The Dragons of Glamorgan are the opposition tonight and we keep the faith with the unit that comprehensively beat Sussex on Friday evening. This includes Mark Turner who possibly bowled the most expensive first over of a T20 at Taunton in that match going for 25 (mostly from the bat of Matt Prior). We hope for better tonight because it was the only glitch in an almost perfect T20 viotory.

That is the side for tonight. Peter Trego has popped off to roar with the Lions and Arul will be in for him. Mark Turner maintains his position and it looks like he will open the bowling as Glamorgan have won the toss and chosen to bat. Max Waller might have been my choice I have to say but I suppose the spin option might have been over played with that given that it is cooler this evening and overcast to boot.
Glamorgan field a changed side with Owen replacing Harris, Ashley replacing Cosker and Waters replacing Tait. The welsh did try hard to get an international sub for Tait after his call-up but time worked against them and therefore they must see themselves as a weaker side than they have been. WE MUST NOT make that same assumption and we MUST hammer them if we get the opportunity.
The crowd is about 4,000 as the game starts, it's cooler and the sun is behind heavy cloud. The frequency of these games may be taking its toll.
Alfonso Thomas is going to open from the OP to a cheer. Allenby faces and leaves the first. Cosgrove is the Dragon at the other end. The VC keeps him down and lo and behold, ball 4 he swipes at one and Mark Thomas takes the catch 0 for 1 after 4 as Allenby tries badly to pull a ball to Cow Corner. Maynard is in but they crossed and Cosgrove gets them off the mark. Excellent first though 1 for 1.
Phillips opens his account from the River and goes for 10. Mark takes over for the third and goes for a creditable 10!! 21 for 1 after 3. Ben stays on and after Cosgrove takes a 'quick' single (is there such a thing for the man mountain that is Mark C?) Maynard wafts at his next and gives Buttler his first catch of the game 22 for 2. Just waving at a ball that climbed and off he goes. This brings in Capitan Dalrymple who loosely plays at his second delivery and nearly plays on because of it.
Ben goes for 2 and a wicket and looks like he means significant business tonight. 2 boundaries either side of Jos gives them another 10 off Turner and 33 after 5. Pollard takes the River for number 6 and withthe help of tenacious close fielding keeps the Glams in their places for the first half. Cosgrove does cut loose with a boundary but everything else is scrambled and they only get 6 in the end.
Marcus keeps Turner on at the OP (he's seeing something - not sure what) and the young man gives his boss what he asks for 5 sttraight balls, mostly fielded with passion by the man himself and a short ball that tucks Cosgrove up. They go to 41 - good over. Alf changes ends and has them scampering for a run as he goes around Cosgrove, spins and takes out the wicket but with the Welsh boss home. I wonder what would have happened if it hadn't have been Cossy he had to get around :-) Nevertheless he keeps them to 45 after 8 and we introduce spin.
Kartik is bowling from the OP for the first time in this competition but he still insists on bowling in sunglasses despite the fact that there is absolutely no sun. Cosgrove brings up the 50 off a misfield (bobble) and it is 52 after 9. Zander is on for the 10th. Cosgrove dismisses him with a hefty smack into the boards in front of the scoreboard but Dalrymple tries clever flips and Thomas takes a running catch in front of the OP - 58 for 3. In comes Brown and it is 59 at halfway.
Spin continues and when he is on target they are finding him difficult to get away. A wayward loose delivery and a couple of singles is it for the 11th. The Glamorgan guys reckon Brown is the worst player of spin in the Welsh side. However, they also mention that Cosgrove is never this sedate - so he smashes the first two balls of ZdB's next over to the boundary. Brown follows suit later in the over and it becomes a productive one for the visitors moving them on to 77 at the end of it.
Kartik tempts Brown up the pitch to reverse sweep with his first of the next and he is stumped with aplomb by our Grocklee. 78 for 4. It is such a daft shot! Next man in. Next man out caught behind. Bye bye Gareth Rees. Well bowled Murali Kartik. Wallace faces the next and squirts it out into the infield to foil the third hatrick attempt of the last four days. The spinman completes the over with 79 on the board.
Turner returns at the River end to Cosgrove....could be interesting. He keeps the big man quiet (with some help from the man himself) for 4 and then gets carried away and gives him a short long hop which becomes the first six of the innings into the Priory Bridge car park. the two he takes off the next ball gives him his 50 off 41 balls with 6 fours and a six. A last ball full toss gives Glamorgan a four and Turner figures of 9 an over. Wallace doesn't stick around though as Kartik bowls him with the second ball of the 15th at 92 for 6. Robert Croft is next in with a big job to do with the stalwart Cosgrove who is keeping this innings together. He turns his first around the corner and takes a rare 'quick' single between these two veterans. Cosgrove goes big towards the Caddick pavilion and he really should have been caught by Mark. He gets there well and everyone thinks he has caught it but it drops directly in front of him and he doesn't get his hands under it. Nevertheless Kartik ends with excellent figures of 4 overs no maidens 18 for 3 so he has done his job this evening. He also keeps them to 97 after 15, well played sir!
Pollard provides the ball that Crofty sends to the boundary to bring up three figures for his county (and country) in the 16th which ends at 105. My prediction of a score of 165 for 7 is looking very optimistic but would be a hell of a batting display if it comes off. Alf makes the wickets more like it by getting Croft LBW with his second ball of the 17th - 106 for 7. It's 109 for 7 at the end of the over from the leading wicket taker in this competition with 21 to his name. After a big over for Cosgrove who takes 17 off KP with two sixes into the scoreboard, Alf gets his third in his 6th consecutive game by having Owen caught behind at 126. He nearly has Ashley two balls later which would have been 8 for 4 but he fails to make contact. A single off the fourth finds him facing Cosgrove who he nearly yorks and he has a single from the last to finish with 3 for 11 - his best of the season. Brilliant.
KP bowls the last - except he doesn't release the first ball at all. They take a single off the first and when Cosgrove skies the second Ben takes him in front of the CA. 75 off 54 makes his county's score respectable. But what would it have been without his 75 off 54 balls? Jos mireads a ball from the big man next and it veers past him for 4, Keiron then tries a slow bouncer which Ashley manages to swat over the top before the man gets his revenge by belting one in to take out his off stump and finish the Weslh off at 138.
Tight bowling display with really excellent figures from our spinner and that man Thomas. Should we get these? Hmmmm......

Marcus and Nick are out there quickly and Robert Croft opens for the Dragons. They both take singles before the captain flicks one straight into Allenby's hands for a single. 2 for 1 - very careless I'm afraid and the early impetus to the Welsh. A good first over from the ageless spinner.
Waters is taking the ball from the River end as the complete replacement for Tait and Compton faces a first ball wide (maybe not the complete replacement then)! But the two opening bowlers are keeping it up there and find Hildreth equal to the test as he straight drives a yorker length ball to the Botham to end the second on 8 for 1.
Croft does not maintain his OP position, Owen replaces him and his first is plonked into the SKY compound behind the scoreboard by Compo. So double the score at the end of the over 16 for 1. Ashley is the fourth bowler used and Hildy shows him where the boundary boards are in front of the Caddyshack with his first delivery. His third goes the other way to the Somerset Stand over the despairing hands of Cosgrove. Ball four pierces the Caddick stand side once again 29 by the end of the 4th - shame it wasn't 32 and then 64 after the 5th with victory arriving early in the 7th becauise of mathematical progression. Hildreth isn't waiting around though as he takes a four off the first ball of the fifth from Owen before following it up with another in the middle and we have 38 after 5.
This brings Croft back at the River as the youngsters get a bit of tap. Hildreth seems in total control but Compo doesn't look so certain and maybe they are hoping to get him before he settles and keep the wickets falling. The Somerset boys seem to be aware of this though and just keep whipping him into the mid-wicket area and taking singles. Waters has moved to the OP with the Croft change. We have 42 and they want at least another wicket before we get to 50. The next ball goes through the hands of FOUR fielders before finally getting back to the stumps...not the way to do it boys! 48 after 7.
Glamorgan now try keep the Somerset batsmen in their crease and it is Allenby's medium pace with Wallace standing up. Compton brings up the 50 with a cover driven two halfway through the 8th and takes the pair to a 50 partnership off his next scoring shot. It's 53 for 1 after 8. Brown takes the next from the OP with Somerset needing 86 from 72 balls. Compton tries the flip over the keeper from ball one but fails to connect. In fact he doesn't get a single until the fourth ball while his partner multiplies that by four with the fifth to Cow Corner and adds another guided boundary with ball six. Confidence does wonders doesn't it? 62 for 1 after 9 becomes 70 after 10.
Ashley starts the second half of our innings and although Nick is connecting with lots of balls, they are all going to fielders and he's getting singles instead of boundaries. One gets the feeling that we may see KP a little earlier if one of these two should fall.
We may need him as well as that 11th only goes for 4. Croft remains at the River and is reverse swept for four by Compton. He tries it with the next ball but doesn't connect and that's how it continues as we move to 82 with 8 overs to go. It's slow but on target at the moment.
We could do with a BIG over and Compton looks to move it on off Ashley but again gets only the bottom of the bat and a single. A run a ball will not see them home but it keeps the score ticking and we are very close to that rate but the opposition are fielding like terriers and boundaries are difficult to come by presently. While trying to get over the top, Hildreth drops short and is caught in the midfield by Allenby and in comes......Pollard. 85 for 2.
Ashley tries to bounce him with his first ball but to be honest no-one could hit the ball he bowls, though that doesn't stop KP having a go! Crofty stays on at the River for over number 14 with the objective of keeping Pollard off strike one would imagine. That lasts two balls before the big man is down there smacking the bail into the pitch to make his mark. Respect is shown to ball number 1 he receives from the ex-international and he scoops a single of the second.
Then we get a little bit of ‘rot’ setting in as Compton goes to Ashley stumped at 88 and in comes ZdB. He nearly continues the rot with a skied ball that is first of all called for by the keeper and then dropped by the man!! They scrabble a single. We then see why we have this man Pollard on our books as 89 for 3 becomes 95 for 3 then 101 for 3 and then 107 for 3 in THREE balls as Pollard takes Ashley to the cleaners in the 15th and puts the Somerset ship back on course. These are BIG shots.
Allenby is back on for the 16th and a flashed four starts the over before a single get the West Indian on strike. Brave bowling yorks him – a brilliant full length ball from the Dragon and he’s gone for 19 off 8 balls having done exactly what was asked of him. 112 for 4 halfway through the 16th. Jos Buttler arrives and we need 24 from 4 at the end of the over.
With some scampering and guided boundary balls we find ourselves needing 10 off 12 and with a boundary and singles from each man we beat Glamorgan by 6 wickets with 8 balls to spare.
Another stonking performance from the bowlers backed up by solid work from the batsmen!! This looks so much better than a couple of weeks ago!
A "Man of the Match" award for Alfonso Thomas to go with his WORLD record in the T20 after 6 consecutive matches where he has taken 3 wickets at 10 apiece. Awesome work and well deserved honours - he just keeps getting better.
With Alf in control in the bowling with support form his team mates with the ball and Hildreth in control with the bat and equally able support from HIS batting team maes we are really looking good now.

First thing we need to do is beat Glamorgan otherwise they will be on the same points as us.

Very sound win.
Very solid and comprehensive defeat of the Welsh and it never really looked anything but certain.
Brilliant from Thomas and Kartik. Totally in control from Hildreth and de Bruyn and absolutely devastating but far too short from Pollard.
The only guy who scratched around a bit was Compo and even he made 40.
If we can take this into the second half of the season we are really contenders in absolutely everything. It's a good place to be at the moment and a pleasure to watch them play.
Meanwhile, folks, on the `Old Boys` thread there are - yes - a self-same eight postings on matches involving, if I could put it frankly although in no way meaning it literally or derogatorily, a trio of Somerset yesterday`s men.
And crossover posters number just two.
Time and a place for everything.
We rip them to bits if they underperform and are singularly absent if they start to get it together.
It's the same with our old boys. I can't remember many threads demanding the inclusion of Wes when he was here until the IPL. Where were they for the other 9 years?
It's great to see him doing so well but I still suggest that the galvanising point is his loss of a county contract and no-one has yet suggested (I don't think) where he would fit in our present side - he was NOT an alternative to Compo or Langer and was never suggested as one.
The obsession with Ian is beyond a joke now. Kartik has replaced his bowling and Jos, Peter, Zander and James more than make up for his late years batting. He is a different player with a different county and better for it.
As far as Steff is concerned he has made another career for himself but why don't we have the same obsession about Gareth?
We have good stuff happening AT OUR GROUND with OUR PLAYERS.

As for comments that appear on the 'Old Boys' thread however, I don't see anything there (recently at least), that reflects anything other than a genuine interest in ex SCCC players.
Mike & LoL happened to mention IDB's score, (so what ?!) but that obviously represents an "obsession" & they clearly shouldn't have done so !
What on earth else would you expect to see on an Old Boys thread ??!!!
And as for "ripping them to bits if they underperform" Grockle, I'm not sure who you had in mind with that comment, but your own 16 June 20.42 contribution on the 'The Eagles have turned up' seems to fit your description pretty well.
Lighten up guys. I'm sure everyone is pleased at our recent efforts, but if we're going to resort to getting in a huff if people do (or don't) post as we would like them to, the forum will be much the poorer place (in my humble opinion).

Those who are invariably critical of the team and the management have been notable only for their absence recently.
I hope FE feels able to rejoin us at some stage, as he was always a real supporter, and critical only when it was unavoidable.
I agree with most of Grizzzly's points.
Grockles' summaries of individual players are surely spot on, but I don't think anyone would disagree, would they?
Speaking of the Old Boys thread, I wish to state quite categorically that I am not obsessed with Chesterfield Mum.
I left for work just after 08.00, had no lunch and got home at nearly 18.00, and was out for a meeting at 19.00. Back in at 23.15 and able to watch a bit of our reply.
Have to manage business, recruit new staff, train new staff, do the jobs of old staff and sort out hernia repair.
Please forgive me if I'm not immediately on the laptop, but guys I was once again delighted with the victory.
I just wonder if the demise of our national football team might have helped?
Either way, let's hope it continues for the last three home games so that the boys can count on some fantastic Taunton support.
If Pollard gets in and stays then that really would be something to see...hope it happens I really do.
Lets not get carried away though, we've won nothing yet but lets say we have put the solid foundations in place and are building on them.
We may even get Kieswetter back next week too for a bit although his contributions this season have been disappointing.
All in all I have a warm glow feeling at present and long may that continue.

Of course we knew it already but Pollard really can clear the boundary with little trouble (and was out blocking, not being over ambitious).
Everyone else just batter well and very sensibly, I would not want to have to play against Somerset.

When they underperform I say they underperform but please look through the posts and you'll be able to quote (with time and date I'm sure) an opposite view with my name on it when they play well
No one is asking people to rush home from their lives and get on the net to say how wonderful we are - and as stated we have won nothing yet. There are however "regular" posters in times of woe who seem to be really busy with other things in better times.
I simply wish some of those who bristle found their lives as full when the side does not do its job properly. They seem to manage to juggle their laptop time with other commitments when that is the case.
But early days and silverware is a long way off so maybe we shouldn't get too excited. The glass may actually be half empty :-)

What I did feel was out of kilter last night (and worrying so) was that two-and-a-half hours after our fourth T20 win in a row, the number of `live` posts on the match thread was exactly equal to yesterday`s postings about matches involving former players.
This is the sort of t20 I could grow to like; it not only entertained with the bat but also with the ball.
I have just managed to read Grockle’s very comprehensive report (I don’t know how he does it).
All the team played their part with bat/ ball and fielding, although Marcus failed with the bat he must take credit for being the captain of the team.
Jos gets a mention for his wicket keeping that seems to be improving and his batting is always handy.
The batsmen Compton, Hildreth, De Bruyn, and even Pollard who for the short time at the crease got the RR down deserve praise for their effort.
The bowlers, we do seem to have a very good one day bowling attack we never used Arul he wasn’t needed. Thomas has taken three wickets six times in a row this is a record, the previous record was four.

Although I took it a bit early (I can’t see the ball) it is G Rees ct Buttler bld Kartik.
J Dalrymple avoiding the ball from Thomas, Thomas seem to be getting better and better.
This may have been the first time I have seen M Cosgrove close up, and he made an instant impression with the bat although he didn’t time the ball early on.
Turner did cause Cosgrove a few problems with a short ball.
Grockle commented on Marcus’s get out shot and here it is, I will not make any comment.

There is definitely no thought at all of deleting it
Something that hit me during the game was that JL could have possibly learned something from Cosgrove's performance about the different aspects of a cricketer. Physically big he might be but he has the heart and commitment to his county that kept them in the game with bat and in the field last night. For his wieght to be an issue you have to get the ball past him and that was significantly difficult!

We have Lett, Jones, Meschede who all seem good players to me and the club seem to think they will be the next generation and have plenty of ability. To make room for them people have to move on and that is what has happened. I would hope we would try to add one ot two domestic bowlers and see where we get to. I think its part of running a county club.

I may be wrong, but I do not believe that the total that Glamorgan made has EVER before been a winning total, batting first, in a T20 game at Taunton?
Therefore, it is hardly unreasonable that folks would focus on the excellent performance in the field, is it?
It's always inevitable that more will be said if things are going awry than when they are going well. Why? Because there are only so many ways of saying "well played," whereas, when the team loses, it's not that there are many ways of saying "badly played," it's that people want to try to make suggestions of where we are going wrong and what ameliorative action may be taken.
Not, I think, a difficult question to answer.
Jonah played lots of games, including some very strong match-winning efforts.
Gareth did not appear in a huge amount of games, by comparison.
Not to mention that both Wes and IDB have done rather better, thus far, since they left than Gareth has since he left.
Unfortunately my false teeth and glass eye fell out when I tried to get my tongue around a-m-e-l-i-o-r-a-t-i-v-e!

And to infer from the fact that not many contributed postings during the course of another very successful T20 match that any of us is not interested in and enthused by our currently outstanding form is somewhat sweeping. Some of us have other things to do with our lives; others may have simply been enjoying being away from their computers on one of the balmiest nights of the year.

The performances of Jonah and IDB that were commented upon yesterday came in CC matches.
Very Pleasing overall however with two or three individuals excelling.

I go back again to the what a revelation the bowling has been this season. Without the talisman of Caddick (and to a lesser but significant extent Willoughby) our not too favoured and aging pace attack has held its own in the Championship and more than contributed in the shorter formats. The arrival of a wicket taking spinner has added another dimension and with the only significant 'bit' bowling contribution coming from Zander really it has been largely the work of both Phillips and Thomas that has held this season together for us.
That and the improved consistency of Hildreth and Zander plus the exciting propect that is Jos Buttler have got my taste buds all a quiver for the second half of the other competitions.
It could all go horribly horribly wrong but at the moment the movement seems to be in the right direction.
Should Willow and Arul have benefitted from their rest, Nick C gained a little more confidence for the formats he is more suited to, Peter and Craig come back from their international jaunts with revived batting form and Marcus find his feet for the second half and we could be in for interesting times.

I'll go off and double-check but I'm fairly sure that the figures show that he has a good number of wickets.
If you simply mean that he's been better supported than in recent seasons, I would certainly agree with that.
For me, the big revelation is a fit Ben Phillips. I think he's been brilliant. Kartik has also had a great start in the CC, though tougher CC challenges than Warks minus Bell and Trott will surely await him.
There's going to be some rain for you guys out West this week but, overall, it's been such a dry six months in the UK that I will not be at all surprised if the majority of the final 8 pitches on which we will play CC cricket this season, turn out to be bunsens, quite frankly.
Charl and Alf each have 25 CC wickets. Kartik already has 21.
Admittedly, Charl has had to bowl a lot more overs than Alf for the same number of wickets.
If the recent humid weather continues, then that might well play straight into the hands of Charl when the CC resumes.
I referred to him as a 'talisman' - nagging tight line and length - that wasn't present in some of the one dayers so therefore we were 'without' that aspect of his game.

Do we want Sussex to win and probably move out of our range for No.1 slot in the Southern table, allowing for their superior run rate and the fact that we have already played them twice? Or would an Essex win help keep Sussex within our sights, but increase the competition for second, third and fourth places?

Difficult to see Essex being beaten at fortress Chelmsford, though.
We would still be on the same points with a game in hand over Essex.
If we win all our games we have in hand on both teams above us we will be in first or second spot.

I always look along Gimblett Hill as I walk through, but can't spot the handsome photographer brut they keep referring to on this thread.
