This morning’s News of the World has linked former player Stephen Hughes with a return to Fir Park.
Hughes had a successful spell at Fir Park between the 2007 and 2009 when Mark McGhee was in charge at the club. This earned him a move to Norwich City, who at that time were in League 1 and helped them to promotion to the Championship.
This season he only made one sub appearance as Norwich won a second successive promotion, and was eventually loaned out to League 1 side MK Dons. Even at Milton Keynes he struggled for games make only two starts and four sub appearances.
He has been told by Norwich Boss Paul Lambert he will not feature next season even though he has one season left on his contract Motherwell born Hughes is looking to but himself out of his contract and find a new club.
The News of the World has said this morning that Stuart McCall would be keen to bring him back to Fir Park, but St. Johnstone and Aberdeen are also interested. This follows on from stories in midweek linking him with St. Mirren.
During his last spell at Fir Park he played over 70 games in two seasons and was on the brink of a Scotland call up before heading south. He will be only 29 this year and should be close to his peak and if his confidence can be rebuilt I believe he would bring a bit of extra quality to our midfield.
