Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Sunderland

By Tyne-Talk
March 3 2012

Newcastle United host Sunderland tomorrow in an early 12pm kick off. They go into the game on the back of two wins, one draw and three defeats from their last three games in all competitions, whilst Sunderland travel on the back of four wins and two defeats from their last six.

Papiss Cisse (groin), will be fit to play after being ruled out of the midweek International friendly between Senegal and South Africa.

Cheik Tiote is also fit, but Shola Ameobi is a doubt after struggling with an illness and could join Sylvain Marveaux (groin), Sammy Ameobi (knee), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Leon Best (knee) who are all unavailable.

Sunderland are likely to be without Phil Bardsley (calf) and will definitely be without Keiren Westwood (wrist), however Sebastian Larsson (illness) and Nicklas Bendtner (ankle) are both expected to be fit.

Stephane Sessegnon (jet lag) will be assessed before the game.

Fact: Sunderland have had a player sent off in two of their last three derby games.

Fact: Newcastle have conceded 13 goals in their last 5 League games.

I'll go for 3-1 but that really depends on which team turns up.
Will it be the one that played poorly last week or the one that trounced Manure earlier in the season..

As it's Sunderland we are playing against, the lads should surely be up for it.

C'mon Newcastle (Sm128)

Sure, no doubt. But McClean should have been sent off and Bardsley should be in the book. Also, we WILL see a foul in the box just like that at some point from Sunderland. It'll be interesting to see if it's still a pen then.

The players need to get a grip of the game, the are playing into Sunderland hands and not trying to play football. The service that the front two have had is disgraceful

The referee has been rubbish today, and at this rate there will be some red cards coming out. AP needs to kick off with that performance.

Second half performance was excellent, and people may say that we played agaisnt 10 men, but we were well back in the game before the lad got sent off. In the second half we got the ball down and actually tried to create some chances. The penalty was awful, but then BA has been great all season so won't slag him off, and if you see his interview you could see how p@ssed off he was with himself. Shola keeps it up in the derby match.

taking both halfs into account, we atelast deserved a draw, and thought we did enough to easy win the game. Maybe this point but more important second half performance could be enough to get the club over the finish line and get us to finish above Liverpool which I would have taken anytimeespecially with the money they have spent.

The story is a load of cr@p, it says Sunderland went down to 9 men, they had one player sent off in the second half and then one after the match. We had one of the coaches sent to the stands for the second half as it kicked off in the tunnel.

I am glad AP had his spat with O'Niell as to me he showed how much the game meant to him and the fans, give me that reaction everytime of him and I am happy. I don't believe anything in that story, not saying words were not said when they were walking off the pitch but reckon both teams would have done that. Listened to AP after the game on espn and he never slagged off the referee which he probably could off as Cattermole tackle should have been red and we should have had another penalty when the lad handled it when BA went up for the header

referee was shocking, i cant understand why a tackle which is easily a sending off after 60mins is not a sending off after 20secs!

Referee was pulling us up for silly things and letting the @#$%& push and pull us all over the place!

I personally think that Cattermoles tackle was planned, he was sent onto the pitch withthe instruction to hurt our strongest player (Tiote) at the very first opportunity, this alone should be a red card!

I counted including the penalty given 6 penalties we should have had, 3 were definate and 3 were ones that could have easily been given!

We didn't play well in the first half and this was partly due to the fact that sunderland came out to disrupt us and the referee allowed them to do that to a greater degree than the @#$%& could have hoped for!

It was a shame for Ba missing the penalty but Shola should have been taking it in the first place!

I was talking to a guy after the match and he was telling me the squad have been having 10mins after each training session where Carver, Pedro and Stone have been explaining to the foreign lads what this derby means to us geordies and Pardew gave a very quick teamtalk at half time to allow Carver to remind the players of the geordie pride that was at stake!

Agree about the penalties, mental. I thought the one on HBA was legit, there were the two possible handballs (O'Shea I though it was handball; the one where Jonas cut in from the left I wasn't so sure) and the one definite handball (when 6'2" Ba jumped and the defender's hand still blocked the ball making it to him). Also, Ba's pen should have been retaken and I think whoever it was with the studs-up challenge on Colo should have walked. I've seen it for less. (such as the one that got Kompany suspended).

The referee was bad on the day, and I know the pundits thought he did well, but it was a red card in the first minute as well as some penalties that we should have had. I know people go on about Shola taking the penalty but maybe you need to look at the bigger picture, the first team penalty taker you would imagine would start most games in case you get one, but Shola rarely starts as he isn't in the best 11, so how would that make BA feel that he has to step out of the way if Shola is on

why wont it let you write s_c_u_m?

Had Shola been a lot better than Ba at penalties then Shola would have taken it, obviously they are similar or Ba is better, Ba is the first choice striker so he gets the job!

Ba has already said he changed his mind on the run up and the keeper was well off the line so it was a bad penalty from all areas!
