Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton, has confirmed he would choose to stay at the club and in the region if he gets the opportunity. With a contract up for negotiation in January, the tabloids have had a field day, speculating whether Hughton was set for the sack after a shaky start to the season.

However, the club have confirmed that contract talks will open in the New Year. Hughton told the Sunday Sun;

"How good a job have I done? I don't know, other people have to say that. I'm just delighted to be manager of this football club and in a position to do this. I have one eye on the future. You have to.

The aim is to be in this division next season. What you have to do, irrespective of where you end up, is make plans. There are always opportunities to bring players in.

Do I see myself as the main man in the middle of all that? I hope so, I hope so, yes. I've thoroughly enjoyed the period of time I've been at the club.

Would I like to stay at this club? Absolutely yes. I've fallen for the region and the club. I thoroughly enjoy living up here and the area.

It is a magnificent club with a support that will let you know their feelings because they are a passionate support.

I can see what this club means to the supporters and of course I would love to be involved. I would love to be at this football club next season."

Managers, unlike Players are far more likely to be loyal to a club. I think Hughton will stay as long as he's getting a fair wage (which he isn't right now). We gave him his first post, no other club had offered him that before.

i would rather see him offered a rolling contract than sign him up on a long deal and come the end of the season have to pay a load of compensation when he is sacked if things dont go right

hes proved me wrong like,,after been in premier as caretaker i wasnt absolutely convinced by him at start of season,,fantastic job hes doin and has the whole city and fans the good feel factor now,,id say give him a new 2 year contract

This is going to get nasty, just you watch. Ashley will try to low ball him at some point and CH will rightly say "@#$%& OFF", once the media get a hold of that it will blow up!

This always seems to be the case. If they can keep negotiations in house, get it done quickly and quitly then we will be better off!

Another sticking point will be the transfer budget. I know that Hughton has always said (publicly) that Ashley has backed him 100% - but I doubt Ashley will give him any real guarentees in the market going forward.
