So we return to long format cricket on a sunny Sunday in Birmingham. Who will open? Who will take Lewis Gregory's place? Who will bowl? All questions up for speculation. Somerset have won the toss and will bat first. The sun is out and we are ready to go. Rew, Pretorius, Vaughan and Leach all return, TKC will open with Davey and Craig will skipper as Lewis is away on 'Daddy' duty.
CC1 V Warwickshire @ Edgbaston Sunday 22 June 2025
A new mix in the eleven for the return to 4 day cricket as we go through the 'mis phase' games before the return to the Blast and 'Franchise August'. There are a couple now then the rest of the league Blast games and then one at the end of July (v Notts at Trent Bridge).
Somerset have won the toss and will bat first as TKC and Josh Davey walk out to open!! Interesting

Bamber opens the Warwickshire bowling and there is a confident LBW appeal against TKC in the first over turned down by the umpire. They take 2 at the end of the over as Hannon-Dalby takes the second. By the 5th it has calmed down a little. Both bats have reached the outer ring and we have moved on to 19 with TKC on 13 from his 18 and Josh on 5 from the 12. Hannon Dalby is bowling very tightly from the City End and only 13 runs have come from Bamber's 3 overs from our Media end so it is a decent opening spell from the Brum bowlers.
For a Sunday there is a pretty sparse crowd - though the bigger 'bowl' venues do make a low turnout look even worse. The media facilities tend to be in the pavilion where most members also tend to congregate so looking out at the other 2 thirds of the ground always looks 'worse than it really is' but it isn't a big crowd. I suppose lots of money is spent on the T20s and there was a double header here on Friday - we are using the same pitch.
A possible indicator of the nature of the next 4 days comes with the introduction of Jacob Bethell in the 11th over of Day 1. TKC likes the look and Josh also goes for him - not much fun when you are taken for a straight 6 and a 4 by a 'Somerset number 9' in your first over!! He goes for 13 and we are 1 run away from 50 at the start of Hannon-Dalby's 6th and the 12th of the match!! Jack might be a little interested in this as TKC drives for 4 to bring up the Somerset 50 with his contribution being 28 from 39 and his partner with 23 from 28.
Bethel moves to 1 for 22 off 2 as Simmons comes on from the City End for the first time in the game. At 62 for 0 he ties it down a little and the England man gets into his stride a little more with a 1 run third over. The lights are on for the 17th over as the sky has greyed and looks a little dismal one has to admit. The umpires take the sides off as the hover cover arrives at 71 for 0 with TKC on 41 and Davey on 24. The weather has really rolled in from the City End in the last half hour. It was much more promising at 11. Maybe the crowds in Birmingham know more than we do about the local conditions :-)
An early lunch is taken at 12:40 and as we start it out comes the sun!! But we don't get to start early as the rain returns just as they decide to remove the covers so on they come again and are pegged down for a long wait. However it dries a little quicker and after being told we will lose 10 overs of the day's play we resume somewhere around 2pm.
Interesting info from the local press. On the announcement that Bethell was going to play in this one the local Midlands press coverage was switched from the top of the table Notts v Yorkshire at Trent Bridge to here on the basis that Bethell was being given some 4 day cricket in relation to the "Pope debate". However, as the England VC got a 100 at 3 in the Test at Leeds yesterday, that story was dead in the cradle before he even picked the ball up today.
Resumption at 2pm, 10 overs lost Tea at 4:10pm. The floodlights are still on and there is some pretty heavy looking grey stuff over Birmingham centre but it's really very bright in the middle presently. Although it predicts a late finish tonight, there is heavy rain expected at 6pm so that may change things.
The odd ball to finish the over before the rain is bowled and then Simmons is on from the City end. His 'loosener' is swatted to the pavilion boundary by TKC to move him to 45. They move on to 77 at the end of effectively the first after lunch. Bamber then returns from the Pavilion and is immediately holding the bats in check. The Somerset pair seem keen to get on with it and are looking to run between the wickets which nearly gets them into trouble. However TKC finally connects with a Simmons ball and goes to a 67 ball 50 including 9 fours via a City end boundary at 85 for 0.
Towards the end of the 24th, Somerset take the partnership to 100 with TKC on 59 from 80 and Josh on 33 from 65. A significant increase in our first wicket scores in the opening innings of 4 day games for some time. One stat that has been missed recently is that Josh Davey has not had a duck in an innings for 60 visits to the middle in a row ('George' Burns holds the record at 64).
With 110 on the board at the start of the 26th we see Cory ROCCHICCOLI for the first time. His first as a 'Bear' is a maiden. To complete the changes, Hannon-Dalby changes ends to come in from the Pavilion instead. However, we carry on with the highest first inning opening partnership since April 2024 and Josh starts to consider the possibility of a 50. After 29 overs it has reached 118 with Davey into the 40s.
At 140 Josh arrives at 50 from 98 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. An excellent and patient score from the newly designated opener. This is his first 50 at the front end of the batting order. Meanwhile TKC motors on at the other end with his sights on the 150 without loss and his own possible 3 figure score.
The 150 arrives from the first ball of the Aussie spinner's 6th over from the bat of TKC. It moves him on to 87 from 111 in a overall partnership of 215 balls.
Simmons changes ends to give some variation. TKC drives him for four to move to 98 at 164 (beating our record 10th wicket partnership of 163 by Ian Blackwell and Nixon McLean against Derbyshire at Taunton in 2003). The first ball of Simmons next over is pulled with confidence and TKC moves to 102 from 128 at 180 for 0 with 16 fours and 2 sixes.
Finally Warwickshire breakthrough as Simmons tucks up Josh Davey he's caught at deep fine leg by Barnard departing for an excellent 64 from 121 balls in a 186 run partnership which is our best for at least 3 years (since the 172 against Gloucestershire in 2022). In comes Tom Lammonby after a bit of a break from the middle since the early Blast games, facing a tense time either side of the upcoming Tea interval after a longer than usual wait to get into this game with the bat.
But before that we see the end of a superb innings from Tom Kohler-Cadmore who is out top edging a hook to Smith from Simmons at 187 for 2. His 104 came off 138 balls and included those 16 fours and the two sixes. He comes off to a generous round of applause as James Rew passes him to go out to the middle after another long time away.
The new pair work through until Tea leaving the field at 195 for 2 with Rew on 3 and Lammonby on 6. Again, thanks to Dan Kingdom (on Twitter) for his stats. Today's first wicket stand was the highest since Banger and Tom Abell put on 272 against Hampshire in Taunton in September 2015 (thank you Dan).
After Tea we look to move past 200 quickly to get into the next part of the innings. Both these bats need time at the crease and they have the luxury of having time they haven't had many times in the past to set this middle stage of an innings on a solid base made by the opening pair. One comment made in the press box today was how little the bats seemed to know about each other in terms of running between the wickets. We pointed out that they have rarely had long partnerships to get used to each bat's foibles in terms of calling and running so it's a little more understandable in the bigger picture!!
The 200 arrives from Lammonby during the 52nd over off Rocchiccioli who, although he has gone for 51 from his 15 overs does have something about him that needs to be taken seriously. The 54th ends with Somerset on 210 for 2
Warwickshire introduced Barnard for the first time with the 51st over and he went for 6 in his first 2. The 55th is his third and he finishes at 0 for 8 as the score moves on to 212. The after Tea work is slow but the bats keep at their job and the 50 partnership arrives at 237 with Rew on 22 from 54 and Lammonby on 25 from 70. It's been a hard slog through to the 64th over as the Bear's Aussie and Barnard keep it tight. There are still 22 overs in the day at 5:30 but the weather may close in as the grey is building up around the ground, especially in the area that has been trouble all day, over central Birmingham.
Bamber returns from the Pavilion end for the 65th as Somerset look towards their first batting bonus point just 7 runs away. We pass it easily and both bats look to move on to indivdual targets in the last hour of the day as their partnership passes 80 in the 70th over and they chase each other into the 40s.
While 'Rock Chick' as the Warks people are calling him, comes in from the City End, Hannon-Dalby returns to the pavilion to try and keep the Somerset pair in check . Tom Lammonby sends him to the boundary but he sends a slow short wide one to James Rew and almost fools him into giving his wicket away when he seemed to have all the time in the world. He is caught by Bethell for 38 from 81 at 275 for 3 bringing Tom Abell to the crease after having quite a quiet first day of a Somerset 4 day game for once in his long career!!
He joins Lammonby on 47 from 92 who must be hoping that 1 breakthrough does not become 2 as he moves towards a 50. Yates is now spinning in from the City end to ask a few more questions and the new man is a little hesitant to answer them just at the moment. We pass 6 pm with 13 overs to go with the Warwickshire bowlers not giving up on the chance of getting at least another wicket tonight. The inner ring is sharp and runs have dried up as the lights come back on while the cloud still builds over the Birmingham city skyline.
Simmons looks to put a last spell in at the City End before play ends replacing the spin that has been delivered from that end all afternoon. Lammonby faces him on 49 at 281 for 3. He spins and pulls the first ball of the new spell to the boundary to reach a 98 ball 50 with 8 fours. Tom L moves to 53 and Somerset go to 285 for 3. He's been very patient waiting for that and he deserves the reward for the hard work in the late afternoon.
With 10 overs to go in the day the visitors reach 190 for 3. Yates is moved to the Pavilion end to keep the variation going. The score moves to 293 for 3 after the 77th. Simmons is sent to the boundary by Abell to move it to 297 and then a couple take it to 299 before another Abell boundary gives us our second bonus point at 303 for 3 with Tom A moving to 16 from 29. We are 2 overs from the new balls so the home side will get two goes at the batting tonight and then tomorrow morning. IF they take it. Simmons gets the 80th with the old one which is doing him no favours as his 13 over day passes the 60 runs mark. He does produce a vicious bouncer to finish that one. So with 6 overs to go Bamber takes the new ball from the Pavilion end with 313 for 3 showing in the fading light of Day 1.
They add 3 from the 81st and Hannon-Dalby takes over from the City end for number 82 in a long day given the rain break. The light has improved a little and it may not rain now with only 4 to go to the close. 323 with 4 to go. 1 more run with 18 balls left. However there is still the chance for one more surprise before the end of the day which has been Somerset's at the moment. I'm not sure anything that now happens will change that.
The 75 ball 50 partnership arrives at 325 with Abell on 18 from 40 and Lammonby on 75 from 124. It's another milestone but the applause lacks a certain 'enthusiasm' that things like that earlier in the day may promote. Nevertheless the milestone is a milestone in the bigger picture. 326 with 12 to go. 'Ricky' is on for the penultimate one - not a bad shout and he gets a little worry before the rain does come down and we finish at 327 for 3 with 1.1 overs left which will not be bowled.
Day 2
Warwickshire seem to be trying all their seamers first thing on the second day as Somerset resume on 327. The initial bowling is tight and the initial batting cautious. The conditions are variable. Broken cloud and a significant amount of wind on the walk in this morning. Gusts of up to 35mph expected during the day with sunshine and overcast spells. Hannon-Dalby and Barnard are the initial attack the first from the City end and the second from the pavilion. Little seems to have changed after 5 as we move to 331 for 3. It could be a long day in the field for eleven players.....
Tom A delivers the first boundary of the day in the 6th over and another bonus point arrives before the 10th of the day. Abell moved on to 27 from 67 while Lammonby headed for 3 figures at 90 from 158. There is not a lot in this pitch for the bowling side and unless the Somerset bowling attack can make something more of this than the home side this is going to be a turgid second half of a game and an inevitable draw. It is never decided until both sides have batted but we may be hoping for a lot for the result to be anything more.
Tom Lammonby moves to 100 at 370 from 168 balls with 16 fours. His season is developing well and he looks to be back to his early 2020s red ball form which is good for the county as well has him. He goes to his highest first class score as he passes 116 at 388 surpassing his total in the Bob Willis Final in the 2020 Covid year. A reverse sweep from the centurion moves us to 399 and then another to the other side takes us over 400 in the 104th over. He produces a single to give Abell a chance. His partner takes it and hits another boundary before holing out next ball 2 short of his 50 at 407/4 (48 from 103 balls) caught by Yates off the spin of Rocchiccioli. In comes the next 'Tom' as Banton walks out... still needing some red balls runs which have been a bit sparse since the record changing innings. He won't have many better chances to get some under his belt.
The 105th over sees Simmons open his Day 2 account at 414 for 4. Lammonby hits him for consecutive fours to say 'Good Morning'. But he then goes at 133 (196 balls 20 fours) quite lamely hitting a 'nothing' shot off Bamber straight to Davies at mid on. 425 for 5 brings Archie Vaughan out and gives Warwickshire a sniff of something with two new men at the crease half an hour before lunch and no real individual scores to their names at the moment. Bethell gets a shot just before the break and they introduce Yates at the City end to double up the spin attack. But as the interval comes, the Somerset pair have moved the score to 446 with Banton on 20 from 36 and his younger partner on 8 from 21. As someone just said as they passed "God that dragged didn't it?" Can't argue but we are in the driving seat with this one presently.
We pass 450 after the break but also after the 110 over cut off so no more bonus points I'm afraid while Warks only get one bowling point. Bethell continues after lunch from the Pavilion with the perception being that Somerset will bat until they stop and see what happens then. Banton looks to push on but top edges one from the spinner in the 119th to go for 26 (from 49) - a disappointment to be honest at a time and on a pitch that was just made for him to score big - still in search of a significant red ball score since Worcestershire.
458 for 6 brings out the skipper Craig Overton. However, in something of a 'flurry' of afternoon wickets, Yates from the City end has Vaughan LBW 2 balls into the 120th to bring Pretorius into the fray at 258 for 7. Archies departs for 14 from 32. The 'collapse' continues as the South African edges one at the end of Yates' over to Latham at first slip departing for 1. 460 for 8 brings in Jack Leach to try and stop the 'rot'.
We have a bit of spirited defence before Jack becomes Bethell's second as he is caught by Latham in the slips for 11. 487 for 9 brings Matt Henry in as the last man. He runs a 3 to get off the mark and move the score to 490. They push the score to 498 before Henry is caught on the boundary for 7 from 11 while his boss ends not out with 21 from 47. A little bit of a whimper of an ending to a big scoring innings but we'd have taken that and we get to have a go at the home side's bats both sides of the Tea interval with just shy of 500 in the bank. It's now simple. If Warwickshire pass the follow one score of 348 this game is probably a draw.
Matt Henry starts the Somerset attack from the City end bowling to Yates and produces an over with two boundaries and 4 leg byes to start the home side off with 12 for 0! Josh Davey is the Kiwi's first bowling partner of the day as he starts from the Pavilion to Davies. His second ball spits off the surface and has the Warks man wafting with one hand at a ball that rears sharply. It falls safe over the slip cordon but that was a surprise. A good first only goes for one as the sun streams down on the middle at just gone 3pm. Matt is far more 'on the money' with his second as he produces a maiden.
The 10th over starts Migael's afternoon work at 31 for 0 with Yates taking the early front running role. He strikes immediately sending Yates on his way for 17 caught behind by Rew. In comes Latham to replace his teammate and he is nearly strangled down the legside with his first ball. A quickly run two gets him off the mark.
Craig Overton comes on for the 12th from the City as Warwickshire continue to look move beyond 50 However, they don't get there before the Tea interrval coming in at 48 for 1 after 15.
The 50 arrives in the 17th as Overton and Pretorius continue into the evening session. There are lots of overs yet to come as the scoreboard says we still have 35 to come tonight after this one - the 18th. With the 21st we introduce the spin of Jack Leach from the Pavilion end and we may see whether there is anything to save this game in the next hour or not!! Well he doesn't go for 13 off his first so that is a positive aspect.
81 for 1 as Jack goes for 10 off his first 4. Davies is doing the majority of the scoring with 35 and Latham has 18 in a partnership 2 short of a 50. That becomes a second wicket 50 partnership off the bowling of Pretorius (changing ends to the City) in the 29th at 83 for 1 from 119 balls. The change of seamer suggests that Leach is in for a long spell from the Pavilion and they will rotate the faster guys at the City.
Matt Henry returns to the attack replacing Miggy P for the 37th. Davies straight drives his 3rd delivery to bring up his 50 from 109 balls with 5 fours at 120 for 1.
The Warwickshire reply goes over 3 figures with just under 20 overs of the day to go. Latham has started to catch up with his partner though Davies is the first into the 40s. They end the 10th Pretorius over (the 35th of the innings) with a near chance which goes past just out of reach of second slip to the Pavilion boundary taking the score from 'Nelson' to 115 for 1. They will be pretty happy with this situation if they end the day with the loss of only 1 wicket.
Latham follows his partner to 52 from 96 balls at 134 along with the 101 run partnership which came from 182 balls. Jack hasn't had a lot from the conditions though he has been tight enough. After 10 overs he has figures of 0 for 33 which are fair but they don't scream 'MATCH WINNING'!! Unfortunately.
With 13 over to go to the halfway point of this game the prospects of any kind of result other than the draw is looking less and less likely. They take the spinner off with 10 overs to go and Craig comes on at the Pavilion to partner Henry as we move towards the close. They do try their other spin option as Archie gets a go for the first time from the City end with 7 left in the day. The home side 150 has to wait until the next over as the young bowler just goes for 1 to move the score to 149.
Craig has the honour of giving away the 150th run which he does as Latham moves to 61 in the 48th over. They are keeping it tight at both ends but the chances are not coming or not going to hand when they are. It's been a disappointing second half of the day for the visiting side one would imagine and Warwickshire must be looking at the needing less than 200 to save the follow on as the nearest they will get to a win in this game.
Jack Leach returns for 2 of the last 4 one would imagine from the Pavilion once again. It is once again a case of 'close but no cigar' as Davies can't get him away but he is not making any kind of mistake that would cost his wicket either. He will partner Vaughan until the close it seems with the objective of tying both ends down and making the Bear pair work until the very end of the day. Davies and Latham have worked very hard this afternoon and seem happy to accept the challenge. Archie's 3 have gone for a mere 5 runs.
The batting pair finish the Leach 12th (52nd of the innings) on 157. He finishes the day with 0 for 35. Archie bowls the 53rd and last of Day 2 to Davies who seems perfectly happy to see him out Latham will finish on 65 from 142 while Davies takes the single to move to 63 from 152 and Warwickshire stand at 158 for 1 trailing by 340 and 190 from saving the follow on.
Day 3
Tuesday is an even more overcast day. Some people last night were "Ooooeeer we could have a tense Day 4 if they set us a difficult target". They'll do well to do that on this. Those who did not make runs in our first innings were trying to push for the 450 point rather than being fooled by good deceptive bowling. Barnard was their best bowler, they didn't use him all that much but he didn't exactly making the ball talk. To get a difficult 4th day total for us to chase they need 600 plus on this and at 158 for 1, the other 450 at the same rate will take all of today and up to probably lunch tomorrow. It is highly unlikely unless this strip deteriorates massively and they bat heroically.
Migael opens from the Pavilion to start the ball rolling but it is Matt Henry at the other end who gets the first breakthrough when at 172 he has Latham caught behind without adding to his score in 24 minutes. This brings Hain to the wicket as the sun comes out for the first time this morning. Matt is fired up as he has the new man swinging and missing at his first delivery which goes away from him. it's 172 for 2 at the end of the 59th over of the innings with 92 overs left in the day. That was Matt's third maiden in a row as well, the last a wicket maiden.
It is slow work but effective as TKC dives in reaction to snatch a superb first slip catch sending Davies on his way at 178 off the change bowling of skipper Overton. The press all wake up because the next man in is Jacob Bethell - the reason the Times is here for example... though even the journalist has no real idea why :-) Davies went for 78 from 186 balls.
Pretorius changes to the City End for the 67th. At the end of it he has 1 for 52 and Somerset have held Warks to 26 runs for the loss of 2 wickets from 14 overs in the first hour of Day 3... No use of Josh Davey this morning by the way... there were questions about him turning his ankle yesterday while fielding. But if it has, why is he still fielding?
Jack Leach is into the Day 3 attack for the 70th from the Pavilion at 185 for 3, he's appealing for an edge off Bethell with his last ball but he didn't get it. It shows that they are frustrating the home side's batting when Han comes down the wicket to hit over the top in Jack's next over. It's doubtful he's at all worried because it shows the application is working. They are tied down trying to push on. Hain gets a smack on the helmet from Pretorius though he does put his head in the way rather then misjudging the trajectory. They do the check and we carry on and he remains to help his partner move the score past 200 which comes closer due to a slight misfield from Kasey who has come though it seems the substitution is not for Davey but for Lammonby.
Meanwhile Overton comes on as change at the City end and Hain rather luckily whips him away for a boundary to finally reach 202 for 3. They do start to push it a little more as we move towards lunch. The partnership has reached 36 from 84 balls at the end of Overton's 18th and the 77th of the innings. Bethell has 11 from 35 and Hain has 21 from 63. The Bears move to 214 for 3. The England middle order man puts the England spinner into the stand for six to show some more intent. At 80 overs Overton's second ball does something, Bethell seems to glove it and is caught behind for 20 from 43 and lunch comes at 229 for 4. There is no indication that this is the new ball and Bethell was not pleased but he is out - and the umpires have been docking 5 points for dissent in these games - there were two yesterday.
An interesting next session might be on the cards. Still something in this game for a while at least. Barnard joins Hain as Overton finishes the over he started before the interval from the City end. Then Pretorius takes the Pavilion end for the 82nd. The sun is out and it is probably quite warm out there this afternoon though the wind is still blowing across the top of the stands according to the flags on the stand to the left of the scoreboard. One wonders if that breeze is getting down to the the level of the field.
The score continues to stumble along slowly as Overton and Pretorius continue with their line and length and the run an over scoring rate!! At 235 Barnard fiddles at one and is another caught behind for an early afternoon session wicket for 4 runs. Craig takes his third (3 for 46 in his 23) and Smith replaces the Warks allrounder at the crease.
Henry is back at the City end for the 89th but the pressure does not really change though Warwickshire are moving towards their first batting bonus point as Smith flashes one through the third slip position to the Pavilion boundary to move his county to 249 at the end of the Kiwi's over. It comes with a Hain drive to the cover boundary in the 90th. 251 for 5 needing 97 runs to save the follow on with 5 wickets in hand.
Josh is finally used on Day 3 after this and he is getting it to shift around a bit and he has a number of appeals turned down for all kinds of things but he has caused more trouble in this limited spell than anyone else today. We then find out that the reason it is looking different is that Josh has just taken the new ball in the 94th over. In his second over of the spell (the 96th) Hain moves towards an individual 50 with a boundary to the scoreboard stand. He gets even closer with a four to the other side from the next ball, moving him to 48 from 123. He completes the job from the last ball of Matt Henry's next from 130 balls with 7 fours at 275 for 5. Warwickshire need 73 to avoid being asked to follow on.
Jack returns at the Pavilion for the 100th with a new ball 6 overs old. It's 279 for 5 and the 50 partnership arrives from 100 balls at 285 for 5 during Henry's next one. There are 50 overs left in the day at the end of the 101st and Warwickshire need 63 to probably move this game comepletely into the 'draw' catergory. Debate around the place suggests that James Rew dropped Smith on 15 in the 99th off Henry. It looked like it did not carry and it would have been a decent catch had he kept hold but the slow motion does suggest it carried and went in before coming out.
The 300 arrives as Hain charges Leach and then Overton takes over at the City end as Warwickshire move the score needed to avoid the follow on down to 48. Smith snicks the 3rd ball of the 105th through to the Somerset keeper (his 5th catch) and at 301 for 6 this game keeps shifting about after periods in the doldrums. In comes Ricchiccioli for his first spell with a bat at Edgbaston. Personally the hope is it won't be a long stay.
However it is Hain who announces Tea when he gives Overton his 4th wicket (4 for 61) by sending the ball straight to Leach at 317 for 78 from 170. The interval comes with 31 still needed to avoid batting again...
The new man is Bamber (finally after they announced him as the first man in this morning). He and 'Rocky' look to get the home side over the hurdle of 348 to take away the knotty follow on question of "should they shouldn't they". Miggy P' takes the first from the City and Jack continues from the Pavilion. After these two there are another 39 to bowl tonight so we will still be here after 6:30 again this evening.
It's 328 as the 39th starts. They have 3 wickets left to get to something over 348. As we pass the 110 over mark, we fail to gain the third bowling bonus point for the first time this season so we've missed one of each in this game.
'Rocky' is solving the follow on question with 28 (5 fours and 1 six) from 31 before Pretorius has him caught by Lammonby at 339 for 8. In comes Simmons to join Bamber on 4. Pretorius ends his 26th over with a creditable 2 for 85. There have been chances missed today and Somerset were much sharper in the morning than the after lunch session but it must be a really hard job maintaining focus when there are long periods of grinding 'nothing' between the bits when something happens. No excuse however, the job is to maintain the concentration all the time if possible.
Finally a Bamber sweep puts the score on 349 and although they trail by 149 runs, they will not be following on when this innings ends. Somerset will bat again to put a total together they might ask Warwickshire to have a go at tomorrow... though I doubt that will happen by decision, we'd probably have to be bowled out for that to the be the last scene of this game. The 350 arrives soon after the 349 from a top edge down past the keeper.
We turn to Vaugahn spin from the City end for the 121st over. He bowled 4 overs yesterday afternoon for 6 runs and has not been used again since. Simmons is bowled for 1 (from 22) prodding forward at 351 for 9. Ollie Hannon-Dalby is the last man striding to the crease. He's nobody's rabbit and it is surprising he came in after Simmons though they were probably betting on the long handle from the fast bowler to get them over the line at the time. Wasn't needed but it still leaves a job to do for the Somerset bowling attack.
Jack stays on at the other end with 1 for 103 from his 29. Some are asking why Archie wasn't used earlier in this innings? But Jack answers those questions by trapping Bamber LBW with the first of his 30th over.
Warwickshire are all out for 351, 147 behind with 27 overs to be bowled tonight.
TKC and Josh walk out to face Bamber first, a boundary, a couple of singles, one straight through Davey and 7 off the over. Then Hannon-Dalby takes the second from the City end. TKC dismisses him through the covers and he givesw away 4 leg byes to take us to 15 after 2.
In the 5th at 24 and with TKC on 12 from 16 balls, he smacks Bamber into the hands of Barnard. It sounded like a bottom edge from here as returns to the dressing room and Tom Lammonby comes out for a longish evening session one would hope. But not for Josh unfortunately as he is dimissed with 26 on the board by Hannon-Dalby for 10 from 27. Just didn't hit a straight one it seems!! We now have James Rew joining TL with both yet to score!
With 15 to go in the day we have 38 for 2 with Lammonby becalmed on 3 from 10 and Rew making the moves with 9 from 19. Bamber is once again being frugal with the runs and our lead is 185. Barnard replaces Hannon-Dalby at the City for the 16th with 43 on the board and the lead moving into the 190s. The 50 arrives from the new man at the Pavilion end - Jacob Bethell in the 17th from the bat of James Rew with a slog swept four to the boundary. It moves Somerset to 53 and the lead to 200 and the keeper goes to 15 from 32.
When it gets down to the last 10 he has moved the score on to 58 and his own score on by 5. His partner has only moved on to 9 however and it is still slow going. A missed 4 leg byes makes things a little better with 9 to go as the score moves to 68 for 2. Rew is definitely the one looking to move this one sweeping and slog sweeping both sides to Bethell and moving the partnership towards the 50 mark and his own score on to 29 from 40. Lammonby does finally find the boundary to take the pair past the 50 partnership to 52 from 67 balls at 78 for 2. The lead reaches 225. He then guides one to the leg side boundary to end the 19th at 82 for 2.
The Somerset pair seem to be targetting Bethell who has gone for 24 from 2. It continues with a four from the first delivery of his third over. They move the score to 99 by the end of what is the 21st over of the innings. This brings 'Rocky' on at the City end and Lammonby guides the ball to the Pavilion boundary to bring up 3 figures to 103 for 2. That also brings up a 250 lead.
With 5 to go it is 104 for 2 with Rew on 40 from 50 and Lammonby on 31 from 40 (catching him up). Yates replaces Bethell at the Pavilion for the last throw of the Day 3 dice one would expect. Can't go at 10 an over and stay on to be honest, the margins are still a little too tight for that. The lights are on at 6:40... we should finish but you can never be sure with the Umpires light meters. It won't matter for Lammonby as he is dismissed by 'Rocky' for 33 at 107 for 3 caught by Barnard. In comes Tom Abell - no point in putting Jack in tonight as we'll need speed tomorrow. 3 left and 113 on the board 260 for 3 effectively.
We are down to the last over with 115 for 3 on the board. Rew has 44 from 59 and TA has 5 from 9. Yates bowls the last and the batting pair look to play it out. They do exactly that and go into the last day with a lead of 263 at 116 for 3. Rew has moved on to 45 from 63 and we come back tomorrow with at least enough to ponder about how this may pan out by lunchtime.
Day 4
The initial plan seems to be "...get some runs and then give them 80 overs to get them". As reported last night, we'll see how that pans out either side of lunchtime today. The conditions this morning haven't changed much. there seemed to be little or no deterioration in the surface. Last night though Archie did look a little more significant with the ball than his use in this game has suggested. He does bowl a tight line and had Simmons all ends up very soon after starting his small session. But it is very clear that the young man sees himself as a bat first and a bowler a definite second.
We start on time and it looks like Warwickshire will be starting with spin as 'Rocky' seems to be warming up at the City end to bowl to Rew at 116 for 3 and 5 from a 50. This is the 28th over of the innings and we have a possible 95 after this one in the day. The Aussie is all high stepping and wavey arms as he comes in. He's also a headband wearer!! Rew goes to a 66 ball 50 with 7 fours in it at 122 for 3. Hannon-Dalby will start from the Pavilion end. He produces a tight 2 run 6 balls as an opener.
The first breakthrough comes to the Aussie in the 32nd when Rew goes for 61 from 81 at 136 for 4. The spinner gets a bit of movement and James feathers it to Smith. Out comes Tom Banton and he might have orders to get somewhere in the next 10 overs as we now lead by 283. He doesn't stay long as 'Rocky' has him attempting to sweep but it's more of a swipe across the line. He leaves the fight for 2 at 140 for 5 LBW to Rocchiccioli. In comes Archie Vaughan with the lead still under 300. Probably NOT where Somerset wanted to be.
Tom brings up the 150 for the county with a single for the 5th ball of the 38th. It's all a bit slow but it moves forward. The lead is now 297 with 5 overs until the "80 over" supposed declaration. Not sure myself as Simmons replaces Hannon-Dalby at the Pavilion. The lead passes 300 during the over.
As we reach 80 overs the questions are, do we take the 8 points for the draw and the extra bonus stuff we have that will take us above Warwickshire? or do we look at a way to win this one after losing 2 wickets early on Day 4? We'll probably play it safe and just bat out the draw now rather than set a fighting declaration and back our bowlers to do a job for us. At 170 for 5 with a lead of 317 we may not have enough to do the latter. We continue to bat after the 80 overs have been breached.
At 12:05 an unrequested drink arrive for the bats - a possible message of what may happen before lunch Straight after the resumption, Archie breeches the cover boundary - on both sides in the next 2 balls. At 188 for 5 in the 45th things have certainly moved up a notch and there is probably a plan to have a go at them before the lunch break. The lead has moved to 335. 'Rocky' continues from the City attempting to keep the Somerset pair 'honest' . Archie is becoming more 'expansive' as he moves to 31 from 42 chasing Abell (34 from 56) towards the individual 50 and moving Somerset to 4 runs from 200 in this innings and a 350 plus lead before the half hour. In response, the Bears bring Bamber into the attack replacing Simmons.
A six from Archie takes Somerset over 200 to 205 and the lead to 352. 'Rocky' then bowls Abell and in comes Pretorius to 'finish it off'?. We go below 75 overs and Migael isn't in for long as Bamber bowls him for 5 at 210 for 7. Out comes captain Craig - not sure why now if they expect to come in again but I supose he's in the middle so he can decide himself can't he? 12:30 is past and we are still batting. 212 for 7 wth 74 to go and 'Rocky' still bowling with everyone on the boundary offering the singles.
Somerset keep taking them. 216 for 7 as Bamber comes in for another. It does not look like they expect to have a go at them either side of the lunch break and are either happy to have a go over 2 sessions or will simply bat out and let it all lie where it falls. Lunch is probably too close now to do anything but close the innings before it should they declare.
We reach the 70 overs left position as Bamber completes his 12th. The lead is 376. 'Rocky' gets his 5-fer at 229 for 8 as he has the Somerset skipper LBW. Craig calls Archie to come with him. Warwickshire need 377 in 69 overs.
Matt Henry from the City end starts the last phase of this game after lunch. Warwickshire need about 5 and a half an over to get anywhere near this - more than anyone has managed in the last 3 and a half days. Davies and Yates have to be optimisitic but they may get behind in this one quickly. It starts off well as Matt gets Davies LBW after Yates takes a single. The Bears are 1 for 1. That is how the first over ends with Latham in early. 375 off 68 - the run rate per over goes up as Jack takes the new ball at the Pavilion end. He nearly has Latham but the ball jagged back an long way with the bat not playing a shot. He then tries to sweep the bowler only to hit it straight into the close fielders shin pads. At 2 for 1 it's all going on at the moment.
After asking a number of questions of the bats from his end, Jack finally dismisses Yates (though there is a question about whether he got a feather) caught behind at 16 for 2. Warwickshire trail by 260 with 8 wickets in hand and Hain at the crease with a partner (though different scorecards disagree about who it is). It is Latham.
Presently Jack has bowled 3 and half exceptional overs for 2 runs and a wicket. He goes for a swept four but still finishes his 4th at 1 for 6. Meanwhile at the other end Matt has bowled 4 for 16 with a wicket as well and they are both asking more questions at the start of this innings than at the beginning of any of the three before this one. It keeps the game 'lively' :-)
Craig takes the 11th from the City end at 30 for 2. Neither Hain or Latham seem at all keen to push this 'chase' towards 'victory' despite a suggestion on the West Midlands local radio that our bowling is scared of the strong Warwickshire batting line-up!!! Not the impression we've got so far.
The score moves slowly past 50 and as we move towards 50 overs left we introduce Archie into the attack at the City end moving to a twin spin offensive as Jack stays active at the other end. With a minumum of 50 overs left in the day, Warwickshire have reached 71 for 2 and are still 305 adrift of the winning point. Hain has moved on to 26 from 46 and Latham has 29 from 45. Jack has bowled 9 with 1 for 35 and Archie has presently gone for 9 from his 3.
5 overs later the home side have added 9!! The 'chase' is not exactly ON!! They have dropped the ask below 300 but only by 4 and they are a LONG way from getting anywhere near clearing that total. Looking at this game now one has to say only the silly money would be on anything but a nailed on draw.
In the 25th Somerset bring on their secret weapon - Tom Lammonby from the Pavilion end with 86 on the board. His left arm variety does not seem to break the deadlock however though it is early days and he does only go for 2 from his first. Jack changes ends to the City nothing really changes. Warwickshire move to 88 for 2 and there are 40 overs left in the day. They still need 288 which means the run rate required is now over 7 per over and rising. Migael replaces Tom L after his 3 for 8 to deliver the 32nd but he is bowling the 34th before the home side move past 3 figures to 100 for 2 courtesy of a no ball!! That is all we get for the second session of the day and at Tea the lead is still 276 and all we are now waiting for is the time when hands can be shaken!!
So we enter the last phase of the game. Latham is 3 from a 50, Hain is a little further back. 271 is a long way away and 4:45pm is a hell of a lot closer. Pretorius is continuing from the Pavilion and this whole enterprise is stumbling towards the inevitable conclusion. Latham reaches his 93 ball 50 first at 107 for 2. Meanwhile to keep people awake Latham hits a straightforward catch back to bowler Overton who has just come on from the City end. At 114 for 3 out comes Jacob Bethell. Latham went for 65 from 158 balls with 8 fours. Warwickshire need 261 from the remaining 30 overs (8.7 an over) and Craig has 1 for 6 from 3.
At 125 for 3 after a maiden from Migael the minimum number of overs left is 25 and the lead is 251 - 10 an over from here on in people!! Hain needs 2 for his own 50 - which seems a long time coming (presently 121 balls). Craig is presently in his 6th over and has only gone for 10. The lead falls below 250 at 127 for 3 wih 24 overs to go. Hain is still waiting to pass 50 2 overs later but Bethell won't see it as he is caught by Abell off Pretorius in the 46th at 131. Hain finally gets there with a boundary from his 131st ball at 135 for 4 with his new partner Barnard at the other end.
5pm arrives as the 48th over is completed. There are 238 runs needed for the home win and a minimum of 21 overs to get them in. It is the same as we enter the last 20 overs of Day 4 wondering whether we've lost the will to live or whether this game will ever end. A hook by Barnard takes the score to 147 and another takes Warks past 150 to 151 for 4.
At the end of the 50th over of the innings the lead is still 225 with 19 left and Matt Henry returning from the City end. The number of overs goes below 15 and the score has only moved to 158 for 4. The lead is still over 200 because the bowling has been tight all afternoon and the pitch is offering nothing. Finally hands are shaken after 56 overs at 161 for 4. Hain ends on 68 and Barnard has 11. Somerset take 14 points and Warwickshire have 11 so we move ahead of them in the table.
The conditions on the first day suggested a draw a long way out. Had we not lost focus around the 450 point we may have accumulated 600 plus. Had that happened we may have had time to enforce a follow on and more time bowling at the home side.
However, it may have made no difference at all. The pitch did not allow quick scoring and there was little if anything for the spinners while the ball did too little at pace to be a real problem.
A draw is what it is and probably always was and we move on to Notts at Taunton on Sunday.

Somerset travel to Warwickshire who, with one fewer win and one fewer loss, sit just one place and one point above Somerset, who are fifth in the table.
Will the confidence of a good first half of the Blast be carried forward into the Championship? Warwickshire have had mixed results, and sit exactly mid table in the Northern division with three wins and four losses (with their local derby against the Pears tonight).
England are releasing their golden child Jacob Bethell to play what will be his first first-class match of the season after playing in the IPL (and missing the Zimbabwe test). Bethell hasfamously been fast-tracked into the England fold having never scored a century in professional cricket in any format. Knowing the perchance for cricketers of every county to notch up milestones when playing Somerset, I'm tempted to find out the odds of him making a ton next week.
Another Warwickshire player who to the county from IPL duty is at the other end of his England career - Moeen Ali. Now filling the role of player-coach at Edgbaston, he probably won't start in the Championship match. He has said his aim is to play and get the Bears to T20 Finals day in his final season before retiring.
Warwickshire's first overseas player is opening bat Tom Latham, who arrived early May and is with them for the remainder of the season. In his three championship matches before the break for the Blast he has 268 runs at an average of 53.6, wit one duck, one fifty and one hundred, with a highest score of 184.He has had a hood Blast, with 236 runs at an average of nearly 34, with two 50s. Warwickshire is his fourth county but he has played against Somerset just once - in 2023 for Surrey at Taunton when he made 99. The bowler who dismissed him? Shoaib Bashir.
Their second overseas player is Western Australian offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli (good luck on the comms there Mr Gibson). The 27 year old has played 36 first-class matches, taking 119 wickets at a tad under 30. He has no first team international experience, so unless there is some UK ancestry he must be here on a 28 day visa by dint of his domestic T20 performances (although if he is his 5 appearances spread over two BBL seasons for two teams in 2023 makes a mockery of this new visa system, brought in to allow recruitment of the "best of the best" overseas players for the 100).
Warwickshire have said their reason for choosing Rocchicciolo is his experience with the Kookaburra ball. Did I mention that? Yes, the next four championship games feature the Kookaburra. Will Somerset pick their own Kookaburra expert? I'd love to see Riley Meredith in Somerset whites. We'll have to wait and see.

For the ECB have ordered, in their total lack of wisdom, to experiment until the end of July with the Australian Kookaburra ball (famous for being spinner-friendly) , before returning to the Dukes for the remaining matches.
This of course opens the door for short-term singings. Rocchiccioli is the second leading wicket-taker in Australian domestic cricket for the last two years (87 wickets at 27.65). But can you imagine an Aussie off-spinner with no international experience, being signed as a full-term overseas player?
Squad: Davey, Kohler-Cadmore, Lammonby, Abell, Banton, James Rew, Vaughan, Hill, Aldridge, Overton (c), Pretorius, Henry and Leach.
Slightly surprised that TK-C is in ahead of Sean Dickson, but we likely won’t die waiting to see whether he succeeds !

Unfortunately it affects others.
Not sure what the solution is but the problem is not going away just because some people think it's 'nonsense'.
'Batter' was used in the 1740s, 'maiden' is still being used (why no issue there?), 'Bowler" has never been a problem.
It may take time but it's already changing. It'll just be 'nonsense' to some longer than others and gradually it'll adapt like it or not as language does when culture adapts.
Thank goodness "Chairman" still exists if only in the private sector.
Odd that the woke brigade haven't banned the word maiden.
Gratified at least that Messrs Marks, Gibson etc. can still happily describe delicate tickles to third man.

The weird thing is all this seems to be the obsession with not allowing most of the old 'male related' phrases to be used in male games... that never really made any sense to me personally.
Doubt the Guardian would panic or even bother to translate something so rare dilly and 'Chair' has been common in many places including the private sector for a decade or more. It cuts the printing costs as shorter words are more 'efficient' in the cut throat free market

Few counties have bored me so much down the years as Warwickshire despite the brilliant overseas players they had in the 70s and I also liked watching Dennis Amiss. I’ve only watched five days there but none were entertaining and Lara failed as he always did when I was there. Their county championship win in the early 2000s must have been the most boring in history with only five wins and lots of high scoring draws.
A reminder that ‘creative’ batting orders are nothing new at SCC !

Presently. at the start of Day 3 the daily musings are over 4000 words but as I'm not working on the mobile I'm not sure what that means to those following on the little machines.

Somerset's best and probably only chance of winning I think is to bat again with the pedal to the metal and set Warwickshire a decent but not impossible target, hope they bite and hope the day 4 pitch starts to misbehave.

I’d aim to set around 350 in 75… I think Warks unlikely to really chase whatever we set.
The 8 points for the draw and the bonus points we have that will take us above Warks may stop us making a fight of this one. But there is still the 30 mins before lunch option as a 'drink' is brought out to the bats.

We'll see I suppose but 377 in 69 is a run rate higher than any in this game so far b y quite a margin so something has to go very wrong if this game is not a draw. We have to hope the 'very wrong' is a bowler getting amongst them!!
Maybe we got 25 or so more than we really needed, and used up 5-10 more overs more than many of us would’ve liked, but it hardly warrants the BBC Radio WM correspondent saying Somerset had been negative this morning, saying we feared the “firepower of the Warwickshire batting” and wondering if we were spooked by last year’s game when SOMERSET chased over 400 led by Tom Abell (a SOMERSET player last time I looked) at TAUNTON!
20 minutes earlier, the report from the ground said Warks had six fielders on the boundary and Davies waited until Bamber was “all the way on the far boundary edge before suddenly requesting him to come on and bowl, he looks as suprised as anyone! More field changes ensue and the poor over rate this morning continues.” At that point there’d been 19 overs in one hour and 22 minutes, mostly by spinners!
Yet it was Somerset’s tactics that were negative! Do you think he’d ever watched Warwickshire or any cricket before?
We've had control of this game for most of it. I doubt our bowling line-up is worried about the Warks batting. We probably mucked this up when we lost our focus chasing the bonus points. We might have been able to bat once and put them in twice. But t wasn't to be. The game is presently at least still alive - for how long? Who knows.
But if anyone wins it, it'll be us. The Warks batting is having none of chasing this total down at the moment.
If Jack bowls a lot, we could get in more than 69 overs..,
Can see now it would have likely made no difference to the result. The only winners from division 1 this week are Surrey, and the Kookaburra ball.

The Kookaburra served up a bunch of pretty dull draws. Warks vs Som was always likely to end in a draw, though if Somerset hadn't collapsed (in the loosest sense of the word given they scored 498!) in the first innings, there would have been a greater chance of a win.
I would advocate fifteen points for a win and five for a draw: the same 3:1 ratio as in football. What is the ratio in rugby?

I'm a Bath lad, played the 'Soft Southern' code at school and support Bath, but I lived in Sydney for a year and fell in love with rugby league (Go Tigers!), where the game is huge.
The last three games I've been to were Exeter vs Bath in the Premiership Cup final, Bristol vs Bath in Cardiff and Warrington vs Hull KR in the Rugby League Challenge cup final at Wembley (£37.50 for a very good seat - 20% off in the January sale!). Bath home tickets are horrifically expensive, 60-odd quid to stand in the uncovered end...
I've got good tickets for the Ashes Rugby League game in Wembley later in the year for a similar price.
