Well we get a start on the reserve day with reaslly cloudy skies still suggesting we'll be damn lucky to get a full 20 ocver game in. But it they are game so are we!!
Metrobank Final v Glamorgan @Trent Bridge Monday 23 September 2024
Can't believe this is happening and the start of this wll be rushed as we are already in the 5th over. The side is Umeed, Thomas G, Goldsworthy, Rew, Vaughan, Dickson, Green, Aldridge, Davey, Ogborne, Leach
We won the toss and are bowling is very damp conditions and Alfie has taken full advantage of that by bowling Karlson for 1 at 8 in the second and then having bevan caught by Leach without scoring the next ball. That start has meant that Glamorgan have had to reset but Smale has been aggressive and now has 28 to his name in the 6th Green has had an over but Kasey Aldridge has just dismissed Smale courtesy of a great diving catch from the captain. That 28 off 14 balls was dangerous and he needed getting rid of. 47 for 3 in the 6th and I'm up to date.
In comes Colin Ingram - the ex colleague and bane of Somerset games since his move to the Welsh!! He is in with Sam Northeast and they bring up the 50 in the 7th over and the floodlights are on. To keep this game going we need no rain for the first innings and then we'll see. Green is bowling.
George Thomas comes on from the Pavilion end for the 8th at 65 for 3 and his first is a wide. But Ingram bottom edges to Green and goes for 11 off George's 3rd. In comes Billy Root. A good first over sees George 1 for 1 and Glamorgan 65 for 4 as Josh comes in from the Radcliffe Road end having changed ends.
At 10 overs the Welsh are 71 for 4 and we continue with Thomas. Not sure we'll see spin today it is very very damp out there. Northeast looks to push on taking 12 from the over with two boundaries and it is 83 for 4 with 9 to go. Alfie is back on at the Radcliffe to mix it up. he presently has 18 for 2 from his last 2. He holds Northeast looking to push on and goes for 5. George is replaced by Kasey for the 13th as Root looks to push on with his partner with a six into the Trent Bridge Inn corner... it got there but it was a bity of a gamble. But they probably feel that they have to at the moment.
The 100 arrives at the end of the 13th ewith Northeast 25 from 29 and Root 25 from 17. Thomas changes ends for the 14th. He holds them to less than 6 an over and that is good in the back end of a T20 Glamorgan move to 105 with 36 balls left.
Kasey will bowl out with the 15th and Root takes his first for six. He goes at him in this one and there is a flurry of boundaries to move the batting side on to 128 and he goes for 29 to end at 134. He ends with 56 for 1 after staring that one on 27 for 1. Green takes the reins at the Radcliffe to take us into the last 5.
The 50 came up at 116 and the Root/Northeast partnership is keeping this game alive as Northeast goes to an excellent 50 from 39 balls with4 fours and 6 sixes. No spin used yet and that continues as Thomas looks to bowl out at the Pavilion end at 141 for 4.. Root flashes at his 4th, a slower ball and he edges it to Rew. 143 for 5 and Thomas has 2. In comes Douthwaite. The 17th takes them close to 150 as Douthwaite gets off the mark with a single. Glamorgan are still 5 short with 3 overs to go. A good spell of 23 for 2 for George.
Douthwaite is out to a no ball on height from Ogborne but Douthwaite is dithering and they run him out before he reclaims his ground. He just stood there looking at the umpire oin the middle of the pitch while the fielders threw down the stumps at the bowlers end. 145 for 5 and it seems to have flustered Northeast as he skies the free hit. The next brings up the 150 as his next is a wide and they are pushing the close time very close. They nearly run out Northeast, a direct hit would have got him and it was close. Alfie is jogging back to his mark and the last ball is a flashed 4 so with 12 balls to go it is 158 for 6. Ogborne finishes with 36 for 2 - some good stuff some wayward stuff but there is someting there in the young bowler.
2 to go with Ben taking the penultimate one. He get another T20 'filth' wicket as Kellaway slaps him to Ogborne at 158 for 7. In comes van der Gugten and he gets off the mark with a straight single. He then gets mobving as bit with his partner and a couple of boundaries mean that Green ends with a credible 1 for 26. 169 for 7 with 1 Josh Davey over to go.
2 singles from the first 2 and the Glamorgan press are wondering why we are picking Jack Leach for his batting. van der Gugten gets a big outside edge and then finds the boundary with an excellent shot to go to 19 from 7 and take Glamorgan just short of 179 with 2 to go. He hits the 5th for six into the Radcliffe Road and the last one is a single to finish the innings with 186 for 7 with Northeast on 63 from 49 and van der Gugten finishes with 26 from 9. Davey bowled 4 for 43.
187 for silverware!!
The Reply
It's a 15 minute turnaround to try and beat the weather. Thomas and Umeed walk out facing an above par score according to the experts in the press box. van der Gugten is straight back into it bowling the first over from the pavilion to Thomas. A feisty first over and 3 on the board. Now which Andy Umeed will turn up today as McIlroy takes the second? Another decent 6 balls and we have doubled our score to 6.
There's a question of LBW on Thomas swith the first ball of the third It hits his back leg but it's umpires call and he was not given out so.... we go on. George was wandering off as the decision came up - but of course he has not been in an umpire review situation before. As usual the next ball squirts for the first boundary and then Thomas opens up and sends one to the Pavilion. Then they take a stupid single to Northeast. Umeed sends him back and he's stranded halfway down 14 for 1 and Thomas out for 13. It was his call but it was a suicidal run. In comes Goldsworthy. 19 for 1 after 3
The Powerplay is over and we are 20 runs behind their score at the same time but there are 16 overs to come as van der Gugten continues with his third. 23 for 1 as Douthwaite comes on for the fifth at the Radcliffe Road. It is not easy for the Somerset batsmen out there and you just have to hope they will weather the storm and then start to take control. This is going to be a hard fought win if it ever comes that is for sure.
6 overs have gone and Somerset have stumbled to 28 for 1 with Umeed on 8 from 12 and Goldsworthy with 6 from 9. It doesn't look all that impressive but while they are in the game is still alive as Kellaway makes it a double change at the Pavilion.
119 needed after 10 though Lewis will have to leave it to someone else after he fires a Kellaway ball into McIlroy's hands at the end of the 9th with the score on 63. He goes for 11 from 13 and out comes James Rew with another innings required of him. If these two can stay together this game is not over as Douthwaite delivers the 12th and we move to 85 losing Umeed to a thin under edge well caught behind by Smale for 45 off 46 balls. In comes Archie with another big ask in front of him.
Kellaway gets James to top edge an attempted sweep and Smale gets another one 89 for 4. Glamorgan have used their slow man - we didn't. Is that the difference? The skipper Sean Dickson strides out needing to find 98 runs. They review the last ball of the 13th against Dickson but it is not out on another umpires call.
Kellaway provides a decent 2 for 37 from his four as Gorvin takes his third from the Radcliffe Road. There isn't a lot flowing from the bat unfortunately and we still need 98 off the first 2. Then Vaughan puts one into the stand to get off the mark with a six and he then takes another one to the Radcliffe to bring up the 100. They nearly get Dickson but a weel judged dive gets him in with a direct hit putting Somerset hearts in their mouths. after 14 it is 103 for 4 and the need 84 as van der Gugten returns.
This is the over that Kasey went for 29 in during their innings and Dickson tries to remind them of this with a huge six square off the first ball to suprisingly get himself off the mark!! He cuts just over the fielder for a four and then sixes into the pavilion 120 for 4 with 5 to go... we need 67.
McIlroy takes the next and Dicko continues with another six (23 from 10). In Archie he has someone keen to run the ball so there is a fight on. Dickson ramps and then takes a bottom edge four. 136 for 4 means 51 from 4 and this is on.
This is a good contest as Douthwaite changes ends and Vaughan guides the ball to the boundary. They then take singles until the end of the over and another cut four just over a fielder. The last ball from Douthwaite's third is a single taking Somerset to 149 and keeping Dickson on strike with 3 to go and 38 needed.
Gorvin takes the 18th and we go to 150 from the first. The second is also a single and we need a big over before the last 12. Dickson knows this and he flashes the third to the boundary behind the stumps. He tries to find a gap behind with a scoop but he puts the ball straight into Ingram's hands at short third man. So he goes after giving his side a taste with 44 but goes at 156 for 5. In comes Ben Green. He top edges, the catch is dropped, both Somerset men are at the same end and Glamorgan's Billy Root throws and misses the stumps. 158 for 5.
We need 29 from 2 with McIlroy. The first is a single and so is the second. Archie misses the third slower ball and they run two off the fourth. Vaughan tries to ramp another slower ball and fails and the last is a scrambled 2. They are reviewing a run out but he was in and we need 232 off the last over... it's not going to happen I'm afraid as Douthwaite takes it and Douthwaite bowls it.
The first is an appeal to a ball Green missed. Another umpire's call. Unfortunately the next one is straight up and easily caught and Green goes 164 for 6 means we fought hard but came up second again unfortunately, In comes Kasey Aldridge on a hiding for nothing needing 23 from 4. He hits a single and it's done. Archie takes 2. 20 off 2. Too much. He misses the first 20 off 1. He hits a 4 opff the last and we lose by 15 runs.... Kasey Kasey Kasey :-(
The good thing is that there was a game and it was a good one. We lost but we held them far better than our mighty T20 side did and with a little more luck and possibly a little more experience that would have been even closer.
Well played Sean Dickson and his men from Taunton. You did us proud this year so thank you very much indeed. The future is bright, the future is Somerset.

How many overs have to be bowled to constitute a result when we bat ? We’ll most definitely have to make sure we are ahead of DLS at all times !

Kasey has plenty of attributes, but lacks control and accuracy, which in reality cost is the game.
We have done superbly overall this season, but once again fallen badly at the final hurdle (x3).
Which is all too familiar.

I couldn't stay to watch any of it and wished it hadn't been played. If the weather forecast had been accurate we'd have shared the trophy!
And getting back to Bath this evening was tricky on the trains, with multiple cancellations and trains too full to take on more passengers.

Couldn't have been more than 150 spectators in the ground.
I had internet problems on my journey to Nottingham and, to add to a theme, thanks to late running trains I only got to the ground just as the Glamorgan innings was finishing, an innings which thanks to the aforementioned internet problems, I did not realise had started.
But we have a really good and enthusiastic young team and yesterday's match certainly will not define their careers.

An excellent summerisation.
It is a defeat that leaves a bitter taste due to the circumstances but the ODC team have been an absolute joy to watch throughout the competition and they have been a credit to the club, to themselves and to the supporters.
ESPN Cricinfo, after ignoring most of the Blast and all of the Metrobank have now decided to feature our failure to gain a title. What a waste of a once important place for extra domestic info. It's now cricket Disneyland obsessed with internationals & franchise stuff. The site that announced that the champions of T20 in the UK was "Oval Hulahoops"
