Danny Guthrie as been named man of the match by Tyne-Talk's player rater Wasim4nufc, for his performance against Queens Park Rangers yesterday lunchtime. There were fairly high scores all round, except for Yohan Cabaye who was taken off within the first 25 minutes through injury. Read on to see how the rest of the team faired...

Player Ratings

Tim Krul (7.5) - Made a couple of decent saves but did not have that much work to do overall.

Danny Simpson (7.5) - Had another good game at right back. Went forward nicely a few times and did his job at the back.

Mike Williamson (7.5) - Won several headers and did everything that was required of him. Really has done well since he returned to the team.

Fabricio Coloccini (8) - A few years ago, I said Jonathan Woodgate was the best centre back at Newcastle for quite a few seasons but Coloccini has surpassed him. Hardly gets beaten, deals with situations calmly and has bags of skill.

Davide Santon (7.5) - Made a couple of defensive mistakes in the first half but apart from that gave another encouraging performance.

Ryan Taylor (7) - Started the game on the right and then moved into the centre when Cabaye went off but was efficient in both positions. Did a job for the team.

Danny Guthrie (8.5) - Really stepped up to the plate in Tiote's absence. We started slowly but once we gained control Guthrie started showing his quality. Never afraid to go into the tackle, intercepted a few balls and was good on the ball. Solid all round display from a man who really should get a new contract soon.

Yohan Cabaye (6.5) - Went off injured just after the half way point in the first half.

Jonas Gutierrez (8) - Was forced to play in a drifting role when Ben Arfa came on and did that with great effect. I thought he was dangerous as he seemed willing to take on players. I'd like to see more of him in such a role.

Leon Best (8) - Worked hard and took his goal brilliantly. I must admit I was questioning his inclusion as I thought Ben Arfa did more to warrant a start. I was happy to eat my words.

Shola Ameobi (6.5) - Did a good job of holding up play but I don't think he had a shot at goal all game if I'm not mistaken which is disappointing for a striker.

Substitutes

Hatem Ben Arfa (8) - Another very encouraging display from the French Magician. Changed the game for us when he came on, as he injected some pace and flair which was lacking in our game at that point. Did a good job of tracking back which was good to see. Hope he gets to start the next game.

James Perch (7.5) - Did a good job as a defensive midfielder when he came on.

Dan Gosling (N/A) - Don't think he had too many touches in the brief period he was on.

i am wondering if we watched the same match,the match I watched was woeful with most of the players being rubbish,jonas being particularly bad.we had one shot on target the whole game and that produced the goal,we could hardly put three passes together. it was that bad I was consiering leaving after about 20 minutes.so I say again were we watching the same match?

This is exactly what's the matter with st james. Why on earth would you leave the ground of our beloved club after 20 minutes ffs. YOU SHOULD BE PROUD TO BE A GEORDIE AND STAY TIL THE FUC KING DEATH NO MATTER WHAT THE SCORE.

thought the scores were a little high, it wasn't a great performance but you'd be spot on if you took a point away from everyone!

I dont see what Perch did that waranted an extra point over Ameobi, yes he didn't have a shot on target during the match whic would normally be poor for a striker but was he there to do that? His role was to support Best, he was there to hassle the defenders, hold up play, make spaces for Best to run into, control the ball to lay it off all of which he did before he ran out of steam!

I thought Jonas did a great job in his new role, i've been wanting them to use him like that since we bought him!

I suppose the emotion of winning and being back in the top 6 got the better of me, hence the high ratings. Do feel that Guthrie was rightfully man of the match though. Just wish they would get him signed up for a new long term contract.

I also thought the scores were a little high. We gave the ball away so many times.

Ben Arfa got on my nerves, taking 2 or 3 extra touches (and often losing the ball) when a straight pass would have served the team better.
He could have taken a leaf out out of Danny Guthries book. No faffing about just getting the job done.
Guthrie was rightly named man of the match. Jonas was excellent too.

I read that as well, Andrew. He's 100% deserving of it. I've rated him for a while (to the point where Tunyc got on me for it at one point). His form this season has been reminiscent of how he played in the spring of 2009, when he led our team in assists and marshaled play consistently.

his 2 most consistant periods for the club have coincided with being injury free and playing in the centre we need to get him signed on as he's shown he is a ready made replacement for Tiote and he's already at the club!

Hey all-let's take it easy on the new guy, differences in opinion aside. I gotta hope he was being hyperbolic.

Guthrie has done well and he's a player I like. He's given a huge return on his fee. I don't agree with the assertion that he's not much of a step down from Tiote. IMO, wor Cheick is one of the very best in the world at what he does. Can't think of anyone I'd rate as definitely better other than Yaya Toure. And based on that pop he had at Arsenal last season (with his LEFT foot), I think he may be every bit as good as Toure.

I would also offer Raylor a new deal. Neither would be on daft money but have proved very useful this season. I, like many, have been critical of Raylor in the past and I dont think he will be a first team regular. But credit where credit is due and they deserve a new deal.

You dont seem to get any problems from Guthrie or Raylor which is also another positive. Both have spoken recently about being settled in the area with a young family.

Raylor was on my list at the start of the season as one to get rid of but again he's another player who is benefiting from being injury free and i wouldn't be diassapointed if the club offered him a new contract as he's shown he can play in atleast 4 poasitions so far this season!

Guthrie couldn't be classed in the same bracket as tiote at what tiote does as you say Tunyc there's not many that can and only 1 or 2 in the premier league that you could! Guthrie is however a capable replacement and after the way he covered for Tiote's injury abscence earlier in the season i'm not as concerned about his abscence for the ACoN!

Yeah, I agree that Guthrie's definitely a keeper. Raylor's shown he's versatile and doesn't complain over whatever his role in the team is so I don't have a problem with resigning him but I don't consider it a priority.
