After opting for just a white ball contract with his County Nottinghamshire, last year, Alex Hales asked to be left out of the home sides 50 over London Cup win over Lancashire, with the club citing 'personal reasons'.
With a world cup looming and Hales in a battle for an opening slot alongside Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, the timing couldn't have come at a worse time for the 30 year old.
After being named in the provisional world cup squad that is due to meet up later this month, a small statement on the Notts website went "Alex Hales has made himself unavailable for selection for personal reasons and no timetable has been set for his return to action."
Although it is not known at this time if the reasons are linked, but Hales hit the tabloids again just a couple of months ago, with reports that his relationship with his then girlfriend had broken down due to off the field activities out in Barbados, where the England one day team were touring.
All of this of course, follows the now infamous Bristol incident, where both Hales and all rounder Ben Stokes found themselves in hot water, following a fracas outside a nightclub.
Hales, one of the most gifted one day players in the country, will be missed should his 'absence' go into what could be a defining World Cup year.
