Toon Victory Puts Them 10 Points Clear Of 7th

On a weekend where manager Alan Pardew has pledged his future to the club, insisting that he hopes to be there for 3 or 4 years to come, Newcastle have repaid the confidence boost and gone 10 points clear of 7th place in the Premier Leaguer after a 2-0 victory over Liverpool at St James' Park.

Papiss Cisse scored both goals before being replaced by Shola Ameobi in the 72nd minute, whilst tensions frayed towards the end of the game with Jose Enrique being forced to pull on the goalkeepers jersey after Pepe Reina picked up a straight red for going head to head with James Perch.

Mike Williamson picked up man of the match on the day, after he too came close to scoring.

Three disappointing aspects of the game were, Andy Carroll diving in the 1st half, James Perch making a meal out of Reina's "header" and the overall officiating of the game, which was questionable at times.

On the plus side, things rarely go in Newcastle's favour on the pitch but today just so happened to be a good day.

Perch's reaction was bad but I understand it.

Think back to the second leg of last year's CL match between Barcelona & Arsenal. Near the end of the first half, RVP barges through Alves igniting a confrontation. Both Abidal (best wishes for him in his recovery) and Valdes proceed to put their hands around Arsenal players' throats. The scrum is broken up with a booking for RVP.

Second half: RVP is sent off questionably (likely the ref saw the replay of his clash with Alves) and Arsenal lose a contest they were very much in.

If I'm one of those players who had a Barca player's hand around my throat, after the game I might reasonably ask myself if I should have gone down to draw attention to what is clearly a red card offense. I wouldn't be unreasonable to conclude that I should have. If you go down the ref has to make a decision.

You can't even act like you're going to headbutt somebody. It's a clear red card violation: even an overly aggressive gesture or verbal tirade can get you sent off. This is what the law says. On the other hand, Perch's very intentional kick on Reina could be interpreted as a red card offense as well.

In general, it's too bad that the incident happened in an otherwise spirited but clean game.
