Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Wolves

By Tyne-Talk
April 1 2011

Newcastle United host Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow afternoon after failing to win any of their last six games. Alan Pardew’s side have drawn three and lost three from their last six, whilst Wolves have won three, drawn two and lost just one of their last six, with wins against both Manchester United and Aston Villa under their belts.

Seven places and four points separate the two sides but whilst Mick McCarthy will be hoping to climb out of the relegation zone, Pardew will be trying to push into the top half of the table. These three points are crucial for both teams.

Ryan Taylor, James Perch and Cheik Tiote are all suspended for Newcastle, whilst Joey Barton (thigh), Dan Gosling (knee), Alan Smith (ankle) and Hatem Ben Arfa (broken leg) are all definitely unavailable.

Jose Enrique (hamstring), Jonas Gutierrez (thigh), Stephen Ireland (thigh) and Leon Best (ankle) are all doubts ahead of the game.

Ronald Zubar (back), Steven Mouyokolo (knee), David Edwards (back) and Adlene Guedioure (broken leg), are all unavailable for Wolves, as is Kevin Doyle who will miss the rest of the season after damaging his knee ligaments whilst playing for Republic of Ireland.

Michael Mancienne (knee) and Steven Hunt (calf) may both make the bench.

Fact: Newcastle United have only won one of their last nine league games.

Fact: Wolves are unbeaten in their last four league games.

Mike Dean referees.

This is a must win game, with the likes of Birmingham and West Brom, we have quite a few tricky away games so we need to get as many points at home as possible, and can't see us getting out against Man U at home, if we can pick up 7 points from home then we safe.

I am going for a 2-1 Toon victory tomorrow, with a few scary moments, does anybody know of any streams for the game

Given past results, I'm not going to demand a win, or mention how desperately we need a win...

...nope, not gonna do it.

After tonight I'll see y'all on Sunday-they're showing the match over here on replay at 6pm so I'll have to avoid the board until then unless I want the result spoiled.

Enrique failed a fitness test, no Best.

Ferguson starts, Ranger, Perch (who I thought was suspended) on the bench.

Just got home and following the game via text. The match is only being shown tomorrow morning but I'm totally delighted that we are 1-0 up. Judging from BBC Live Text, we've started well and that goal was coming. Let's keep it up lads.

Happy for him. Guti catches a lot of guff for not scoring more, his final ball, etc; but he is the one player we have available not that can get at people--that's why the defender was 5 yards off him when Guti shot. Clinical finish too. Howay!

Wonderful result and up to 9th!

7 points clear of the bottom three with 7 games to play!

So instead of looking down, we should be looking up now. We are two points away from 7th!!! Well done lads and especially to Gutierrez for getting a goal today.

Just finished watching the replay. Great result, solid performance. Jonas's goal and Barton's performance will snag headlines, but I felt Ameobi was superb.

Also, great performance from young Ferguson, shame to see him limp off early.

Next week's selection will be interesting. No Tiote or Nolan. Barton and Guthrie could play central, but who plays on the right wing?

Maybe he'll think moving Danny Simpson at right wing and playing Perch/S. Taylor at right back would be the way to go.

Personally I'm hoping we get some use out of Ireland during his stay and makes an appearance...but it's against Villa. So Ireland can't play (or at least that's my understanding - a loan player can't play against the club he belongs to without the clause included in the contract, right?).

...Ryan Donaldson in CM/RM anyone?

I don't think Donaldson's sniffing the first team yet. You'd be more likely to see Richardson in the middle and Barton out wide, but I doubt that's in the starting plans. Ireland is probably close to fitness (maybe not 90 minutes yet). Is Gosling getting Reserve time atm?

Loan players can play against the team they came from unless it was part of the deal which I would imigane Villa did, but then clubs are stupid at times and we don't know all the ins and outs of the deal.

Guthrie went to Forest I know they were sniffing around for a loan deal, the other option would be to play Jonas on the right and stick Ferguson on the left

I got it wrong and thanks for putting me right

I haven't looked at the starting line up with being out for the majority of the day, and I thought he had @#$%& off. It feels like signing a new player now for me

Carys-I actually held out for the replay. Glad I did, too! Great result, and hopefully instills some confidence in the lads.

Really too bad about Ferguson and I hope he doesn't miss time. We need to run the rule over him properly before the summer.

S.hit, forgot one of our remaining games is against Villa. It's almost certain that Ireland won't be eligible to play. So that's 6 games max to evaluate him...
