Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Wigan Athletic

By Tyne-Talk
December 2 2012

Newcastle United host Wigan Athletic tomorrow night, on the back of four defeats and two draws from their last six games in all competitions, whilst Wigan travel to St James' Park having lost three, drawn one and won two of their last six games.

Both sides have a high number of injuries to contend with. Newcastle are without Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Steven Taylor (hamstring), Yohan Cabaye (groin) Ryan Taylor (knee), Dan Gosling (knee) and Haris Vuckic (knee), whilst Shola Ameobi (groin) and Gabriel Obertan (toe) both face late fitness tests.

James Perch is also unavailable after receiving his 5th yellow card of the season. He will carry out a 1 match suspension, whilst Jonas Gutierrez and Cheik Tiote are both just one yellow card away from their own domestic bans.

Wigan are without Shaun Maloney (groin), Ivan Ramis (hamstring), Ryo Miyaichi (ankle), Ben Watson (broken leg), Albert Crusat (knee) and Antolin Alcaraz (groin), whilst David Jones (calf), Gary Caldwell (hamstring) and James McArthur (thigh) all face late fitness tests.

With both teams going into the game just two points away from the bottom three and only goal difference separating the two, we expect to see both sides to be playing for the win.

Fact: Newcastle go into the game hoping to prevent a 3rd successive home defeat.

Fact: Danny Simpson has lost just one game against Wigan Athletic in four appearances.

We can't sit back in the 2nd half or we will concede and lose.

Need to keep going forward.

Yes Annie, it was getting well beyond finger-nails bitten to the quick time (Sm7) And quite a goal by the youngin to boot!
Let's just hope Demba isn't hurt too bad and Pards plays the youth squad for the Europa match to avoid any further injuries! (Sm154)

I must say i've not been one of these fans that has been crying out for 4-3-3 but i was glad to see it when sky sports announced the team! i was quite suprised and thought sky had got it wrong when they had Marveux in midfield and jonas up front i thought it would have been the other way round, however it worked perfectly with marveux making those runs through the centre!

That was exactly the type of win we needed to boost confidence although i would have preffered it if it had been against 11 men rather than 10!

It was dissapointing the way we let them back into the game in the second half!

I thought the likes of Simpson, Santon, Marveux had a really good game and its probably the best performance i've seen from Anita, Ferguson looked really good when he came on as did Bigi who opened his scoring with a goal of the month contender! Sameobi still thinks he can run through players and i think he could do with a few games in the reserves.

Finally Williamson, he's recently started to become a liability, i know people are going to say he's always been a liability but its becoming more obvious now, poor tackling poor positioning, poor heading, poor backpasses at the minute everything he does is putting the team under pressure and i lost count how many times last night Simpson and Colo got him out of trouble!

Over the moon with the result and it was worth braving the cold to go and see it. Ground wasnt full, which is sort of understandable with it being on tv and xmas round the corner, but a lot of the home fans were still bast.ard moaning. Christ, what do they want.

Agreed Mental, we looked so much better with the 4-3-3 and it definitely helped Anita. I thought he did great and was my MOTM. He was getting everywhere and really got us moving, along with Marvaux.

Santon was very good until he went off and I thought Cisse really put in a shift and deserved a goal.

I hear you mental about Williamson but I didnt think he did too bad last night. Like you say, he will produce a mistake in every match. We definitely need a CB in January, but as much because of Taylor being a bit injury prone than the form of Williamson.

Its more than a mistake every match at the minute though, as i said everything he is doing is putting the rest of the team under pressure, his clearances are just as far up the pitch as he can get it, when he heads it clear he doesn't do it with any conviction or to a teammate, he's continually playing poor backpasses to krul who then has to try and deal with it! The ball comes to him and he jut does anything he can to get rid of it as soon as he can! When he's attacking set pieces he should be winning a lot more than he does and the ones he does win he's miss timed his jump so the ball hits the wrong part of his head and goes all over the place and for a guy his size he's far too eaily muscled of the ball by guys half his size!

I have even got to the point where i wish Perch was playing instead of him!

I think it was the Norwich game, we won it anyway, I came away slagging Williamson off for what I thought was a@#$%&performance, (basically just hoofing the ball long to anyone and putting everyone under pressure)

Then I came on here the next day and our resident Polish idiot had him as MOTM, so I have watched him closely ever since.

Personally I think he's a liability, but I will know doubt get personal abuse and told I am wrong for this

Luckily the resident polish idiot is keeping a low profile at the minute!

I honestly dont know how anyone can defend him at the minute and i would love someone to come on here and tell me something that he actually does well!

I was on another site yesterday (I wasn't posting I was reading an article and noticed someone that used to be on here)

Anyway the gist of the article was that Jonas is finished and should be retired, where Marveaux should now be a regular starter in his place.

Is it just me or is this a tad knee jerk?

I'll admit he was decent on Monday, but I think I would like to see a lot more of him before I am willing to write off Jonas.

I agree Dave, 1 good performance doesn't make someone else redundant. He signed a new 4 year deal in September.
