Motherwell made hard work of securing three points against bottom of the table St. Mirren to secure their first home win in the League since March.

After a blistering start Motherwell made heavy weather of the game, but two late goals sealed all three points.

Well started the game in the best possible manner when Chris Humphrey netted his first for the club. David Van Zanten only half cleared a Tom Hateley free kick and Humphrey left Samson no chance with a blistering shot from 18 yards.

We dominated the first thirty minutes of the first half, and came close through Hateley’s free kick which hit the bar and a Blackman shot which was saved by Samson.

Things changed in the closing fifteen minutes of the first half when firstly Wardlaw somehow headed over from close range and then Higdon heading against the cross bar.

The Saints started the second half the better side again and they were deservedly back on level terms on 65 minutes. We failed to deal with a free kick and Jennings clearance reached McGowan just outside the box, he rolled it into the feet of Wardlaw who turned his man to fire high past Randolph.

It was one way traffic as Saints pushed for a winner but they were stung in the 86th minute when they gave away a stupid penalty. Lee Mair played a pass back to Samson who slipped, to help his keeper Mair stepped across Alan Gow and a penalty was correctly awarded.

After some debate Hateley stepped up to take it and rifled the ball low into the bottom right hand corner leaving Samson helpless even though he went the right way.

Things got better for Well in the final minute, Alan Gow beat the offside trap and scampered into the 18 yard box. He looked up and unselfishly picked out Jamie Murphy at the far post and he smashed the ball into the net from 8 yards out.

This was Well’s first home win in the League since March and they rode their luck in this one, but they can also point to the lack of luck against Aberdeen and Hibs earlier this season.
