A St James By Any Other Name!

By Dave Eadevic
November 10 2011

"Any future naming deal would still include the phrase "@StJames'Park". In our reign, absolutely, it's just adding to the name. If this brings in a good chunk of money to the club, which goes straight to the team, so it's revenue we should look at." - Llambias 2009.

"I totally respect the tradition and history of the club. That is always going to be there, but we need to move with the times and this is progression.

We are not disrespecting our fans at all, far from it. We are trying to make it affordable and put players on the pitch. We have exhausted all our other revenue streams.

We have been out there a long time looking. We lose Northern Rock as a sponsor this year so it gives me a very small window to get a new shirts sponsor and hopefully a stadium sponsor at the same time.”

Llambias November 2009

“We will from now on rename the team Sports Direct soccer stars, and we will play in red and white.”

Llambias November 2013?

So what’s in a name?

Quite a bloody lot, when that name has 119 years of tradition behind it. When it is the spiritual home of Newcastle United.

And why change the name at all?

To bring in more revenue? But how will it?

Is FCW planning on paying the club for the use of the name? As far as I can tell he is not, if it’s simply about money and we really need it, then why not wait until a real investor has put the money in and change it?

Why destroy all the good will that has been so recently won?

It has to be contempt, nothing else makes sense. I am going to take the approach that this is not happening, it is and will always remain St James’ park to me, I will not even dignify this new name with the written word.

If a real sponsor arrives and we see real money, being spent on the team then I may just relent, but I only hope it’s the ‘St James investment group’.

I know Ashley now seems to have many defenders, so could one of those please explain the financial gain to me. Sports Direct, just to clarify have not pledged one single penny for this name change.

So unless it’s funding another of these allegedly expensive free transfers, I fail to see what we can expect to get out of it.

This is simply a case of yet more lies, and contempt.

Just when I think I may have been wrong, just when the side starts playing well, just when the coach (I still don’t class him as a manager) is doing a brilliant job, we have this dropped upon us from a great height. I hope there are no protests, I really do, they don’t work and merely make us look stupid.

The best way is to ignore it is happening. Never dignify it with any name other than St James and hope for the day they finally leave.

I'd like to put forward the motion that if anyone refers to St. James' Park as Sports Direct Arena on here then they are immediately handed a lifetime ban.

Right first off in no way do I defend this decision it is daft, and I will always refer it to st james park.

However a few points as the article asks, are there any reasons to do it? well yes there are, its the way it is being done that has annoyed me.

Reasons and please feel free to shoot me down as I dont like the idea either:

Look at man city I read today they have a deal with etihad who make them 100m over 10 years for their deal. Now ten million per season isn't tonnes in football terms (for transfers in anycase) but it is a steady revenue and would help the club keep a + balance sheet, especially when it comes to uefas new financial rules.

Maybe we are struggling to attract a big name sponsor for the shirts to give us any sort of decent revenue? And maybe this is being chuck out there as an added incentive for any mega rich sponsors taken not only the shirt deal but also the stadium too. This maybe the first steps trying to get a larger company involved with the club in terms of investment and/or sponsorship. Maybe with his name it is allowig other companys think that they may have a chanc eor make an offer of serious investmant in the club.

Thirdly yes I realise the current choice is to be Ashley Direct Sports (I dont want a lifetime ban please lol). But over the last few seasons Ashley has pumped money into the club especially when we dropped down to the championship, maybe this is a way to clear any debt owed to him by the club. Thus making the club a much healthier proposition to any potential buyers in the future. Meaning any future buyers wouldn't be lumbered with the debt Ashley was when he took over.

Like I said at the begining St James Park is always St James Park.

1st Man City's stadium is new and as such has no history, if Ashley had built us a new ground 9that in my opinion I neither want nor need) he could of called it what he wants.

2nd As I have stated before the main responsibility for our relegation lies with Ashley and his ridiculous managment policy, his mistake, that he paid for, don't expect gratitude.

3rd ok if they are going to rename it, as I said in the article wait until some @#$%& is paying for the privelage.

I second i!'s motion.

If DL tells me my name is Bradley, I check my ID to be sure.

Our situation is so completely not comparable to City's. Amount City was immediately pledged when they sold the rights to Etihad: 400M. Amount we've received for two years of huge amounts of SD signage at SJP: about 40K.

Andy-the word "maybe" appears four times in your 5th paragraph. It's clutching at straws, dude.

MA's lack of due diligence led to the need for immediate cash infusion when he bought the club. His unwillingness to fund improvement of a clearly undermanned squad in January of 2009 (rather, we sold Given) led directly to our relegation. As I've said before-you don't deserve a pat on the back for cleaning up your own mess.

Like I said Tunyc I dont agree with it, just some weighing up possibilities from the other side thats why theres so many maybe's. Im a libra in the true sense: most of the time.

Also dave ignore the thick mackems as it would be:

Sports
Direct
Arena.

And the key thing in all of this it will always be NUFC. Thats who we support and in our minds it will always be st james park. If this name change is needed to keep us in touch with the big guns and take us back into europe fair enough, it simply puts more enthisus on the owners to spend to make sure we do stop there without taking out huge debts against the club like past regimes.

I dont want it to change but Im not going to start jumping on the Ashley bashing bandwagon. Not that a lot on here do, I mean more the bloggers on the papers and such. Those such bloggers have been made to look like the f00king kn0b5 they are after the summer of grief. Then after the start we have made and the impact the so called cheap imports have had they have been very quiet.

Now they have had had their guns reloaded and are firing the bullets again. Some would say its stupid timing by Ashley with a lot of fans starting to come round. Maybe its good timing with the team doing well and flying high. Plus as has been reported Northern Rock have not took up the option to continue sponsoring us so offering the naming rights might bring a much bigger deal. The Rock leaving is probably a good thing as I remember it being quite a small amount per year (possibly 2m) as we had been relegated when we signed. Hopefully the way we have started could bring a massive deal so strike whilst the iron is hot.

Like I said in the summer Im giving him his five or so years to turn things around and he is doing well so far. People are saying he is ripping the heart out of football in general. people who blame Mike Ashley for turning football into a business need to give themselves a shake. It was changed a long time before he showed up and he is learning fast to try and keep up.

Some people say that it would have been ok if we had have moved into a new stadium. True, but what would you rather have. A new stadium out of the city or to keep the same St James' park but just have a different name in the programs.

WI'd call that a slightly biased description of the positions, Biffins. Many of those critical of Ashley in the summer like myself have been willing to admit that we were wrong about several things. That's why one of the narratives emerging from this is: Ashley has thrown away the good will from the team's start.

This doesn't make me feel the need to bash him any more than I already do. It does confirm my assertions that he's a less-than-completely-above-board businessman, to me. This is a ploy to market a completely separate, shareholder-owned public company via NUFC. Whether one can countenance that is half of the debate. I could swallow it under certain circumstances. I see that selling stadium rights is a growing trend. We're getting nothing for it, however, and that's ridiculous. Mike Ashley is not on the board of directors of NUFC Ltd, which owns Newcastle United Football Club and Saint James' Park. Derek Llambias is-and is therefore beholden to get the best deal possible for the club, or at least NUFC Ltd from any sponsorship deal. What the directors of NUFC Ltd are actually doing is selling the sponsorship to Sports Direct, a completely separate shareholder-owned public company literally for a pittance, because the majority shareholder of that other company is Mike Ashley.

The renaming is a crass and insensitive gesture aimed at promoting the Sports Direct brand in a way that's shady and dishonest in any case. It's a shitty way to do business.

just for clarification the actual amount man city sold the naming rights for was 100m over 10 years not 400m!

You can see why he's doing it and it may be the right thing the do but the problem is the same as it always has been with MA and DL and that is the way they have gone about it!

Barry Hearn was interviewed about it and asked about renaming Leyton orients ground the matchroom stadium after his business and his response was i'm putting the money into the club why shouldn't i use it to advertise my other business!

I don't think anybody will call it by that name, with the exception of some p@ss taking d@cks who's view I don't care about. For me and anybody local will always call it St James Park.

If the name does get changed for a sponsor then personally I am up for it, as if true we can get 8-10 million, then that means we can get a player of around 4-6 million and then use the rest on a player which hasn't cost the club anything. For me an extra player is needed more.

The game has changed over the years, and can understand why some people are p@ssed off but then if we ever had a new stadium then it would be called after a sponsor so I don't see a problem in a old stadium getting called something else, the books need to be balanced and the premiership is a global brand, so it is not that it is unexpected. If Man U or Chelsea got a great offer on the name then they would take it

People also have to remember that the club has a lot of debt and only recently turned the club into balancing the books, which for a premiership club is amazing, it is probably the only business in the world that can run at a loss and people are generally happy.

With the extra income if we get it then it can go on bringing new players in and pay the wages that people like Colo want as we are currently trying to tie him down for a new contract.

Also the club has lost money with the gates falling and there could be numerous reasons, like the lack of signing a forward or the state the country is in, and people haven't got the cash to go, either way the club has lost a lot of cash and we need to get it back regardless.

Also if the money brings in the players that has been talked about on here in the past, then wouldn't you rather have that than the new name that we won't use anyway, and if the club brings in an extra couple of players, books making profits then it would make investment into the club more appealing to a possible takeover if and when it goes down that road.

We obviously can't get rid of any of the current players to generate more cash to go towards the team, as the likes of Perch and co are going to bring nothing in, and other than saving Smithy wage which isn't a lot on the grand scheme of things, but we need to strengthen the team regardless

Personally would have liked to keep the name but unless we get taken over by some rich Shiekh then it needs to go down this way, as I would rather see the likes of the club keeping players like Cabeye, Tiote and Ben Arfa, and playing good football in the top flight than seeing those players going and going down to the championship.

The club can't keep getting gems on not big transfer fee's so as I said we need to get more cash in, however it is done

We will get no substantial revenue from Sports Direct. If they want to sell the rights, sell them. What other club that sold the rights to a large and visible stadium had to "showcase" it like this? NUFC supporters are being played for rubes. Advertising for SD is the point. I could get over it if Adidas or Tesco or Airbus or some other reputable business came in with 80M for 10 years, fine, but this is transparent BS.

Yes we will though tunyc any debt owed to Ashley by NUFC will be being removed, it also gives potential sponsors an easier approach this way all the bad feeling of name change falls on Ashleys head not possibly any new sponsor like Addidas or Puma who maybe wouldnt go for the option incase it back fired by the fans.

Sports Direct is becoming a major company over here, they made huge profits last year, which Ashley shared with staff, they got a bonus of 45K which for any shop assistant is @#$%& outstanding. I am sure they are the UK's no 1 sports retailer.

As Andrew says Ashley is taking the brunt of the fans outrage to make it more appealing to future sponsors! He has also timed it with Northern Rock having to decide if they are going to take up the last few months of their contract, I would imagine he was quite pleased when they didn't take up the fianl months as now he can put a sports direct logo on the strip and show the new sponsor exactly what they will be getting!

Can't help but laugh at how sad some people are ! Even if this isn't just free advertising for fat ash's knock off shop And they really do intend to bring in 8-10m per year for naming rights then that money will go nowhere near the managers cheque book it will go straight back in old del boys back pocket . Let's face it he spent all the 35m plus any transfer budget for this season on the worlds most exspensive free transfers ! .
I'm not moaning though as this is the kind of contempt I've grown used to from this regime and it seems the footballing gods are taking pity on us as the free transfers and the rash decision to appoint pardew have all so far turned out to be pure gold
But for now I'll just drift on in my own delusion that one day we will be taken over by someone who puts the club first and not the global advancement of there tatty shop. ( who knows maybe ant + dec could gather a consortium of there rich buddies ! Told you I was delusional(Sm105))

According to the accounts Andrew, the only portion of the loans we no longer owe were taken out of the club's revenue. (This represents another lie from Ashley, that he's not taking money out of the club. But then, most fans don't bother to check on the validity of such claims.) According to the same acounts, we've gotten 46K from SD over the last two seasons for all the adverts plastered all over SJP.

I'm not surprised by the level of rationalizing I'm seeing here, considering Llambias' foul-mouthed tirade full of swipes at NUFC legends doesn't even get mentioned.

So now we are back to having a go at the bloke for putting over 300 mill into our club. How dare he pay himself back money he wasn't expecting to have to put in.

If the same people who actually want him out of the club thought about it then its in their best interests if he does pay himself back the money owed. It may take a few years but if there is no debt then surely there is more of a chance of somebody buying Newcastle.

There is a massive difference in the old sh17e that Ashley is lining his own pocket and him paying himself back bit by bit.

On the Llambias thing I think the man is a disgrace and probably more hated than Ashley. It would be great if he was sacked and a more charismatic figure who knew what he was doing was put in place. It probably wont happen but thats what I would want. On the other hand though I remember a certain Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall doing far worse a few years back. But its ok though, they just spent loads of cash and us mugs forgot all about it.

Tunyc, the "not our saviour" link doesnt have this or last seasons figures on which would obviously make a massive difference. Two seasons premiership money and the culling of more dead wood will make for better figures.

Cant help but feel this is why we get called fickle fans. We are 3rd in the league without having to spend any money. Have probably the best team since SBR (even though i think we have less egos now), some would say better. If we get 2/3 signings in January and maybe a couple in the summer then who knows where we could go. Its the only way really as trying to out spend the top boys with mercenary players is doomed to failure.

Be careful what you wish for as there are plenty more Carson Yeungs out there. Then again, they might go and spend loads of money they dont have on Michael Owen, Boumsong, Luque..etc etc then we will be right back up there with the big boys.

I'm not complaining about fat ash paying himself back that is a given he is in his rights to do so What is wrong though is the amount he is charging himself to advertise his tat at st James park ! He should pay the going rate of advertisement on a global stage that the premier league provides like any other company has to and it would clear the debt owed to himself much quicker . What is happening now is like the worst kind of loan shark and should be illegal as it is ripping off the club and the fans.
Further more in a few years time after the debts are all cleared and the club is turning a healthy profit do you really believe that he is suddenly going to start spending that profit on the squad after years of doing it all on free transfers ? I somehow don't see it he will continue to do it all on free transfers and banking the money for himself ! Face it he sees it as a business and if it can make enough money to clear that amount of debt in a few years then it will make him a nice sum of money after that and then why would he sell a business that is a) putting more money into his bank and b) provides virtually free global advertisement for his knock off sports goods
I believe we're stuck with the fat cockney for the long haul now so let's just prey fortune continues to smile on us with gems such as tiote and cabaye and enjoy them while they are here as they are eventually going to be sold for a tidy profit
So let's just enjoy the ride it will always be a bumpy one here in the north east but that's why I love the toon and that's something that fat ash can never put a tacky logo on

The club could be a lot worse with other owner, as plenty around have proved it, coming in and saying big money was going to get thrown at it, Birmingham and Blackburn are prime examples, or you have Everton, quite a succesful club within their means but in a real bad mess and unless they get investment then you could see going under or more big name players leaving just to balance the books, we may have lost players but they left on our terms and financially was good for the business, and that is what football has become, in the past it was for the love of the sport and their are people still out there Dave Whelan being one, but I would rather be us than Wigan.

Ashley does need to understand that his PR is cr@p and fully agree with Biffins over Llambias, the guy is useless and the club should appoint somebody who can connect with the fans as Ashley has proved he can't, but it is a business to him and he needs to know that customers need to be happy, even if this is a business unlike any other in the world.

I was one who has stated on here many a times that Ashley needs to go, but sometimes it is the better the devil you know and have always said that he will never make the club go under, and with the changing times now in football it is more important in getting the books right while staying in the premiership which at the moment we are easily doing so he has got something right.

Regarding him going out splashing the cash once money has been paid back, really would you want to go back to the days of Owen and the amount of cr@p that we had that were only here for cash where we have a team spirit who are wanting to prove something, personally I would rather go down the summer bargains and free transfers as long as they are good enough. Suppose unless we got taking over by a mega rich Russian or Sheikh

So short term success makes it alright to p*ss all over the clubs heritage to market his other business ! over the years many teams have started as well as ourselves then nosedived into relegation trouble after Xmas . I can't see this with the toon as we have a fairly strong squad if injurys are kind to us but untill we hit the 40pt mark I'm not getting too carried away.
And excuse me for being slightly alarmed at what is happening to the club . Like I stated before he should pay the going rate for that advertisement to help clear the debt owed to himself that much sooner instead of calling it a showcase for prospective sponsors calling it this is his way of saying he ain't paying for it
If he payed a fair price or another company was paying a good amount for the stadium name it would still hurt but it would be understandable to help clear any debt
And to answer TTD no I wouldn't want to go back to the days of Owen and splashing cash on wasters such as him but it would be nice to be able to compete in the transfer windows rather that waiting all summer/January to have that tool llambias tell us that we couldn't sign players as we're not in the same league as the likes of fulham/stoke/any prem team ! The players we've got so far have been outstanding but eventually we will need to spend as not all are going to have low release fee's like cabaye had
Then how long will it be before a club decides that Carr is a very talented scout and offers more than ash is willing to pay !
I don't want Ashley out I have come to terms with the fact he will be here a very long time and sometimes it's better the devil you know I just want him to stop ripping off the club with virtually free advertisement pay the going rate to clear debts that he himself had a hand in creating he failed to check the clubs books properly before purchasing then it was his poor decisions that led to relegation causing him to have to pump more money in to keep the club afloat !

If Sports Direct pay NUFC for the advertising it gets taxed, then when NUFC pay Ashley repayments on the loans it gets taxed so why not pay nothing for the advertising and use the money to pay off the debt without paying tax! Biffin's-the point is: how many times does someone have to lie to you (Mike isn't taking any money out of this club...AC is not for sale...it'll always be SJP, as long as we're here) before you don't believe him about anything anymore?

Great if he were sacked? Honestly, what an awesome position-to be able to act like that, have it recorded and not have to assume you'll be shitcanned.

I also have no problem with him getting his loan back. That's how loans work. BUT: 1. his people have lied about this-the obviousness of the lie at the time is what made it so odious AND 2. it's less than ethical of him collect loan payments from NUFC Ltd. when he's engineered a backroom deal with NUFC Ltd.'s directors (MA is not one) to allow virtually free adverts at SJP for a completely separate, shareholder-owned business in which he holds a stake.

Another opinion from the sponsorship/advertising industry

Whatever DL says about the potential of naming rights, the professionals in the field disagree. Tell me, do you think such a shrewd businessman would make such a mistake? It's almost like they want to fail in their mission of finding another sponsor...on purpose!

I bet it'll be SD Arena as long as NUFC is owned by AshleyCo.

TTID-"players left on our terms" Really? Like Given leaving for a pittance and then we're relegated by a single point? Not my terms.

Mental-you can't be serious with that argument. On the other hand, simply consider: Mike Ashley, NUFC Ltd. and Sports Direct International are three separate entities.

Finally, for everyone bringing up our league position: so if in 6 weeks we've fallen to 14th, does that make all the arguments you're resisting correct? It's a red herring and completely irrelevant here.

Dave, in the premier league today how many clubs have owners who love the club, the only 2 you can say truly love the club are Kenwright and Whelan, the other clubs are owned as businesses!

Tom how do we know that MA isn't taking the money that he would be paying for the advertising and keeping it in one of his other businesses and taking it off the loan?

What money?

He is paying the club preciesly nothing for this farce, he's not even pretending too.

I seriously doubt anyone will pay for the privalegge of being hated by about 90 percent of the geordie public.

So it will stay with that name until we are hopefully sold, the sooner the better.

So please regail me with the finacial knowledge that I am so clearly lacking.

First of all I dont particularly like Ash but we have him at the moment and Im more than happy to mention the good things that he has brought to the club. This is so easily forgotten or failed to be mentioned.

You mention about the constant lies from the owners. I dont think he has taken money out of the club. Like I said, paying yourself back bit by bit is totally different from him fleecing the club lining his own pockets which most negative bloggers (not on here) say. You may call it spin. If/when we get debt free, he starts taking out the possible 40-50 mill profit available and pockets it then I will not be happy.
I may sound like a stuck record but our last owners took a lot more money out of the club, both throughout their reign and when the club was sold, than Ash has. At least he spent his own money.

The Carroll thing has been covered so many times. Yes they said he isnt for sale but how many times do clubs say that. Its part of the game/gamble in trying to get the most money or not getting your pants taken down. If liverpool paid 60 mill would you still slate them for it. They knocked back 3-4 bids, Carroll and his tw.at of an agent tried to get a bumper pay rise so they sold him on at a stupid amount of money. Its been a great move for him hasnt it.

You have a great point though. They do say things at times which really comes back to bite them and Llambias is a complete tool. I wish they would just shut up at times.

The position we are in before or after the next three games, at xmas or end of the season has nothing to do with it. We are doing great but Im sure everyone knows it will not last. My excitement about it is that we have great team work and ethic without having to spend a penny. If a bit is spent in January then we could really push on. Not from the 3rd position we are in now but from where we finished last season.

Look I have covered the Carroll thing so many times even I am losing interest.

Liverpool obviously overpaid by miles, but my opnion was and remains it wouldn't matter if they paid 350 million the point was it would never be spent, and lets face matters that has been proved right.

The renamimg we are not getting paid a single penny, so I will ask one final time what is in it for us?

I am honestly not being cowardly, but this is my last word on it, I think he is @#$%&, and he is ripping us off at every opportunity, as much as I want to debate there is no point we are obviously opposed.

So I look forward to your debates on another subject, this one seems pointell now.

I admire your opinion, and your argument, I simply think your wrong.

But I will fight for your right to be wrong every time.

Keeping the money in another business and taking it off the loan (Sm22)
At what point in their history have they ever given you any reason to believe in them so much ? I really wish I could have your blind faith in a regime that has continued to say one thing and do the complete opposite

The "spin" as you put it and lies are exactly what bother me, Biffins. I understand that football clubs are not run by nuns these days but the crassness of the asshats here really gets me. It's like answering a hypothetical question: "what could you do that would @#$%& off NUFC supporters?"

Rename Saint James' Park and do it as a favor to the guy who engineered your crony job and don't get anything for the club.

And our owners do this.
