The Metrobank starts as the 'names' go off to their August jobs and we have the anticipation of an unknown side under an unfamiliar coach and we are hoping for more this year.in Paul Tweddle with an unfamilair skipper in Sean Dickson. However the side suggest more steel this year as there are only two first tem debutants in Archie Vaughan and JOe Heywood with the rest having tasted the top level in one way or the other. So how will they fare this year? They held up the table in 2022, were three points above that in 2023

The first side of the 50 over is interesting;
Umeed, Thomas G, Goldsworthy, Vaughan, Dickson, Rew J, Thomas J, Aldridge, Leach, Ogborne, Leonard
Welcome back to Lewis, no sign of Josh Davey who is getting over the summer 'illness' thatr has been affecting players all summer. Riley Meredith will not be available until after the Third Test if at all but he is named in the squad. Archie Vaughan debuts today while the other debutant will have to wait as Joe Heywood is 12th man. Kent won the tossand have chosen to bat first.
Before the start there is a Guard of Honour for Ken Palmer who passed away very recently. A tru servant of the game and the county and with 800+ wickets at 21 he certainly was a player of great significance to Somerset. After that Harry Everett send the Vertu car to the middle with the match ball and a failry decent crowd settles down to enjoy the first one day game after decent queues at all the gates have been processed through for the 2pm start.
Ned Leonard opens from the River end against Swanepoel and Evison and although he only gores for 4 they are mostly extras as he is a little wide of the length and line he wants. Alfie Ogborne is his new ball partner from the MT. He is moving the ball form the first and looks good as he goes for 4 as well. Ned is still loose but again only for 4 and we have to wait for the first chance to come in the 6th when Vaughan gets a diving hand to an Evison drive. It would have been a world class catch had he got to it. At 31 at the end of the 7th we have given away 8 extras so we need to tightenbut the breakthrough comes from Alfie who fools himself and probably Swanepoel with a out of the hand full toss which the Kent man top edges so high that the bowler is able to walk down and take the catch in front of the bat at 31.
In comes Singh, also on debut and Ogborne finishes a wicket maiden. This is followed by a change at the River end as Kasey Aldridge starts his work, partly to let Leonard change ends. At the end of the first 10 the score is 450 for 1.
The spin of Leach is introduced with the 11th, Jack's second 50 over game for Somerset since 2015. The 50 comes from the first ball of the next over and then the first six into the Somerset Stand from the Kent debutant. He takes 15 off the Kasey over but Jack is straight through him with the first ball of the 13th and it is 65 for 2 which introduces Leaning to the fray.
Lewis is introduced for the 17th and Kent have reached 97 by the end of the 20th. They pass 100 with the third ball of the 21st just after Evison has passed his personal 50 from 60 balls with 4 fours and 1 six. However Goldsworthy bowls Leaning as he drags it on at 102 and Finch comes out only to see Goldsworthy get another as Evison lobs one to Umeed at 107 bringing out Jaydn Denley to the crease.
Archie Vaughan starts his bowling afternoon from the MTand he keeps it tight and down to 2 runs from his first, The slow men are keeping them in check and it has limped to 112 for 4 at the halfway point of 25 overs.
At the start of the second half, Archie keeps the press on going for only 2 an over in his first 5 and it has only moved to 128 for 4 off 30. The frustration shows as LG gets his third as Finch misses a cut at 128. He then gets a fourth at 137 with Denly being caught by Kasey trying to push it along. Stobo arrivesd and brings the 150 up at the 356 over mark as Goldsworthy finishes an excellent spell of 10 with 43 for 4 - a career best for the young man in his return fixture.
Josh Thomas is introduced with more slow stuff for the 36th keeping the score to 151. This allows Jack to chance ends and the tussle results in 177 for 6 with 10 overs to go. Alfie comes back for the 41st and decieves Stobo who top sedges one to Aldridge at 187 for 19. In comes Qadri to face Leach who returns to the MT.
The 200 arrives in the 44th with a boundary from Stewart into the MT car park. It means that the English spinner ends at 203 with 55 for 1, he went for a few in his last. Leonard returns for the 45th with Stewart swinging from the hip at most things getting flashed boundaries and such like. 224 for 7 suggests they may get more than hoped for as Ogborne takes the next with Qadri on 27 and Stewart on 37 the 50 partnership arrives quickly ands then Stewart goes to an individual half ton from 32 balls with a six to the MT (6 fours and 2 sixes). Ogborne sees him setting up and puts on into him which he pops up to Dickson at 241 in the 46th. In comes Nathan Gilchrist to bat on his old haunt.
Qadri is happy to take over and pushes the score past 250 off Aldridge in the 47th. He is partnered at the end by Alfie who takes the 48th. At 258, the older bowler gets Qadri slogging but he did take 43 off 30. 258 for 9 becomes 267 when Gilchrist is out to Kaseywith an over to go and Somerset need 268 to win.
Good slow bowling from Goldsworthy and Vaughan backed up by wickets from Leach and Aldridge there is a feeling that they are probably 20 runs short if we bat well but that is yet to be seen of course.
The Reply
Swanepoel and Stewart begin against Umeed and Thomas. George smacks two fours before he dies trying for a fourth at 32 for 1. Lewis never really gets going and is caught by Finch off Stobo for 7 off 15 balls at 48 for 2 and it doesn't look good.
Andy Umeed and James Rew need to rebuild as we reach 48 for the loss of 2 in the 10th. It takes them to the fourth ball of the 11th before they pass 50. Qadri and spin is introduced for the 16th resulting in 66 for 2 and it is 84 for 2 before Rew puts the fifth ball of the 19th into the Botham for the first six of the Somerset innings. The 50 partnership comes with a one bounce four to the MT car park at 97 from 63 balls with Rew on 28 (31) and Umeed 37(48) and the 100 arrives in the 20th.
Parkinson has been introduce and Rew seems to have taken a liking to him as he moves to 49. He goes to a 47 ball 50 (7 fours and 1 six) which makes Kent return to Evison for the 25th at 129. We finish that at 134 for 2 in comparison to Kent's 112 for 4. We are ahead but a lot of their runs came at the back end of the innings. However, the two Somerset men are in as Leaning takes the nextand is met with a huge six into the Somerset stand from Rew followed by a 50 to Umeed from 62 balls with 3 fours. The 100 partnership also arrives from 103 balls at 144 for 2.
Stobo takes the 28th from the MT at 146 for 2 and the 150 arrives off a no ball and that makes this the highest 3rd wicket partnership between Kent and Somerset at Taunton beating the one from Elgar and Trego in 2017. By the 30th the home side have 158.
Kent get a lifeline as Rew is bowled neck and crop by Gilchrist at 165. In comes Vaughan for his batting debut nad is almost immediately run out at the non striker's end by a straight drive that Stobo deflects into the stumps. Out without facing a ball is not the best way to start your career!! 165 for 4. He is replaced by the skipper with a need to rest again and favour Umeed who is seeing the ball well. Stewart and Parkinson have the job to keep the Somerset men jumpy as the 200 arrives in the 36th and at 203 Dickson pops one up straight to midwicket to Evison off Stewart for 23. In comes Josh Thomas and the over ends at 205 for 5 needing 63 off 14 overs. It gets clolser as Parkinson bowls Thomas who also chops on at 212 and the score moves to the home side needing 46 off 10 overs with 'Double Nelson' on the scoreboard and allrounder Aldridge joining Umeed. The feeling must be that as long as the Somerset opener is there we will get this one but it gets more nervous when Kasey snicks behind at 231 for 7 off Swanepoel in the 43rd.
Jack Leach comes out and calms nerves by slogging the bowler for six to the scoreboard at the Gimblett to take the score to 240. 28 off 36 becomes 24 off 30. Parkinson is not happy when Umeed is not given out LBW halfway through the the 46th. It isn't helped when the bat smacks the spinner for six 2 balls later to go to 97 and take the score over 250. And keeps the strike with 14 needed facing Stobo. He goes to an superb 100 with a six off 119 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes. 8 needed which becomes four with a imperious four to the CA and the game ends with another six into the Somerset to take Umeed to match winning 114 and a victory by 3 wickets with 3 and a half overs left. Somerset 270 for 7 and a very good first win of 2024 in this format.

Love this first game because I have no idea how this is going to go against a pretty recognisable Kent white ball XI includung Compton, Leaning, Evison, Swanepoel, Parkinson.

This is Jacks second OD game for Somerset in 9 years
Overall? More than we would have hoped for but what is a 50 over par score on here? Guess we'll find out. Suggestions are this is 20/30 short.... hmmm

As Bill Lawry would say "he's on fire".
We all know there are a number of players with consecutive test hundreds, led by Everton Weekes (5) and we also know there are number of players with 3 consecutive ODI hundreds including Baber Azam.
However, what is the Somerset record for consecutive limited overs centuries? A question for those with memories better than mine.
It was a good start with a side probably a seamer down agai st a decent Kent bowling attack even if their batting was a bit too pedestrian.
Andy"s century needs to be taken in relation to the fact that he scored at about a run a ball but only passed the boundary 7 times. So he kept the score moving regularly by playing into the gaps & ticking along. Excellent mature work with the odd bit of flamboyance.

Run out of time last night to post any photos.
Before the match a one minute silence was held in memory of Ken Palmer.

What a great innings from Andy Umeed, he also had good support from other batsmen, this is six runs.
I had to post my second photo of Jack Leaning being bowled by Lewis Goldsworthy, wicketkeeper in the way of the stumps being hit.
George Thomas played a few good shots while he was batting.

I know the club doesn’t want the “weakened” team to be any excuse, but any success will be against the odds and to be applauded.
LoL, I’m glad you’re back on-site - but you’re wrong about the Paris and London opening ceremonies - 2012 was especially amazing, and if you’ve any appreciation of theatre and the arts, these events are (almost) as special as our young team winning cricket matches.
In 2012, I actually managed to get tickets in the ballot for the Paralympics opening ceremony. Our tickets found us seated opposite the late Queen who opened the ceremony. It is the only time in my life I have been in the presence of the monarch. I should perhaps mention that she was seated in her box on one side of the stadium and we in our seats directly opposite her on the other side of the stadium ...

My answer to the simple question - would you rather have watched Rew and Umeed batting against Kent than the opening of the Paris Olympics? - my answer would be obvious, though I have to accept that that would be a minority view.

The 2012 ceremony was more down to Danny Boyle than any sporting plans... his inventive mind and his name getting people to do it. I was provisionally on the long list to be one of drummers at the ceremony but after initial 'weeding out' rehearsals/auditions in Bristol I got a job in Oman and couldn't go any further in it all
