Somerset face what could be the last game of the 2011 season ot=r what could be their ticket to further new glory in T20. A real 'must win' game against the Warriors. No complex calculations. We win and we are in the semi finals, we lose and we are on a plane back to Blighty. Adam Dibble is the surprise inclusion for George Dockrell. A surprise only in the fact that Lewis Gregory is not chosen which suggests that his 'Dehli Belly' has not responded to treatment and he is not fit. Otherwise the side is the one that went down to Bangalore on Monday.

We face the Warriors with one objective to fulfill. We have to win the game. If the South Africans stop us doing that then they qualify for the semi-finals. If we win, we do! Alfonso has gone for a seam heavy attack dropping George Dockrell and bringing in Adam Dibble instead of the probably unfit Lewis Gregory. The side is;
Trego, Kieswetter, van der Merwe, Buttler, Hildreth, Compton, Suppiah, Thomas, Kartik, Kirby, Dibble
We have won the toss and the skipper has decided to post an early score and offer the Warriors the chase. It does not start wonderfully as Pete Trego is caught behind off the bowling of Tsotsobe with onlky 5 balls gone. This brings RvdM in early and we all hope he will last a little longer than the 2 balls oin the game on Monday. He plays his usual aggressive form of the game but helps a particularly reticent CK to push the score towards 50. His 32 off 16 gets it all moving but he is the next man to perish in the 6th over from Smuts when he skies one with 48 on the board. The Warrior bowling attack is tying the men down a little - 10 an over is what sides seem to be looking for. We are under that and James Hildreth is still finding it difficult to score at any real pace.
Although James manages to score at a run a ball when he is the third man out caught in the deep off Botha, we have a mere 75 and we are halfway through the 12th over. This is not enough and Somerset send in Jos to create something with his England partner. By the 16th we have 110 as the younger man puts two into the stands. This gets Craig moving and some boundaries start to come. They still have a lot to do though at 119 with three overs left.
The 50 partnership comes up in the 18th as they take 10 off it but 129 is not enough so boundaries are what the side needs. Ball one of Theron's 19th is 'Dilshaned' by Jos for four and he takes 2 off the next but he smacks the third to Boje and goes at 135 for 4 with 9 balls left. Craig takes a single to bring up his 50 and his new partner Nick Compton takes another off the next. We have 137 with 6 balls to come and Compo on strike.
The last over from Tsotsobe starts with a dot ball and then NC takes a single to put the big striker on.n He puts the third into the crowd with a full middled stroke. The next is cutter which results in another dot. The fifth is a bye and Nick has the last one. Prediction on a reverse sweep? No. Just a little smack for one and 146 for 4. It's not enough IMHO. I think the guys will be spending the weekend in Taunton.

Alfonso opens as usual against Smuts and Prince who take 5 off the first with a boundary off the last ball. Kirbs shares the new ball and is his usual aggressive self and he goes for 6. Dibble is the third man into the attack but he is rewarded for delivering his first T20 ball with an opposition boundary from Prince. He goes for 13 off his first unfortunately coming back well from the initial boundary but losing it a bit at the end of the 6 balls. Kirbs comes around the wicket for the 4th trying to keep the variety coming. Pace off the 5th ball does for Prince as he gets a leading edge and sends it straight to the Somerset captain. It is 30 for 1 and goodbye Ashwell well done Stevo!!
RvdM takes the 5th as a critical bowler. The spinners have to hold the Warriors in check and turn the screw. But Ingram (a left hander) likes this stuff and takes 11 off the first 3. They have 42 after 5 and Alf comes in for the 6th to Smuts, he also puts the press on the dangerous Ingram and holds them down to 3 off the over.
On comes MK and he is also a key man in this innings. He has to maintain control for us to win. He also goes for 3 and the Warriors did not get to 50. Pete comes in for the 8th and immediately looks to take the pace off the ball. Nevertheless the South Africans pass 50 with the second ball and nearly get a four with the third but are thwarted by the excellkent boundary fieldsing of James Hildreth. This is followed by another good stop from Nick in the field. The fielders have to help the bowlers if the batsmen get hold of them. You can't do anything about aerial boundaries but you can scrap for every run on the ground. 56 after 8. The Warriors need 91 from 71 balls.
Kartik gets his second ball wrong, he drags it short and Ingram puts it into the stand. Control, Control, Control Murali!! BY the 10th they are halfway there with 9 wickets in hand and the climb to the semis is getting steeper. 71 for 1 and RvdM is on for the 11th. The second ball has a BIG stumping appeal. Craig is confident that he has the batsman with his foot in the air but there seems to be a big discussion in the Third Umpire's room. Smuts gets the benefit and stays in. After 11 they have 77 but they still have 9 wickets available.
Dibble is back on. He gets Ingram to pull the third, the South African top edges and is a simple victim for Compton on the boundary. 79 for 2 and well done Adam! The other Smuts joins his brother at the crease with his side needing 66 off 49 and one brother nearly runs out the other one out off the second ball faced. 82 for 2 after 12 and a good over from the T20 debutant. MK is back on and tempts the more established JohnJohn to go for one. It doesn't go to the boundary. It goes into Arul Suppiah's capable hands and the Warrior's are 82 for 3. In comes Johan Botha and he takes his side to 87 at the end of the 13th. It's better but it has to keep going.
Dibble gets the 14th as the run rate rises to well over 8 (8.77) but it is well within the compass of a good T20 side. There is a huge need for wickets because we do not want to be going into the last 5 overs with the Warrior middle order intact, The pressure is rising on both sides because the winner finds themselves on the receinving end of a LOT of dollars. Adam finishes off well with a good tight over. 1 for 24 off his is very good.
91 for 3 at the start of the 15th which is bowled by Steve Kirby. His second ball is skied by Botha and Arul is under it...but fumbles it!! Much to the chagrin of his bowler. The commentors ask whether that is the turning point? He seemed to have it under control and then lost his balance as the ball arrived and dropped it. The Warrior pair are looking to push the singles and the pressure tells because Botha tries the big shot again and this time Arul holds it!! 98 for 4 with one ball of the 15th to go. Kirbs goes for 8.
Now it is down to the nasty sharp end. 30 balls and 48 runs needed. 6 wickets in hand and spin back in with MK on for the 16th. There is nothing in it as we were 99 for 3. The hundred comes up with the first. But wicket 5 comes as Smuts K plays all around the third and is given out LBW. Nicky Boje is in and he can still take this away from us. MK bowls his last and keeps them to 103 with 4 to go. Kartik ends with 2 for 23...well done that spinning genius.
Alf comes on for the 17th. Somerset have taken 4 for 32 off the last 4 overs and we have the best men left to take this one home. But there is a boundary from the second ball - the first in 5 overs. 39 needed from 21 and Boje can do that! Thyssen probably isn't going to do it. A dot takes it to 2 runs per ball 38 off 19 and a single off the last is not really what the Warriors want. 7 off the over and 37 needed off 18 balls! Can we throw this away? They need a big over in double figures to stay in this one. 12.3 an over is what they need!!
Kirbs takes the 18th - the most important over of the game probably because if they get after him in this one the last 2 will be a problem. Boje gets a boundary off the first and they take 13 off the over. They still need 2 runs per ball but that's still possible. 23 from 12 and Alf backs himself for the 19th. 23 from 11. Ball 2 sees the back of Theyssen as MK takes the catch on the boundary (after a slight worry as he takes it really low to the ground)!! Parnell is in needing to help his side get 23 from 10 balls. The skipper bowls the third to Boje and they take a single. 22 from 9!! 22 from 8 as Alf pulls out the slow ball. Ball 5 is another big skier and Parnell goes for a duck as Arul takes a second on the boundary. 125 for 7 22 from 7 with 3 wickets left. Dyili is in but Boje is on strike. A leg bye and 2 runs off the captain's last with two wickets in the bag. The man is what they say he is!! 2 for 17 off 4 from the T20 Boss.
RvdM takes the last against Boje and Dyili. Ball 1 is a single. 20 off 5. Boundaries are required now. Ball 2 he bowls Dyili!! 127 for 8. 20 from 4 balls. Ohh this is good. This is very good!! The new man is Theron and he is facing. He bowls a yorker and gets a dot. 20 from 3 balls. Ball 4 is a dot and they need 20 off 2. A big hit leaves 14 from the last. We win by 13 runs and we.....

If he's fit to play get him in but don't decrease the batting capability because of it.

Lewis was scheduled to go home but then Craig M was injured so Lewis is still part of the squad although he, apparently, has the runs even though he's not had much chance with the bat!
I was speaking to Andy Nash two day's ago and I said to him it was lucky we didn't send those players home straight away and that Lewis Gregory was still out there.
I would put Gregory in for Arul, fielding apart, he appears surpass to requirements in this competition.
I see no issue in Thomas and Kartik batting at 7 and 8, their unconventional style works well for this format (Gregory at 9, followed by Dockrell and Tango.

An argument could be made that it is such a good batting track that less depth in batting than usual is required.
However, I personally would still err on the side of caution and keep Arul in the team, especially with Jos looking surprisingly out of sorts in the most recent game.

I think 'caution' is what we fall back on too easily Agod, but I do like Arul, so in the wider context on what will win us this game, I wouldn't be too unhappy if Arul was chosen ahead of Dockrell.

Evidently, the desire to play an extra seamer is so strong that the chance that some of us anticipated - Gregory for Dockrell, has become Dibble for Dockrell, presumably because Lewis is still ill.

It seems odd from a nearer distance as well. Obviously Lewis can't be fit enough but they think they've got a better chance with a heavier seam attack.

It's down to our batsmen to put a commanding target for Warriors to go for. In a way it's they who need to really perform today - if we post 180+ then the presure will all be on the Warriors rather than our bowlers.

Warriors look a better bowling side than batting side, on paper, to me. So it might make sense to put what might be their weaker suit under pressure.

Cannot understand why Tsotsobe was so abymsal for Essex. Presumably just total lack of motivation? He is certainly a good bowler.

Hopefully our spinners will not have a wet ball to contend with this time, so they may be able to help us with our defence of whatever we get in rather more effective fashion than they were able to bowl the other night?
Craig K will need to take on the scoring mantle now, as Compton/Hildreth only likely to manage around one a ball and we surely need 180+ to defend?
Hildreth never smacks me as a T20 player, just too slow/too many dot balls.
He consistenly scores at about a run a ball against what one might call 'higher level,' T20 sides e.g. in T20 Quarter-Finals, Finals Day games and CLT games.
His overall strike rate is better than 100, as he can score more quickly than a run a ball in T20 against teams like Gloucs and Glamorgan.

Will we be re-calculating the necessary target in the middle, in the light of this turn and how well their spinners are bowling?

Certainly does seem to be giving the spinners more rewards than seamers at first glance

Adam showed at Trent Bridge in the CC that he can hit a ball quite a long way, so he may yet have a role in that regard too.
The pitch has been revaluated in the 'commentary box' to a 160-165 pitch from a 180+
We just cannot play spin can we..think of all our losing T20 finals, this year's CB 40 final, etc etc

Have to agree sadly, although I think this is a poor pitch for this type of game far too much help for all bowlers
well well, a slow pitch where a "Quality spinner" would make it difficult to do well, and the player they "fly out" out isnt selected and the one who is proven at 20/20 was "sent home".And who are the "selectors who make these decisions?

You can only judge a game of cricket when both sides have batted. No sense in writing us off just yet. How can anybody not playing in the match know whether 146 will be a good score or not?

I entirely agree ronnie, tho how else are selection decisions taken? Anyway, I'm fully behind Andy if he's wearing a SCCC shirt, and back him, from my seat at my desk at work, to take 3 wickets in his next over.

Well, Big Jim, we are not (yet) the best (T20) side in the world but, apparently, we are in the top four!!!!

A great team effort, with everyone contributing. Dibble showed tremendous nerve, coming back from a loose first over to concede 11 in the next three.

Fantastic win Somerset..Well Done! It was the T20 final in reverse..post 140 odd and then take regular wickets in the field. Best performance from Kartik for a long time, great recovery by Dibble, lovely to see Craig bat so well rather than a quick 20 and out...so many positives today

Our players should be very happy as they will be richer (subject to the above.)
I don't think the club itself gets much money but hopefully any potential signings that Mr Rose may have in mind see this success (and the ka-ching) as a factor that would entice them to choose SCCC over other potential suitors.

It is not very often that it happens Grockle, but at the time of you penning that statement, I was almost in total agreement with you.
The difference was that I did come out and say it on here (or anywhere else come to that), because I know how unpredictable this particular imitation of our great game can be. No game is over until the fat lady sings.
Congratulations to everyone involved in displaying such a fine performance today. I really am delighted for the club, officials and the players.
I am now going to be out of the country for 10 days or so, and will probably not be able to keep in touch with our future progress - even by internet.

I think out of the purse for winning $2.5 m if Im correct then a portion is split between the players and the balance for the club.
Even if that is 60/40 for the players then its a hefty sum for both. I may be wrong though.

If chennai win we play Mumbai in Bangalore on Friday. If the Aussies win we will still play Mumbai, unless they beat Chennai by quite a big margin.If that's the case a saturday semi and a sunday final.
Wonderful win and a richly deserved match award for Alfie. I must confess I couldn't quite make out what Craig was playing at at times but clearly he read the conditions just right and I didn't.

I think maybe RVDM's innings gave a wrong impression of the pitch. Seems they were right about it being 10-15 too much for the Warriors!

yes average side was rather premature with his game over comments. T20 can fluctuate so much and this was a slow wicket with spin and a couple of wickets got us right in there.
Mumbai or NSW would be tough but both are beatable.

We all know that it is not 'real cricket' for the connoisseurs but it has proved to be absolutely fascinating drama in all the games and everyone involved should be congratulated. I wonder whether the poor bloke who bowled a half-volley last ball to the RCB number 10 when six required will ever recover from it!
Yes, that was an incredible finish in the 2nd game - Mumbai it is, though it sounds like the usual 'fixture fix' is taking place and our game has been moved to Chennai, so RCB get a home semi.

Wow, that was tense.. had to follow it sneakily on cricinfo at work and the commentary was a mess - they said Jos was out first ball, then not, then out a bit later, then it was Hildreth.. I was about ready to scream! Had to go and jump up and down in the ladies after we won.

I think even those of us who are a little unsure of the T20 have been enjoying this tournament, though let's be fair, those of us who truly support the boys would cheer for them even if they were playing tiddlywinks.

I note other people have mentioned it but factually Averageside saying Dibble bowling 3 overs for 24 (at the time of his post) was bad really shouldn't try to prove he is generally not talking sense. An 'average' of 8 an over in T20 is about the 'average' for most bowlers! Perhaps he will be posting here shortly to say that his view was based on the average opinion of average supporters with average knowhow on an average game in an average competition with average results, etc etc!!

I think that, at the time of averageside's posting of 13.18, Dibble had bowled just the one over - which had gone for a lot - can't recall how many. As a team, they had 24-0 off 3 overs.
He went for 13 off his first over, meaning he thereafter bowled 3 overs for 11 runs and 1 wicket. Pretty outstanding by all accounts.
To clarify the situation regarding semi final venues the official champions league site states,

I suspect (fear) that many of our players might well be! Good luck to them, of course, but we might struggle to get XI on the field in April and May.

Exactly Jim, I have watches this tournament because it is our Somerset team playing against strong opposition. I have watched parts of some of the other matches but not with the same interest.
Somerset can be proud of what they have achieved so far and if they don’t get any further they can come home with their heads held high.

I did manage to watch eventually without learning of the result-it meant I kept away from Grockles- and am so delighted for the lads. It's no fun if you do things easily. The semi final is a bonus-let's treat it as such . Our heads are held high no matter what. My delight is that is October 5th and there is STILL Somersetcricket to watch. The smile on my face is so big that if I were out people would be asking me what I'd done.

I have little time for the T20 circus, it's cheap, tacky and downright embarrassing, but I've loved the way the lads have gone out there and socked it to the so called best in the world.
I've said it since this format started, I'd support the boys in whatever they did, wherever they played, but I'm afraid that doesn't mean I love this format of the game.

Their largely gutless effort in the Test series this summer was disgusting, IMO. And I expect that, just as Dravid and Kumar were limited exceptions to that this past summer, there will also only be very limited exceptions to that when Windies tour next summer.
However, if it allows SCCC to make a tidy sum of money that can then be ploughed back into our CC squad and - in the case of this competition - gives the younger players a taste of a higher standard of cricket than games with most of the English counties that can provide (so helping to improve their games) then that's very welcome indeed. Equally, if this puts the club on the map a bit more, commercially, then that too will be welcome.

Watching yesterday’s game was probably the best day of the season for me. What I loved was how so many of the team made what appeared to be match losing performances, & followed them up with outstanding match winning ones. That really does show the true mentality of the team. Are they much better when not labelled favourites for things? And when you look at who didn’t play last night, there’s no more experience in Jones, Waller,Snell & Gregory either. Arguably, Dockrell is one of our most experienced international cricketers!!
It all started disastrously when Trego who with RVDM has been our best player so far, managed an over, zero & out. Mr reliable failed & other than RVDM, would anyone else be able to take it up? Btw Alf obviously deserved MOM but in my eyes Craig was our true saviour. Compare our innings yesterday to the disaster at Lords just a few weeks ago. Once again we started crash, bang, wallop but this time the players better assessed the wicket as the innings was progressing..they realised what an OK score would be and set about getting it, although it was hard work. Craig had the maturity to change his natural game to this end. No getting quickly to 20 and playing one big shot too many as in the T20 and CB40 finals..but a really sensible classy out of character knock that in the end proved the difference. Well batted.
If our lads keep winning and get more exposure, surely there is the possibility that BR could be faced with finding at least half-a-dozen replacements for the first half of the season, so that will take care of most of the profits from this jaunt!

Id agree with it. Winners of the first semi have to fly to the new venue and play their first match on the wicket there. Winners of our semi will have no travelling after the match and will already have some knowledge of the ground conditions.
According to his Twitter account Craig has just arrived in Chennai, so presumably he will be available for selection for the s-f and final if we get through....

If I'd had an address or the time, I'd have written to Radio Five this morning. On their early morning sports bulletins, from 5.30 onwards, I found out that the Chelsea manager might stay there 10 years (bet he won't!), and that Crewe had beaten Macclesfield in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, but not that Graham Dilley had died, that Somerset had reached the Champions League semi-final or, indeed, anything about the Rugby League Premiership Final this coming Saturday.
Another good comment on the CLT20 - not the coverage back home, but the way the competition has been organised to favour the host nation. Also an alternative for those wanting audio live coverage on Saturday.

I suppose if we beat both Indian side we also stuff the BCCI a little more. An organisation who have gone out of their way to make this a tournament where the Indian sides get all the glory by fiddling the fixtures and influencing the media coverage.
There has been comment suggesting that 20 20 cricket has devalued the game in the Caribbean. But anyone who has watched Trinidad and Tobago in the Champions League must have been impressed with their never say die attitude and their desperately unlucky defeats by the narrowest of margins.
Compared to the shambolic efforts of the West Indian national side, T and T offer real hope for the future. Ironically it is a BICC organised competition that threatens the predominance of the IPL and enhances club cricket worldwide. Something that the evil monopoly of the ECB must really, really hate.

I'm not sure the BCCI 'enhances' club cricket. I think the rise of some no sub continental clubs has been in spite of the BCCI. We aren't supposed to be where we are and T and T were damn unlucky.
We were supposed to stagger off the plane 24 hours after the CB40 final and act as qualification fodder for Kolkoata to justify getting more Indian sides into the real CL tournament. That was the BCCI plan.
The only other club sides they wanted in the final mix were possibly Sri Lankans and of course the Aussies because they desperately want to beat them every chance they get and the only place they can really do it is on Indian soil. They may still yet come a cropper against avery strong NSW side in that plan as well.

T and T are an excellent T20 side. I backed them at what seemed generous odds of 11 to 1 to win this tournament. Fool and his money and all that, though I think they were slightly unfortunate.

My reading of this article suggests that the Indians (the populace, not the Mumbai cricketers) seem to think that a "lack of aura" in the Somerset team makes them a surprise package in the semis. Perhaps the reliance on aura is indicative of some of India's cricketing difficulties generally!

We've done Ok on the slowish pitches of Hyderabad, so hopefully the Chennai pitch will pose no problems.

We've done Ok on the slowish pitches of Hyderabad, so hopefully the Chennai pitch will pose no problems.

One wonders what would have happened had the Chennai Super Kings, the other team for whom a 'home semi final' was set in stone, won their group thus qualifying to play their semi against Bangalore. Would the match have taken place in Chennai (group topper's advantage), would they have tossed a coin to decide it, or maybe played 20 overs at each venue.
Or would they have altered the semi final line up so Bangalore slotted into the group winner's position in the semi finals, relegating the winner to second place and off to Chennai to play the Super Kings. Maybe fortunately we will never know. I have my suspicions.
Oh, and by the way, according to the Cricinfo CLT20 pages Somerset have FIVE slow left arm spinners in their available squad. Did someone mention cloning somewhere?

I doubt NSW will have enough, Tumbles. Dilshan as MoM, I reckon. Remarkable figures.

I think NSW are on the way to another 200+ score. If they get Gayle & Dilshan then RCB will crumble.

A wonderful knock by Warner today, but the fact that he can switch so easily from left handed to right handed must surely bring forward very quickly the time when the LBW rule will be altered to mean that the reverse sweep or shot will also bring in the LBW opportunity.

Warner's six was hardly a reverse sweep - it was a right-handed lofted on-drive straight out of the MCC coaching manual - apart from the switch of feet and hands before the shot, of course. Blimey - I'd swear one of his straight sixes just now was a thick edge as he was aiming over cow corner.

Naxxer - yes the ECB Chairman does have connections with the club - we were his springboard option to the position he was actually after :-)

I fervently believe that this should happen.
Big total for NSW, albeit a smaller target than RCB were presented with the other day.
Nope I'm talking of officials at the ECB who have home county connections vastly outnumbering those with connections with the provinces and influencing what is seen as important and not important in that august organisations' media plan.
Giles gives me the impression that he plays politics and will travel wherever the easiest path takes him to get what he personally wants. If that is for the good of cricket then all well and good. If that gives something to Somerset I'm sure he isn't aainst that happening as well.
But I don't see his influence going very far at the moment if an official from the club had to ring up the ECB and demand they provided some coverage of the tournament on the main English cricket organisations website.

I agree it was a wonderful skill and shot, but my point is 'HE MUST ALSO LIABLE TO BE LBW because his leg side becomes his off side when he switches. Otherwise, by the same token why shouldn't a right arm bowler run up and suddenly bowl left arm without telling anybody (if he can do it).
Well you could argue the ECB are really only concerned with the national team these days and that any English club in this tournament wouldn't get great support from them

Yep you are probably right but I just don't see it being ignored as fully if one of the sides in there was nearer to Lords.

Not disagreeing, ob, it's just that Tumbles had said (or implied) that it was a reverse sweep.
The only way we will know I guess is if Surrey, Middlesex, Essex etc reach the tournament next year...
