, with the final result potentially causing a point of conflict.
