Club make statement on SPL reconstruction

Motherwell Vice Chairman Derek Weir has put a statement on the club website giving his opinion on the recommendations for the future of the SPL.

Weir was a member of the Strategy group that recommended the change to two Leagues of 10 amongst other things, and today issued a statement on his position as far as the changes are concerned.

He makes a point of stressing his own credibility as a fan before going on to say the opinions of the fans are important, and he is please there is now consultation between SPL Chairmen and Supporters Trusts.

But the bulk of the statement centres on the needs of the media and their requirement to feature the “top clubs” on a regular basis. As has been underlying in all statements recently this means the Old Firm, who from what I can see are on TV every week at the moment and aren’t exactly Box Office, as I am sure Setanta will testify!

While it is pleasing we have a fan who is in a position of power both at the club and within the SPL, it would have been even more pleasing if all of the clubs or the Strategy group had maybe consulted the fans before making their recommendations.

The clubs now seem to be in a reactive mode given the reaction of the fans since the meeting earlier this week. It would appear they all thought fans would roll over and accept whatever we were fed and have been shocked by the reaction.
