Still in Chester le Street for a one dayer with four teenage bowlers in a "squad" of 11. James Hildreth loses Vernon Philander and none of the injured players are back except James Overton who joins his brother in Somerset colours for the first time. The other veterans of Trego, Kieswetter and Waller have a lot on their shoulders. No Ian Blackwell for the home side.

Injury hit Somerset stay in the North East for their 40 over and lose another level of experience as Vernon Philander is once more not picked for a short format game. James Overton has however recovered from a slight niggle and has travelled up to join his brother and a side of youngsters.
The side is;
Craig Kieswetter, Pete Trego, James Hildreth, Arul Suppiah, Alex Barrow, Craig Meschede, Lewis Gregory, James Overton, George Dockrell, Max Waller and Craig Overton
Hands up all those who would have predicted that as the side to play Somerset's second one day game of the season. Four teenage bowlers with two of them only one month into their 18th year! Once more the skipper wins the toss and puts the opposition in to see what his side will have to follow. The opening partnership (now getting to know each other) is once again Craig Overton and Pete Trego and they once again look useful going for only 2 off the first 12 balls. After 4 overs Durham have moved to 16 but the ball has passed the bat and we hope for something akin to the four day game when they dominated the home side's batting.

So Jove replaces Lord Lucan is the only change fron the Championship side.Will it be too exhausting for VP to be 12th man?

I didn't see Durham's second innings but in the first innings Vernon was less effective than I thought he would be. I'm sure he was trying his best but (fortunately for Durham!) he was not in top form.
In a way though that's good for Somerset because your best bowlers were the young lads Overton & Meschede.
I think we might be one specialist batsman short tomorrow-Breese, Borthwick & Plunkett are all good batsmen but the top 5 are not in great form so a collapse could be on the cards if we lose a couple of early wickets.
However I have a feeling we will win tomorrow! It's been a very difficult start to the season but I'd be astonished if the team doesn't start playing well soon.

Figures do, sometimes lie I know, but I have been surprised at the drop-off in Vernon's analysis's since the first match I saw him bowling. Then I was very worried about the trouble he might put the England batsmen in with virtually every ball, and his sustained accuracy and zip off the wicket. Now it appears that he is not so threatening a prospect!

As I posted elsewhere, personally I have sympathy with the argument that says ban overseas players except for the T20.
Philander is a fine bowler and it was a real coup for us to sign him.
However, once there was talk of South Africa intervening about how much he plays, the alarm bells started ringing.
I appreciate long gone are the days of an overseas joining a county for the whole season..but we've signed one for a crucial part of the season with restrictions attached to him. He didn't play at Notts because it was too cold and might have aggrevated the back twinge he suffered. We couldn't bowl him as much as we liked at Warks when the match was ours for the taking. He is not allowed to play one day cricket. As Geordie writes elsewhere, when he does play he seems to be used in agreed spells rather than what the match dictates.
I'm not criticising him..the two matches at Taunton, he's bowled well and he seems to have fitted in well to the side. But after the Mendis fiasco last season and what's happened this time with Philander, do the club have to look again at the policy of splashing out big bucks on a big name for the start of the season..when in neither case it's really made a huge difference?

I'm sure Brian saw all of this coming. He would have known that SA would not allow us to simply use Philander however we pleased.
That being the case, Brian obviously made a judgement that VP with limitations would be better than A N Other without.
I, too, was of that view.
But I'm beginning to think that that view was wrong. His returns in the two away games have been really ordinary.

Well he still has 18 wickets at around 20. Not too bad. He helped bowl us to a win against Middlesex and carried an inexperienced bowling attack in the one innings we managed against Lanc.
Disappointments would be his bowling at Durham, missing Trent Bridge where he could have had a field day and failing to clean up the Warks tail.
I'm of the opinion that the more you play, often the better you get..Pete Trego being an obvious example..and also players like Craig Meschede benefitting from a consistent run in the side.

I'm sure much of what you say is right. I suspect that he probably is, either suffering from the change in the weather, or is carrying some sort of injury.
My point in raising it earlier was that the Philander who I watched from over his arm in my seat at long off, filled me with concern for our England batters in the Tests.

I know OB. The commentators were purring in that first spell but he hasn't done too bad since and has passed the bat amany many times. I just get the feeling that the media and some others are now looking for reasons to blame him or those signed him when little if any of this has been his fault any more than anyone else.
I haven't seen him more's the pity but most of the commentary I have heard, except for this Durham game have rated him highly and classified him as unlucky or a bit too good.

Yeah, Grockle, as soon as Philander got that central contract then I think Brian would have known that the goal-posts would have moved.
I would think that with Philander guaranteed all that UCBSA cash, then Brian probably could have opted out of the deal at that point without VP being too upset about it (or motivated to sue!) and I'm sure the UCBSA would have encouraged Philander to accept the decision if it had been made.
Certainly we know that there were discussions between UCBSA and club over Philander's workload before he arrived in the country so Brian definitely would have known of potential issues once that was raised.
But one imagines that Brian still thought that VP would be better than any alternative even if it did mean having to tread carefully with his employer.

Sixty-six Seasons a Somerset Supporter
After a relatively warm sunny day yesterday (in comparison to the rest of the season so far) its back to the thermals, fleeces and wooolly hats. Very cold, stiffish breeze and very gloomy here at CLS. My camera keeps telling me it thinks I should be using the flash. If the light had been like this yeserday afternoon suspect the umps would've taken them off.
This when I struggle with Somerset!
You ask a new attack to give you something to aim at and they do that then what happens? The experienced men in the side. The backbone of the batting capitulate in 5 overs and leave the new guys to do what they can.
I don't mind it if the less experienced players make mistakes while doing their jobs to the best of their ability but the men who supposedly know what they are doing then don't do THEIR job!!
So frustrating!! Harrison (debut) 4/0/2/10!! 27 for 3 for heaven's sake!!

It's very quiet on this thread this afternoon.
At 24 for 3, we face an uphill (though not impossible) task. I have to confess I was a little surprised that James didn't throw the ball to Max to have a go. Unless he has been injured whilst fielding, for what reason is he in the team?
I know that we are down to bare bones in being able to put out a side, but that surely does not merit not letting him have a bowl under the circumstances does it?

Realistically, Lewis Gregory is sadly not at the races at all following his back injury. So one might have thought Max would have been given the two overs that were instead given to Gregory.

Lets hope the batting youngsters today prove as successful as the bowling youngsters yesterday.
I am delighted that so many of the youngsters are coming through.
The Max situation to me signals the fact that he is not rated or trusted, and the way he is being kept from turning his arm can do absolutely nothing for his confidence. If and when everybody is fit, if I were advising him, I would say get out on loan anywhere, and certainly do not sign again in 2013. Either find a club where your talent is valued or go back to Cape Town and become a surfing champion.
Today is not a day for spin bowling. I suspect if Lewis hadn't gone for 20-odd off 2 overs George wouldn't have bowled much. There may ot be much spin from Durham either - they've bowled 4 seamers so far and still have Plunkett to come.

I tend to agree with you old boy that there does not appear to be much trust placed upon Max's ability with the ball, even in the one - day format.
But does this (if indeed it is the case) stem from the dressing - room or from the field?
I hope that James is his own man on the field. He should not necessarily follow what Marcus might have done, and nor should he be a marionette with those not on the field of play pulling the strings.
It is still early days for him in his newly acquired role as captain, and I am sure that he will succeed if he stamps his authority down upon anyone who might try to influence or usurp him.
Should it have been necessary for him to have already done so, then that is positive news – IMHO of course.
If we are actually paying philander then I'm sorry the whole thing is a joke. He has mind set on cape town and if it weren't for injuries then I'd let him go now. Better investing in our future although it means another trophy less season. Personally I thought his commitment yesterday was terrible. Trego dropped blackwell and he wasn't bothered will he be more upset that Manure didn't win the league or Somerset didn't win yesterday....mmmm!he should take a leaf out of triggers book. Bowled his heart out yesterday and was devasted when we didn't win.

Trego dropped blackie grockle. He was distraught. Philander didn't seem bothered. I thought it was a great effort yesterday.
Just about to post the same. If only another one of the older guys had stood. Do we pay them as well?
A creditable effort by our young side. Special plaudits to Alex, Craig M, Arul, J.Overton and George.
That said, it would be nice to win another game soon. It's been 6 fruitless outings since we beat Middlesex.

Never satisfying to lose, but it sounds from the radio commentary like another quite outstanding performance from our young lads today. Alex especially - and hardly playing what some of us might have thought was his natural game
Get used to it LB it's going to take a while. Not all the fault of the side and there's certainly more positive aspects than negative to the development of this group of players presently.
Well they got closer to the total than I though they were going to at one time, a pity we didn’t have more from the earlier batsmen apart from Arul.

I left the ground before the late drama! It must have been a fantastic innings from Barrow to get Somerset close to victory because a Durham seemed to be cruising to victory when I left.
It was windy and cold but I enjoyed the game, poor start by Durham with the bat and then a fairly untroubled partnership between Muchall & Smith. I thought our total would be a winning one if we got Kieswetter & Trego out cheaply and the debutant Jamie Harrison did the job-very impressed by him-he had one tricky over giving away 3 consecutive free hits.
Liam Plunkett bowled well in his comeback game, wicket with his first ball thanks to a quite brilliant catch by Will Smith.
Not sure why Onions wasn't allowed to play because other memmbers of the England squad did play.

Are we the arsenal of cricket? Good youngsters looking good, they will mature but not won a damn thing since 2005. Quite frankly we are in the here and now and whilst may have good youngsters I don't like having to forego a season to get them there, if they do at all. Really worried about Gregory. Meschede is now the better player.
I'm back home late to add my two pennorth, Batting, once we'd lost CK Pete and JAmes for a total of 14 we were going to struggle. Lots of praise to Alex in particular but well supported by the other guys. We never gave up. Bowling was OK.because itr was a rotten day. I t was bitterly cold with a quite brisk wind and atrocious light. Lewis really hasn't got his act together and I was disappointed not to see Max. A little loss of radar from Jove but good figures. Most impressive was the energy in the field the positive working together and the most superb outfield catching. I didn't think we'de get any where near as close but when Alex was going and Harrison started to do a ,what was his name, Scott Bosworth? I had visions of a most enormous turnround.

It's arguably a slightly different situation but in both the Middx and Warks games VP seemed livid - according to commentators - when appeals for catches/LBWs were turned down. Tends to suggest he is no shrinking violet.
This is how Vernon Philander bent his back against Middlesex, I wouldn’t have thought he would have bowled any different in this match. Without photos from this match to compare we can’t judge him.
It sounds like a superb effort, with all the young lads coming through and doing so well these really are terribly exciting times.

I am concerned about Max. Against Surrey he was by far the most economical bowler, yet only bowled half his allocation and he didn't bowl yesterday. Why retain him and then not use him when he rarely lets us down?

I'm not sure you can say he rarely lets us down - we don't have that much evidence to base that on because he is rarely asked to bowl in anger.

Well said!. Other posters will know my views on the use we make of him. Currently his pluses are all built around his running - I would guess he can give every other Somerset player a five yard start and still beat them in 100 yard sprint, and he is among the very best fielders we have. Although I do not know him personally, my impression is that he is a lad that just gets on with everyone, and perhaps because of his laid back style does not push himself forward enough. That is just my opinion - what I've seen of his bowling gives me the impression that everytime Somerset do not bowl him, the team is missing a trick. Whatever the wicket was like, the match situation in both the four day game and the 40 over yesterday were ideal opportunities for him to be used. Frankly if they are not going to use him then, I fail to see when he might get on. Is it a case of the management BEFOREHAND deciding what bowling should used, and the skipper deciding in which order they should be used?? My guess, based on the situation so far is that when the injuries clear up his First Class chances will disappear, and he won't be with us next year.
Just in case fellow posters misunderstand me, I am delighted that the other young players have been given the opportunities in the last few days - none of them have let themselves or Somerset down, and our future is bright!!

Agree OB! Max is a talent being underused. He is often one of the most economicla bowlers when used.
Always felt that, Kartik apart, we are afraid of using spinners in the one day game in case they get tonked!!
With Gregory being in a bad place with the ball at the moment it was an ideal opportunity to give Max a go. Although having not been there it may be that it was a day for seam - but George did ok!

That was another highly creditable day and we can be extremely optimistic (and I agree with BJ that the future starts on Wednesday). Nothing serious to worry about, remembering that Sussex lost four matches out of twelve in last year's CB40 and still qualified for the semis.

You should never have to get used to not winning! Just because a team are developing, it does not mean they cannot win occasionally along the way! I think they will soon too..
Agree with you that there are more positives than negatives at the moment..the CC match was a terrific effort and we would surely have won but for the weather..we were so close! But I just don't want people hiding behind excuses of injuries and inexperience..if this run of 6 winless matches were to extend much further, we can kiss goodbye to 2 of the 3 competitions before the T20 break. There is still enough talent out there to win matches, despite our huge injury list and reliance on youngsters. In fact, it's the youngsters who are performing well at the moment!
