Pardew In Bid To Keep S.Taylor

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has said he has held discussions with defender Steven Taylor and is keen to see the 24 year old stay at the club. Taylor who last week turned down a revised deal offered by the club is out of a contract at the end of the season and reports continue to indicate he is keen to move on.

However, Pardew said of the situation;

"I have spoken to Steven Taylor this week. I haven't had an indication that he wants to leave. It is far from resolved but I think it is a decision where Steven wants the contract to be right for him.

He wants a contract that he thinks is fair for his ability and his ability going forward. I think that is fair. That is something I will try and work out when I sit down with him and his agent.

I will try and get a resolution. I think if he could, he would stay if we can get that right. I want him to stay. I want to know what the problem is and can we resolve it.

We might not, but I am hoping we can. He is a good player and has been involved in the full England squad.

You don't want to lose a player of that calibre. My job is to ensure I do everything I can to keep him. If I don't, we have to go and get a replacement of his calibre."

Massively over rated. He's not played much since signing his last contract, so hasn't earnt a pay rise.


I say sell him for whatever we can get (2m - 6m), let Kadar be 4th place cover until the summer and pick up Wheater on a free.

The club needs to stop f@cking around give him until the 1st of Jan to sign or flog him, otherwise we will be getting messed around. I would take Wheater and I don't think Taylor is worth top money anyway

Agreed. Although I think some of the criticism of his ability or lack thereof is a bit harsh.

not bothered either way if he goes or stays. if he goes then make sure we get some money. If he stays show some loyalty taylor and stop being a bloody mercenary, remember your supposed to love this club not just the paycheck.

Some of the clubs who are after him won't pay the money and he won't go there until in the summer. There is no way he is going to leave us to go to Wolves who look like they are going down, as he won't want to play championship football next year and would certainly have a relegation clause in his contract meaning he recieves a massive pay cut.

I think he will sign or wait until the end of the season to decide

what if he goes in june, having been paid his completion bonuses for seeing his contract out? he'd be able to ask for a signing on fee as a free agent then, too. that would be a couple of years worth of wages, before he started actually playing for another team.

so would he be better of leaving, financially speaking? i tend to think so, in the short to medium term at least.

He could have all of the above, if I was a money grabbing b@st@rd I would wait as the money he will a good wedge of us, and then his new club for signing on and then add on his wages.

Plus the advantage is he will be starting the season new rather than taking a risk that the club may go down if signed in Jan, meaning that he would only have a few months of premiership football

thats his bargaining power in a nutshell ttid. an agent will use this to make things happen in january, if possible.
he says to the club 'my player will cost you 3m to see his contract out, so let him go now for free/very cheap'.
the buying club says to newcastle 'we'll take him off your hands cheap/free, as he'll cost you if he stays'.
speaking generally, as we dont really know how keen taylor is to stay or go, this kind of persuasion would get a motivated player a move away for less than his going rate in such a situation, and when that happens, the players agent says to the buying club, 'you're getting a bargain, stick a few thousand on his wages or we'll go somewhere else'.
its hard for nufc to win from here if taylor really wants to score a big payday, as he either finds a club and moves early, or waits for his payout in june, then finds one.

one thing strikes me writing this, if taylor does end up staying, and we assume that that would be on more modest wages than he wanted, he would probably deserve credit for doing so, though not for his protracted stance waiting for an offer.

If he does he deserves credit, as I think we all at times slam the players without knowing what goes on behind the scenes. The problem is that he shouldn't have waited so long, if he does sign
