Player Profile: Gaetan Bong Songo - Newcastle Lodge Bid

Newcastle United have placed a bid for Valenciennes FC defender Gaёtan Bong Songo, according to Valenciennes club president Jean-Raymond Legrand.  Bong was born in Sakbayeme, Cameroon, and has played for the Cameroon international team. The 24 year old has French citizenship and began his career in the youth team at FC Metz before going to Tours FC on loan for the 2008/09 season.

In 2009 he signed a 4 year contract with Valenciennes for an undisclosed fee. The club are currently sixth in Ligue 1 and whilst Newcastle have lodged an offer, the club will not allow him to leave without having adequate cover.

Legrand told le10sport.com;

"Newcastle are very interested, they have made an offer.

"We will wait and see but I will not sell players unless I can replace them."

French reports indicate that Newcastle are looking to cover the imminent departure of Davide Santon to AC Milan, however the 22 year old has taken steps to distance himself from speculation by insisting he is happy at Newcastle and happy with the team he has around him.
