Also, if we wanted to bowl then CR would simply have done so, therefore one assumes that CR wanted to bat. If CR wanted to bat and they wanted to bowl, then there would have been zero point holding a toss. I'm sure the laws allow for the toss to be scrapped if both sides want the same thing.

The problem with the agreement AG is that both sides need to declare their hand and that could then lead to one changing their preference to gain an advantage.

It's good to see Abell starting to come through that sticky spell. By his own admission when interviewed he has had a poor season, but he has had some key score along the way.

I personally almost always see OT as a bat first track as it usually turns.
Maybe Lancs might have taken a look at Jack's recent figures and thought "oh 'eck," or whatever it is they say on that side of the pennines and left extra grass on as a result?

Anthony Gibson has just said that MT and CR have 50,000 first-class runs between them, but they are actually still over 200 runs short of that great achievement.
At the end of today's innings MT had 24683, while CR is on 25091 right now (at his current innings of 23).
Perhaps somebody who knows how to do these things could let mr Gibson know the latest situation.

Rogers sounding as though he is on track for another underwhelming score, sounds like they are all over him.
Apparently according to the BBC commentary the three games that Lancashire have won this season have all been at Old Trafford when they bowled first. Given the score at tea I would rather be in Chris Rogers shoes!
But I believe that one James Anderson was present in their attack for all three games, which may have had some bearing on the outcome....
I've probably given CR the kiss of death but he has contributed a useful 24 so far, despite them being all over him.

I have looked up Jim Allenby's stats for us in CC cricket.
In nearly 2 seasons playing, he has scored just over 1000 runs averaging 24 with a highest score of 64.
Bowling wise, 41 wickets @ 30.5 and best bowling figures of 4 - 67.
Damn poor to my way of thinking. He must be somebody's blue eyed boy, but then this is Somerset.

So we lost a bundle of wickets to the new ball - but I'd have taken 339-7 after being put in away from home. Well played to Young Tom, Tres and the skipper at the top, and to Old Man Pete and Very Young Ryan at the end. A good day for us.

I don't think Allenby's stats are damn poor at all. Not as good as we'd like, esp the batting, but the bowling stats are fine - esp as I'd say he was signed primarily as a one-day player. Not brilliant, I agree, but far from "damn poor".
Thank God for the collapse and Jim Allenby. What a miserable day some of our posters would have had otherwise.

Allenby is still Not remotely good enough to bat At five. Rogers continues to hugely under-perform relative to his performance At all other County stops - where he really did average 50.

339 for 7 is an excellent first day score, especially as Lancs put us in (even although we apparently dodn't want to bowl) Not everyone will succeed every day but as long as several do then it's fine. Peter T's innings-and his strike rate were of vital importance. if we can manage to find another 61 runs then we shall be well up with the clock and it is in the hands of the bowlers

Thanks SP, I did indeed read the table wrong and I was surprised at such a high average, so I guess 34 is very poor for such a past consistent performer, especially on many batsmen friendly pitches. I wonder if the new policy doesn't suit, as players lose their touch.

I agree that Allenby's runs aren't good enough for a top 6 place. I also disagree that you would need another allrounder to replace a specialist batting position (I'm sure Trego could pick up some slack). If we were going to give an all-rounder a go there I would suggest that Roelof would be vying for another chance.
Over 339-7 is a pretty good score so far at Lancs, so we shouldn't be too dismayed. We don't want a high scoring game, especially with the rain.

Am I right that 3 of our batsmen (Abell,,Trego and Davies) have all passed their highest scores in this innings. Is that a record? I think we were right to pile on the runs. It will be the only way to win this,but we must be patient.
So all three of them will queuing up to get the drinks in tonight. Don't expect great fielding tomorrow!
Well, that was a funny old innings. From great through a familiar collapse to a decent-ish position at the end of day one (I think Somerset would have settled for that at the start of play, though less so at nearly 200 for 1). And I can't imagine three highest scores in one innings is anything other than a very rare event. Shame that Ryan Davies didn't get his maiden ton, but over the last month or so he seems to have found his batting mojo (for want of a better expression) in both the one-day and four-day games, justifying Somerset's belief in him (which hasn't always been shared here). Not sure a result is likely, but after being put in I think they can take pride in 500+

I have heard some talk, Rodders, that OT lost some of its famous pace and bounce when the square was re-aligned due to problems with glare from the sun.
It doesn't sound a very good pitch, but it sounds like TG did extremely well on it this afternoon.
Kerrigan got battered but I would still think that Jack may come into this game over the final two days.

Terrific effort with the bat. So pleasing that Ryan seems to be picking up in confidence and contributing well.
As for PT, he is having a cracking season with the willow, more than offsetting his sparse wicket count with the ball.

Pleased to hear Ryan Davis continues to mature, and Peter Trego making his highest first class score.
It might well get Peter a further contract, but likely to depend on who the club have lined up to sign for next season.

Given his recent record as a middle order batsman in Div.1 of the CC, 2014 - 644@34, 2015 - 871@36, 2016 to date - 902@53 is there any question of him not being given a new contract?
In CC matches this season PT has now risen to 2nd position behind MT in terms of runs scored and average. JH is just behind in 3rd.

Trego has done marvellously well to reinvent himself, relatively late in his career, as a "proper" batsman.
I've seen Davies' previous three innings - in each of which he batted well - and yesterday's innings provides further evidence that he is now coping with the step-up to first team cricket.

One hopes Tom that if Somerset can finish in the top four, then we can attract a couple od quality players to the club .
I'm not sure how much attention prospective signings would pay to whether we finish, say, 3rd or 5th.
As always in cricket, there is (or will be) a problem of too many suitors chasing too few potential signings of any real quality. If we can bring in even one decent player from the existing County circuit that would be a step forward.
The thing that Peter Trego has done is to focus on trying to bat time rather than just being a cavalier. There are very few leopards, IMO, that even so much as try to change their spots, let alone succeed, so he is certainly to be congratulated for having done so.
Unless his contract demands are obscene (and I have no reason to suppose that they might be) then we would be daft to let him go..
After all, we have still not remotely fixed the number five position in our CC batting order and Chris Rogers has only temporarily patched-up (and noT wholly convincingly) the number three position.. so why would we want to willingly create a problem at number six as well? I'm inclined to agree. We did have three players in the most recent England Under-19 squad - only Worcestershire had as many.
We need to fix the number five position. I don't know if Peter Trego does not wish to bat there or if Matthew Maynard does not wish him to, but that would be the obvious shorter term fix from within our ranks. Preferably, though, we'd get somebody new in to fill that role and leave Pete at six.
We may need to do something about the number three batting role. And we could use some increased depth in the bowling.. for example, the club's desire to add a left-arm paceman is an open secret.
But we have limited resources and the number of available players of any quality available to move will be limited, so if we can only do one thing, let's make it upgrading the number 5 CC batting spot.

I would say that, if one assumes that each "class," of the most promising young players is liable to spend about two years each playing regularly in the seconds before they are deemed to be ready for the first XI ..

if there are, say, six players in each "class," of the most promising youngsters..

There's a pretty amazing conversion rate with those players Tom, if that continues we would be more than fine.
Of course not every player makes, but we enough have been coming through lately.

2 have already gone to another county, but I doubt more than another 2/3 would be snapped up by another Div. 1 county. They are simply not consistent enough performers, and I am not convinced that this will turn around quickly. For example, Hildreth has been around for a long time and yet he is still being castigated for being inconsistent.
Bottom line is that we still haven't won anything.

If the ECB are powerless to prevent pitches being prepared like this, then there should be a limit on the number of overs each team can face in their first innings. There was a limit of 100 overs per team many years ago when matches were scheduled for 3 days.

A limit on the number of overs in the first innings of Championship games would be worth exploring.
I'm sure there are any number of reasons (none of which immediately come to mind), why this may not be a good idea, but it at least would put a cap on the impact of dull & dreary wickets.

There was a period in the Sixties (in the days of three-day matches) when the first innings was reduced to (I think) 65 overs, but the experiment did not last long, perhaps because it was felt to be too constraining.
Now here's a thought: Limit the two first innings to 200 overs between them. Then if the side batting first is all out in, say 80 overs the side batting second can bat for up to 120 overs if they can survive that long. My fading memory reminds me that something like that was allowed in the early days of limited over cricket.

Identifying that we have untried resources who may come up short is a little different to identifying them as poor BEFORE they are tried Tom.

Weren't we also assessed as relegation fodder at the start of the season with almost nothing going for us in any format? One poster made that Surrey assessment as far as I know and you made the Somerset one.... seems both were a little off the money.

I didn't take exception to your comment about "dead wood" Wellesley. I was just interested as to who you thought fell into that category. For what it's worth, of the eleven who played against Lancashire I would put Allenby in that category as far as the four day game is concerned but the rest of them seem to me to be at the very least competent county cricketers and in some cases very good ones.Moreover, a team that has lost only one of its last 16 County Championship matches must have something going for it!

As someone who has watched SCCC for over 40 years, it is pretty difficult to take your gloom ridden assessment seriously. Certainly as measured against some really difficult times we had in the late 1980's, 1990's & mid 2000's.
Taking a look at the Championship averages below, which players fall into the 'dead wood' category ?

(With the notable & unfortunate exception of the T20 format), there are so many differences to years gone by:
a) We challenge for every game.
b) We win from positions of seeming defeat, the polar opposite of our previous sphere of excellence of clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. (Were you at the Surrey Championship game or the Gloucs one dayer ?).
c) We have three players likely to have 1000+ Championship runs by season end.
d) We have one of the best young spinners in the land.
e) Cove & Jove offer aggression and speed, whilst still maturing.
f) We have a Championship skipper (hopefully he will stay for another year or two), willing to take risks & bold decisions to try to get over the line.
g) We are now in our ninth unbroken year of Championship division one status, and with three games to go are challenging for a top three position.
h) We came within 8 runs of getting to the RLODC final.
i) We have a second team performing admirably,
j) Our academy is producing/honing talented players offering excellent promise for the future.
g) We have strong finances, good and improving ground facilities and superbly loyal (in most cases) supporters.
All is not risy in the garden. Our T20 campaign was a mess & Management have acknowledged this.
But to portray our efforts this year in such a derisory manner is frankly insulting to all concerned, and specifically the players.

I doubt he will be overly bothered. After all, everybody knows that such attempts can be rumbled by comparing IP addresses unless, of course, one uses completely different machinery. Had he wanted to avoid detection, he would surely have done precisely that.

I have moderated the situation from yesterday this morning. We suddenly, at about 9:30 last night, started to receive messages from a supposedly new poster operating from the same address as a poster already registered on this forum. The two posters seemingly were talking to each other and to the population as two identities with no connection. Unfortunately their location comes up on the moderator's screen with every post and they were using the same address. We have asked in the past that posters keep to one identity on this forum as anyting else has always caused trouble and is rarely for innocent reasons.
The second poster was exhibiting the traits of an internet 'troll' and a PM message was sent to the original poster with a request to 'cease and desist' or explain. I have had no response from said poster so must assume at the moment that this activity was deliberate.
This morning the site received a post that suggested that the warning had been ignored so as the original member of the forum has another address to communicate on I have blocked the dual message address and will await developments.
If anyone has any disagreement with this decision please contact me by PM to discuss it or send your reservations directly to SN.
Please ignore any other posts from 'Wellesley' if they appear. Be assured I will be dealing with them.

I think it might be a Langer type decision. Not quite there as a batsman any more and thinking if you can't do it properly then why do it at all.

The decision is entirely understandable, especially if he feels he is no longer the batsman he was. He has done a great job this season and all I ask is that he leads us to wins in each of the remaining three matches, which should guarantee the championship.
I also have to remind him that he and MT need to score another 201 between them to reach a joint aggregate of 50,000.
It all sounds easy enough to me.

I did wonder, before the season started whether the motivation would still be there, given that this was a guy who had been motivated, for a long time, by having a chip on his shoulder about not being deemed good enough for Australia and then, latterly, by the need to keep scoring runs to keep his Baggy Green place.
Perhaps it's a skills/age thing but I think motivation is the more likely source of his issues this season.
I don't blame Mr Gibson at all for publicising this, but I'm not sure it's hugely helpful to have this in the public domain, prior to season's end *unless* everyone within the dressing-room is already aware of this. If those within the dressing-room were not aware of it then their desire to please their leader may be somewhat diminished by this news.
Should the news be confirmed, then I fervently hope that Mr Maynard will not simply turn around and award the club Captaincy to Jim Allenby because a non-negotiable part of the decision should be that the new man should unambiguously be worth his place in the CC first XI. And whatever Mr Maynard might think, it is probably only Jim Allenby's mum that thinks him to be unambiguously worth a CC1 first team place.
Equally, if CR has confirmed this news, privately, to Mr Maynard then this *could* be a a strong recruiting angle for Mr Maynard viz the domestic market...
... For example, has Scott Borthwick decided where is going to yet? If not, might the offer of Captaincy help to persuade him that his future could lie in the West Country?

While he certainly hasn't made the stack of runs that I daresay he hoped to make, he hasn't been entirely useless with he bat - 656 CC runs @ 34. I'd like the club to try to persuade him to stay on for another season to give more time to line up his successor.
I would very much like him to stay and hope it is just a negotiating ploy.

I can't agree that your assumptions about motivation are correct, AGod, (and you have to admit that they are only assumptions unless you know Rogers a lot better than the rest of us do). It could well be that he is so motivated by the desire for excellence that now that he is seemingly falling short of the standards he has set himself over the years he now feels obliged to reconsider his future. It is not, in my view, the motivation that is fading, but the excellence.
