I didn’t intend to start this with a spirited defence of Barton but circumstances dictate that I will probably have to. Why is Joey so hated by the press? He is hardly the first player ever to go to prison; a sentence I notice he has never made any excuse for, merely offered his regrets. When released the press almost carried out a witch hunt to get Newcastle to fire him.

This remember is the very same press that a few years ago was demanding Tony Adams was made England captain upon his release from prison. 

He is also hardly the first to have a problem with his employers, I remember Neville Southall going on strike at Everton one half time for instance, again an action that was applauded by many members of the press.

I think Barton’s real problem with the press or certain sections of it anyway is down to the simple fact that he is more intelligent than the vast majority of footballers, realises they need him more than he needs them, and simply does not care about their opinion of him. All of which I personally I admire.

It still doesn’t quite explain the hostility towards him, yesterday an article about him was entitled ‘sympathy for the devil’ which seemed harsh, and this was from one of the very few pieces that defended him.

Nolan and Barton combined reawakened my belief in football players, after week in week out watching multi millionaires wandering around as if this football thing was intruding on an otherwise quite pleasant life.

It was refreshing to see two players that cared, that it hurt to lose, and that you could almost believe were not just pulling on the shirt merely for money.

Now one is gone and short of a miracle the other will follow, who does that leave us with?

Danny Simpson, gets on with his job and always gives 100%, Shola obviously loves the club but is too laid back for his own good. Where are the leaders? Someone to grab the game, and occasionally errant forwards by the scruff of the neck?

So I will leave it at that, hopefully it will go quiet at Newcastle for a while and someone from a safe distance will tell Joey that haircut is a sending off offence in itself.

Da Canio pushed the referee, Drunken Duncan got sent down when at Rangers, Cantona kung fu kicked the fan. People forgot about these things, where barton has kept it, the probably big thing for him is that he hasn't been at a club that wins things as the media tend to leave the top 4 clubs and players alone.

Barton has been a kn@b quite a few times, but at the same time he needs to remember to keep things simple on twitter if he wants to be left alone, if not we all know the media have naff all to write about so he makes it simple for them.

I think the big wake up call for him was when we went down to the fizzy pop league and at times didn't get picked, he bounced back and was probably our best player last season

I think the fact he's a Newcastle United player has a part in it. The media still love to give us a kicking any time we put a foot wrong. For example, we 'worship' Kevin Keegan and get mocked and called deluded for it, Liverpool fans call for Dalglish to be appointed manager after about 10 years out of the game before he spunks £100m on average players and not a word is said.

Good call, i!. That's certainly part of it.

I also agree that his "I don't give a f00k what you think of me attitude" has something to do with it and I too admire that attitude.

That haircut was a f00king joke, though. WTF? Just do the honorable thing and cut it off!

Fully agree of the defence of joey Barton, the way the media are handling this is disgusting.

ESPN, Sky Sports News, Yahoo News, And inparticular TALK SPORT you bunch of @#$%& I am no longer going to listen to those biased gits anymore I'd rather listen to classic Fm than listen to those again Ronnie Irani and Alan Brazil this morning what a bunch of dicks.

The ref dealt with the matter on the day. Arsenal ahould of had two players sent off. One a deliberate stamp - Red Card no questions. Two - a hit to the face however pathetic - Red Card if one of our players had even brushed one of their players they would have rolled all over the shop.

Arsenal a bunch of cheating f'ing divers and cheats. Nice to see them get some of their own medicine.

Aye I agree with what Joey said about shearer too, alan needs to get down off his bbc high horse imo.

Why is it whenever anyone leaves they always drag the whole club throigh it, none of them remember where they made all that cash at. I heard a few stories of mr shearer being a dick to tradesmen working on his house etc.

Shearer showed himself to be a very bitter man on MOTD on saturday, even the guy in my local who worships shearer and has been known to fight anyone who dares to slag shearer off turned round and said the comments he made on MOTD made him sound like a knob!

On another point about the media, talksport were discussing the foul of Sagna where he was tackled and he stumbled forward a few paces, the free kick was taken from where Sagna eventually landed not where the foul was commited, one of the pundits said this is what should happen and the other correctly said it should have been taken from where the foul was commited, it amazes me that football pundits have no idea about the rules of the game and how the games officials could of let it happen, what would of happened if Sagna had of stumbled a couple of more metres and ended up in the penalty area?
