Newcastle United travel to Ewood Park tomorrow evening for their 4th round Carling Cup game against Blackburn Rovers and for the first time in a long time manager Alan Pardew will be forced to name a changed side from the one which is yet to be defeated in the Premier League this season.

Both Cheik Tiote (knee) and Steven Taylor (broken nose) picked up injuries against Wigan at the weekend, whilst Shola Ameobi picked up a hamstring injury and will be out for up to six weeks.

Blackburn manager Steve Kean may be without Michel Salgado (hamstring), whilst both David Dunn and Ryan Nelson are also sidelined.

Pardew has made it clear he takes the competition seriously but is refusing to name his side in advance. He told Sky Sports;

“You can only strive for them if you've got success in the Premier League, because the stability of the football club depends on the stability in the Premier League.

Fortunately for us we have 19 points so that's an outstanding effort by the team and it gives us a good situation. My team selection will be very much what I think is needed for that game."

He added;

“It's a cup tie and at the level we're playing at, there's going to be nothing between us so it's about desire and, on the night, making sure you do your job to the best of your ability - and hopefully win the game.

They have an advantage. They're the home side; penalties, extra time would be on their pitch, so it's a tough game for us."

Fact: The two teams have only met in the League Cup once that was in the 1998/99 season when Blackburn won on penalties in the 4^th round.

Fact: Newcastle have won their last four away games in the League Cup.

AP really needs to break out the hairdryer. We're getting battered by the worst team in the league. Outshot 9-2 with none of ours on target. Unacceptable, and I hope he's pointing out to certain players that this may be their last chance to prove themselves for a while.

My parting shot: 65th minute in a game where we're eliminated if we lose and we're getting dominated (not a shot on target yet) by the worst team in the league and AP feels no need to make a change. So which is it? Does he like what he's seeing right now or do we have nothing on the bench? It has to be one or the other.

Sad performance in a lot of ways. Given the very difficult run of games ahead, it would have been nice to look forward to a meaningful cup game. Instead, that goes to Blackburn...and I just vomited in my mouth.

Bast.ard. Proper cup tie.

Would have preferred not to have had extra time but least we had some fight at the end and not went out with a wimper.

If we had to lose the unbeaten tag then probably best its in the cup (especially as you know we would have been drawn against Man City).

At least we have until Monday to recover as its going to be a tough match.

Shame we are out of the cup, as it would have been nice to try and get silverware, but I suppose with the teams still in it, it was always going to be hard. So I am looking at the positives that it is less games we have to play, the next league game is the important one for us

Meh, I'm not into rationalizing and I don't think three fewer games is going to make any difference. It sucks that we're out of the cup as it was our best shot at a trophy this season. But what are you gonna do? I just hope this isn't the start of bad form from our defense and that S. Taylor is ready to go against Stoke. Frankly, I don't see us getting anything against the Manchesters or Chelsea. So we need to get some points from the next two.
