Newcastle United's Hatem Ben Arfa has travelled back to France for further treatment after suffering from an ankle injury during the opening game of the clubs US tour. He left the match, after a tackle from Sporting Kansas Roger Espinoza, in a protective cast.
Ben Arfa is joined on his trip to France by club physio Derek Wright and will continue to be assessed over the weekend. The outcome of this assessment will determine whether or not the Midfielders initial 3 week recovery timeframe was too optimistic and whether or not he will miss the beginning of the season.
The 24 year old is the 3rd injury of pre-season for Alan Pardews side. He joins Shane Ferguson and Danny Guthrie, both of whom limped off in the opening pre-season game against Darlington.
This is strange and not in a good way. I haven't seen any word at all from the club or a physician on his recovery timetable. HBA himself is the one who said 3 weeks. There's a big difference between the skill sets of a footballer and a doctor.
I'm a cynic, but I'd bet on an announcement next week that he'll be out 6-8 weeks. It really was a terrible tackle. Who the f00k gets a yellow in a friendly?!
Tiote got a yellow in a friendly for a far nastier challenge than the one that took Ben Arfa off. Honestly, in person the tackle looked weak and I felt that Ben Arfa was scared by it more than hurt by it. He's probably got some personal demons that need to be taken care of more than physical ailments.

Again, thanks for the shout. Tackles can be hard to read visually. I didn't realize how bad De Jong's was until I saw it from a few angles and in slo-mo. I hope it's more of a psychological thing for him (know how that goes with injuries). Then again, I don't think you get your leg put in plaster for paranoia...
