Player Ratings v West Ham (A)

By Wasim
October 23 2010

Cheik Tiote was awarded Man Of The Match by Tyne-Talk's resident player rater Wasim4nufc for his performance at Upton Park earlier on today. With high scores all round and goals from Nolan and Carroll, read on to see how the rest of the team faired..........................

Player Ratings

Tim Krul (7.5) - I thought the young Dutch keeper had a good game between the posts. Dealt superbly with corners and crosses and looked assured in goal.

Danny Simpson (7) - He was seriously troubled by Obinna in the first half but he came back and had a good second half, with Obinna being kept quiet. Due to it being his first Premier League match for us and coming off a long injury lay off, he gets a 7 rating.

Mike Williamson (7) - Should not have allowed the cross to come in for their goal, but was a towering presence thereafter and kept the West Ham attackers quiet in the second half.

Fabricio Coloccini (7) - The man who was at fault for their goal, playing the West Ham players on side, came back and like his fellow teammates had a much more solid game once we fell behind. He's calm influence seems to have rubbed off on the team.

Jose Enrique (8) - Another excellent display by Wor Jose. Heard the fans chanting his name a few times in this match and if I were there I'd be joining them.

Joey Barton (7) - I had my concerns about him playing on the right but after a poor first half he came into his own in the second half. He superbly set up the winning goal and helped us control things for the most part. Despite that poor first half, he still managed to put in the cross that led to Nolan's goal as well.

Cheik Tiote (8) - What a performance by the defensive midfielder. He won the central midfield battle and was simply like a rock. Excellent in possession, solid in the tackle and powerful as always he fully deserves the man of the match award for me.

Kevin Nolan (7.5) - I will admit I was one of the first to question the manager's decision to play Nolan in central midfield but he somehow silenced me and many others by getting the equaliser and ultimately had a good game.

Jonas Gutierrez (7) - With us playing only one natural winger, Jonas helped us go forward and was very direct. He put in another good shift.

Shola Ameobi (6) - Not his best game of the season but he did his job. He troubled West Ham at times and worked hard for the team.

Andy Carroll (7.5) - A much improved game by Carroll, who took a while to get into the match but when he did, he managed to get an assist as well as the winning goal. Made one or two great runs with the ball and looked like the Carroll at the beginning of the season again, with his confidence flowing.

Man of the Match - Cheik Tiote

well i thought shola had a decent enough game, colo i thught was our best defender and seems to be now more what we originally thought we had bought. Jose was good but there were a couple of times he give the ball away in bad areas though his running and his link up play with jonas was very good.

3 points is the main thing now just 3 more in our next league game against some more crap opposition who is it again .... ?

Tiote was class, Cant see why sky gave Barton MM, just for the cross, Tiote pulled his weight all game, barton gave the ball away on numerous occasions,

obviously they award the assists or goals, rather than work done accross the pitch........

One thing I noticed and forgot to talk about was the way Carroll remained out wide sometimes. I prefer if he is in the box causing trouble and getting onto the end of crosses instead of being out wide.

Shola I do think didn't have a bad game, but he didn't test Green enough for me. One or two shots were just way off target where he could and should have done better. He put in a good shift though and like I said he did his job.

There were quite a few times when Barton was in space on the right the ball was given to Jonas who then often got stopped by 2 defenders.

I think we played reasonably well but I would not have been so generous with the ratings.

My reason's for being so generous with the ratings is that firstly we fell behind and showed great character to come back and win the match. Secondly Simpson came back from an injury and actually got stronger as the game went on. Williamson and Colo kept Cole quiet after their goal while Tiote and Barton started to influence things in the second half to the point that if we did not win it would have been very disappointing. Furthermore Nolan and Carroll got on the score sheet with neat finishes so all in all we were deserved winners and with it being an away game I felt most of the players deserved at least a 7.

agree with some of the ratings wasim,

colocinni should of got a higher rating than williamson, not only defensively better but also much more of an attacking threat!

Apart from the goal i thought Nolan was out of his depth in central midfield, he was out paced, bullied off the ball and generally no good in this position, if we are playing 4-4-2 we need to be playing one of our other cm's

Ameobi deserved a higher rating, he may not have had a lot of shots or scored the goal like carroll however his workrate was a vast improvement from the Ameobi of past, he was chasing balls making runs out wide to pull defenders out of position and creating space in and around the box

Tiote was my man of the match however i can see why Barton was given it!

I wouldn't handicap Simpson's score-he was terrorized by Obinna and often beaten for pace. He'll get better but for now, teams are going to continue to attack our RB until we stop them.

Speaking relatively, not sure how Barton gets the same rating as Simpson when he made both goals. The only problem was how deep into our half he dropped at times.

Agree that Shola could have done more. Seems like I say that after 9 of 10 games he starts.

Carroll going out wide-what the hell was that? You're a 6'6", 13 stone lump-get your hands dirty, son!
