Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Wigan Athletic v Newcastle Utd

Newcastle United travel to Wigan Athletic this afternoon, on the back of six consecutive wins and five clean sheets from their last six games. Whilst Newcastle are aspiring for a fourth place finish, with third in sight if they take advantage of their game in hand over Arsenal, Wigan are fighting for relegation, and the closer to the end of the season, the harder they will fight.
They go into the game on their back of four big wins against Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Stoke City from their last six games, with just two defeats against Fulham and Chelsea. Today’s game could prove to be very interesting.
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew will be pleased to have given up top spot on the Premier League Injury Table for having the highest number of players side-lined. The club have had the highest number of first team injuries for weeks and have still overcome this to win games.
However, Pardew continues to be without Sylvain Marveaux (groin) who has returned to training but is not fit to play, Steven Taylor (Achilles), Peter Lovenkrands (thigh), Haris Vuckic (knock), and Sammy Ameobi (knee).
Yohan Cabaye (ankle) and Gabriel Obertan (foot) are expected to have late fitness tests ahead of today’s game.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is likely to be without Franco Di Santo, who picked up a calf injury against Fulham last week and Ronnie Stam (hamstring), but is expected to welcome back Hugo Rodallega (knee) who has been absent for seven weeks and Albert Crusat (calf).
Alan Pardew has already said ahead of the game that he expect it to be a lively affair with a lot of action in the final 25 minutes.
Wigan could win their last four games of the season, but still see themselves relegated, unless other results go in their favour over the coming weeks. Whilst Newcastle could, finish third providing other results also go in their favour, a position Pardew has now publically announced that they are striving for.
Pardew told Sky Sports yesterday afternoon;
“We have got a possibility of finishing third, so that is what we are going to try and do.”
When asked how likely that would be, he replied;
"Difficult. We have some tough games. All the games are tough now, though. When you come up against these bottom sides, they are fighting for their lives.
We have got that on Saturday and it is going to make it very difficult."
Fact: Newcastle United have beaten Wigan 1-0 in their last two meetings
Fact: Papiss Cisse currently averages a goal every 68 minutes for Newcastle United, with 11 goals in 10 games.
Fact: Wigan have lost just three League games since February and are chasing their third consecutive home win.

The team has done fantastically well, better than I ever dared hope back in August.

. BUt you know what pis*es me off? No Arsenal fans have even considered the fact it could have been them who were needing Chelsea to lose in the CL final. (if toon finished 3rd)

I guess our players are entitled to an off day now and again. It's just a shame they all had an off day on the same day.
Hopefully they will want to redeem themselves and crush our next opponent.

Yes but the way he's played, he's off to London or Manchester now, I reckon.
Where he will be a flop. Moses is like N'Zog; he's benefitting by being the best player on a bad team.
