Should there be a minutes silence for Phil at Cup Final

In this morning’s News of the World, Cup winning goalie Ally Maxwell has asked for a minute’s silence for Phil O’Donnell.

Maxwell claims he would be “angry” if this was not done given O’Donnell played for both teams and it is the 20th anniversary of him scoring in the 1991 Final.

I was a huge fan of Phil O’Donnell during both his spells at Fir Park BUT I do not want to see this Final turned into the Phil Final. This is a final for the current squad and they will have enough reminders of the 1991 squad in the coming weeks.

This is not to be disrespectful to the memory of Phil O’Donnell but there have been numerous tributes paid already and I don’t think we should single him out for this honour given the passing of Davie Cooper, Jamie Dolan and Paul McGrillen who were also at the club in1991.

I always felt the League Cup Final was hijacked a bit by being called the Davie Cooper Final simply because he had played for both sides.

Hopefully the SFA decide this is unnecessary and we turn up on 21st May for a game of football and celebrating our third Cup success in our history. Then after the game we can add another set of names alongside the legends of 1952 and 1991.
