Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Liverpool v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
April 30 2011

Newcastle United travel to Liverpool on the back of a 1-1 draw against Blackpool and have drawn two, won one and lost three of their last six games, whilst Liverpool host on the back of a 5-0 win against Birmingham City and have three wins, two draws and one defeat from their last six.

Kenny Dalglish is unbeaten at home since taking over as manager of Liverpool and would have been hoping that former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll would have been available for selection against his old club. However, Carroll is a major doubt after struggling with an injury which saw him miss last weekend’s game.

Liverpool will also be without Glenn Johnson (hamstring), Steven Gerrard (groin), Daniel Agger (knee), and Fabio Aurelio (hamstring).

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has Steve Harper available for selection but may opt to keep Tim Krul in goal, however, injury prone Stephen Ireland is ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Danny Guthrie (foot), Leon Best, (ankle), Alan Smith (ankle), Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg) and Dan Gosling (knee) are all unavailable whilst Kevin Nolan hopes to start despite a minor groin strain.

Fact: A Liverpool win would be their 50th in 75 games against Newcastle at Anfield.

Fact: If Newcastle win they will be the only side to record wins on the road at both Merseyside clubs this season.

I think a draw would be a good result for us.
A win would be great but I can't see that happening.

The match is on ESPN today so I'm looking forward to watching it.

Andy Carroll is on the bench.

They are dreadful, we are worse. Every time the camera goes to Judas he has his head in his hands.

If we manage to string together half a dozen passes we could score here.

We're probably the better side, but it counts for nothing as we haven't threatened them at all.

Pooor match played by two poor sides.

we deserve something though.

Well we desperately need a decent striker - 6 corners so far.

Suarez and Coloccini just swapped shirts. I haven't seen that done a half time before.

i've seen it done before, its generally a foreign player thing and will no doubt be a massive talking point for pundits over the next week!

There was a strong case for offside for their goal and it took a wicked deflection, we are again doing well without a final product, looks like its going to be another match that'd be a totally different outcome had we had a striker in form

Yeah if only we could produce a striker that was good in the air, bring him through the youth system give him the no 9.

shame we cant.

Barton nearly scored mid way through this rant.

Flanaghan has commited several fouls where if he hadn't already been booked would of received a yellow card for, ref is obviously protecting him now and i can see him being replaced
by the 60min mark!

He's struggling against Jonas and has been committing countless bookable offences and is at the minute liverpool's biggest weakness, i hope this has been identified and everyone is being told to give jonas and enrique the ball and for them to run at him!

You think that was a penalty, dave? Suarez didn't go down because of that contact, no f00king way. Disgraceful dive from a serial cheater.

Still, we've never looked like scoring and the result will be fitting.

Slightly different take: I don't think there was any contact that would make anybody go down and therefore it was a dive and rightly a yellow for Suarez. But it was terrible defending from Williamson and if Suarez stays up he probably scores anyway. The result is the same.

aye we were@#$%&today didn't really create too much gong forward, we had tons of corners with no end product. gutierez was decent and was skinning their RB but again no real end product from it all.

I agree with tunyc no way was it a pen but williamson should of done much better with the defending in the first place, he give up on running it out too early.

Utter rubbish today. Sadly some of the midfield play was ok, but again completely wasted by the forwards. Just think where we would be if flippin Ameobi and Lovenkrands had been our options all season - bottom 3!

ruled the game in midfield but no strikers and simpson/williamsons defending isnt up to standard need replacing

If we had raylor on he could at least cross in a good ball cant see him defend worse then simpson.

Was shocking defence for all 3 goals the 2nd he should clear it versus some1 like suarez but suarez goes down easy (outside the box) which is no suprise.

Need to just get another 2 points from last 3 games and build on.

Daragh-agree about Williamson and Simpson looking terrible, and I think Enrique was fragile in defense today. Colo was better but was in a poor position for their first. Not a good day at the office for our defenders. Liverpool didn't create much.

is it just me or do 9/10 of our goals conceded come from half hearted blocks?

Williamson and simpson are notorious for it really need to communicate better maybe a shout from krul is needed. Simpson flicking an arm at what would have been an easy save for krul is just self destruction

Just got home now after a busy day. Can't say I'm surprised with the result. I saw a few minutes of the first half and we looked okay but had no cutting edge. We need better strikers than Ameobi and Lovenkrands. Barton also gets into some good positions but apart from his goals against Liverpool at home and Aston Villa at home his finishing during open play has been poor. We definitely need a striker who can hold up the ball well and be a threat in the air.

Unfortunately I won't be able to do the ratings for this week but I'll hopefully get to see our next game, a game we really need to win if we have ambitions of finishing in the top ten.

That's a nice turn of phrase, TTID. I'm going to borrow that one.

The surprising part is how we dominated possession in the first half and had a couple hands full of corners and FKs in good positions. What once again is not suprising is that we couldn't score-again, for the 6th time in 12 games since AC left. In the same span we've scored 13 total and hit the net more than once in a game exactly 3 times.

Yeah Tunyc pinch it if you want

Since Carroll has went so has the threat of scoring, and it certainly has had a effect on the play with Barton as well, as he seemed to work well with Carroll, with the balls going up and creating the chances

We also lost Best at an inopportune time (I'm sure he agrees). But let's be honest, it's unlikely he's the answer.

I'm sure I read an interview with pardew recently stating its his priority to sign two strikers in the summer. Cant really remember if it was on ssn or in the chronicle. But im 99% sure it was mentioned somewhere within the last few weeks.

Best looked guaranteed to finish the season with at least 10, which would have been a fantastic tally for the lad, and well worth the money we're paying him. I'm glad he overcame his atrocious start with us and the lad looks like he could be a good poacher of some scrappy goals in a 4-4-2. However, he isn't good enough to carry the burden of attack, and I'd bet good money that Pardew is going to switch to a 4-5-1 next year as that's always been his primary formation and he's stated he wants Ben Arfa to play in the hole behind a striker (like Nolan at the beginning of the season).

I don't like to extrapolate stats for players new to a league, but yeah, Best probably would have finished with a nice talley as he looked to be in form. Remember, he should have had one more on his record as he had a perfectly good goal disallowed against Arsenal.

Ben Arfa is a legit #10 and his presence in the hole should help whoever's playing forward next season immensely.
