Off to York for the 4th game of the Metrobank 50. We rest Langridge, Davey, Ogborne, Hill and Roberts from the last game and give a first team start to James Theedom in this game. Aldridge, Green, Leach and Ball also return. We've won the toss and will bowl first

The team for today sees some changes but not up the front end;
Lammonby, Vaughan, Goldsworthy, Rew J (c and wk), Rew T, Thomas, Green, Aldridge, Leach, Ball, Theedom
Resting davey, Ogborne, Roberts, Hill and Langridge is pretty much replacing the back 5 of the side and James Theedom is the last member of the named 50 over squad to get a run out this August.
Lyth and Bean open for the Yorkshiremen, no Imam Ul Haq in the Dom Bess team today.
Jake Ball opens to Lyth who gets off the mark with a first ball boundary. The first over goes for 6 and then Ben Green opens from the other end (is this the first time he has opened the bowling?). After 2 overs the score has moved to 10.
After 5 the Tykes have doubled that with a boundary from the last ball so the opening bowlers ahve pulled it back a little. In the 7th, Ball strikes, taking Lyth's off stump out of the ground with an absolute peach and he leaves for 13 from 17 at 22 for 1. In comes Luxton. Who makes a mistake on a fumble after a routine push and he is run out as Josh Thomas takes out the middle stump at the non striker's end. 21 for 2 and Yorkshire are missing Imam Ul Haq who has a hip flexor issue - so it may not be a quick fix for them. We also hear that Mighael Pretorius is out with aan ankle niggle presently so the surprise of him not being included is explained.
Wharton is the next man in and Ball finishes the 7th with 2 wickets at 23 for 2 but he goes before the 'Powerplay' ends as Green finds the Yorkshire bat's edge and a good low take from Rew, one handed to his right sends him on his way for 3 from 7 at 28 for 3. Revis strides out with a job to do as Yorkshire have to rebuild from this first 10 overs. Not enough runs and too many wickets down for a first innings. He drives the second ball through extra cover to start his account. 10 overs down and 32 for 3 is not what Yorkshire would have liked.
Kasey replaces Ball at the City end for the 13th at 41 for 3. Theedom takes his first with the 14th and Bean takes Yorkshire over 50 to 53 in the middle of the over. as Somerset starts the 15th Yorkshire have moved on to 57 as James goes for 13 in his first - welcome to the 'Big Boys' League Mr Theedom.
He does better in his second over and in his third (18th) Bean carves a ball to Goldsworthy and goes for 28 off 53 at 72 for 4. Theedom now has 1 for 17 as George Hill comes to the middle. The 18 year old finishes his third with 1 for 18. A good comeback.
The 20th over is Theedom's 4th, this is a different 'press' to the usual Somerset one with Green opening the bowling. There has been no slow bowling yet from any of the number of Somerset spinners. With 30 to go, the Yorkshire score moves to 86 for 4 as we see the first slow introduction as Jack comes on from the City end for the 21st. He goes for 5 from his first.
Theedom takes his fifth as the home side look for 3 figures. Defending that isn't helped by an unusual misfield on the boundary by Archie to give away a four but James keeps them to 98 in the 22nd. Jack sees them take a quick double to get the 100 off his 2nd ball. Revis has 40 at a run a ball and Hill has 13 from 16.
Revis goes to 50 from 49 with 6 fours at 115 for 4 in the 25th over. Halfway and Yorkshire probably think they are behind where they should be at this point. Somerset have operated a different bowling attack for this game but will be happy with a score well below a 250 full innings target at the moment.
Lammonby replaces James for the 28th at 121 for 4. It's good to see us using him on a regular basis because if he is going to be of any use to us then he needs to get used to regular spells and he is a lefty which is useful, especially when Alfie is not included in the eleven. The Yorkshire partnership goes past 50 in the over with Revis the leading scorer but Hill has settled himself in now and this is becoming quite significant in the scheme of things today.
After 30 Yorkshire are onto 138 for 4 and therefore are thinking about 270 at the end. That is if they do not lose wickets in clumps before the last 10 one would imagine. The commentators reckon about 280 is probably enough. We shall see I suppose.
At the end of the 32nd over the home side reaches 150 with Revis on 66 and Hill on 35. Aldridge returns for the 33rd with 30 from his first 6. Green comes back on at the other Rugby Club end after going for 20 from his first 6. There has been a change in intent from the the batting pair and they might be looking to push it on from here. Archie misfields again and it goes through his legs again! Unusual stuff in front of a Yorkshire crowd from Mr Vaughan and they will aprreciate it and give him jip because of it!!
With 15 overs to go, after digging the Tykes out of a hole, a partnership of 96 has moved Yorkshire to 170 for 4 and the 100 partnership arrives from the first Green ball of the 36th. Revis drives the next and is out for 85 from 85 balls at 174 caught in the covers by Tom Lammonby. Ain't it always the way?
In comes wicket keeper Harry Duke to face Lammonby as a bowler in the 37th. He gets Duke for 7 with his last ball as the keeper drops the ball onto his middle stump. 183 for 6 brings Dom Bess to the crease!! Oh What fun!!
Ball is re-introduced to test the Yorkshire skipper in the 38th. With under 11 to come Yorkshire move 195 before Hills flaps a bouncing ball to mid on and Kasey takes the catch. Hill goes for 41 from 57. Not a good shot and not a good time for him to go. In comes Milnes with the 200 still not there and only 3 wickets left.
Yorkshire are still below 200 as we reach 40 overs and Jack looks to hold the press into the last 10. Bess gets them past that with a reverse sweep four to take himself to 18 and his side to 203 for 7. Lammonby then gets the opposing skipper driving into the hands of Thomas Rew at 204 for 8. Not a great shot and not a difficult catch as Bess goes for 19 from 14 and in comes Moriarty with nearly 9 overs left. Tom L has 2 for 35.
Leach bowls out in the 47th and Moriarty takes him for 2 sixes (the only two so far) at the end of his spell of 10 for 58 and the score moves to 233 for 8 with 15 coming off the England spinner's last over. Kasey will now bowl out in the 48th having gone for 41 from his previous 9 without getting a victim. They are going for it as they reach 247 for 8 at the end of the 49th as Ball gets Moriarty to top edge to Green for 30 at 247 for 9. Which is 247 all out as Ball gets 4 for 34 as Cliff lifts the ball to short extra cover caught by Tom Lammonby.
That score is under par as far as most people agree but the runs are on the board and Somerset have to get them. Somerset need 248

Matt Milnes starts the Yorkshire attack from the City end to Archie Vaughan (this is his first appearance against his 'home' county). He is off the mark off the 3rd ball and Tom Lammonby will face the next ball. He stays on zero as the first iover ends with 1 on the board. From the Rugby club end Ben Cliff starts his afternoon. Vaughan gets the first boundary to the midwicket rope and the over ends with another boundary before it's completed. 11 for 0 after 2.
By the end of the 3rd, Somerset have moved on to 21 mostly in boundaries and mostly coming from the bat of Vaughan though Lammonby gets in on the act at the end of the last one with a lovely straight drive.
5 overs gone and Somerset have reached 29 from them at a run rate higher than is required to reach the Yorkshire total.
Hill replaces Cliff for the 8th at 35 for 0 and he has Lammonby swinging, top edging and gone for 11 from 20. Lyth runs back and takes the skier at short third man. 36 for 1 and Lewis Goldsworthy comes to the workface after not being asked to bowl today.
At 10 overs the visitors have moved on to 48 and they pass 50 in the 11th from Milnes with the first four from Goldsworthy taking the score to 53 for 1. Hill is bowling very tightly with 3 overs for 6 and 1 victim but Somerset keep moving and have reached 65 for 1 with 41 tio Vaughan and 13 to Goldsworthy after 15 overs.
Bess brings on his own spin in the 18th for the first time against his old team mates as Archie gets a 50 in his sights and something he gets to in 65 balls with 6 fours at the start of the 19th over bowled by Moriarty at 75 for 1.
After 20 overs the visitors are in a strong position with 89 runs to their name needing 159 runs in the next 30 overs with 9 wickets in hand. Vaughan is leading the way with 51 while his partner Lewis Goldsworthy has 25. They are being cautious but they do not look in any real trouble with any of the bowlers up to this point so confidence is presently high - though we all know what supporting Somerset can be like.
The spin of Bess has gone for 7 runs off his 3 overs while the spin of Moriarty at the other end has gone for 25 from his 4. The only thing the bats need to keep in mind is that they keep up with the modest run rate and don't get bogged down when they don't need to. A slow scoring rate can become difficult to get out of if you get behind on it. Presnetly they are hitting at just over 4 when they need to hit at just over 5. it is not an issue now but in the second half of the game they need to be aware of the needs of scoring.
The 100 arrives off a flashed four from Archie which moves the score to 102 at the end of the 23rd.
Revis comes on to bowl at the Rugby club end for the 25th and Goldsworthy top edges one and is caught by Moriarty on the boundary at 111 for 2 for 30 from 39. In comes the captain. The halfway mark sees Somerset reaching 'Nelson'.
With 30 overs done, the scoring rate is not exactly stellar! 132 for 2 is fine but it is slow enough to need the partners to be aware that they do need to keep pushing a score along as the required run rate has moved to nearly 6 so a smattering of boundaries is needed as we move into the last 20 overs.
Lyth bowls the 34th and the 150 arrives as Rew picks up a ball and puts it into the crowd for six 151 for 2 with Vaughan on 85 and Rew on 22. They need 96 at the end of that over at 153 for 2. They have 16 overs to get them in and the bats move to a 50 partneship from 60 balls at 161 for 2.
With 15 overs left they have moved to needing 86 from 90 balls. After 37 overs, Archie reaches 95 and Somerset are at 174 for 2 but he doesn't get to his ton as he looks to drive a ball from Bess and is bowled for an excellent 95 from 126 at 175 for 3. A shame but it was a patient and solid innings. He may have thrown away a century but he has been the backbone of this innings. If we win this then HE is the reason for that as he gave Dopm the charge and madea mistake. 1 ball from 126 is acceptable and a 19 year old making 95 is fine by me.
Thomas Rew comes out to join his brother with 75 runs still needed and we need to manage this run a ball chase confidently to make sure we get there. These kinds of chases can be dangerous if batting line-ups start to panic. 175 for 3 needing 73 from 72 balls.
I'm getting worried that we are getting bogged down in this one. We are 10 overs away and we need 70 from 60. Thomas Rew still has not got off the mark and he may become a little frustrated. We could muck this one up if we are not careful.
Dom Bess bowls out with a skipper's 10 overs for 27 at 182 for 3 and we need 66 from 54 as Hill returns. Thomas Rew goes for him with a six and a four and the brothers take 14 off the 42nd. The 200 arrives in the next one from a Thomas Rew four off Moriarty and he is nearly run out ball watching the next ball as a direct hit at the non striker's end is seen as clearly out by the Yorkies but luckily not the replay or the umpire. The young man sixes Cliff of the first of there 44th and we need 30 from 36 at the end of the 44th at 218 for 3.
Revis takes the 45th and after 3 singles Thomas fires the ball straight to Dom Bess the long on boundary fielder and he goes for 31 from 27, 221 for 4. In comes Josh Thomas with the skipper at 49. He goes to 50 from 54 with the first ball of Milnes 46th over.
Josh is determined to have something to say in this one so he comes in firing and they are 229 for 4 as Lyth comes in for the 47th with 2 left handers at the crease. Thomas goes to 13 from 11 by the end of the 47th and they need 9 at the end of the 48th from Milnes.
Hill bowls the penultimate one and Josh sends his first arounf the corner for four leaving 5 needed. He then takes the single and so does the skipper. One boundary needed. another single moves it to 2 needed and they take it to the last over at 246 for 4.
James Rew sends Milnes for six into the crowd and takes the points at 252 for 4 with a personal score of 53 from 62 while Thomas impresses again at the end of the innings with 27 from 18. Somerset win by 6 wickets with 5 balls to spare.
They will say they judged that to perfection I have to say I'm glad we have Thomas Rew in the side now to put the hammer down when it was needed. It was too slow in the 20s and 30s for me and a little too close to the end of the game to be completely comfortable for me. They need to move through the gears a little more smoothly and that may mean moving people about the order depending on what is required because unless the momentum is started it tends to almost rumble to a halt.
Nevertheless, we beat the only undefeated side in the group and move on to Warwickshire on the weekend.

Somerset will face their in-form former overseas player Imam-ul-Hag, who has notched centuries in Yorkshire last two One-Day matches. He played three championship matches for Somerset at the end of the 2022 season, scoring 177 runs in six innings, including 90 opening the batting in a draw with Glo`shire.

Can't see the first six names there NOT playing. Personally would like to see Alfie continue through all these games and get a real work out. Fin Hill may well miss out and then it depends if we go with another seamer. To be brutally honest, Jake Ball has given us more with the ball in the first couple of games so maybe Kasey should sit it out if we go with spin?

With not as much media coverage for these games it is important members and supporters are kept informed on rationale behind squad selection.

Another excellent spell from Jake Ball... I'm coming around more to extending his contract for the year given the situqtion we find ourselves in but only 1 year and only as backup.
We were a little too close in this one and we let Dom and his side dictate the pace a little too much through the middle overs.
But we got there so
That ground looks very attractive and it was good to see so many people there revelling in the sunshine, I am sure they appreciated a near-century by a Yorkshire-born man, whose father wasn't one. Vaughan Again!
I thought the commentary was very good, but the frequent interruptions in the sound were irritating and the camera work was nothing like as good as we are used to at home matches.

I think they find it easier to chase than to assess during an innings and set a total. Remember though the advent of the 💯 and the downgrading of the ODC means the Second XI Trophy was lost to the ether. Players who have come through the academy system have had no competitive 50-over county cricket between age-group competitions and county first team level for five years now. It's a format they are learning on the hoof.
Actually, I'd like to raise that figure to 28, but I admit to a bias, having spent much of my working life in seriously warm countries, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, India and Indonesia to name a few... (Lhasa, at 3800 metres) is not particularly hot in high summer, though it would scare the life out of those who nexaggerate the effect of the weather here).
Some of you may recall a photograph on the front page of the WDP in August 2022 (now that WAS a hot summer), showing Tractor, Des, myself and others revelling in the sunshine on Gimblett's Hill on a day when people had been warned not to travel unless the need to do so was imperativee (as in my case it definitely was as I had to travel to Taunton for the cricket).

I agree with some of this. A few days, no matter how warm or hot, doesn't constitute anything more than a few days of hot weather.
I lived in Sydney for nearly a year and it was generally warm that summer, but I was working in a warehouse - big, thick walls, quite cool inside - and went out for lunch and it was 42C. That was warm.
I've also spent a lot of time cycling in Asia and I used to say it was never too hot for cycling, until one day when I was riding in Thailand and a thermometer in the semi-shade read 40C. I was sweltering...
Laos and Cambodia had their moments too...
Last winter our exemplary government might have issued warnings about cold weather on the way, explaining that old people would need to wear coats in their homes because it had cancellent their winter fuel allowance...
