Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Rob Elliot has, this evening, signed a 5 year deal to join Newcastle United as the 3rd choice keeper at the club, overtaking Ole Soderberg in the runnings. Tim Krul is currently 1st choice between the sticks as Steve Harper recovers from injury and seems intent on staying top keeper after having a fantastic start to the season, but a battle could be on between Harper and Elliot as to who eventually deputises Krul when he becomes the No.1 keeper.

25 Year old Elliot said of his move;

"I am looking forward to the challenge of joining a club like Newcastle  United. This is a huge club and a huge opportunity for me to learn from two of the  best keepers in the division."

Whilst Alan Pardew also spoke of signing a player he previously worked with at Charlton;

 "The goalkeeping position is one we felt we needed to  strengthen.

Rob is an excellent keeper who I have worked with before, and I know he will  be a good signing for the club."

Newcastle United's Fraser Forster joined Celtic on a season long loan earlier this month, a move which is expected to become a permanent deal, despite having a £1.5m bid rejected for the 23 year old before agreeing the loan deal.

Rob Elliot has become Newcastle's 2nd signing of the night and 7th of the transfer window.
