So - Somerset in India starts at 3:30 today! The outgoing captain Justin Langer is expected to move himself up the order to opener with the incoming captain and returnee to the "international" arena Marcus Trescothick. Deccan Chargers are the opposition with the mighty Adam Gilchrist, Fidel Edwards and Charminda Vaas in their squad. Big names and great experiences for the men of the county
v Deccan Chargers CT20L @ Hyderabad Saturday 10 October 2009
Hopefully the front end will be flexibly used - The start put on by Banger will be the main determinent of the game from our point of view.
Facing the likes of Gilchrist, Laxman, Vaas, Symonds, Edwards,Styris, Sharma and Rao will be a challenge and Langer will have to maintain the pace of a batting innings better than was the case in the pro40. He will open with Marcus and then use CK later for the big push. Arul will move up the order while James H will move down. The introduction of ZdB is also crucial.
Bowling wise, Charl and Alfonso should feel at home with nearly every other main South African player in this competition somewhere!! We need a good game from Ben Phillips and the support of Peter Trego and the medium pace of Zander will also be crucial. BIIIIIGGGGG game for a certain Max Waller. If nothing else comes from this tournament, the chance for young players like Max, Craig and Pete to compete against the higher calibre of cricket professionals is a great opportunity.
Deccan are at home...but then again 50% of their side isn't even Indian!! Then again they did win the IPL so we have it all to do. More at 3:30....
This game is under floodlights totally and the crowd looks big and pro-Deccan - nothing better than a cauldron type atmosphere to see what our boys are made of. Though it has to be said that our bowlers and top batsmen will have been involved in this kind of high intensity game before. Trescothick, Langer, Willoughby, Thomas and de Bruyn have all been involved in international competition before - though not necessarily in the warm humid nights of the sub continent.
The commentators suggest that the pitch is full of runs and is rock hard. Justin has won the toss and decided to bowl first because he says it's worked for them up to now. The crowd seems happy that Deccan will face first - I'm worried! But we don't know much about this so it's all to play for. JL looked happy and was very complimentary about his side. Vaas won't play for the Chargers.
Laxman and Gilchrist will open and it's down to the Somerset batting guys to chase down whatever the Chargers put in front of them. Good to see the county badge on the TV rather than some 'Sabres' logo. We are Somerset. We are a county. We are not some mish mash of players who meet to play a tournament. We are a team irrespective of whether we lose to this bunch. This is a team building exercise,. This says we are seen as something more than just an English side. We have international credentials and it's time to show we believe it ourselves.
Marcus is on the pitch!! - Brilliant to see and worth the event on it's own!!
Charl to open against the man he faced not three weeks ago at Taunton - VVS Laxman - on a huge ground half way around the world in front of about a 60% capacity crowd. Laxman is off the mark with the first. Great to see Blackacre Farm Eggs on the shirts and not covered over with bits of masking tape!! Lots of chatting and buzzing in the field and almost the first wicket off the last ball of the first as Laxman hits one in the air to mid off and just out of the reach of Phillips. 10 off the first.
Thomas to Gilchrist for the second over and the ball nips back in to the ex-Aussie wickie first up....late swing is a good sign for the man of the moment. He has Laxman playing circumspectly and flashing hard as well. 17 for no loss after two. This tournament has big scores and batsmen going for it. Good bowling ALL the time is needed.
The commentators reckon we have about 24 thousand in the ground and they are making a lot of noise. The commentators think that 180 ish is a decent score on this pitch. BIGGG ask but probably good that we have decided to chase. Somerset look very sharp in the field - let's hope that continues.
But it doesn't as Gilchrist shows what he's made of and takes 16 out of 17 off Charl's second over and end on 34 after 3 - 200 plus total at this rate of 11 and over!! Welcome to the big boys T20 CW. This is worrying...unitl Alf steps up and gets Gilly top edging one into the air to Marcus who pouches the ball and is VERY up for this. Faster ball (143 Kps) and it's 35 for 1. In comes Suman.
The fastest 50 of the tournament is up at 11 an over in the 5th - Charl is still on after being murdered in his second over but he holds them to 10 and 51 for 1 25% of the way through this. Can we chase 200+ down? Well if you wanted to put your faith in our main ability it would surely be in our batting. But 8 fours and 1 six in that front end will make the job very difficult.
Phillips is on for the sixth and goes for four clipped by Laxman off his first - welcome Benjamin! nevertheless Ben has his own statement to make as he gets Suman caught behind by his new captain for 6 and it's 59 for 2 with Symonds in at four. Laxman is flashing at the ball, out of character but getting runs. Symonds is away though with a guided four off his first to take his side into 63 for 2 by the end of the 6th. End of the Powerplay.
Trigger comes on for Willow and goes for 10 and then Phillips has Symonds flashing and nearly going to Trego who stops the ball but has the ball bounce just in front of him. The rate is still very high though but Phillips is still asking questions. Lots of comments about Trigger's tattoo on the telly.
Wicket 3 to Trego! Andrew Symonds goes for 8 caught by Hilda as he tries to smash it over the infield. 80 for 3 and the rate is coming down to about 9 but Laxman is still there. Marcus reckons this is a 180 pitch but why oh why is he wearing TWO caps? Phillips nearly has another as Sharma flips one between a wide first slip and the keeper while the commentators are talking to Banger. 86 for 3 after 10 and the pick of the bowling is from Phillips up to now.
Then we get the important one - Laxman to the big man Pete Trego! That is a real wicket and great cricket - beautiful slower ball. 4 overs 19 for 2 to him and 10 dot balls with only singles coming in the mid sector of the innings. The press is on and the pace is off the ball as Zander is in to Scott Styris. Sharma isn't getting the ball onto him and with 14 overs gone it's been pulled back to 99 for 4. Good work by the middle men.
In comes Willoughby for the 15th (hmmm?) and up comes the 100 with a straight drive from Styris. Good straight bowling from the guys with a good number of yorker length balls to keep the men in their creases. Three quarters of the way in and it's 106 for 4 - much better than you would have predicted after the first 5.
Styris breaks out though with a huge straight six off Zander but once again his middle pace is harder to get away although Sharma also smashes him over the covers. These two are looking to push the score on but in doing so Sharma finds Thomas coming in from the boundary and it's 118 for 5 and Zander also does his job. In comes Rao - one of those promising Indians who seems to have gone off the international radar after being sold as one of the new stars of sub-continental cricket.
Thommo is back for the 17th and is still looking dangerous and they aren't getting them away. Singles are fine and Alf is bowling a good length. But who will bowl at the end? Long length to Styris and it's on the toes and given out LBW 121 for 6 and this is a really really good pull back from a big start for the opposition. Can the batsmen finish this one off? They've shut the crowd up that's for sure. In comes Singh. Looking at the replay, Styris was a bit unlucky (going down to leg) but who the hell cares?
122 for 6 after 17. Thomas 17 for 1 off 3 and Zander will finish his lot with Ben to take one of the last 2. Rao sixes ZdB and then takes a boundary off the next but our man comes back with a really good Yorker and finishes with 34 for one wicket. (27 came off his last 2 with only 7 off his first half.) 136 for 6 and 150 is on.
Phillips takes the 19th - big over for us - and Langer sorts out his field. First ball is fired straight over his head for 6 by Rao. Better second ball goes for one. Ben gives him a yorker and knocks his off stump all over the place. 143 for 7 - really good third ball to the tail ender. In comes Fidel Edwards.
Ball 4 is hit off his toes and he takes the single to put Rao back on strike. Phillips got some swing on that wicket ball. Rao tries to hit another out of the ground and goes to Hildreth 144 for 8 and bye bye Rao. 7 balls left as Ojha arrives at the crease.
The last ball is a single and Thommo will deliver the last 6 with 145 up and two new men at the crease. Ball 1 to Edwards for 1 - squirted off his hip. Ball 2 - left handed Ojha - single to midwicket. Ball 3 sees Edwards smashing the ball for four through extra cover. Good hit and 150 on the board. Ball 4 Edwards tries to pull him and misses. Ball 5 is 'chinese cut' through to Craig. Last ball is a wide so it isn't the last ball but Ojha is run out at the non striking end and it's 152 for 9. Harmeet Singh is in and they run a single 153 for 9.
The commentators don't think that is enough. They've done really well. Excellent bowling from the boys after a shaky start good lines and good length with some really good pressing from Trigger and Zander in the middle and some good work by Ben but Alf looked wonderful. Good solid fielding as well - not something we've seen in other games. I'm happy with that but we need a good start in our innings.
Here we go Edwards to Trescothick - a no ball full toss and the first warning as it comes out of his hand. Langer gets his first run off some tidy fielding which breaks the stumps. Edwards is bowling at 152 Kps!! But his short ball is just flipped over the slips for 4 by the Somerset man. Fidel is banging it in short to our man. ball 5 is driven for four by the Mighty man. 12 off the first one.
Singh is looking for swing at the other end and his first is full to Banger. He keeps the ball up for half an over and has the opener watching. Then he gives him a loose one and gets flipped for four. Unfortunately though he has another abll to come and Marcus gets a top edge on that one and a skier is taken by Gilchrist!! DAMN! And what brain decided to send ZANDER in at 3!!! Don't you lot learn anything from the Pro40? Langer and de Bruyn do not push on!! Though he does flip the first down the leg side for 4!!
25 up after 3 with a pretty poor second over from Edwards. Harmeet Singh is on for the 5th with us at 35 for the loss of one. Justin has gone into this one with the policy of 'hit it or get out' and Zander is following his captain's lead. they push the score on better than they have in the past but just as they get to 50, Zander goes t an excellent catch from a retired wicketkeeper who would keep some of the international blokes out of their sides if he was still playing. It was a big edge and Gilchrist was across and diving to catch the ball from Singh. 50 for 2 and in comes Craig.
Then Singh bowls to the skipper and he golf shots him to the mid on fielder and goes for 15. 51 for 3 and a minor collapse with Singh having 3 for 17 off 3 overs. Ojha the spinner is in to our wickie. 54 for 3 after 7 - up to the rate but two new boys in and the crowd getting up for it again.
Wierd part of this game is the commentators talking to the umpire who is not at the stumps!! How is that allowed while the game is on?
Gilchrist seems to have decided that the slow men are getting the results and his spinner and medium men are knocking the score down - 4 off the last over so 58 for 3 with 8 down. Kieswetter is taking the men on coming up the wicket. He does it again and mistimes it to put it into a H.Singh's hands on the boundary. 59 for 4 and the commentators are saying we look shakey.... how right they are! Peter Trego is in. OOOOOEEEEER has panic taken hold?
60 for 4 after 9 as Arul sixes the slow man into the crowd....calm Mr Suppiah, only hit the bad one. Styris is on for the eleventh with Somerset about halfway there at the halfway mark. We need 80 from 57 so the pressure is really on for the young guys but Pete sixes him when he bowls on his toes. 10 from the eleventh takes us to 81 for 4. Deccan wdere 89 for 4 at this point so this is a good even contest - we certainly haven't been outplayed in this game. Now the TV is talking to Symonds - he thinks we are under more pressure than they are and he's right as Trego skies one and goes for 12. Oh dear!
In comes James Hildreth and this one isn't over but we are the team that has to win or lose it now. It is in the balance. 90 for 5 after 12. In a one day game you'd still put your money on the batting side needing 64 off 8 - 8 an over guys! It gets difficult if one of these two goes and it is now raining!
Ohja flights one and Arul skies it to Styris!! We needed him to manage the end of this innings but he has gone and it's now a problem as Phillips arrives at 93 for 6 after 13. 61 off 7 is a BIG ask for JH and the tail. if we lose this we'll have thrown this away. Phillips walks past a straight one and is nearly stumped. Good work from the keeper Gilchrist again!! To add insult to injury Phillips snicks one to the boundary past the keeper next one up.
He then goes to a really soft dismissal flipping one straight to Symonds. A very poor and soft dismissal brings Thomas to the wicket with 55 needed from 36 balls, rain falling and us well behind on the D/L. We have thrown this one away and asking the last few guys to make this one right is not on. Rao is bowling but it is pretty immaterial to be honest unless James and Alf pull something really special out of a very deep bag! Personally I see no hope with this game even though we are 108 for 7 with 6 to go.
Having just seen the Phillips dismissal again, the look of disgust on Ben's face was just what it should have been!!
We need 40 off 30. The story is on the scorecard. 6 scores in double figures, not one over 20!!! Steady drizzle and a six from Thomas to keep us interested in this one. James then fours it to take us to within 2 runs of the D/L total. 123 for 7 after 16.
Fidel is back on for the 17th. James is facing. It's a no ball and Fidel is taken off after the ball goes well over Hilda's shoulder for the second time in the game (the first ball to Trescothick was the same). Styris will finish the over and it gives Gilchrist a problem if this game goes to the wire.
Its 26 from 20 and it is James Hildreth who will win this one for us if we win. 130 for 7 and that Fidel removal seems to have taken the edge off his side. Can we do this? Do we deserve to do this?
.......who the hell cares!! Let's just get it done.
131 for 7 23 needed off 18 balls and Gilchrist brings in Symonds - his 9th bowler - bowling slow medium. 22 off 17. 21 off 16. 20 off 15. 16 off 14 - glided four to Thomas. Cool heads please lads!!
16 off 13. 14 off 12 - great and brave running for the two.
Max is sitting there ready to come in and Singh is coming on to finish this game one way or the other. Take it easy guys please!!
Singh to Hildreth. 14 off 11. 13 off 10. Thomas flips the ball to the boundary over the infield. 9 from 9. Bouncer! 9 from 8. 8 from 7. Near bondary Leg byes! 50 partnership! 5 from 6!!
The Somerset guys were screaming for the ball to go for 4!!
Still an over to go though and 5 runs needed. Scott Styris for the last over. 2 wickets left.
Hildreth on strike. Styris bowls Hilda!! In comes Max Waller - who would be this young man?
Long off and Long on come in to save the single. Max's only objective? Get Alf on strike. Doesn't connect 5 from 4!!
Up in the air! Styris takes the catch. Max goes! 5 from 3. In comes Charl!! But Alf crossed so there is still some hope!!
Alf fires one to the boundary!!!!!! Game tied!!
1 from 2. DOT BALL!!!
1 FROM 1 Well played Scott Styris but Alf hits the ball for FOUR!!!
AHHHH Jesus!!!! You Beauties!!! That was absolutely brilliant.
Then should he really be going? Crit of the club not Steff.
I suppose he is still a squad member but I personally hoped that that was a positive statement about his future at Taunton not a plan to use him as a "filler".
Is this another bit of "OLD NEWS" that the BBC has dragged up.
I am sure it is at least three weeks old.
Give the guy a break, let him slip out of the country, without the press following him to every point. If he makes it great, if not that is fine with me and I would think most of us also.
I have just had a thought (I do get them sometime) the club keep saying that Durston and Banks contract decision will be made after this Indian trip.
I wonder if that has something to do with them being in the squad, maybe they wouldn’t be allowed in the squad if they were already no longer contracted to Somerset.
Brief preview of the competition in the Telegraph.
It seems that Sussex will be fielding 2 overseas players, and the IPL teams up to 4. As the article suggests, the playing field does seem very uneven!
I assume Somerset would have had the opportunity to sign additional overseas players though, but decided against it?
Not that I'm complaining. I think it will be beneficial to Max in particular to be able to experience such a high profile competition.
Hi all, I'm a Trinidadian and I come in peace! I posted this review of the T & T side that your boys will be facing on the Indian Cricket Fever site but it seems like this might be the place to come for banter purposes..........
The Squad (Players with international experience in bold):
Darren Ganga (C), Dwayne Bravo (VC), Samuel Badree, Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo, Reyad Ermit, Sherwin Ganga, Dave Mohammed, Sunil Narine, William Perkins, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Lendl Simmons, Navin Stewart
Fixtures
Monday October 12th - Somerset, Bangalore
Wednesday October 14th - Deccan Chargers, Hyderabad
Strengths
- A strong batting lineup packed with talent and hitters down the order. If things go wrong there is Darren Ganga and Adrian Barath to bat properly so we have all bases covered.
- Spin bowling. Dave Mohammed has a sensational 20-20 record and Samuel Badree is very difficult to get away. Sunil Narine is also a promising off spinner.
- They are the only team in the competition who are playing as a country. This is not just a job or an opportunity for them, they are representing their nation which will mean a huge amount to them. Therefore the team spirit is always excellent
Weaknesses
- Pace bowling. Ravi Rampaul is an international standard seam bowler who is good at the death but there is nobody else of a high standard to support him.
Players to watch
- The Bravo brothers. Dwayne is the best 20-20 all rounder in the World with IPL experience and Darren is an incredibly talented young left handed batsman who has been scoring runs for fun in the trials and warm up matches.

Loyal of Lhasa. You are very welcome Chris, and thanks for a very informative posting.
Let the banter commence (only I have to go out now and so I'll have to leave it to the others)
No worries. There is plenty of time for banter before the big bowl off.
I think it's fascinating that our sides actually get to face each other. I can't see it happening too many other times unless T & T get really fugged off with the WICB and go it alone.
Hi Chris.
Looks a very decent squad on paper.
I'm a big fan of Bravo, and touted him as a potential O/P for Somerset after my visit to the Caribbean in '04.
I assume it's two from the group to go through?
The only worry is that the home fans might get a little upset when it's you and us who proceed!
That would be hilarious. IPL champions sent packing by the Sabres and the Soca Warriors.
As for Dwayne Bravo, he would make a fantastic overseas player for any team nowadays. I fear he might have spoiled his chances though by the way he behaved/performed at Kent. He went there when he was a bit too young and made a bad impression, even though his talent was obvious.
He has learned a lot since then and is very popular with his IPL team the Mumbai Indians where he is one of the senior players a long with Tendulkar and Jayasuria.
Hopefully someone will see fit to give him a chance at county level again soon.
I made the same point about his Kent spell when I was touting him, Chris. Too young!
It was off the back of a lot of cricket too, wasn't it? Even to the extent that he was carrying a couple of niggles?
Yep it was on the back of a long tour during which he had played every single game, including the warm ups.
Of course he has just had a year off cricket having had ankle surgery and he didn't get to play against Bangladesh because of the players strike/WICB's stupidity.
Chris' post (no offence, sir, you're very welcome here) points out that T&T are playing as a country with no overseas (or no non-WestIndian at any rate) players. SCCC are playing as a county (plus Mr Langer, who wouldn't be many club sides' first choice as a one-day player!). Sussex are, I believe, a county plus 2 overseas players. Most of the rest are a bunch of random sides containing international and ex-international mercenaries turning up were the highest number of bucks are on offer, plus some locals to make up the numbers.
Yep T & T were given the opportunity of using Gayle and Chanderpaul as overseas players but they chose not too. The 2 IPL sides are a collection of people playing for the highest bidder. Fidel Edwards will be steaming in for Deccan Chargers, Gilchrist opens the batting with Symonds and Shoaib Malik in the middle order. It seems a tad ridiculous.
But then again T & T are like a county in a sense because the Caribbean is made up of mostly small islands. The Aussie, Kiwi, Sri Lankan and South African states, don't have overseas players so at least they are on a level playing field.
If all goes to plan we'll have two "internationals" as well Shep. Any of these sides would have our other one if he was available. It's just that our second one is home grown unless Keynsham declares independence!!
As an experience it's a great experience for the guys...as a competition? Well it's a whole hell of a lottery.
Hi Chris, I happen to be in your country this evening so this is a Trini welcome to Grockles!
Interesting competition this one, I think SP's post above describes the football Premier League just as well as this one.
I don't think that internationals vs internationals gives a true picture of the relative strengths of the teams and that is why I am confident that it will be T & T and Somerset moving on to the next round.
Yep Dave Mohammed is from south Trinidad. He is an excellent 20-20 bowler for T & T, famous for his ridiculous wicket celebrations including his shoephone celebration against Jamaica in the 20/20 final (he took off his shoe, put it to his ear and asked 'can you read me? No???' after disimssing the batsman with a googly).
Quote:
Congar Hi Chris, I happen to be in your country this evening so this is a Trini welcome to Grockles!
Fantastic? Say hello to the land of the hummingbird for me, I'm currently in the UK.
I hope you are enjoying yourself. If I may ask, how do you find yourself in sweet sweet T & T?
Perhaps the fact that our team have played as a team for several months, whereas the IPL teams just get together for these one-off events, will work in our favour. Would you, for example, back England to beat any of the top Premiership sides in football?
Under Capello? Maybe. Obviously not under McClaren.
I know what you are saying, but I think football is more of a 'team,' game than cricket, at least in the sense that when two guys are batting, it does not much matter what the other nine guys are doing (e.g. playing cards, sleeping etc).
With the likes of A C Gilcrhist and other top international stars, there are going to be certain pairings that will be very hard to stop...
Bridesmaids’ is not a tag that sits well with Peter Trego after Somerset went close but ultimately came up short in all four domestic competitions. [www.ecb.co.uk]
Top man is our Trigger,it's an absolute disgrace that he hasn't represented England yet.
I think we'll be fine against that bunch of show ponies, nothing at all to be scared of.
Get them out of the way and let's get down to some real business.
I'd except Vaas and Gilchrist from the 'showponies' label, but one or two of the others must be in line for the No 1 Showpony award. It would, of course, be invidious to mention names.
I am not sure if he is fit to play, he was due for an operation on his knee.
This was dated the 2nd October.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PC has refused to pay for a knee operation for fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar in a bid to revive his flagging international career.
Shoaib, 34, will have the operation in England next week but the PCB has said he is not entitled to treatment despite being a centrally contracted player. [tvnz.co.nz]
The Somerset Sabres comfortably won their first warm up match against Otago Volts that was played at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad on Wednesday afternoon.
After being put into bat first Otago were on the back foot right from the start when Alfonso Thomas claimed a wicket in the first over, as Hamish Rutherford was brilliantly caught by wicket-keeper Craig Kieswetter diving high and to his left.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that Somerset are playing three warm-up games, but that doesn't seem possible in the time between arriving and their first match against the Chargers on Saturday.
Edit: You beat me to it - and you actually had some information. Thanks, Mike.

Reading the report on the official site, it strikes me that Pedants Anonymous (Patron: Loyal of Lhasa) would be surprised that the players are coming to terms with the climate. They might need to be there for decades for that. I think it is the weather with which they are becoming familiar.
Mike - I think it said Tresco is not due to get there until tonight.
Interesting that, with Marcus unavailable, there was still no move to have Craig open the batting in the shortest form of the game, even though he is the regular opener in all other non first-class forms of the game.
I actually rather like the idea of Arul opening in T20.
I note that Langer says that the 'competition for a first-team place will be on,' once Banger arrives.
Does this mean that the team will actually be picked based on what people do in the warm-up games?
If so, it sounds like Langer should already be behind Arul and Zander in terms of putting his hand up for a place...
I was going from what I remember reading (If correctly) that he and his family were saying somewhere and he then would take a small trip to the ground. I can't remember the exact details.
If he was not playing for Sussex, then I highly doubt that the Otago Volts would have elected to sign Luke Wright for this tournament in the way that (I assume) they have done with A D Mascarenhas.
Something tells me that Luke Wright will be one of the least productive players in this tournament.
Dimi hasn't just been signed for this, AG.
He played the whole 50 over and Twenty 20 season for Otago in 08/09.
They reached the 50 over final but lost, and won the 20 over competition on their better record in qualifying after the final had to be abandoned.
Just been having a quick glance at tournament odds. By shopping around bookmakers, you can get the following prices:
Soms to win 16/1
Top runscorer of the tournament:
Trescothick 25/1
Kieswetter 33/1
de Bruyn 50/1
Trego 100/1
Top wicket-taker:
Willoughby 40/1
Thomas 40/1
Waller 66/1
Trego 80/1
I don't think any of the above are the most likely outcomes in each category, but I think some of them are rather more likely than the odds suggest.
Best value of all though, I think, is Suppiah to be Somerset's leading runscorer at 20/1.
(Note the rubbish punter's magpie tendency towards shiny-looking long odds; I understand that seasoned gamblers adopt more considered tactics...)
Batting order is interesting. Can JL open with MT and throw caution to the winds, making not a big score but say 20 at a runa ball. Supps at 3 JH 4 CK 5Z de B 6 PT 7 ALf 8 Big Ben9 Max 10 the mighty Charl 11. On its day that is as good a proper side as you'll find anywhere. The first 9 batsmen capable of scoring quickly 4 seamers 2 spinners Zde B and a class wicket keeper.
I'm getting excited.
When I looked at the odds, I thought the three value options were actually;
1. T & T at 22 to 1. Windies seem to be pretty good at T20, generally and they seem to have several Windies players.
2. Victoria whatever they are called at 9 to 1 - they boast all three of Cam White, Brad Hodge and David Hussey which looks a seriously high powered batting line up to me.
3.Wayamba at 14 to 1. Mainly because they have B A W Mendis.
Agree re Victoria. If I were to be placing money on this tournament, it probably wouldn't be on Somerset. Unless White counts: I think 40/1 for him to be the tournament's leading runscorer is quite generous, too.
66 off the last five overs has rescued what was looking like a low-ish total.
Cobras weren't helped by the fact that Langeveldt had to leave the field after bowling 3 overs for 12 runs, and dismissing Kallis. I'm guessing his final over would have been saved for the death?

Don't know but, either way, it's fair to assume that if it had been bowled 'off the reel,' then Bangalore would have been playing the final 5 overs from a slightly poorer position, than was the case.
p.s if conditions will be the stereotypical Indian ones with little or no help off the pitch for the seamers, then I am wondering whether our tactics should perhaps be such that Alfie is not introduced until the 14th over?
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:10:08:17:30:25 by AGod.
Yeah - it might be very sensible to have a "Plan A" which has 8 overs at the start with Willo keeping one end tight, and 8 overs at the end with Thommo doing the same. Could be the best guarantee of having some reasonable degree of control for 16 out of the 20 overs.
Jean-Paul Duminy, whose winning knock for Cape Cobras tonight is already being compared with Brendon McCullum`s effort on the opening night of the IPL, has strong West Country connections.
He played both Devon League and Minor County cricket in 2003,and also appeared for Devon in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy match at Exmouth.
I gather he still has strong links in the area, and might be an excellent bet as an alternative 20/20 overseas import for Somerset next summer, should either Graeme Smith or Cameron White fall by the wayside.
Not a bad shout that, cj-M. And given that he's one of the bright young things of SA cricket (and a potential future captain?), the board might not look unsympathetically at a short, but developmentally worthwhile assignment.
Marcus was out for 0, that does not matter he is out there that is the main thing.
Peter Trego (64) and Arul Suppiah (63) were the main contributors to a Somerset score of 219 against the Hyderabad XI in a match played under floodlights.
Then Max Waller took 2-6 from three overs and there were two wickets each for Charl Willoughby and Steffan Jones as the home side were restricted to 119
No idea AG and care almost less. I did think this competition would pitch men against boys in certain fixtures!
Surprised the Indians are suffering on their own pitches though the Indian cricket guys are effectively saying the wrong regional sides are playing on the wrong wickets (well they won the thing so they earned the right).
But they don't come up against full 'in yer face' bowling from Aussies and good fielding (though the SA's were really poor yesterday).
Not yet sure whether our domestic county sides will fare any better even though I'm really glad we didn't go down the 'pack the eleven with merceneries' route.
If we field well then we have an advantage over a number of sides here who don't seem to have any idea how to catch a ball!!
I suspect that if the IPL sides fare dismally, overall, then the rules for future competitions will be tampered with to favour the IPL teams even more than they already do.
Sorry but if this competition doesn't punish bowlers (Mishra) who take a wicket and then are filmed telling the batsmen to 'F Off' then this competition can do the same as something I want to see as an important cricket tournament.
Cheers fpr the sentiments Ged - much appreciated. It's a shame you couldn't follow your own guys last year in the same way. Can't say I'm personally expecting too much but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
Tried signing up for the eurosport player coverage at Ł3.99 a month - seems pretty good value for all of the games. Anyway, the website wasn't working - wouldn't take payments. The future's not all it's cracked up to be.
I'm sad to say I'm glad (if that makes any sense) to see Hildreth edged out of the top order, though specialist number 7 batsman doesn't sound like a role that'll last long, unless his fielding is perceived to have more value than I, at least, would attach to it (I'd rate it as creditably above average, but not match-turningly wonderful).
The front end might alter in relation to the position of the game. Fidel Edwards and Charminda Vaas plus Symonds (looks fit but is he)? Big Game for Max Waller in the middle with some medium pace support from de Bruyn. Just can't see where the wickets are gonna come from....but I've been saying that most of the year and.....Alfonso has kept coming up with them.
Looking forward to it. I'll report on the game as it happens for those not on the telly or the net.
I may be the only person to find such things fascinating but, in case not, I thought I'd mention that you can get real-time-ish Hawk-Eye output, amongst other things, here.
I think Justin has more faith in chasing than holding on this. At 11 an over presently it might not have been the more sensivble choice 50 up in the 5th and the fastest of the tournament.
Great bowling and fielding - they did especially well to pull things back after the first few overs. So far, Somerset have looked unfazed by the hype. Let's hope that continues when they get to the crease.
LoL - Eurosport 2 - you can access it through yahoo, but have to pay 3.99 to do so.
I think we bowled and fielded as well as could possibly be expected.
However, I'm not familiar with the Deccan attack, really, apart from Fidel Edwards and, to a lesser extent, R P Singh so I really would not like to say quite what our chances are...
It's got to be gettable this but we need a good start and NO SLOWING down. Zander needs to come in at about 8!! and Justin needs to push on ALL THE TIME.
Bit harsh on Zander, Grockle, after the one day season that he has had (and T20 in particular)?
I'm much more worried about Langer slowing us down.
I think it's in our best interests that Langer be dismissed before the fielding restrictions are lifted. If he's in when the field goes back, then we may have a problem
AGod: watch out for Ojha as well, he's a pretty nifty spinner. They have a lot of options, any five or six from the two Singhs, Ojha, Edwards, Styris, Symonds, Rao, Sharma and Suman.
It does look like they have learned and the 'hit out or get out' plan has to work.
Zander is fine China - batting with anyone else but Justin. But time after time this year they have got together ad the momentum has just disappeared. Maybe coming at the front of the innings has helped but they have to keep it going!!
Big opportunity for them. If we don't at least make a game of this with the bat, then I think our bowlers have every right to feel rather upset after the way they performed.
We have two of the brightest prospects in English cricket playing in our colours, on A world stage. And we're up with the rate. Why on earth are we talking about 'at least making a game of it'?
Almost chucked it away, but thanks to Max Waller getting out at the right time we got home.
Been reading some of the background stuff before the tournament and you would be forgiven for thinking that there were any other teams in it apart from the local ones.
Could just be that the visitors (us included) are going to rain on their parade. The stadium is emptying pretty quickly by the look of it.
Well done lads,great team performance.
Fonz was just unbelievable tonight with both bat and ball.
Plenty more firepower still to come with the bat as well!!!
Cricinfo An absolute entertainer, this match after three consecutive one-sided affairs - two yesterday and one today - and may we have more ones like this in the days to come.
It's 'Somerset - The Team To Watch' all over again ...
Bo - Pete's performance in the middle overs was absolutely bloomin brilliant!!
I suspect that one could count on one hand the number of times that a guy of Laxman's calibre has been so utterly confounded in his whole career. Definitely the ball of the day - by a distance.
Alf was excellent with the ball, too, obviously, and I thought Ben Phillips was very, very good and Zander bowled well for most of his spell.
Despite the figures, I don't think Charl did too much wrong, he just happened to be bowling to Gilchrist on a pretty damn good batting track ( A C G said afterwards that he thought his team were '40 short.')
It has to be said that it's a jolly good job that next year's IPL does not clash with the start of our SCCC season, because Alf will be playing in it. And after that bowling performance, Pete may very well be doing so, too.
Sent the guys a text giving Alf the freedom of every town in Somerset. I offered Taunton, Frome, Yeovil and Shepton but said he could have anywhere else he wanted.
It was interesting listening to him and remembering that he has experience of this and has played with those who have been in these situations. He quoted Jacques Kallis.
"Get it to the last over and it's anyone's!
This team did not play well with the bat.
But for those with a memory. THEY DID NOT LIE DOWN AND DIE!
Hope sprang (?) eternal and everyone supported enveryone else. Well played James Hildreth and Arul Suppiah to keep us in this. Well played the bowlers for giveing us the platform.
Hate to tell you, Grizzzly, but we lost by three runs and have just been making stuff up since then in an attempt to cheer ourselves up.
I also heard that England lost in the football, but there is clear evidence that they were wired up to the Hyderabad match and were not really concentrating on what they were being paid to do.
A wonderful, wonderful effort - and one achieved throughout with a smile on our face. We bowled and fielded with huge energy, but with humour as well. And as for Alfonso at the end, there can`t have been a cooler man in the whole of Hydrabad.
One small debating point once the euphoria has died down. Both the TV commentators, and Alfonso in this post-match interview, said Deccan were handicapped at the end by having Fidel Edwards removed from the attack by the umpires, for bowling what were obviously two waist-high deliveries.
I rather took the opposite view - that he was bowling so wildly that we had a better chance of edging a few to the boundary than from his replacement Scott Styris. Just a thought.
And another thought is that we might well not have been in India at all had it not been for that bowl-out at Old Trafford - in which Thomas featured rather strongly as I recall.
Oh yes! IPL team number 3 suffers as well. Congrats Somerset!
Of course I hope you get thrashed on Monday but I was with you 100% today.
Btw there is something in the water in Barbados that makes express pace bowlers deliver beamers. Tino Best, Kemar Roach and now Fidel Edwards have been removed from the attack in major matches for bowling beamers.
I think the second was a mixture of trying to get a Yorker length delivery first up and a damp ball but I have to agree with others Chris. I wouldn't have minded if he had bowled. he as less of a handful than Singh and that Styris guy!! What a great last over from the old warrior,.
And wasn't Gilchrist awesome behind the stumps?

I'm totally with CJM . I was gutted at the time when Edwards couldn't bowl because I thought he was our best chance of runs. We were superb. Is there anyone who thinks Willows real name is Willoughbynotoutnought. Awesome refusal to try a run off the penultimate ball. Everybody had their thinking caps on all the way through. Roll on Monday.
FE: I never said that that totally illogical rule had to apply to Somerset.
SP: I care little for the competition either, but I do care that we should perform at our best on a world stage. I'd guess you agree with me about that.
Also posted this on another thread.
Great win for you guys and a tremendous knock for my namesake (Alfie). Also good to see Marcus looking so relaxed and happy.
The great thing about good sides is they win when they underperform!
We won tonight and we weren't great.
We were a unit and we pulled together but the bowlers gave us the base to win and we almost threw it away.
Panic in the middle ranks nearly sent us away losers but we got our collective stuff together and kept at it.
If we beat T and T and come up against the likes of Victoria we are gonna need to be on top of our game and we're not there yet - but we ARE still in it so there's time.
I don't want to assume anything here, but IF we beat Trinny and Susannah on Monday, what happens next? Do we go into another league or is it straight knockout and we go on to win the 3s/- 6d (to the power of xxxxx) in the final?
Real shame it aint on local telly (not even highlights - surely RO GERMAL ONE could have done something for ITV CORNWALL_DEVON_SOMERSET_DORSET_GLOUCESTERSHIRE).
Extra liquid portions tonight on the back of that win. Considering a curry Monday night.
C'MON MY BABBIES!!!!!
The whole team showed great character - the bowlers in pegging back the scoring rate with some skilful and canny bowling; the fielders, who were alert, quick, made some good stops and catches and who - so far as I can remember - made no nervous fumbles; and the batsmen who kept us in touch - particularly Hildreth and Thomas, who put together a match-winning partnership when the odds were stacked against them.
Many more matches like that one, and this could catch on.
To the people who apparently "don't care" about this competition - you'll care all right if we beat all the odds (and all the opposition) and actually win it.
Somerset CCC World Champions would have a pretty good ring to it, don't you think? And it would be in the inaugural tournament too. Down in the history books forever, the first name on the list decades from now when T20 will (in all likelihood) have completely taken over as the major form of world cricket.
Chinaman: you're absolutely right also - I'll care when we win it, but up until that point (and in the unlikely event that we don't win it), it's a silly little money-generating exercise.
SP: OK, perhaps right now the tournament looks like "a silly little money-generating exercise". But as I said before, wait a few years and it may be genuinely THE premier club tournament everybody wants to be part of.
In my book, anything that promotes cricket worldwide and takes the sport forward can't be bad. T20's the future, like it or not.
I think that one of the great defences of T20 cricket (and I'll defend it at great length, though I won't put you through the unexpurgated version now) is that, unlike any other form of the game, it really does lend itself to relatively compact and exciting knockout tournaments. The fact that - like a soccer world cup - you can get through a couple of fixtures a day or more and ask each team to play several times a week enables a fast-paced tournament structure that can generate some real momentum.
While no one in their right mind would argue the superiority of T20 over proper cricket, we have to accept that there's absolutely no way to have the fun of a knockout tournament in the red-ball game. Moreover, I, for one, am delighted to do without the longueurs that seem inherent in 50-over cricket, both in the games themselves and in the invariably long-winded tournaments the game produces (I don't really remember much about the last cricket world cup, but I do remember that it went on for about seventeen weeks).
For this reason, above all, both the international T20 tournaments have been really engaging, I think, and this competition looks exactly the same (only more so, for those of us who share the degree of personal investment we saw on this thread yesterday). I think it's worth remembering that, for all its shortcomings as a true sporting contest, this super-concentrated format of the game enables us to have this kind of fun in a pretty unique way. Imagine the state we're all going to be in if Somerset really do get to the final...
When they were about 80 off 6 overs it would have been easy to fold and hide away. But a marvelous fightback in middle overs led by a superb Trigger gave us a total that was very reachable. Our fielding was very tight. Only remember one misfield from Craig following a wild throw from the the boundary by Willo. Our catching was very assured unlike many of the other sides I have seen in this jamboree.
Good start was followed by nervy shots in middle and wickets rather given away. Great fight back by the Emperor (who seems to have got his cloths back!) and the Fonz.
What a VERY exciting last over - Styris goes W0W but the height of the ball from Max allowed the Fonz to face the last two deliveries. Cool hardly described the Fonz - he was sub-thermal!!
A wonderful team performance and a way to put us very much on the World T20 map!! Keep it up lads - relishing Monday lready!!
hina's statement really ought to read - "T20 is part of the future like it or not."
I think some worry that China's original statement is actually true!!
I'll watch good cricket played by good players whatever the format.
Duminy's innings was beautifully constructed irrespective of the format.
The catch of Gibbs in the same match would have graced any cricket match with its presence
Alf's cool headed management of the run to a winning total was impressive because it was impressive
Peter Trego's four over spell was a good four over spell and his slow ball to remove Laxman removed a classy test batsman on a wicket that favoured the batsman - good cricket.
The problem I have is that ALL formats create those good cricketers and the skills they have.
Tests teach a player the need for technical excellence and the flexibility that allows because of the breadth of skill
One day cricket teaches players how to manage an innings or attack a batsman and what "pacing" means.
T20 is explosive and requires the use of all those skills to get the most from the ball in the least amount of time with bat or as a bowler.
Good cricket will be played at all levels by good players and Good T20 comes from the development of good long format players with the patience, skills and timing developed over four and five day games merged with an understanding of how to generate a maximum score over a time contrained session.
That is what will make T20 an accepted part of the cricket world.
If the controllers see it as the only format of the game then we will generate 'hit em and hope' baseball players facing non descript bowlers trying to bowl 24 yorkers at maximum speed with the odd slow ball to fool the idiots at the other end trying to hit the leather off it.
T20 needs Test cricket and Test cricket needs T20 and if the people who actually understand that get their way we'll have exciting short games played by great players who grace the game with their skills. Long live the T20 format - but not at the expense of the death of the rest of the game. Long live Tests as well.
This isn't intended as any criticism of anyone's posts, purely an observation; but isn't if funny how we talk about our players being hot-headed, or giving it away, or playing shots they didn't really need to, but seem keener to credit our bowlers with the dismissals of Gilchrist and Symonds? Did either of them really "need" to hit hit the big shots when they did?
Allan Donald's live commentary of Craig's dismissal gave a very interesting insight into the way in which hindsight can change the way a particualr moment is viewed. "SHOT!!!!!!!...........It's going to be caught....and it is........Not a good shot": and an over later he was describing the shot over which he momentarily purred, as stupid and needless. Fine lines, eh folks!
We could see the first IPL team eliminated from the competition in the next few hours.
It'll be interesting to see how the crowds react if that happens.

I would cite one difference here, FE.
That would be that I think it was commonly supposed that a winning score was going to be 180+. That seemed to be the opinion of both Tres and Gilchrist. The earlier game saw a team score 190+ batting first.
By the time SCCC batted, we knew full well we did not need a score of more than 180.
I do, somewhat, take your overall point, though, but I think the above explains, partly, the difference.
Grockle is of course absolutely correct in his observations here. T20 and test cricket need each other, and both are valid forms of the game.
What I wanted to express is that I am genuinely puzzled by those who seem to reject T20 as worthless. It's an exciting variant with its own set of skills, and with its TV-friendly format it provides an opportunity for cricket to expand its appeal to a wider audience worldwide, potentially reaching new countries where cricket hasn't previously been popular.
I've not been to a live T20 game, largely because I've not been in the right place at the right time, and so am in no position to comment in any great depth My impression is that a majority of games (like today's but unlike Saturday's) are far from exciting. However, the idea of watching bold batting, mean bowling and brilliant fielding certainly has its appeal and I have no doubt that the format deserves a place alongside other formats - where the very skills mentioned above will be best developed.
And I enjoy the noise of a noisy crowd... but the loud and irrelevant music would not enhance my personal enjoyment of the spectacle.
Thanks chaps. Saw those, but I don't think I can download them so that I can try to add them to what I already have.
I think the problem happened because a second recording started toward the end of the game. My Sky+ box is probably in need of a reboot as I am having problems with subtitles and other stuff.
EH, in answer to your query (about subscribing to the live eurpsport feed) on another thread, I did tick the teaser box and went through to payment, but that's where it failed, although the card and details were fine. The problem was that each time it failed it wouldn't let retry with the same email address. Once I tried 4 or 5 times, I ran out of email addresses, so gave up!
I Wondered why the game had started already when my sky+ box prompted me to turn over at half three! Useful to know, as I'll have to record Mondays game.
Coverage on Eurosport is interesting to say the least - a back to basics approach perhaps?
The same thing, of course, happened to me, Geoff. I was away last night, but was able to see the ESPN highlights, but to sit through the whole match, then miss the finale!!!!!!
I signed up with Eurosport in the middle of last week, despite repeated attempts to get in touch with them using their Contact us page, I still have not managed to be connected.

Eurosport is a terrible chanel - the start and finish times are only a rough guidleine so I think your record will have just stopped when the prog should have stopped - just have to recored the programme after next time!
First of all, I'd like to add my congratulations on yesterday's win and to admit that I gave up hope prior to Alfie and Hilda's stand,
Anyway, to the point. Is this of any financial benefit to the club ? It would be good for us if it were like the footy champions league and just qualifying would wet us up financially for the next year or two.
Whilst the players deserve any rewards they get, its the club I'd like to see benefit from this. Anyone know the details ?

The funds up to now have favoured the players rather than their clubs - not surprising as some country sides are made up of internationals employed to play this version of the game only on a yearly basis
Not sure whether that is different at this end level
I think I heard on Radio Five this morning (I was half asleep) Brian Rose say they are sponsored by a drinks company, that should cover their expense of going.
I think I would like to bat first, this time around.
The reason I say that is that I think the Windies, in recent years, have tended to fold under the pressure of chasing runs.
I also suspect that Banger might be better off batting first, in that he might be more likely to set himself to bat through most of our innings. I think if Banger does bat through most of the innings, an SCCC win is an overwhelming probability.

D Ganga*, S Badree, A Barath, DJ Bravo, DM Bravo, RR Emrit, S Ganga, D Mohammed, SP Narine, WKD Perkins, KA Pollard, D Ramdin†, R Rampaul, LMP Simmons, ND Stewart
Only player I'd want in Somerset squad is Dwayne Bravo.
Although I think Dave Mohammed has a fantastic name.
A bit worrying, and not only because we have to bat second, but because most Windies pitches these days seem to be slow and low, so they may be very familiar conditions for the T&T guys?
Seems to be a tyical Windies innings, so far, either four or bust. We've bowled an excellent number of dots but they'll probably be happy with their number of fours.
I see Cricinfo also think it's a good score on a slow pitch. Good to see Langer adapting to conditions by giving Max and Arul their full quota instead of ZdB and PT - what a great team we have!
We must go into 'tournament,' mode and think of limiting the margin of defeat... no point trying to play huge shots in the next few overs, to get up with the rate.
Apart from the wides, this attack has bowled like an international attack. I suspect this pitch is also very similar to their home tracks. We've been lucky with some lbws, in addition to the 4 we've lost.
Studying the bowling figures suggests that Willoughby and Phillips were very expensive. Probably their bowling styles are not suited to this type of wicket, or perhaps not suited to Indian wickets in general. Thomas has been far more economical in both games.
Apparently, we've forgotten (or do not care) that this group could end up with all three teams on two points and, I assume, NRR is the deciding factor?
CricInfo says Separating Teams on Equal Points
In the event of teams finishing on equal points during the Group Stage or the League Stage, the higher finishing position on the Points Table will be assumed by:
(i) The team with the most number of wins; or if equal,
(ii) The team with the highest Net Run Rate; or if equal,
(iii) The team with the higher number of wickets taken per balls bowled in the Group or League (whichever is applicable) Stage matches in which results were achieved; or if equal,
(iv) Drawing lots.
In a match declared no result, Net Run Rate is not applicable.
I hope Deccan do not bat second because, if they do, it will be complex to work out what they would need to win by (unless they lose or tie) to send us through.
No, SLC, I would think RedTauntonian's 45 runs makes more sense than 89 - that is Deccan would need to beat T&T by more than T&T beat us for SCCC to go through?
That would leave;
Somerest - 1 narrow win, one loss by 44 runs.
T&T - 1 win by 44 runs, one loss by more than 44 runs.
Deccan, 1 narrow loss, 1 win by more than 44 runs.
In this scenario, SCCC and Deccan would go through.
That's not how NRR works folks. It depends on scoring rate as well as runs scored, so it's impossible to know what margin will be needed under after the target has been set.
Net run rate = (runs scored/overs faced) - (runs conceeded/overs bowled)
Unlucky Somerset. I thought T & T bowled and fielded near the top of their games and Somerset lacked intensity with the bat. Having said that the conditions suited T & T perfectly.
It's great news for T & T that we won so convincingly when the big guns all failed to contribute properly with the bat.
Lets hope we beat Deccan and do you guys a favour. Somerset v T & T in the final
But the batting from top order let us down again for the second time in India, tres said 150 was a score with which we had a chance, not when we bat like that.
But from a positive side we bowled and fielded well.
Surely... as TT effectively are plus 44 runs, while we are -44... to swing it back, Deccan need to win by 89. So we will be minus 44, and TT will be minus 45. Now i know I did it on runs not RR, but it is effectively the same. I think!
If it were net run aggregate, you would both be right.
But it isn't. Your calculations assume that both innings will be precisely 120 balls in length.
There are any number of scenarios where Deccan can win by less and WE still go through, particularly if they bowl T&T out, because if they do, their rate conceded will plummet, as whatever runs they concede will still be divided by 40 overs.
Edit: sorry one missing word can make all this come out as gibberish.
Yes AG, Your statement that any Deccan win will send them through is correct. They cannot win and end up with a worse NRR than ours. The issue is how that win effects T&T's NRR, anmd that depends on overs as well as runs. (But not on wickets as a margin of defeat, red.)
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:10:12:16:13:13 by Frome Exile.
It's all very complicated in terms of prediction, but if Deccan are batting second it's all about how quickly they get the runs.
If they bat first, a smaller margin of victory than the 89 runs would suffice for us if they bowl T&T out.
Sorry to see you were disappointment to see the results of your flat Mike. (Only Joking) When do you move in?
But as far as the Cricket is concerned, first half was fine and I really thought we were in with a chance, but the top order once again let us down, if fact only Zander performed with the bat as you can see with from the scorecard.
I wasn't able to follow any of today's match, which was probably to my advantage, and I have decided to spare myself further pain by marking the thread as Read. If any of you have cause or just impediment to my proposal, speak now or forever hold your peace.
When somebody said moving home was one of the most stressful things to do, they weren’t kidding.
I have no date yet because I have had to change to another flat because the tenant in the first flat I was buying would not move out. So I was offered another flat instead, I have ended up with a better flat at the same price. “Fingers crossed”
Back to the cricket.
I have trying to figure out what you good people on here have been saying about qualifying, I will admit I am more confused than ever. When will we know?
I do have a top floor flat Tim and I can see the penthouses from the balcony, but it is outside the ground.
The advantage will be next year I will not care how late some of the matches finish when I will live only one minutes walk from the ground.
PS.
My estate agent said the best flats on the ground are the corner ones on the right hand side; they have a balcony that go around the side so you get a view of the ground and the Quantocks.

Being in India was a bonus. Saturday was wonderful. We were Lancashire like yesterday (didn't play to our...)and if we come home on Thursday still well done., IF T and T go for it and win then its double bonus time. To still have an interest on October 14th is fantastic
So.
I've read all the posts attempting giving an explanation.
And I'm confused.
For us to qualify we need exactly what to happen?
Is it a miracle?
Or a possibility?
If T&T win (by any amount) or the game is rained off, Somerset progress.
If Deccan beat T&T by a large margin (that can't be specified until the end of the first inns of that game, but will, one way or another, represent a sound thrashing), Somerset progress.
If Deccan beat T&T by a small-to-middling margin, Somerset are out.
The only further point I will make is that if the chasing side wins, the run margin is irrelevant.
(No change there from usual, in as much as sides batting seconds don't win by "runs".)
If the chasing team wins it will be the overs margin that counts.
IF the side batting first bats for the full 40 and wins, then the 89 runs margin discussed above is correct.
"I might be able to offer some hope. The weather forecast looks pretty bad for the final group game." [www.metcheck.com]
Far be it from me to introduce cynicism here, but I do rather suspect that the umpires will be under orders to get a game on, come hell or high water, in order that the precious IPL side not be denied their 'rightful,' place in the next round.
If Deccan bat first, they must win by 89 runs to keep us in it.
If T&T bat first, the required margin will be in overs, and will depend on the score in the first innings.
It's really quite simple!
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:10:13:14:31:44 by Frome Exile.
My bookie makes Deccan an overwhelming favourite for the game. Then again, we were heavily favoured vs T & T as well.
One risk for SCCC is that we could fall foul of what happened in the Victoria - Wayamba game.
If Deccan bat first, then once T & T get within this magical figure of 89 runs then, assuming they avoid being bowled out short of the distance, they no longer need to do much of anything to get through i..e they might simply bat out the innings, making sure they do not lose wickets. Let's hope that's not the West Indian way!
Victoria were super negative in their game with Wayamba, aiming not for a win, but for the 89 or so that they needed to qualify (batting second.)
It's also a pity that this game is back in Hyderabad, as I think the Bangalore pitch suits T & T perfectly.
I may have added to the confusion with some of my earlier posts (shurely shome mishtake! ), but if T&T bat second and then get within the 89 runs, it no longer matters whether they get bowled out. The 89 runs is the margin required over a twenty over match, and in an all-out situation, the rate "for" is always calculated over twenty overs. Bowling them out would alter Deccan's rate conceded, but it's not Deccan's NRR which would be of concern if they win.
Incidentally, our ideal scenario is for Deccan to prevail by a large enough margin, as if this is the case, we will carry forward our two points from having beaten them.
If we go through with T&T, they will carry forward two points.
Under what circumstances can both these teams go through?
I'm sure the organisers wouldn't want one of the big IPL teams going out.
Let's hope we get a fair result.
I'm sure we will.
Come on T & T - let's hope they relish the atmosphere - as we did - and rise to the occcasion, as opposed to freezing under the pressure of playing in front of a massive and partisan crowd.
T & T are batting first. I think that means T & T will have to win to put us through.
If T & T make an indifferent total, then I can see Deccan pacing their winning reply, as opposed to knocking them off so quickly that they put us through (unless, maybe, Gilchrist plays an absolute blinder.)
RP Singh has just overstepped three times in succession! Unforgiveable; paerticualrly as it wasn't until the thrid free hit in succession that the batsman managed to connect!
15 runs off a nine ball over, and only four of them off the bat!
Almost might have to hope for this to swing the other way now, and then hope that Gilchrist does one of his specials to hunt down a poor total very quickly..
I really don't think they're going to get a particularly good score with the bat.
In which case, we'll have to hope to God they have a superb power-play in which they get both Gilchrist and Symonds cheaply. Do that, and it's possible some of the others might panic under pressure?
Yep, Chris, you guys will have to do it for us now.
This pitch is not so good for bowling spin as the other one, though.
I think Rampaul and Bravo will have to come up HUGE in the power-play and you certainly can't afford the number of wides that you bowled early on against us.
Please, Lord, let Gilchrist and Symonds fail early.
Didn't think you were - was just pointing out my omniscience.
Argh why is Bravo a dropper all of a sudden.
Interesting (although irrelevant now) point that it isn't in Deccan's interest to put us through - they wouldn't carry points forwards whereas if they and TT go through they would.
Means another time if a team skittled someone they could tick along very slowly on purpose - gift a side runs if they scored big first and are completely in control.
Slow Left Chinaman Interesting (although irrelevant now) point that it isn't in Deccan's interest to put us through - they wouldn't carry points forwards whereas if they and TT go through they would.
As I believe I may have mentioned yesterday.
3 wickets whilst I was driving. Might have to pop out again!
So that's Ł80k? - should be a nice addition to the Hoggy pot.
I know 2020 is much maligned, but in our group 2 of the 3 matches have been incredible.
TandT are a MUCH better team than I think anyone gave credit for - without Gilchrist's brilliant knock (does he not need practice) they would have given Deccan a hiding.
Thed most impressive thing about that last over is that you can see Bravo weighing up (in fact he even appears to ask) whether Ramdin can make it to the stumps in time to take a gentle toss from him and run out the batsman, rather than Fidel. When it becomes obvious that Ramdin can't get there, he calmly turns around and trots back to despatch Edwards.
If you can keep your head..........
CricInfo confirms that it's Eagles (conquerors of Sussex) on Friday.
The Eagles, from what I can gather, were formed by the merger of Free State and Griqualand West into a single franchise.
League Stage
There will be two leagues, comprising of four teams each.
LEAGUE A LEAGUE B
A1 RCB
A2 Cape Cobras
NSW Blues Delhi Daredevils
Diamond Eagles
Victorian Bushrangers
With us being A2. T&T already have 1 win over us so presumably we need to win both of our games to go through?
If I was female I'd want Dwayne Bravo's babies and whoever we play it's another couple of days of the season and another chance to fire properly and spoil someone's party.
Just hope we do ourselves a little more justice with the wood this time.
Eagles have had something of a mixed time so far, beating Sussex in that `Golden Over` eliminator, after tieing at 119, but being bowled out for under 100 by New South Wales, some 40-plus runs short.
Their best known players from the English county circuit are Leicestershire`s HH Dippenaar, their captain, and Kent`s Ryan McLaren.
As I read it, we might well be in the easier of the two second stage groups, with both Delhi and Bangalore in the other group. However, are the remaining IPL sides such a threat?
He's a great player even now. Would have liked him to look a little more concerned as 30000 rabid home fans screamed for their first victory in 9 and his side was throwing it away.
Maybe it's just that he's seen it all before. But after watching these two games he really is one of the greats.
With all the IPL teams (I think) now eliminated, this Just goes to show that you can have all the "star" players you want, but the team ethic will nearly always shine.
Well done and good luck boys, now lets show the quality we have in depth, and not leave it to Alfonso to do it all!
Thanks to the Trini posse for one of the best birthday presents I've had today (as I notch up one of my slower half-centuries!).
Yes, if Cam can't make it for the 20-20 next summer, I'll take Bravo as a decent sub.
I think we already knew Gilchrist was one of cricket's nice guys, as I believe is Brett Lee. Are they really Aussies, or from somewhere between Cheddar and Chard?
Thanks to Chris L for an awesome performance in the field from his guys!!!
I didn't realise the second stage is also only two games - assumed it was at least three.
Looks like we will have to win both games and (probably) hope that T and T do us a further favour and down NSW as well.
That would leave T and T with 4-6 points.
Us with 4 points
NSW with 2
and Eagles with 0-2.
Our second stage games are both at Hyderabad, for which I am thankful. Concrete pitch (like Taunton.) Don't think either of the other surfaces suit us too much.
We did not bowl even one ball of spin vs Deccan at Hyderabad.
Guys like Pete and Ben who do not always bowl all of their allocation in T20 bowled excellently.
I wonder if we'll pick Waller for both of these games, given that not one ball of spin was necessary to beat Deccan?
Might depend on whether there are any other options that Rose/Langer/Hurry feel good about?
Sadly, I doubt they'll rush to pick either Wes (which would add an extra batsman) or Jonah (which would add an extra pace option.)
On the other hand, it may be that we bowled no spin at all at Hyderabad because we thought that the Deccan innings was well enough in hand that they would end with a well below-par total.
Both Gilcrhist and Tres seemed to think 180 would be par on that pitch. However, with hindsight, it looks like none of the three different teams that have batted at Hyderabad got, or would have got close to 180 on it.
AGod I assume Bravo does not currently have an IPL contract?
I think he will be getting one, now.
He'll probably be signing for Hants, too, along with everyone else.
Bravo is actually the best 20/20 all rounder in the World. He has had two superb seasons with Mumbai Indians in the IPL and has been signed up to play for Victoria in the Big Bash Australian 20/20 tournament this year. He was the third top runscorer in the World 20/20 tournament and was in the top 10 wicket takers.
That is why I find the comment about Bravo being a decent sub for Cameron White mildly amusing. Bravo is as good as it gets in 20/20 cricket.
ah! I assumed he did not have an IPL contract as I'd guessed the Indians would have prevented him from playing for T and T, given that he is contracted to an IPL side. I guess, because the Mumbai team did not make it, they didn't mind him lining up for T and T.
If Bravo is going to be playing for Victoria, then I guess his batting and that of Cam White (Victorian captain) will be very easy to compare.
As far as Somerset are concerned, we would be seeing Cam White as a batsman, not an all-rounder. And the guys that we are looking at for our second overseas player (for T20) are - so far as we know - batsmen, namely Cam White and Graeme Smith.
We've already signed one overseas bowler - Murali Karthik - for next season and so I think the feeling may be that we want a batsman as our second T20 player.
That's fair enough. If someone does sign Bravo they will have to pay a fair amount I would imagine as his reputation in 20/20 cricket is only improving.
What is scary is that he hasn't fired at all with the bat and yet we won both our games.
Yep, Chris, I think your team as a whole has done as well as could possibly have been expected with the ball, but there could be more to come with the bat. Equally, I'd probably say something similar about Somerset, although we seem to have underachieved with the bat by a greater margin than you guys.
I thought you looked good value at 22 to 1 and am wishing I had some, especially as I think you only need beat the Eagles to be sure of going through to the semis.
I'm particularly looking forward to seeing what young Craig Kieswetter can come up with in these next two games.
He clearly found it tough going with the bat in the first two games - he was given nothing wayward on which to pounce. I assume he's been off with AH/JL/MT working on how to possibly manufacture a few runs from good balls and/or on ways and means to unsettle a bowler so that he bowls fewer good balls (e.g faking a press forward as the guy is about to deliver the ball in the hope he will drop it short.)
Either that or he may just have received some advice from MT/JL along the lines that, at the spot he comes in, there is a bit of time to play himmself in, even in T20, before he has to try any big shots i.e. 3 or 4 dot balls at the start of his innings are not a disaster.
I think this is very exciting for our younger players to get another two games in a tournament that has been of borderline international standard.
It is my strong view that you don't improve, as a young cricketer, by playing against the Grant Hodnetts of this world. You do so by playing against the Bravos, the Gilchrists and the Brett Lees. Beating Northants gave these young guys a chance at an invaluable experience and now it has been prolonged.
All the pressure is off our guys. We're not expected to go any further and we've enjoyed a huge slice of luck to be still in, so let's go and show the rest of the cricket world what we're capable of. It's a tremendous opportunity for any player to give their career a huge boost.
It will be interesting to see what the team is for Friday. In spite of Tim's wishes, JL has to play-and he still has one decent innings left in him. I would go exactly as before.
We bowled no Arul or Max in the first match-but they were there. We bowled no Pete or ZdeB in the second match and they were there. That makes 7 available bowlers and great variety. No body deserves to be left out and to put Banks in instead of Max is a step backwards.
Bravo was awesome but can we give the freedom of Porlock Weir to Pollard for those wonderful sixes. (the hotel there used to be kept by a Pollard family so it would be appropriate)
One of the clues in today's Times 2 crossword gave the answer Taunton. We should have know from that we'd be alright.
Cheers,Beegrumpy,much appreciated.
For the team to have qualified for the next stage is an incredible achievement, everyone involved can be so proud of what they have done for us all.
This must,at last for some, show just what Mr Langer has actually done for our county.(Not to forget Mr Hurry either)
Three years or so ago we were bottom of the pile in everything,we couldn't win an argument.
And now look at us.
On top of the world.
And loving it.
Justin Langer.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
There is only one change I'd make and I don't mind being brave or stupid enough to come on here and say different.
I have studied a lot of 20/20 and am always looking to improve things with inovation, etc, so it would be nice to be allowed to be the 1% that doesn't share the same view.
You don't have to agree with me, but it doesn't make me any less of a supporter because I am in the minority on this subject.
well said Tim....totally entitled to state what you think.
I agree with you re JL on the batting front and think he knows he is past it (hence the retirement), however I think his mere presence in the team is a big lift.
Next season will be a big test methinks....which is why we have to take his advice and get in a couple of good quality players.
All the evidence suggests to me that Langer has made a huge contribution to Somerset's success over the last few seasons. Dropping him from the 20-20 side and replacing him by anyone else in the squad (estimable cricketers though they are) would, in my view, weaken rather than strengthen the team.
I know Craig hasn't excelled in 2020 to the extent that he has in 40/50 overs, but I'd be very tempted to swap him and JL around - looking at most of the games, people struggle to score later on and so need to take full advantage of new ball and PP.
Of course, JL's view could simply be that Craig can score quickly at any stage and therefore is worth holding back.
MT and JL versus Brett Lee? Can't wait! This really is a fantastic opportunity for all the guys, wonder if facing your average county trundler will feel different next year if one of the youngsters cracks Lee Clark and Bollinger all over the place?
I think it's redundant to suggest that he will not play, because he will.
Equally, I think the idea that he somehow "has," to play as though he is somehow indispensible in this format is similarly wide of the mark.
It may be that, were it not for the possible uncertainty over his ability to 'do,' this tour, that Marcus may otherwise have captained this as a prelude to next year.
AGod ah! I assumed he did not have an IPL contract as I'd guessed the Indians would have prevented him from playing for T and T, given that he is contracted to an IPL side. I guess, because the Mumbai team did not make it, they didn't mind him lining up for T and T.
there were several players with 2 contracts - eg Dwayne Smith who played IPL for Deccan, but opted for Sussex in this tournament. And Chawla played in the IPL for a team that didn't qualify for this.
well done T&T and good luck to Somerset !!
But the big match of the next round is surely T&T v NSW ?
And had things been only slightly different, Justin would have been in the same position.
Herschelle Gibbs was initially reported as having chosen his IPL side Deccan Chargers over The Cape Cobras, I believe. I bet he's glad he changed his mind.
AGod - there was talk of the IPL franchises being compensated by the county/state if that's who the players opted for - not sure if we paid Deccan for Smith in the end.
Also of course the IPL teams needed to reduce their bloated squads of players down to 15 - I think deccan had something like 10 overseas players on their books last season !
It is great news that T&T have played with such gusto, flair and enjoyment and if we can't win the thing, I hope they do.
But I was thinking this morning about how the passage of time alters so many things: thirty years ago, when West Indies were pre-eminent at Test level, Barbados were leaders at regional level. Imagine a T20 team that opened with those notorious dawdlers, Greenidge and Haynes, with Marshall, Clarke, Daniel and Garner serving up some gentle medium pace...
Exiled Tim ....I have studied a lot of 20/20 and am always looking to improve things with inovation, etc, so it would be nice to be allowed to be the 1% that doesn't share the same view...
You don't have to agree with me, but it doesn't make me any less of a supporter because I am in the minority on this subject.
Such a righteous stance.
It is a shame that comments posted elsewhere suggest that FE's post about a little bit of petulance wafting about the place may not be that far from the truth and your personal vendetta against the Somerset captain has roots in anything but an in depth analysis of the 20/20 format as you suggest.
You're completely allowed to be the 1% (it may even be higher than that) but please don't make out it's simply based on something dispassionate and analytical when it clearly isn't

According to crincinfo, Symonds (who has presumably not moved from the middle to some commentary team somewhere) claims that this wicket is getting progressively slower.
I wonder if this implies that the groundstaff have been unable to do any work on it in between games?
The only name amongst the Eagles bowlers with which I'm really familiar is Ryan McLaren; but the also feature the cricketer with my favourite name: Thandi Tshabalala (.................la, la, la, la, la says..............I love you!).
Some expert on here whom I respect (was it FE?) said it was difficult to register and that's enough to put off a non tekkie like me, especially as I shall be away from home from tomorrow and probably unable to watch any more matches.
I think it was Bloke that had some difficulty. There is actually noting intrinsically odd about the process. However, he may have suffered a malfunction (the website malfunctionining, not Bloke.)
Crowds have tended to be virtually non-existent at the start of the first game in these double-headers, Tractor.
It'll be busier for NSW vs. T&T later, but may still not be heaving.
Extremely well done to Wes...will someone think a little and realise what an asset this man is in the shorter game or will we lose this versatile player...hope not.
Whilst I have no desire to be controversial, AG; as much as it is not LoL's place to tell people what they cannot say, neither is it yours to give another permission to speak.
I confess that I had previously thought that Wes was a rather limited batsman. Today, he was a revelation - at least to me. I was particularly impressed by the common sense he showed and by his bravery, having just come into the side, in going for his shots.
I was thinking about you this morning, Wickham, knowing that in the past the prowess of Durston was one of the very few points on which we have ever had different views. I've always liked the way he plays and it is great that you clearly appreciated his innings so much.
He's Somerset through and through and I really hope we can keep him - and give him many more opportunities than he enjoyed in the recent summer.
Today tells me all I need to know. Wes has to stay.
Im afraid the people you would expect to score vruns haven't and apart from Thomas. Hildy and Wes himself battingwise we've been disappointing in this tournament.
I suspect this will be seen as sacrilege, but much as I respect Charl Willoughby, a T20 bowler he aint!
I really would (and you'll have to choose to either trust me or not that this isn't hindsight) would have opened with Trego and had Banks in for Willo, to possibly split four overs with Hildreth.
To be honest, FE, I think that all of the options for bowling at the other end to Thommo in the PP are, arguably, a little slow and likely to be very hittable, unless it swings.
Yes, I hope Wes' effort here has been noticed. His stats have always suggested he is a more than capable batsman (38 ave in first-class, 30 in List A) ...
I agree with you, FE, about Charl. 20/20 is not his forte.
I'd give Wes a bowl. He's done it with the bat, so may well do it with the ball. It often happens that way. Put a slip in all the time, as we need wickets.
Commentators keep making reference to JL's body language, which might stress the team.
Steffan took 3 wickets in the warm-up games, so deserves a chance.
Once again I question our tactics. We needed wickets to put pressure on, so why did we bowl without a slip? There were several nicks, as there usually are, during the time I was home for lunch. We need to be more pro-active.
Interestingly, poor old Arul was wired for sound and when they were coasting with two wickets down, they asked him how we would change things to take a couple of quick wickets, which he acknowledged we were desperate for. He said they didn't have a plan, but they believed in each other.
I think we should wait until after the next game to decide whether we have or haven't anything to lose.
If T&T beat NSW, they're through, and we can go through if we beat NSW by whatever margin is required to acheive a NRR better than theirs.
No disrespect to ZDB, but he's the one I would drop in order to include Buttler. ZDB's proved things at high levels of the game; now give a young man a chance to see what the big stage is like.
Our biggest failure in this tournament has been our inability to deal with the powerplays. Other sides have had us looking demoralised during this phase. Luck is also high on the list, as maybe we haven't had the best of luck this time around, but luck usually evens itself out over time.
The plusses for me have been the catching, Wes blossoming from obscurity, some fielding, Fonz on day one are just a few.
The biggest negative was the sky+ recording missing the last 4 balls in our victory!
Another interesting point is that most teams have used a ftmlots of slower bowlers, very successfully, whereas we persist with mostly medium pace, which is usually easier to get away.
This tournament has raised some interesting debate.
Missed the game as it seems to have been played in the middle of the night Canadian time !
A pity we haven't fired at the top end. I really thought this would be a great showcase for CK to show what he is capable of, so a shame it hasn't worked out.
Some plusses though - Wes certainly & also good experience for Max.
Think ET makes some valid points re our tactics. Can't help thinking that Steff would also have done OK given his batting abilities & track record as a death bowler.
Hope Wes is retained. Come to think of it, I hope Steff is as well !
Grizzzly
P.S. Have just realised what the tournament & Grockles are missing..............Mike's match day photographs. Can you get out there for Sunday Mike ??!!
Edited for typo.

Let's not be too harsh,we've done so very well to get where we are,the only British team to get this far.
It has been an amazing experience for everyone and all concerned can be proud of their achievements.
Great to se Wes doing well,he did what was asked of him and came out on top.
So,we lost.
You win some.
You lose some.
I'm just chuffed we've had this extension to our season.
Nice one lads.
Yes. We'd be gone, as either T&T or Eagles would join NSW on 4 points, or would both end up on 3 points after a "no result". The best we can now get is 2 points.
Provided T&T win this, (and Pollard is doing his best for us again: somebody buy him a cider!) and T&T also beat Eagles, I'm sure it'll be T&T on 6 and everybody else on 2, so it'll be down to NRR.
Watching the highlights. Poor batting by most of the top 5. Hilda and Wes made a game of it but there just wasn't enough made in the first 10 and you can't be short in this part of the event unless you have T and T's bowling attack!!
Interesting comments by Justin at the front end of the game. Said that he had faith in Wes because he'd played a lot of first class cricket for us at home! He also said he hoped he took his opportunity.
Well he didn't play that much first class cricket for us in 2009 JL but he damn well took advantage of his chance so what does that mean in relation to his future at Taunton?
Wes made it look so much easier than the others. He hit the bad balls and KEPT EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE GROUND!!! (Except for the last shot). Excellent by WJD - 57 off 32.
The commentators also suggested that we are out of the competition. JL didn't disagree. They say there'll be at least two teams with 4 points at the end come what may.

Well done indeed to all the team for not only getting there, but also achieving what they have during this tournament so far, and today I send special plaudits to Wes Durston in particular.
I have said on this forum several times that Wes has seldom let us down in one-day cricket.
I fear and suspect that his non-selection for the first-team over the past couple of seasons has in part been due to the fact that he hasn't met 'the one size fits all' philosophy autonomously demanded by Langer.
Langer's stewardship of the club is now almost at an end, so hopefully (as far as I see it) Wes may decide to stay, providing of course that he is given the option.
Not according to the tables on the TV. Every other side in our group had two points at the start of this round and Tand T now have 4. Even if we beat NSW we can't get on par with two other sides here because we have already lost one game.
Sorry Clarence but Wes couldn't get into the side because he was the fourth bowler in our slow bowling setup and therefore stood behind Max and Omari in the selction process.
If anything he did not get in because of a faith in James Hildreth and a lack of belief in him as a batsman in all forms of the game (something I also think the club as a whole has been mistaken in for two seasons at least) that some have questioned towards the end of the season. That wasn't only coming from Justin it seems.
What is this "one size fits all" policy. It's the second time I've read it this week? But the first time I can recall reference to it.
How does it fit around. Arul, Zander, Pete, Craig, Marcus, Max, Alfonso etc? What is the "size" they all fit?
Come on now Grockle, since when did hard facts have anything to do with those who have an axe to grind with Mr Langer?
We have to face it that ever since he came here he has been hell-bent on destroying the careers of a select bunch of handchosen players, those who in a previous life bullied him at school.
Some chap told me this in the Co-op earlier.
Must be true.
Then they are confused on the Telly FE because they all quoted that we could not qualify for the semi's and were out of the competition and when JL was interviewed and was told we had no chance of going through he didn't argue the point.
If we were to be able to go through would that be a victory against NSW? If that's the case then our batting had better start to fire at the front end because it hasn't at all up until now and they will hit 170+ if ya let em!
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:10:17:12:04:53 by Grockle.
I think the essence is that we need to thump NSW by a sizable margin and hope that T&T beat the Eagles at the same time. We can overtake the Eagles on run-rate fairly easily by the look of it (as long as they lose), but need a big win against NSW to haul theirs in.
Well I have to say, as much as I would love us to be in the semi, NSW should be there rather than us on past performances.....then again, it isn't based on past performances is it?
Just checked the points tables again and realised that Somerset are already in the last eight - so we're one of the best eight T20 club sides IN THE WORLD. That's not bad in its own right, is it?
And still in with a mathematical (but realistic) chance of reaching the last four.
We seem to have staggered to our present 20/20 heights so who's tp say we shan't stagger on. A loss at Edgbaston by a few runs meant that we only qualified as a best lace third, which meant we play Lancs, which meant it rained which meant the bowl out . We lost the final and qualified as second, gained our win against Deccan on the last ball, went through thanks to T and T so on pat history we shall hammer NSW while T and T do the same to Eagles and there we are
Bitterly disappointed about Banks for Waller. Unless the latter is injured, this is a borderline indefensible selection in my view. I think Max has been excellent. Banks for Phillips, I could have understood but Banks for Waller? no thanks.
Huge ask for young Buttler on his T20 debut but will be interested to see what he can do.
Ben not playing because he's injured. The only reason I can see Banks playing is because we lose the batting of Ben as well and they have put Jos in to bolster up the batting (need a big score) and Banks for slightly the same reason.
I do have to say though that if this comes down to the spinners we may lose out because Waller has been a better one day man than Omari.
Great to see Jos in there...what a chance for the youngster!
Have to agree about Justin AG but I bet he walks out first.
and he does.....

We're letting the bowlers dictate. Not enough from the first three. If Langer is in for the experience and to anchor this innings, then Craig has to hit a few. If that isn't the plan I don't understand what the plan is.
10 off 3 is no real score - we have to attack them or we may as well pack up and go home rather than wasting the three hours. One has to hope that these two arte looking to put a base down and then let the other guys go for it but I'm not sure we have people in that kind of form.
Maybe changing the first two would have been a better idea even if more of a gamble.
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:10:18:11:48:09 by Grockle.
I had formed the opposite impression, Grockle. Until that rush of blood by Craig just now, I thought we were batting sensibly and going for an approach of conserving wickets. With Bollinger bowling badly, it seemed a fair approach to me.
But they then feel pressurised to push the score on AG, try big hits to big boundaries and they both go to catches.
Hilda and Arul may operate differently, puching the score on with ones while wating to hitr the loose ball.
I suppose time will tell whether Langer had some deeper idea that will come to fruition later in the innings. Let's hope that is how it pans out - we have a lot of batsmen but only a few with some runs to their names.
When do you use Banks or Buttler if the pressure comes at the end?
I'm just seeing us - a batting side of some stature - losing games because we don't bat intelligently in this format. We have to win this by a big margin and that has to mean a big first innings score because we haven't been tight even though the bowlers have done a failry decent job inthis tournament.
It will be easier batting second as the moisture gives them a bit more.
AGod's spot on - Lee and Clark are world-class, and we're getting desperate too soon. Got to look to put up 120 or so here to have something to defend.
Yep - we don't look like a team with a plan I'm afraid. Big of gamesmanship from Clarke - just making it a little harder for Arul to get into his ground. But I think he was still dead - excellent fielding.
We just aren't in this class of T20 I'm afraid. Tight hard bowling, good fielding. the only way around that is aggressive, confident batting and that comes from the front end and as Tim has said before it needs the first six overs to be decisive.
That is a lesson we'll take away from this.
Marcus didn't push it either so before the Langer bashers get on, remember there are FIVE batsmen at the front end - so if you are going to blame it ALL on the captain then please give us examples of the other batsmen who have shwon the way in maroon and grey in this tournament in the first 10 overs!
Watched my side four times now. Not happy. Hammered three times and going for a fourth. Easily the worse side in the tournament. Please make me eat my words.
Well we can;t be the worst Sam because we got to the last 8. BUT we are the worst side in the last 8 I would agree. I don't see a plan for this game....then again I haven't really seen a game plan in any T20's, except for maybe the Kent semi at Edgbaston.
We rely too much on Marcus to get us off to a start and when we don't get that we have nothing in the tank to rely on except some grit from the back end.
My only take is that he needs someone solid to marshall the tail should Zander go so he's keeping Wes back. No idea where he now plans to use jos though except as a last gasp.
The problem is that Omari doesn't score quickly.
I suppose it shows a lack of faith in his batsmen's prowess that he doesn't believe that they can stay there in any number.
Then again, they haven't really given him any reason to believe they will in this competition up to now!!

Frankly, Grockle, It wouldn't even surprise me if we have not yet decided whether or not give Banks a new deal and he's been sent in here to try and prove that he deserves one..
It's never happened in an SCCC shirt, Grockle. A figment of Langer's imagination. Or, maybe, Ben was put on the spot to explain an inexplicable decision and he just guessed what Langer was thinking?
AGod Frankly, Grockle, It wouldn't even surprise me if we have not yet decided whether or not give Banks a new deal and he's been sent in here to try and prove that he deserves one..
Well that settles matters....Lee's taken the lot out....Regarding contracts...When does Hildreth's come up for review ? This guy wins my underachiever award hands down...
It's hard to disagree Scots. End of next year I would assume.
If Buttler gets going next year then james can't really be allowed to call number 4 his spot for a whole season again without some real returns can he?
I think the writings on the wall for Hildreth....No real signs that he's progressing with his career (forget the 300+ at the start of the season)...Shame really...It's been downhill since C Colville tipped him for England honours...!
He needs a new county. However if you can't bat at Taunton...WELL....!
Think it's a bit unfair to single out Hildreth in particular. His innings in the games -v- Chargers and Eagles were useful if not spectacular. What's more, the other players who have been spoken of as potential England cricketers - Kieswetter, Trego, Suppiah - have contributed next to nothing (with the bat, at least - Trego and Suppiah have bowled one pretty good spell each). But, all in all, the failure of Somerset's young batsmen to stake a well-timed claim on an international stage has been the real disappointment of the tournament, for me.
I don't think the question of James is because of this tournament. He's been more effective than quite a few others in this event. BUT except for that early 300, what has he done for the county? Wes has hardly played this year but has a really enviable average with the bat.
Faith has stayed with James for two seasons now and although I'm not as agressively anti-JH as Scots, many have questioned on what basis he has been given that 4/5 spot as the season has gone on.
Competition keeps people interested and fighting for places. I've advocated Wes more than once. He's a better bat than any seem to give him credit for - he always has been. We've seen what faith does for a part player in the improvement of Arul Suppiah. Why not Wes as well? Would the competition get James moving as well? Couldn't do us any harm.
We should probably apologise to the England selectors because there has been no evidence (with the bat) in this tournament to suggest that our various batting prospects that we have touted, are even close to being ready for international cricket, as yet.
Doesn't mean they won't get there. I think they can all learn from this and improve.
And I think James has done quite well - compared to most - in our (batting) side in this tournament.
He needs to have a better CC season with the bat next season, but so does ZDB and Brian Rose needs to look at introducing some competition for places.
I'm no expert so I struggled to see the reasoning used today.
It's obvious to most that Wes should have batted earlier,it's what management speak people call a "no brainer".
There seems to be little or no flexibility in the thought processes being employed when it comes to the batting order.
Very frustrating.
NSW have this new idea of batting. Harvey and Hughes hit it into gaps! They also try this novel thing of hitting it along the ground! How amazing....and it seems to work. Who would have thunk it?
Guys...I'd love to see JH come to the fore much in the same way as Arul has done this season...It's all about Somerset CCC for me rather than individuals...
This tournament has highlighted how far the county has come, or not! Regarding Durston....Wes has always been on the fringes...Yet here he is in India showing everyone what a versatile player he is....So why is it that JL and BR failed during the domestic season to recognise this ?
Is there a suggestion that there's a "blue-eyed boy" situation down at Taunton ?
The commentators also talked about the lack of flexibility and it is something more than one captain in the past few years has been guilty of.
Greame Smith was the one exception.
We've all suggested that Langer has been on a steep learning curve in the shorter game and although he has been a little more flexible in the one dayers, we've muddled through in the T20's with Big man Trescothick taking it to people and the bowlers managing tight stuff in the short sessions.
Now he faces a team collapsing more than once and that mighty batsman not there. He hasn't got an answer. Or chooses the wrong route of two.
He's at fault but the support of his batting choices is also at fault. This is a team effort. We've failed as a team just as we won as a team and the introduction of Wes has been treated with far too much suspiscion because he is the new thing in a system that has worked (albeit scrappily) in the past.
Got to accept and welcome the challenge and think laterally in this stuff. AND have faith in your SQUAD and not your only eleven players in eleven positions.
Smith knew that. Langer hasn't learned it and his side hasn't adapted to the new situations anything like quickly enough.
Some things for Marcus to think about and Hurry to get his act together over for the next time this comes about.
You don't know that any more than the rest of us do AG so it's a matter of personal opinion.
If he hasn't been then he should have been and that's not just the fault of one man. He can't be the one on the field but he has to contribute off it.
I do think Marcus was part of the decision making process in the first part of this event. That showed on and off the pitch. We may have missed him in this more than just with the bat.
If that's the yardstick the everyone bar Marcus and Craig have under-acheived with the bat.
But it isn't: they do only play half of their games there, for one thing!
In 2009 Hildreth scored 656 @ 72.89 at Taunton, and 278 @ 23.17 elsewhere.
I'm not entirely sold on the Taunton disequals proper cricket schtick, myself, but a big discrepancy between home and away performance is not a trait I like to see in any player, no matter what his home ground.
I am amazed today, not just by the selections and tactics which once again baffle me and seemingly the commentators. There is widespread condemnation for our selections, tactics and performance from all.
Jones deserved a chance and didn't get one.
Waller bowled pretty well on Friday, fielded well and was dropped, what a poor signal to a young player.
Buttler deserved his chance and Langer let us down once again. Langer is out of form and didn't merit his place.
Banks, well what can you say?
Once on the field, we all knew we had to take them on in the PP, but seemingly the tactics seemed to avoid losing wickets. We failed in every dept and the team must be thoroughly demoralised. Hopefully they can all emerge stronger.
Have our management not studied the blue-print for 20/20?
I have no faith in them.
Some tough decisions need to be taken this winter.
AGod Overall marks for this tournament?
Bowling: 8 out of 10.
Fielding: 9.5 out of 10
Top-order batting: 1 out of 10
Lower-order batting: 7 out of 10.
6, 7, 1, and 6, for me. Good that Buttler had a fairly successful run-out, today; otherwise, our Wes would've felt pretty lonely in the travelling-home-with-reputation-enhanced compartment.
"Once on the field, we all knew we had to take them on in the PP, but seemingly the tactics seemed to avoid losing wickets. We failed in every dept and the team must be thoroughly demoralised."
I hope they are not THAT demoralised, Beefy.
If they have retained a sense of perspective, they will realise they were up against - more or less - an Australian international attack, today, with Lee, Clark, Hauritz and Bollinger all having been recent members of various Aussie touring parties.
If you put in the persepective of Somerest - minus our one proven ODI player versus Australia, it looks a little different?
From the River End (2) Exiled Tim,
Steffan Jones, how did he warrant a place in the first eleven?
Which bowler were you kicking out?
If you could provide a compelling case then let us all know..
Our management got us to the super eights of the champions league,I have ever confidence in them to continue our improvement in this game.
I have to admit however, that I have no confidence in your understanding of the game.
That's fine, you're entitled to your opinion. I'm happy that mine is shared by all the tv analysts / commentators.
As for Jones, he bowled well in the warm-ups and when BP was injured, it seemed obvious to play him.
As for my opinions, they seem to be shared by most on here, at least today. You keep your head in the sand though, but don't forget to breather occasionally.
Season Over... we must have learned from this trip.
We can now all look forward now to the next season.
I wait with interest to see if the change in Captains will have an overall change in tactics and ideas for the club in 2010.
Will Marcus have the same train of thoughts as Justin has had, will he (Marcus) stamp or be allowed to install his own authority on the team or will decisions be shared on and off the field.
Justin’s three year reign has been had a major impact in Somerset’s success, some will say not successful enough, but we are where we are, and we must now build on that, and we must not lose the momentum we have gained over the last few years.
The likes of James, Craig, and Pete, must be more consistent, and the rest of the team follow suit. It takes a squad of players to win the silverware not anyone individual.
Marcus will know Justin will be a hard act to follow, we must hope his is strong enough to step up into the frame full time.
With the caveat that reducing the sample size decreases statistical significance, James' home return aside from the 303* must look pretty woeful! But he's still a very good player, who's made 3000 CC runs in the last three years. He's still actually young in CC terms, and should be just coming into his best years as a batsman. Most people I've read on the subject reckon 27-33 are the real prime years for batters.
Your opinion isn't shared by all of the tv pundits/analysts. Two commentators doesn't make for a compelling case. We have come a long way this season but you seem to ignore that fact.
We have been weak in the batting department Timothy, you like to single out Justin but I'm afraid they are all responsible. Bowling wise we have done reasonably well, yet you want Steffan Jones to play when there is no evidence to support the fact he would make any difference. Are you suggesting he should of replaced Phillips in the first game?
We have had a good season, we have improved our overall game but ultimately lack that final bit in order to turn that good into successful. We should be praising the management and the players not whining every five minutes.
AGod I suspect that Hurry is not given a huge say by JL. I'd guess Marcus will be more collegiate in his approach.
That could very well be an astute comment from you, AGod.
Some may be sorrowful that today's game was the last match to be played for Somerset by Justin Langer. Similarly, others may rejoice at his departure, and the new era that it brings.
Although Somerset again have not won any silverware this year, the season was not without some highlights and good performances coupled, as is only to be expected, with some poor days and disappointments.
That will always be the case I'm afraid.
I have not witnessed a single ball of the Champions League Twenty20, so have no opinion as to where it went pear-shaped for us. However, I doubt that any English / Welsh County Championship side would have progressed any further in the competition than Somerset did, because quite simply the standard collectively of our domestic game is not good enough. And yes, in saying that, I am aware that England regained the Ashes this year, but also came a poor second in the one-day series v. Australia.
To expect a county side to defeat an Australian State side (even in this particular version of the game) is, I am sure, beyond the comprehension of many cricket-lovers and followers in this country .
Despite a 'goodish' season in 2009, Somerset are still deficient in some areas and I hope that post-Langer, Marcus and Co. will build on what we already have, and attempt to remedy what we do not have.
I really hope that Wes Durston is offered a new contract and stays, although I would not blame him for one minute if he left to go elsewhere where he might be more appreciated.
2009 has now ended for Somerset, and 2010 is on it's way, so let's see what that brings.
I think the selection/ batting order was done largely to give people experience of conditions. (Not saying I agree with this, and would definitely have played Waller).
This match was always going to be tough, we have 16 (?) counties, Australia have 6 (?).
This particular game was lost in Brett Lee's first two overs, CK either couldn't, or didn't feel it was worth the risk of taking him on (which is no mean feat). After that there was always going to be pressure on him and others to hit out too much.
As for the overrall management's competence... I'm happy to have a team transformed from a bunch of losers to the most competetive team in all forms of the game in the country. Yes we need a tiny bit extra to bring home trophies, but we're pretty damn close.
Maybe all out slogging is the way to go? Hit it hard, hit it often, from overs 1-20? They've played fantastically throughout, and proved there is still some talent in the West Indies!
Please don't start this 'real name' business especially not when you are on about your fifth pseudoynm. Everyone has the right to ppost as anyone they like.
Please also don't keep hiding behind the 'sarcastic' reply defence. People on here are sarcastic/ironic - including you - so it is no defence. If you can't handle it then don't post.
Now....
There was no discussion about the selectionfrom anyone on the TV. I would have liked to see Waller instead of Banks but losing Phillips and having a fragile batting line-up I can see why they chose Banks (they have more confidence in his batting than we have).
Buttler did get his chance Tim I assume you noticed him playing. BUT if you are losing wickets in lumps when do you introduce the 19 year old with one first class match to his name? Number 3? 4? 5? Surely he was in as support in the hope he'd get a chance to hold an end up and show a bit at the end. Well he did that and looked promising.
Justin is out of form. Who should have taken his place? Would Steffan have been your choice at number 3 or 4?
With fragile batting would you honestly have replaced him with a bowler who hits a few? We haven't got Marcus and the rest of the batting haven't fired at all. Why should the captain be replaced when he quite obviously knew he needed to push it along and died trying. If only you didn't single him out every game you'd have so much more attention given to the other stuff. He fell out with Ian Blackwell. Get over it, it was a year ago.
Banks? Daft decision to send him in before Wes. I'd have sent Wes in before Zander. BUT - he did his best and he did score 15 off 18 so he helped Zander settle the innings. I don't think he should stay but he still did what he was asked to do.
Bowling? he went for 14 an over. Pete went for 15. Everybody was going to go - a spinner with nothing to bowl at put on in over number 3 with Harvey scoring 40 off 13. I know Max would have worked as hard but I'm not sure he would have done better. I'd pick Max as well.
The bowlers did their best defending 111 in a T20. Yep they failed...did you expect them to succeed? They took 4 wickets. Why blame them for not turning a game around that the batsmen lost? Was that Justin's fault as well?
With that wonderful gift of hindsight should he have changed the order?
If he'd brought Wes in earlier would we have won? Nope because we lost too many wickets and too many run makers in the first 6 overs. We would have simply lost a little later IMHO. Playing against an international bowling attack we were stupid and niaive. I agree there was no real plan and the Andy Hurry preparation that has been lauded by Justin and Marcus didn't seem to have the right plan for the NSW bowling attack.
You have no faith in the management? Well there is the biggest surprise of the year!!
You are right about tough decisions. Wes has to stay but he has to stay and have a realistic chance of being picked as a batsman.
Steff didn't play. Did you honestly expect him to? Surely he will go to Derbyshire and was on the tour only as pace backup because Mark Turner wasn't available for if we had a breakdown in a game where we needed a third pace option. We were always going to play a spinner in this one.
What other tough decisions are there gonna be that we all don't know about ET?
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:10:18:17:22:51 by Grockle.
When I argued with CJM and didn't use his screen name, you rightly took issue with it. He's deliberately being provocative with his use of 'Timothy'. Just call me ET or Tim, that's fine.
However, the first umpteen odd posts in this thread, including several by you were highly critical, so I thought I'd deflect that criticism away from the team, because I know some of you can't resist having a pop at me.
It may be paranoia, but its also fact. The evidence is there for all to read, but tempted as I am I won't stoop to similar levels of rudeness.
We were quite lucky to get to the 20/20 Euro stage, so it's a great shame that we didn't take the opportunity to promote ourselves more. Now we look foward to Tres's captaincy and innovation.
Tim...why post huge posts about things and then concentrate on the nature of the reponse from people rather than what is said about the points you make? It's not surprising that people don't believe you have any substantive points to make and are just looking for excuses to bash the bosses.
I'm sorry but you've criticised the management and Justin Langer for nearly everything all season. You have every right to criticise the performance today but go back to your perennials instead and then complain about petty peripherals once more.
How can anyone take you seriously if your only retort to any contrary position is..."he's being nasty to me"
Frome Exile And in response to KS.
Yup. Since the start of 2007, Hildreth has 1808 @ 48.86 at Taunton and 1358 @ 35.74 away which, while still a bit lopsided, shows that he hasn't been completely embarrassing himself on the road.
I certainly wouldn't align myself with anyone who feels his chances have run out, just yet, but I do think it's time he started to do proper justice to his undoubted talent and, if beginning to watch his back as regards his place encourages him to kick on even slightly, that can't be a bad thing.
(Incidentally, though the sample size is pretty tiny, Durston averages 52.00 at Taunton and 54.33 away over the same period.)
"The likes of James, Craig, and Pete, must be more consistent, and the rest of the team follow suit. It takes a squad of players to win the silverware not anyone individual."
It's the 'squad,' bit which concerns me, more than anything. I think we need to make some new signings to add depth/promote competition for places.
If a batmsan gets injured or loses form I do not want to automatically default to a young and untried player, come hell or high water. I would LOVE it if the youngsters that we have are scoring hundreds of runs in the seconds and pushing for a place in the first team. BUt I don't want to just be forced to pick them, willy nilly,if they are not hitting their straps in the second team.
And I think we all believe we need to add a new bowler or two to our ranks.
I don't think anyone thinks any more than that Keith. You don't score 300 without talent but you have to prove that talent can be provided on a consistent basis and that has been harder for James to do.
You're also right about Wes D. But he does get dropped in and told "perform" and more often than not he does. One would therefore hope that more consistent cricket would improve his performance not dilute it.
Right, my comments in this thread are generally about the selection and tactics for this game, but some relate to our previous encounters in 20/20 + the C&G.
Now, realistically we had little chance of winning today and even less of winning by a huge margin, so we could have used the game for the future.
Justin Langer has clearly not been in form for some time, as the commentators kept saying, so I'd have opened with Jos and Craig and given them license to take the game to the Aussies. We had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I'd have put Arul in at 3, Hildreth 4, Durston 5, DeBruyn 6, Trego 7, Fonz 8, Waller 9, Jones 10 & Willoughby 11.
Jones deserved his chance when Ben was ruled out. Banks has proved time and again, that he's not great with the bat, but can be mean with the ball.
What did Waller do to deserve being omitted? This has happened a couple of times this season.
Once we took the field we had to attack straight away, not be mesmerised. Just look how T&T have treated reputations. No-one gave them much of a chance, but they've got better and better.
Unlucky guys. I don't think you did yourselves justice in the last 2 matches, Tres or no Tres. I have seen a number of your domestic 20/20 matches and you were much better than you showed in India. Still at least you beat the IPL champions and Alfonso Thomas will be remembered as a Somerset hero for sometime to come.
Touch wood T & T go on to win this tournament, we have certainly been the best team on show so far. As for nobody giving us a chance, that was through sheer ignorance. T & T have 9 West Indies Internationals, and Windies are an excellent 20/20 outfit. In the Stanford 20/20 we thrashed Middlesex and lost to a full strength England side by 1 run. Some people are making a financial killing out of the bookies lack of research so all power to them .
I'm sorry ET, but even when it's possible to agree with some of what you say, when you shoot yourself in the foot, (or even blow the whole foot off at the ankle) but seriously suggesting opening with a 19-year-old middle-order batsman with one first-class match under his belt (and NO T20 experience at all) you really do undermine your own credibility.
It would have made more sense to move Craig, who's struggeled to make an impression in the PPs, down the order than to make him the senior partner up top. Today was a day for experience: I'd have opened with Justin and Zander and hoped that facing Brett Lee one last time would have briefly re-kindled the fire in the heart of a player who has been one of the greats! Form or no form, if Justin didn't do it today, no-one was going to.
It didn't happen; c'est la vie!
Edited for typos.
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:10:18:19:12:28 by Frome Exile.
Attack should have been the watch word. You couldn't have asked Jos to do that in India for the second game of his first class career. Be serious.
But you could have asked Arul.
I agreed with AG. Justin needed to come in later.
The commentators didn't actually "keep saying" Justin should have moved down the order. They actually kept saying he was on for a big score and was probably going to provide it here!
You've also got one too many people in your side. If Steff was going to replace Ben, how was Max to be played as well? Banks was chosen not only over Max but also INSTEAD of a third paceman. Jos Buttler actually replaced Ben in the line-up not Omari.
Once more you have solved the problem by removing the one man you know would play because Somerset had to go into this with a captain. Would Steff have been your captain perhaps?
We aren't T and T and Brett Lee isn't Henriques so the idea that we were going out to smack theliving daylights of an Aussuie pace attack was a little fanciful. however we should be playing the game like Harvey and Hughes did in the first part of their game and I'm afraid Kieswetter and Langer were not the best players to do that today. Arul and Zander perhaps? Even Arul and James?
The problem Justin had though was NO-ONE has looked like they have any idea (except Wes and let's hope we haven't queered our pitch there) how to play this game. To be a semi decent captain in this you not only have to have the tactical intuition for it but also the players wth the bat to put your plan into action. Somerset didn't have that unfortunately.
None of our lot there today are Kieran Pollard Tim. Not yet or presently.
Hoping they are or blindly believing that they would be if we'd thrown them in would have got us no further. We didn't dictate the game. We didn't play to our strengths and to be honest I'm not sure even then we could have dictated to their bowling attack bowling as well as they did despite the odd wide and overstepping error.
But there has to be a rethink about how we go about this and the good stuff is Jos looked calm and the bowlers competed.

There's little point in doing so anyway, as your own fuse seems incredibly short these days.
I am still very sore from the posts and language you felt it necessary to make on the Lancs. thread. Specifically your 12/9 23.45 post,...........
"That makes me sarcastic...ever so sorry but tough. Come and watch the sodding game "
Whoever that was directed at (& I accept you qualified your comment the the extent that I would not be able to), it was hardly the most eloquent of expression of your views was it ?
I also don't buy the 'you can't comment as you're not here' argument. Informed comment is available from any number of sources these days & people are entirely capable of forming an opinion based on that. (If not, then on what basis do any of us feel able to comment on a 20/20 tournament in India ?!)
Overall, I guess I just struggle with the level of sarcasm & cynicism on the board these days, Hence my decision to stay away for a period recently, (yes, I know the option is open to me to go away completely).
Perhaps rule 2 should be formally dispensed with ?
Thanks for the support, its much appreciated, but what would the point be in a pm with specifics?
I detail a reply, as requested, listing 11 players and am then told that my figures don't add up. I have checked and I list 11 players. I don't even consider Banks, as I don't believe he has done enough to justify selection in any of our teams. Simply the fact that JL or AH pick him, questions their credentials.
Any 20/20 player can take the match by the scruff of the neck. Today was the perfect opportunity to say to young Jos, "I've picked you to open the batting and get us off to a flyer, because you have that raw ability to take the game away from NSW, go and get em", but putting him when wickets have tumbled puts him under pressure.
My thoughts may be radical, but 20/20 is exciting and fortune favours the brave.
Yeh ET, stick a youngster first in front of a couple international bowlers. That isn't radical its plain daft.
You're picking Steffan off the basis of one match, I can't understand why this merits selection. Lets be honest, the fella was only put in because Mark Turner was ruled out and anyway, could well be playing elsewhere next year.
Grizzly,
You have to admit it is very hard to make an informed comment about a match you haven't watched!!!
Yes there are eleven. Please read the response Tim. I note that you've left out Langer. I point that out.
I understand your dislike of Langer and Banks but please provide the figures that make his choice 'question their credentials' You may not agree with them, neither do I but there was a plan behind it and Banks helped Zander settle the innings so it was nothing like the complete disaster you seem to suggest.
Any 20/20 player can take the match by the scruff of the neck What is that supposed to mean? All you have to do against the likes of Brett Lee and such is to swing the bat? You think Kieran Pollard pulls 57 off 13 every day? The reason it is so good is because it is so rare. Good players manufacture innings. Good bowlers pray for someone to come in and just flail in the hope of hitting sixes and fours.
Jos is NOT a "20/20 player" with any kind of experience and if JL had done that and Jos had failed in two balls against Brett Lee you would have been the first on the site blaming JL for gross stupidity in using a novice to play a man's game!
The Somerset batsmen created the pressure situation not the captain by not doing what they are paid for. Jos will have to learn to play under pressure and he did very well but putting the whole game on his shoulders? Do you remember what happenend to Mark Lathwell?
Radical? Off the Wall perhaps. Nice cliche. You've heard of 'fools rush in' I suppose
Today was a perfect 'nothing to lose' situation. Who knows whether or not Jos would have become a hero, but he could have been given the chance and I would have dropped Langer, as I intimated a few days ago.
I've had the misfortune to watch banks, home and away, and rarely has he given me any reason to think he justifys his international reputation, though he can be tight in 50 over games.
FTRE, Jones played in both 20/20 warm-ups and did well, FACT.
It seems that the phase of posting you were saying was subjected to sarcasm was not a series of posts you read competely.
If you had you really wouldn't have called them 'informed'. They used information selectively. They did not respond to any question or evidence that provided alternatives to the one premis that kept being returned to. They criticised people in one post who they then used as expert witnesses in others when a comment suited their premis.
The reason for the comment about being there is that the posters in question totally ignored site members evidence FROM the game while taking as gospel the comments of others who were in another part of the country at the time of the game because THEY backed up their own view and so on.
I mentioned frustration. It seems I am not allowed to express my frustration but have to be ultra sensitive to the frustration of others?
If you were insulted then I apologise to you personally but would also suggest that you read stuff in context and turn your own sensitivity control down a notch or two.
Too many people on here look for reasons to whinge about the tone of others when an argument goes against them or their ideas are not soothingly discussed by people who like/support/think a little more of the people being whinged about.
Yes we all over-react and yes sometimes we are in the minority but we are still expected to justify the comments we make and be involved in two way debate when someone questions our more radical statements. that is part of the respect aspect. It's a two way thing.
You have every right on here to say something bothers your sensitivity but just because you do doesn't mean it bothers others and I may not act unless others agree or make the same request. I suggest that ET is not a good weather vane in that area.
One person has broken the second rule of this site this year. That person was requested to apologise and did. The rule still exists and will be imposed should comments either trigger the automatic filter or posters complain to me directly. Something that affects one posters sensitivity may not be generally mean the rule has been broken.
Other than this I have little more to say. I don't see the comments made responding to ET as 'caustic' in the historical context although FTRE possibly came closest. However ET responded in the same way so there was little for me to deal with.
If you want to go looking for hidden meanings in things I'm sure they are there but that doesn't mean others agree with your interpretation and I need more than one comment to take any kind of action to be honest.
On the subject of my perceived sarcastic remarks to Exiled Tim, could I kindly ask that we take a bit of humour even if a tad sarcastic? After all we are men and surely we don't need to get all upset because I choose to have a spot of harmless fun with Mr Five Usernames.
Timbo, I'll buy you a pint next year to prove there are no hard feelings, if you're lucky I'll throw in a bag of crisps.
Omar Banks did well in one day games so he was picked in a pressure situation FACT
Where did you get the information that this was a "nothing to lose" situation? A semi-final place and large bunches of money rode on this if we'd got it right.
When did Jos Buttler become the saviour of our T20 season? And on what basis/performances would you pick him to open the innings and take on the NSW bowling attack.
If Steff should have played on the basis of the friendlies and Omari shouldn't on your assessment of his performances over the season. On what did you base your assessment of Jos's ability to do what NO OTHER Somerset batsman except for Wes and Alfonso had managed to do?
On your premis then the batsman to be dropped for this match was not Justin Langer. I'll bet you if you looked at the FACTS there were other batsmen who had made less runs in this tournament for us than him!
Your assessments are so contradictory and subjective that you really can't argue when others call them something other than 'innovative'.
They were at the top but for some reason the spacing of the top section has been changed by HQ and they are now just below the point where the two windows meet. A request to resize is in at this moment.
I appreciate the apology Grockle & accept I may have been a tad sensitive on the day concerned.
Having re-read my post of 21.00, it is actually incorrect. I meant to refer to rule 1 i.e. "respect other people's point of view".
In that regard, my point re caustic comments to ET was not based on any particlar part of his own posts (which I did read in full), but more on the generality of the tenor of subsequent ones in response. If someone is to be treated with a lack of respect simply because they post a contrary view, the site becomes the poorer for that & risks degenerating into mutual contempt.
On a separate, but perhaps linked matter, the point that FTRE(2) makes, i.e. .......... .......
"Grizzly,...You have to admit it is very hard to make an informed comment about a match you haven't watched!!!"
........is a very interesting one that might demand it's own thread ! To be honest FTRE(2) I don't have to admit that because in all honesty, I don't agree with it !
We all make comments (informed, semi informed, or perhaps hopelessly ill-informed !), based on news reports/sports reports/news etc. that we read & digest all day. Are you telling me you have no opinion on what goes on in Parliament, or in Afghanistan, or Iran etc. etc. - despite the fact that you may not be there ?
More parochially from a sporting viewpoint, there must be many posters, both from the UK & further afield, who contribute their views/comments on matches/performances that they haven't seen, but instead rely on the likes of TMS, Telegraph/Wisden/Internet reports etc..
Do those sources not constitute 'informed comment' ?
Does that mean they shouldn't post ?
Will you be going to or watching every minute of each & every 2010/11 Ashes Test Match in Australia & if not will you resist the urge to post any comments on any threads arising from those matches ?
I'm not trying to be provocative. Merely seeking to point out that matters aren't always as black and white as it might appear, and that the line between 'fact' & 'opinion' is an extremely thin one !
I indicated a couple of weeks ago that I shall no longer be posting, writing that I would join Grizzzly “in hibernation” although I see that he has awoken earlier than expected!
That was after I had posted about a message from one of the regular contributors which I considered to be disrespectful to another. I also pointed out at that time that the Easy Rules were no longer visible but I see that has now finally been addressed.
Those who missed the exchange cannot form your own opinion on the views expressed at that time because the sequence of messages has been removed. I was not informed as to the reason for the removal of my messages.
I read Grockles for information and entertainment and I have contributed in a minor way from time to time. However recently I have found the tone of some of the exchanges to be quite unbecoming for a meeting place of persons who are generally of like mind i.e. supporting Somerset CCC, and not in keeping with my reasons for reading the message board.
As one of those who can rarely visit Taunton, I have also been disappointed by hints or suggestions that posters should only comment if they have attended/watched a match or matches.
Reading this thread today has confirmed my decision although I realised that the reasons for my absence are known only to a couple of contributors and I decided to place these on record.
I may be accused of being oversensitive but I truly believe that there needs to be a new commitment to maintaining a respectful and collegial approach to posting on this board (Easy Rule # 1) in order to preserve the good spirit of grockles.com.
Winter well everyone and I'll see you in the Spring.
There really seems to be little point in debating this further, as I don't beleiev my posts are being read, just decisions made opn my past performance.
However, two things, we have no idea how Jos would have performed had been put in at the deep end, but we could have tried it. We needed to be radical agaoinst a world class aattack, in order to have had any chance of winning by a huge margin. We didn't, we stuck to script and were anhialated. Our tactics appeared to be to stay in and survive Brett Lee's opening spell. We couldn't afford to do this. I blame JL for that. He gets the praise when things go well, why not the criticism? Reputations don't win matches. No one knew much of Kieron Pollard before the weekend, few know of Jos Buttler - it may hasve been different.
FTRE, I read reports that Jones had bowled well and he took 3 wickets. What is the point in paying his expenses, if there is no intention to play him?
I haven't seen a good thing written about Banks, on this site, so why does anyone think he should have been selected above Waller?
Haven't had a chance to post since the weekend. Great to be involved in the tournament but disappointed in the performances. Would have been difficult even if we played well but not to have played in the last 3 games is frustrating.
A lot has been said about JL and his performances here and throughout the season have been poor hence the reason (I think) he is retiring. He doesn't seem to be the player he was. He has been great for us however but it is time to move on.
Looking at our team I was impressed with young Buttler and Wes should be in the team all the time IMHO full stop. I think that Banks will get released which means 6 players will have left since start of 2009 and only Kartik coming in. Hopefully we can get at least 2 in to supplement what we have.
"However, two things, we have no idea how Jos would have performed had been put in at the deep end, but we could have tried it. "
I would not have opened with Jos. But I think the salient point is that we COULD be all but certain about how Langer would perform - that is, that he would fail. Personally, I would not have brought Langer out for this tournament at all, let alone allowed him to open the batting in all these games. I suspect the club brought him mainly because of uncertainty about Marcus's participation. But I'd have had Zander or Pete or whoever ready to step in if Marcus could not do the tour.
I have to confess that I made a good amount of money by betting against Langer in every game of this tournament - that is selling his individual runs spread. That's an indication of exactly how certain I was that he would not score.
And before everyone points out that the rest of the top-order batsmen mainly failed in all the games as well (Zander was an exception in one game) the point is that THEIR failures, IMO, were not entirely predictable in the way that Langer's failures were.
Quite apart from his lack of T20 runs in our own domsetic season, we also had the guy's own honest admission that 'the hunger has gone.' So with little form and little hunger, how did anyone think he was going to score any runs? It was not going to happen.
One thing I will say, though, is that I thought the initial taactics of simply batting through Lee's opening spell was the correct one - I thought Langer got that right, except they abandoned the tactic slightly too soon. With a load of wickets in hand, I think we could have got after the likes of Bollinger and Henriques, plus the wrist-spinner, Smith.
CP has put up the link to the story about Craig in yesterday's Telegraph. I saw it, and saw right next to it a piece about a bomb scare in Bangalore, delaying the match for 2 hours. I know we were in Hyderabad, but it is still a little nerve tingling, don't you think (not looking for excuses)?

Speak for yourself!
I watched him play in the last seven ODIs between England and West Indies.
Again Tim (and yes, I've read your whole post; why not try reading all of mine!) you make it very hard to take your opinions on the game seriously when you suggest that the performance of a 22-year-old with 15 ODIs and 10 T20Is behind him is justification for risking the confidence of a 19-year-old with not even a domestic one-day game behind him: especially when you then claim (and this is presumable without ever having seen him play or read an opinion of his play by anyone other than his own coaches) that he has " that raw ability to take the gane away from NSW". Based on what?
If you weren't given to such hyperbole, it would be so much easier to support you more often.
Perhaps you could enlighten me as to what you could possibly have seen in this game which told you Joss was the man to open a T20 innings against Brett Lee.
Initially, I thought about possibly opening up with Wes and Pete in the PP, but when I read Allan Donald's description of the pitch, I did rather think better of it.
In the event, I thought Craig looked much better playing 'normally,' vs Brett Lee than he had done trying to bat in helter-skelter mode in the other games.
I think Tim probably means the CC game against Lancashire, when Jos batted nicely for his 30 runs.
With all due respect I still don't think it would have been fair to him asking him to face a pumped up Brett Lee.
I may be wrong.
Who knows?
Frome Exile The scorecard of his one Pro40 outing is here.
Perhaps you could enlighten me as to what you could possibly have seen in this game which told you Joss was the man to open a T20 innings against Brett Lee.
He fielded very well and showed great maturity and self confidence. Clearly he was picked for this game and the 20/20 to give him experience, but primarliy due to his past performnces.
Thanks, Jim, but I didn't see that innings, I'm just basing my judgement on his demeanor, when I did see him.
Quite honestly I don't think it was fair on JL to play him, he's so out of form. Each time he batted I hoped he'd prove me wrong for the sake of success, maybe that's why he played, because he was capable of doing some serious damage.
I also read your posts Tim and although you seem to miss bits (possibly based on your not reading my posts because of past history) where I agree with you. I did try and discuss your stuff point by point.
You can't say "this player should play and that player shouldn't because of their record" in one part of your stuff and then just arbitrarily appoint another player to possibly the most important post in a side batting first against a fearsome bowling attack by saying you base it on his 'demeanor".
I commentated on both Jos's outings for Somerset and although I am no expert I saw nothing in either situation that suggested he should be opening a T20 quarter final match (effectively) in a foreign country on his third outing. Obviously no-one else in the county setup believed that should be the case either.
It was good that he was included and did a good job but I doubt it would have been anything but mentioned in passing had he not been
AG's point is valid, We had a pretty good idea how Justin would be able to play and should possibly have changed the front end but your insistence that this crazy idea was the only true solution just undermines the other things you say.
Well when you're not undermining that yourself by concentrating on perceived slights to you personally deeply hidden within every post that doesn't agree entirely with you.
Ronniesabre I think that Banks will get released which means 6 players will have left since start of 2009 and only Kartik coming in.
4 Academy players have signed their first professional contracts since the start of 2009, ronnie, so that's them effectively coming in, too. And there's the bowler signed after his trial matches (sorry, can't remember his name) so I don't think "6 out, 1 in" tells quite the whole story.
Just on the 'informed content' Grizz and Congar. Of course you can make perfectly informed ponts without being at the games - if you couldn't then most of the discussions on here would be left to those who have retired.
I think you miss my point. I have no problem with that - I do it myself. However I am always grateful to the content provided by those who actually were at the game. Especially if it gives me an insight into the situation that I couldn't get - improved my information.
In the situations referred to however, even though eye witness information gave an insight into the real life position (for example we drew a game because we lost a day and a half to rain and the opposition were battening down the hatches and refusing to play anything at all for four hours on the final afternoon). IF that information put an opposite slant on the premis put forward that the draw was entirely to do with the pitch with all other aspects being marginalised. Then it was ignored and the comments of Vic Marks - commenting from a test match some 150 miles away was presented as the only evidence of relevance (because it promoted the premis).
That I'm afraid gentlemen in NOT "informed comment" IMHO nor does it respect the opinions of other posters with better information because they were there and can provide something that should be included in the equation but rarely has been by one side of the debate.
That is where the lack of respect comes from and that is where the frustration of some posters boils over and also why the whole issue has become a bit of a joke on here even though some aspects of it have relevance.
Either way, I agree with Ronnie, we need to find a few extra decent performers with some experience because our squad looks thin (I'm assuming that Jones will definitely move on, along with Caddick and that Durston and Banks may do so.)
I'm not saying we wouldn't necessarily benefit from the addition of a bit of experience with the new ball: that's why I'm advocating an approach for Hoggy. I'm just saying that the in-out ratio isn't as stark as it was made to look.
And I do think we need to take the long view and be consistent with ourselves as fans, to an extent. It's a little schizophrenic to rail about the lack of opportunities given to the likes of Wes Durton,Gareth Andrew, Rob Woodman, Matt Wood, Neil Edwards etc, and to then demand new signings to come in ahead of the next crop of youngsters that we haven't even seen yet.
To change the subject a little, how do people feel about the experiment with Kieswetter opening in one day cricket? Personally, without any statistical evidence to back this up, I have the impression that he has not really starred as an opener over an extended period of time. Perhaps he should be returned to the middle order and Suppiah or somebody else shunted to the opening slot.
Of course, Edwards and Langer are both gone now, so options for opener seem to be limited to Trescothick and Suppiah.
Just to be clear FE my original post should have said since 2009 and not the start. By my reckoning all 4 academy players were signed at the satrt of 2009 as was David Stiff. Therefore with 6 players leaving and only 2 (Kartik and as you point out Hayman arriving) that still leaves us 4 short on last season (Durston could also leave so it could be more).
I think that gives a deficiency in terms of numbers and also experience. I think if we could recruit a couple of experienced players, and I'm with you on the Hoggy acquisition then that would re-dress the balance somewhat. Im all for playin g younger players and giving them a chancebut you haveto nurture them.
Anyway the JL "THANK YOU" message more or less said that acquisitions of an experienced nature will be required as Somerset are to use his phrase at a"crossroads"
I've said for a while that I think there's been a collective short-cut in thought processes around 'keepers opening since Gilchrist came on the scene.
And in Somerset's case, with Banger up top, I don't necessarily feel there's a need for another "dasher" at two anyway. I'd be just as happy with someone who doesn't necessarily hit the cover off it, but who faces very few dot balls whilst being capable of punishing the bad ball. Of the current staff, perhaps Durston fits that bill as well as anyone?
I'm a big fan of fluidity in limited overs batting line-ups, so Arul and Craig could split three and four dependant on situation, who's out etc.
I'm not all bothered if folk disagree with me, so long as they are polite.
What amazed me is that I followed about the 1st four pages of this thread, which seemed to fairly well slate our tactics, then I join in with my opinions and all of a sudden the focus is on disagreeing with me.
I suspected I might have been being a little bit too "literal" in my interpretation of your post ronnie. No great disagreement between us really, but I'm not sure I can tally six definite leavers from the 2009 Squad, without including two out of Banks, Jones and Durston?
Caddick, Langer, Gazzard, Edwards: who else?
edit: Reading that back I see I've had my wires crossed?!?!
Your 6 are my four, plus you're assuming Steff is a done deal, and that Banks won't be retained?
Have I got the right end of your stick, now?

Don't get me wrong; I wasn't campaigning for change necessarily. And because of the blinkered thinking I mentioned above applying to England selectors as much as to anyone else, I think his shortest route to international honours is to succeed at the top of the order.
If I were being hypercritical, think I'd hesitate to describe Craig's performances as an undiluted success though AG.
Average - excellent: strike rate - excellent. But they do mask a little bit of "feast or famine" - 9 scores of 50 or more from 44 List A innings are offset by 13 single figure efforts.
I also had the notion that he tended to succeed when Marcus succeeded, but it didn't take much research to quash what was clearly a muddled recollection.
On the subject of who opens with Tres...What about Trego? I like the idea of aggressive batters in during field restrictions. That is not to suggest that Kies has not been a qualified success this year.
Regarding having to attend matches in order to qualify to make comment. I live in Edinburgh, I have been to Taunton on one occasion only (out of season). The only time I've seen the team in the "flesh" is at the annual slaughter up here. I follow Somerset on SKY and Cricinfo. Like you I also share your disappointment when the team performs poorly. A good forum is about opinion....As long as it's keep in reasonable language!
They're actually somewhat better than Trescothick's first 44 List A innings, AG. (9 50+ and 16 single-figures, I think, with both players having some games opening and some at 4/5/6).
As I say, I was being hypercritical.
Grockle - you say..... "That I'm afraid gentlemen in (is ?) NOT "informed comment" IMHO nor does it respect the opinions of other posters with better information because they were there and can provide something that should be included in the equation but rarely has been by one side of the debate."
That being the case, why are posters sympathetic to the 'problem' pitch issue regularly ridiculed/pilloried for their views, despite the fact they are largely echoing those publically expressed by JL/BR/MT etc., all of whom are there all the time & whose comments presumably qualify as being "informed" ?
FE.....you've got it. Obviously, Ive included Banks and Jones in my calculations. After the CL20/20 I would be amazed if Banks was retained and Im sure I read somehere that Derby had agreed a 2 year contract with Steff(his face looked like thunder in that game yesterday too when the camera was on him).
As you say I don't think we are in too much dis-agreement.
I just hope Durston is offered (and signs) a new contract. Ive always been a fan.
CricInfo lists 25 names in our squad (as compared with 27 in 2008), but that doesn't include Hayman (now signed), or Calum Hagget, Jack Leach and Lewis Gregory, who have all played four or more Second XI Championship matches.
If you look at things another way, and add those four names to the 25, you could argue that 29 is too many for a 1stXI/2ndXI squad and that it had to be reduced.
Maybe?
Obviously there may be an influence from the ECB's new funding model being felt here, too.
Steff, Ben, Charl and Alfie would be a pretty costly attack to put out from next year.
I take it the 25 includes the 6 we are talking about. If it does and we lose them then we would have a thin (in experience terms) squad. I think you'll find that apatrt from the 11 playing on Sunday plus Benny Phil, Kartik and Turner and Stiff and Munday are all novices. If we got injuries it would be a struggle I think.
Re Kieswetter: I see his career stats in one day are very good. In List A he has an average of 39.47 with a strike rate of 88. In T20 he averages 22.78 with a strike rate of 130.
My question would still be: how many of these runs did he get lower in the order and how many at opener? I have the impression that he scored heavily when he was coming in at 6 or so in the early part of his career, but has scored less heavily at opener. I may be wrong about this. I don't know if somebody with detailed access to his stats when opening and when coming in lower could confirm or contradict this. I only have Cricinfo, which appears only to give his first and last innings.
His first list A, by the way was 69 n.o. scored coming in eighth. His first T20 was an innings of 48 (run out) coming in at 5. Extended success in the middle order and less at opener (if this assumption is correct) would suggest that he might be better suited to batting lower down.
I'm explaining why the specific posters who operate without allowing a debate about the pitch issue sometimes get a raw deal. You seem fixed on the item itself. You support what I see as unsupportable with no explanation as to why and continue to just go back to how nasty the one side of this interaction are.
So forget it mate. Believe or see what you want - it seems there is no central meeting point in this.
When a person is discussing the situation (like Clarence for example) replying to points made then the item is discussed -it may not be resolved but it is discussed. I refute your statement that people are 'regularly pilloried'
When the same point is constantly referred to BUT only when the evidence fits the premis and no attempt is made to discuss it when the evidence doesn't then what is there to discuss? What is the point? where is the mutual respect for both sides of the argument?
I'm not responsible for every poster's actions on here and I don't have the perfect answer for you. You clearly don't agree with my explanation so let's call it a day and stop wasting everyone else's time while we go around and around a house that has been circled for three years shall we?
If you dislike the way the issue is discussed then maybe you should involve yourself with both sides of the argument next time it is brought up and put your points to the posters then. It will return, you can put your house on it.
I think I'm done with this I'm afraid.

Exiled Tim I'm not all bothered if folk disagree with me, so long as they are polite.
What amazed me is that I followed about the 1st four pages of this thread, which seemed to fairly well slate our tactics, then I join in with my opinions and all of a sudden the focus is on disagreeing with me.
Yes you are the focus of the whole posting population (?)
Or is it just that you continue to tie yourself in knots trying to defend an indefensible suggestion even when everyone who comments disagrees?
Why can't you just say - "yep you're all right it was a daft suggestion" when it quite obviously was?
Please don't answer because it will only be about how you have every right to say what you want (and you do but some things should be said once and left there) or how misunderstood you are and how you don't care what people think when you quite obviously do.
Give it up mate. It WAS a daft suggestion and you really aren't going to convince anyone otherwise. People comment because you try to defend something that can't be and then mark it down to Tim persecution once more.
It really isn't. If you leave it alone so will others.
Well I suppose AG, FE, FTRE and BJ were all responding with glowing praise but there ya go.
I tried to discuss things with you. I even agreed with part of what you said but most of what returns is the usual 'why is everyone picking on me?' 'Why are you picking on me?'.
You go on about how much you're going to say even if you are in the minority but when it is pointed out that you are in the minority (and only on one main point in these commmentaries I think) you simply don't adapt you just get petulant and whingy about how people (and finally me alone) are picking on your posts.
I don't think we have. I think we discussed the points and gave you reasons why your theory for Jos Buttler was daft. You went into persecution mode almost immediately and from then on its just 'Neh Neh Neh' and so on.
Fine go for it. I'll keep telling you how it is and you can keep going on about how it's my website and I can do what I like and all the other childlike comments
And you know? It is and I can.

Going back to Kieswetter, I have now checked this season's Pro40 and FP scorecards, and have to bow to AGod's superior wisdom concerning his ability to open. He did especially well in the FP.
FP 2009: 395 runs at 65.83 average, with two centuries.
Well Grockle, yesterday you told me it was me that was being over sensitive. Could it possibly be your turn ?!
I'm not fixated on the issue, but when something is said that I disagree with, I say so & try to support that with my own 'facts' (or 'opinions' - depending on how you look at it). There are enough facts in the stats re the scores at Taunton in 2009 to fill a book ! How you or I, or anyone else choose to interpret them of course is a different matter entirely.
I don't think I've been a shrinking violet, but I try to challenge things I don't agree with - hopefully in a reasonable manner.
My question yesterday, was, I thought, a reasonable one re the views of MT/JL & BR constituting 'informed opinion' which you often raise as integral to the pitch debate & was being discussed on the thread at the time.
I'm honestly not clear whether you disagree with their publically expressed views or not & would be genuinely interested as to why, if indeed that is the case. Hence the question I asked.
As for nobody being pilloried, others have also commented recently re the way in which contrary views are responded to. Maybe they are also just over sensitive like me !

Exiled Tim You perceive me to be in the minority Grockle, but what would happen to anyone openly supporting my views?
I don't know Tim - does anyone?
Do you think the "Jos Buttler to open in Indian T20 Campaign" has a secret branch afraid to say anything because of big bad Uncle Joe? Do YOU perceive that you aren't in a minority?
Yet another of your circular arguments - nasty Grockles cutting off free speech from the poor downtrodden masses who support the great innovative thinking of the Exile?
Hey well let's trot out the circular answer - Exiles.com! Solves many many difficulties for you it seems and allows those people afraid to express themselves to do so freely away from the repressive regime practiced here. Long Live the revolution. Buttler shall be king!
Grizz - my opinion is all over the 'killing cricket' thread (threads). It's been repeated so often that it would be a waste of time to repeat it once again and take over another thread with that particular debate or lack of it. So I'll refer you and EH to answers I've given on more than a few moments ago :-)

Grizzly - I think the view of some here with respect to Rose and Langer and their comments on the pitch is that there is a possible motive for them to over-egg the pitch issue as a reason for us drawing games, as opposed to other contributing factors.
For example, if the draws are Mr Frost's fault, then that rather absolves Mr Rose of possible blame for failing to sign or develop enough sufficiently good bowlers and rather absolves Langer of blame for taking a defeatist attitude to the task of taking wickets on our pitches and/or displaying insufficient tactical acumen.
In other words, we are drawing all these home games partly because the pitches ARE very flat, partly because the bowling is not penetrative enough and (IMO) partly because Langer has encouraged and perpertuated a defeatist attitude to the task of taking wickets at home. Inclement weather is, of course, a further factor.
I thought this shindig in India would be a party,an end of season exclusive jamboree.
I thought we'd all be happy, all praising the efforts of the boys for just getting there.
How wrong I was.
Furthermore, until very recently (as in a few weeks ago) Brian Rose's stated opinion has always been some version of;
"The most important thing in Division One is not to lose games."
If that's the mindset at the very top then that is likely to materially affect player acquisitions (i.e the type of player that we sign), team selection, tactics AND pitch preparation (to the extent that the Groundsman has much control over the way the pitch plays.)

Once we were there Jim, it became serious business with all the money and prestige at stake.
I wanted us to show the world what a devastating team we can be. Alas we didn't perform to anything like our true potential, but it's all gone now and we look forward to next season, having learned a great deal from the last couple of weeks.
"When a person is discussing the situation (like Clarence for example) replying to points made then the item is discussed -it may not be resolved but it is discussed."
Sorry, Grockle, but my mind is somewhat befuddled again.
Have I done something right or wrong again? - I can't decide, so could you kindly explain for the benefit of me please?
Of course not! But if T&T beat the Cobras today, would the fact that the only teams we lost to would then be contesting the final put a slightly different slant on our CLT20 performance?

While I like your logic here sir, it is also roughly the same mechanism used by Scotland to claim they were Football world champions when they beat England (World cup holders) in 1967. As such, it must be thrown out.
Yeah: you're right, I know!
It was a little piece of hyperbole, for effect.
But the serious point behind it was that our losses to both T&T and NSW could, and perhaps should, be viewed more sympathetically now than they were at the time.
Obviously we weren`t the third best team, but the subsequent performances of NSW and T.&T. demonstrated that were not the 12th worst either. Our win over the bookies` tournament favourites also enabled us to double our money, with a little help from T.&T.
I certainly know of 16 other English counties that would not have minded being in Somerset`s shoes for two weeks in October 2009.
Ilya Kuryakin - was in his section when a boy! Did you know David McCallum's part was supposed to be a walk on and Napoleon Solo was supposed to be the 'solo' M from U?
I read this article earlier and chuckled a little with the following.
Quote:
Andy Nash "I used to think we had done well to get 6,000 Somerset fans in England. We have to set ourselves much more ambitious targets for reaching fans in India and work out how we reach out to them."
Reading the Indian Cricket forum on this network, we seem to have a long way to go,I do hope those posters were the minority.
Perhaps Blackacre are looking to sell eggs in India.
Joking apart, I assume the comment was about marketing the Club, via Membership, or other profit making ideas, as a lot of the football clubs are doing.
I read that piece and despaired. I do not reach for the smelling salts because we play with a white ball or because we play in coloured clothing but if I want a "Elvis Presley concert" I'll choose it. Reading it again makes me think that cricket has lost all that made it special.
I'm rapidly turning into disgruntled of Newcastle.
It would be good to have a multi-cultural atmosphere at Taunton, with food stalls selling curry, jerk chicken, etc. We could all learn some new experiences and welcome all nationalties to our great club (but no whistles, please!).
Give me Under Milk Wood everytime.
Nash,as history shows,is a man driven by money,it is obviously his God.
It would be a shame if the game is devalued further, its got the right balance now.
Mind you in Nash's world what do we count for as fans?
Llareggub.
As Dylan might have said.
Edited to try and correct spelling mistakes.

How predictable that one of the best and most positive national newspaper articles to come out of the Somerset camp for many a moon - not to mention its splendid metaphors - should get the blinkered thumbs down, along with the odd gratuitous insult or two, from some although not all.
Settle for cosy (and in the end, you will find, totally negative) marketing and the game we love will enter its death throes.
cricketjerry-mouse Comparing Andy Nash with his predecessor, for a start.
What's your problem, Jeremy?
Why should a comparison with his predecessor (now of course, the Chairman of the EWCB, and the new Messiah of English cricket) be regarded by you as an insult?
Furthermore, if that is "one of the best and most positive national newspaper articles to come out of the Somerset camp for many a moon", then perhaps the club should appoint an official Public Relations Officer, instead of seemingly leaving such a role to you to undertake.
Exiled Tim It would be good to have a multi-cultural atmosphere at Taunton, with food stalls selling curry, jerk chicken, etc. We could all learn some new experiences and welcome all nationalties to our great club (but no whistles, please!).
Great idea, especially if someone sets up a stall selling Masala Dosas.
"If you compare the match we played against the Deccan Chargers the spectator experience was like an Elvis Presley concert."
If you compare the Deccan Chargers match with all our other matches in India it was Elvis versus Des (and from his statement I guess Mr Nash will not invite Des to visit Taunton for a summer concert).
How are we being left behind? The customer experience? Experience of what - the cricket, the atmosphere, both, what?
How to attract overseas players? Is he asking for MORE than we attract already in COUNTY cricket?
"I used to think we had done well to get 6,000 Somerset fans in England". Doesn't he think so anymore?
"A lot of members are still on smelling salts that we are playing with a white ball." Some of those members might be coughing up annual membership dosh between now and the next few months, best not to alienate any I would have thought.
"Cricket is business in India and our business is cricket." - YUK!!!!
He's just had his head turned by meeting Modi and listening to all of his bilge.
As you suggest, Tractor, a great many of the games in the CL were played out in front of the 'one man and his dog,' that Willis and his ilk always say watch our CC games at Taunton.
It's quite worryng what Nash is implying.
The marginalisation of the hardcore supporter, the traditional supporter, has surely gone far enough.
If they want to lose that core support then go ahead, turn it into a Benny Hill parody of what cricket should be.
When the novelty wears off,as it definitely will, then who will they come crying to,with the begging letters asking for your membership fees?
Leave it alone Mr Nash.
The sharks,Stanfordesque style, will be circling already.
Be very careful where you take this.
Cricket is not a drinks company and it is not the plaything of a few very rich men.
Be very careful.
Maybe one of the main problems with our T20 do's is that they have that feel of being organised by "the awkward Uncle dancing at the wedding disco"syndrome.
You get the feel that fop haired, goofy teethed, middle aged men are trying to say,"there you go kiddywinkles, have some fun with the cowboys and Indians.Whilst we're at it,have some fireworks too".
If it's going to be down there with the KIDZ then let the right people organise it.
Get the ECB as far away from it as possible and let people who specialise in this sort of thing run it.(the ECB would of course control the purse strings)
Then, maybe it wouldn't have the Des O'Connor feel.
I hope it wouldn't have the Elvis feel either.
He has, after all, been dead for over 30 years.
Get real Andy baby.
Times,they are a changing.
As Dylan might have said.
What you have to realise about Benny Hill and Carry On, is that people nowadays believe that is 'classic comedy' from the 'golden era' of British comedy.
What does that say about perceptions about 30 years ago? What does that indicate about British comedy now 30 years after that money making stuff was allowed to take over the market?
God help us if T20 is the ONLY Classic cricket of 2039!
For what it's worth, I think Andy Nash is mostly right, e.g. "Twenty20 is yet another English invention which we have allowed others to capitalise on".
Not sure how he intends to expand the Somerset fanbase, however. Particularly not in India now they have seen us getting crushed three times in a row without anybody (except Durston) reliably scoring at above a run a ball.
Nash banging on about how we need to develop a fan base in India is the equivalent of me deciding to launch a project to find documentary proof of the existence of the tooth-fairy. It shows no grasp of reality whatsoever. It may be a little worrying that we have somebody who can be divorced from reality in such a position.
Whilst I'd agree that it's difficult to see a ready-made market for SCCC items in India, mayeb with the right marketing this could happen.
We should also look closer to home, as there are is a huge population of Indians, West Indians, etc in this country and why shouldn't they adopt Somerset as their chosen cricket team?
ET: I get the impression that Indians, being a patriotic lot, are always likely to support Indian teams ahead of teams representing their former colonialist oppressor. Have you seen Laagaan? Or Gandhi, for that matter?
By the way, Laagaan is a truly great cricket movie for those who haven't seen it. But if you watch it you'll see what I mean about Indian patriotism: the British are not exactly painted in glowing colours ...
It is a great movie China - some good tunes in it as well. As much as the Brits are shown in a very very poor light, I can't say it was probably very far from the truth in parts of our Indian history.
I think the Asian community are far more likely to choose Warwickshire or Leicestershire or one of the home counties ET.
As Greg Proops asked during a visit to the Brewhouse a couple of years ago. Is this where WASP's come to die?
Good to hear our Chairman is on the ball in that article. Hopefully we can improve the T20 experience for the curious.I've a lot of respect for Mike Burns as a cricketer but his career in public entertainment must surely be over.
He also talked about fast bowlers and Somerset couldn’t match two other teams for speed, at least next year as captain he now know not to blame everything on the Taunton pitches like Mr Langer did and Mr Rose do.
"We certainly learned a few harsh truths at Somerset, the first being that we could not match the pace bowling served up by New South Wales and Victoria.
Both those sides had three bowlers sending down deliveries at 85mph-plus and in Brett Lee’s case 90mph. Our seamers were nearer 80mph and that is a huge difference."
Is this statement even true?
I don't recall Bollinger being particular quick against us? Clark certainly isn't. Yes, they had Brett Lee who is fast, but who were the "three," bowlers doing this for NSW???? Surely not Henriques?
I think this statement, as it applies to NSW is simply untrue.
We did not play Victoria, so I don't think we learned anything 'harsh,' from them.
Yeah, but the speed gun was out on the coverage wasn't it?
It certainly was during the Ashes and there is no way in hell that Clark regularly bowls at 85+. Henriques looking medicore and military medium. So where are their three 85+ bowlers?
I couldn't agree more about the misguided obsession with pace. Ducan Fletcher was one of the main culprits and I suspect in previous eras Matthew Hoggard's international career would have been longer.
Medium pace bowling is something of a lost art; Somerset of course has the greatest of them all; six paces, keeper standing up, 100 wickets a season over and over again.
In some ways PT is a throwback to that kind of bowler and it's very unfair he is overlooked, sometimes by his own captain when he has rare ability.
It's not completely gone from the international scene if you look at bowlers like Hilfenhaus and Clark, neither of whom were quick at all. Chaminda Vaas had no pace but got players out consistently.
I think the real change is that opening bowlers are no straining for that extra pace and suffering injuries when in the past they might have bowled in a more sustainable way; think Lee, Butler, the Rawalpindi Express.
It's possible harder modern pitches are offering less to medium pacers, Taunton certainly is but that shouldn't mean a key type of player is excluded.
Collingwood who we often talk about was orginally a batting allrounder but the obsession with pace has seen him marginalised to England's detriment I think..
