T20 the Quarter Final!! Somerset Bowled Over

A rained off Tuesday T20 QF against Lancashire led to an attempt to play the game on the reserve day. But there was a dispensation for a game on Thursday morning which put off the evening game (when something competitive might have happened as it turned out). The counties gambled and the weather beat them and then........

v Lancashire T20 QF @ Old Trafford Tuesday - Thursday 28th to 30th July 2009

A large crowd on Tuesday came to see the 'Mighty Lancashire' at 'Fortress Old Trafford' destroy the Somerset upstarts on their way to the Finals that they were 'hot favourites' for.

They met this;

Watching the Durham v Kent game (not a great night for IDB with the bat - run out for 0 - decent figures with the ball though) and thinking back to being saved by the rain after being mauled by Notts with the bat. Do we need a real think about the make-up if tmorrow night's side.

Especially taking into account our awful performances in front of the cameras this year?

Marcus, Craig, Peter, Alfonso Charl, Arul, Zander

make the side for me and then.....

Who are the other 5 (well 4 because one other place is taken I suppose although I'm not ttally sure myself).

Side will be...

MT, JL, ZB, JH, CK, PT, AS, BP, AT, OB or MW, CW.

Only choice appears to be between Max and Omari, assume Max if he's fit, Omari if not.

JL will open again i imagine. Sell out at Old Trafford apparently too

Clarence Parker

Brian Rose has said that "it will probably come down to a straight choice between Max Waller and Omari Banks", depending on whether the former is ready after several weeks on the sidelines.

RadstockRob
27/07/2009 20:44
What's happening tomorow?

Grockle
27/07/2009 21:18
Max has a rep in this year's competition. If he can't play it ught t be Wes. Arul is a better spinner than he was because he's had time in the middle. As you say Omari is rusty and Wes is a better batsman and fielder in these short games.

Also surprised they didn't consider Andy - simply because he has less pace than he did and a bowler's brain. But Ben is a good idea if you're not gonna gamble. Glad to see Turner and Stiff not considered.... Pace and T20 do not mix that well.

It's the T20 Quarter Final BR...keep up

Dont think Caddy has any interest in 20-20 somehow.

Guessing Max will play otherwise cant see point in him being in the squad, if he's not fit today unlikely to be tomorrow?

Assume ticket details for finals day will be out tomorrow evening......?

What is T20? Something new?

Mike TA1
27/07/2009 21:58
Rob it is that game that has stopped us watching cricket this year.

Are the flats all sold since I was last there.

I know of one flat that is sold, a chap sat behind me on the last match said he had bought one on the third floor.

Caddick has never been a proper option in the short game. He wasn't always a bonus in the 40 over stuff.

Just thought, now he's lost some of his pace and because we had dodgy bowlers they might have considered him. But if Ben is fit then he's a better option... I hope. As I said above, T20 isn't for pace bowlers

Grockle
27/07/2009 22:20
Yep Durham fell apart after keeping Kent down to just over 150 and Sussex blew the Bears out for about 120. Durham only managed 93

Lancashire got the usual big sell for tomorrow night from Colville (is this man ever worth listening to?). It seems that Langer and his men will have their wrk cut out against the mighty Lancashire who have put all comers to the sword in this competition. While we of course have beaten no-one and don't really deserve to take the same field as the Great Red Rose.

Let's hope its a repeat of the last time SKY commentators treated us like the 'plucky provincials' up from the fields for a day out with the big boys. That was the 2005 Finals and Lancashire did not take the cup with their name on it home with them!!

If our bowlers show up then we'll be more than a match

cricketjerry-mouse
27/07/2009 22:37
Lancashire captain Glen Chapple misses the match with a stress fracture of the foot.

The side will be captained by Mark Chilton, who interestingly was in charge when we beat Lancs in the 20/20 final at The Oval. On that occasion he elected to bat in very damp conditions totally favourable to bowlers and brilliantly exploited by Caddy and Richard Johnson.

The Lancashire 12-man squad is: Horton, Smith, Laxman, Du Plessis, Croft, Chilton, Cross, Hogg, Mahmood, Parry, Keedy, Newby. Three spinner then: Keedy, Parry, and Du Plessis.

Turner isn't tight enough for this stuff and anything loose in a T20 goes for loads. I'm worried by about the rest after Trent Bridge last weekend.

I'm glad they've left him out - we need to play him when we think he is of the most use because he only manages one game at a time with a fortnight off in between to get over injury :-(

(Sm72)

AGod
28/07/2009 17:11
Yeah, I think a customarily quick pitch is when he would be most use though!

It's a big test tonight. It's the third one-day quarter-final we've played in the last 14 months or so.

In the previous two, only Craig Kieswetter has really stood out in both making 90 odd and a ton. Too many others have been quiet in those games. I think it's time that Hildreth stepped forward in a big game.

To be honest, I think whichever team bats first will win.

Grockle
28/07/2009 17:49
Well presently they might only have 5 overs to do it in because it looks nasty in Lancs I'm afraid at "Fortress Old Trafford". Seems we don't travel well according to Lloyd.

But he reckons we'll win the thing so that's us dead and buried :-(

"I'm glad they've left him out - we need to play him when we think he is of the most use because he only manages one game at a time with a fortnight off in between to get over injury."

Sounds as though you don't rate Mark Turner very highly then, Grockle.

I have to say that I had serious doubts a couple of years ago as to whether or not he would prove to be a valuable long - term signing for us. Sadly, nothing that he has produced since (despite the huge amount that Somerset has invested in him) has caused me to reconsider my doubts.

Anyway, let's hope that everyone is firing on all cylinders tonight to guide us to the semi finals at least.

Grockle
28/07/2009 17:53
I don't rate his ability to stay fit very highly. It's difficult to assess his ability when he can only manage one game a fortnight.

When he's been in the middle for a month non stop then I think we may have a better opinion of what he's worth but we need a consistent and reliable bowler.

I hope it works out OK with the 5.30 start.

David Lloyd said the rules allows for play to take place between 10am – 8pm, but the umpire on the field announced 5.30 start to allow for those who have ticket to come after work.

I do hope it is not raining at 5.30 and they could have played earlier in the day.

Summer has been cancelled, Grockle. Again. The Met Office have now offically re-canted on their 'barbecue summer,' prediction. Weather likely to be very poor until September, just like the past two years.

So come on then, everybody, who are your five for this bowl-out GARBAGE?

I'm going with Alfonso (can bowl good yorkers), Hildreth (bowls wicket to wicket), Tresco (ditto), Charl (doesn't use his full height in his action so, hopefully, won't bounce it over the top despite being tall man,) and, I guess, Arul.

I wish we had more than just alfonso as a top yorker man as I think yorkers are the way to go in bowl-outs.

I've not picked Pete because I think it will swing like a banana in the indoor cricket school and I've not picked Ben because those indoor strips tend to be bouncy and he's so tall that he would have a job not to bounce it over the stumps, even if he gets the line right.

It certainly looks hopeless at Old Trafford`s swan lake.

But the umpires had no authority to call it off tonight, in the light of this morning`s request by both Lancashire and Somerset, not just by the home county, for the ECB to designate tomorrow as a second reserve day.

So it looks like beating Lancs in a bowl-out, and then Kent, potentially the best side still left, in the semis to have a chance of repeating that 2005 success.

Cheers medears....hoping for a couple of hours of rain in Birmingham so SKY show the game at a wonderfully dry Manchester instead.

SKY not predicting a start at the Brum game until mid afternoon because of the state of the outfield. If OT is the same it's indoor school time!!

Very good point,Congar.
And Rob has a point too.
I have to say that I had Allan or Steff in mind though Adrian of course could have knocked all three stumps out of the ground with one delivery.
Steff is a superb"death"bowler,he has been asked to bowl at many a West Wales funeral, and would have been ideal in a bowl off.
Let's hope it doesn't come down to that.
Starting to rain again here now.

Yes, we know the outfield was very wet and the forecast was better for this afternoon, so why, oh why, did we go for an 11AM start - less drying time and worse forecast?

Grockle
30/07/2009 10:51
Because we have to get back to Taunton for the LVCC match tomorrow and I think Lancashire are away as well. That was what was said yesterday anyway.

Give the organisers credit for trying to get a game at all AG. This is a dispensation. We should have 'bowled off' yesterday under the rules.

If we don't get a game it isn't because the organisers were not trying to be flexible for the sake of the game.

Well it's throwing it down here and according to Cricinfo the start is delayed so...indoor school seems favourite! I wonder if they'll film it as the Ashes is not on?

Hope not - people might enjoy it and the organisers may see an opportunity to introduce a new short form of 'cricket' and we'll have 'Bowl Offs' as the new idea in 2010.

Grockle
30/07/2009 12:14
Yes I understand that FE. That's the time when the 5 over thrash needs to start isn't it? As Dasher outlines, given the position at Edgbaston, which is a bit further along by the looks of it, I can't see them playing anything on it until 4-ish and that's if it doesn't rain again.

(Sm72)

Frome Exile
30/07/2009 12:16
Oh, right. I see now that any bowl-off is scheduled for 2 apparently, so yes celarly 2.45 is the cut-off finish time.
Apologies.
However, that seems a bit ridiculous, as a full 40 over game which started at 11, went at 12 overs an hour, and had a 10 minute interval would last until 2.30!
All power to everyone for trying to get a game on, but perhaps with hidnsight, a bowl-off last night might have been more prudent!

Frome Exile
30/07/2009 12:23
The fact that the bowl-off will start at two, suggest that at around 1:45 they'll decide that even the 5-over thrash couldn't be concluded by 2:45.
There's obviously a little confusion around, but given that all parties are breaking new ground in trying to get a game on, and are to an extent "making it up as they go along", they should probably be forgiven!

He was the Lancashire captain who decided to bat first in hugely friendly bowling conditions in the 2005 20/20 final against us at The Oval, only to see Caddy and Richard Johnson destroy a top order ot Loye, Flintoff, Symonds and Cork.

Now he misses the stumps twice in the bowl-out. Still, all credit to him for standing up and being counted (or rather not counted) today.

Well played bowled the Somerset chosen ones.

Not a very satisfactory way to progress in a competition, but as we have been on the losing side before in such circumstances, I am happy to take this as simply being our day.

It's not as easy as one thinks to hit the stumps direct, so I feel that to have hit 5 times was a very good effort.

Well done, once again.

Grockle
30/07/2009 14:00
They didn't bowl any more once the thing was decided so they must have missed 5 out of 6 while we hit 5 out of 6. Charl, Thommo and Ben(?) Two of ours and one of theirs didn't need to bowl.... err I think.

One thing, even though it was against vacant stumps, all you can ask a bowler to do is bowl straight and our boys did that so won this one with our suspected weakness which is the nearest thing we'll get to satisfying.

After watching Charl Willoughby against Matt Hoggard a while ago where the batsman was standing at leg watching the bowler unable to hit a set of open stumps for a whole over it isn't such a easy thing to do.

But (in the immortal words of Barry Davies) "Frankly.........who cares?".

Edited after reading the Lancs ball-by-ball summary:

Obviously Grizzzly's post makes mine pretty redundant.

The link does, however, suggest that Ben didn't need to bowl his second ball anyway. They must have been three down with two left at that point.

I think thats it guys. Although our preference is for the longer format and I think I speak for all of us when I say that, there is no doubting the money influence of 20/20. Full house, share of gate, prize money, champions game to be played. We have to be in the mix as if we are not then financially we fall behind.

This could go some way to paying for "our new bowlers for next year" whether we like it or not.

Plus winning is good for morale. roll on the title!!!

The Kent website is reporting that they have been allocated 1,400 tickets for 20/20 finals day. I expect all four counties will get the same - doesn`t sound like very many to me.

Prices are £60 adults; £20 juniors.

Kent are also speculating that the Kent/Somerset semi will be second on, as the ECB always organise the order to suit the fans who have to travel the furthest.

Exiled Tim
31/07/2009 05:41
I think it standard policy for each finalist to get 1600 tickets, which are then allocated in blocks of say 400, so not all our supporters, or kent's will be in the same area. The idea being that when a team get's knocked out, no huge gaps appear, if the supporters all decide to leave early.

Most counties struggle to sell their allocation, as like when we played at the Oval, we had to find a night's accommodation, as the night finishes very late.

Yet again, the Somerset batsmen fail to come to the party and we have to thank our bowlers for our success! In this game v Lancs, none of our batters put in any performance whatsoever - I'm not sure they even turned up. No runs at all from the captain, yet again - what is Brian Rose going to do about that?

When will our vaunted batting line-up show its true worth and actually win us a game? It's always the lower order that has to drag us out of the fire, and Somerset has to rely on its bowlers to pull us through.

A few points;

1) Beefy - you will recall that the late finish at the Oval was partly a function of the rain delay - must have added at least 90 mins to the day, if not 120?

2) We should not start dreaming of investing Champions League riches in fast bowlers or anything like that. And not only because Kent are a good side. The main reason why I say we should not start dreaming yet is - very simply - that we don't know whether or not our players have some contractual arrangement in place in the event of T20 success i.e I often suspsect that a large portion of any prize money won by counties is contractually guaranteed to players as a reward for success. After all, if you think about it, where else are clubs likely to get the money from to pay out 'tournamnet win bonuses,' and things like that.

A further, related, point would be this. Let's say we beat Kent and we don't have to pay our players a bonus out of our £503,000. If the future of the likes of Hoggard are not settled by then, would we want to use that money to start making over-the-odds bids for players? Or would we be better sticking by our 'sensible guns,' and only looking to pay market rates to attract new players.

cricketjerry-mouse

If you count yesterday`s bowl-out success - and I don`t see why you shouldn`t - Somerset have now won more matches in all forms of competition this summer than in any entire season in their long history.

£60 for adults + £20 for children! £140 plus hotel and expenses, an expensive day out. Alas, I cannot get there in time, but the cost is much more than last year, as I recall.

The cricketing authorities need to look at the global economy and price accordingly.

The cost is based on the fact that this is the cash cow of cricket.

If you want this razamatazz to run the game then the punter will pay for it. For the unlucky half of the people it will be 3 hours of hope and then anguish. For the rest it will be 6 hours of stuff they want won't it?

This is the future of cricket. Isn't it? Anyway most people will watch it on SKY so sold out of not the media personnel will get their cut of the wonga.

I'm sure the economists have looked at the size of the ground, the possible demand and priced it according to what they believe the people clamouring for tickets are willing and able to pay to see it. I would have been stunned if they had priced it under £50 though an allocation of family tickets would have been good to see - this is the format to bring the kids to after all? Except of course they don't drink do they? Solution - overprice the food because they DO eat..

Poor admin yet again from the club.
Announcement made last week that tickets would not be available til Monday, that was still the indication on Saturday at the ground from the tanoy.

Then at the ground today they suddenly announce that tickets are on sale in the office.
We apparently only have 1400 allocation so i hope those who are waiting until tomorrow as instructed arent left dissapointed.

1400 out of 22000+ is the normal joke distribution, assuming the other 3 counties have similar allocations then barely 25% of the capacity will include actual supporters of the clubs involved

cricketjerry-mouse
02/08/2009 19:56
It wasn`t poor admin by the club, wsm, so don`t let`s knock them for knocking sake.

They were told by Warwickshire on Friday that the tickets would not reach Taunton until Monday morning - hence the initial announcement that they would go on sale then.

But because of the day-long rain at Edgbaston on Saturday, the Warwickshire admin staff found time on their hands and turned their attention from the Test to sorting out the 20/20 final tickets.

They dispatched Somerset`s ration by courier van on Saturday night - and with a sizeable band of members at the ground today, the went on sale from 10 am.

Still available Monday morning as well.

I stand corrected.
No explanation was published (to my knowledge) as to the bringing forward of the ticket selling but clearly you are more in the know than i am.
I'm ok anyway, being there i got mine today...

And members keen to watch cricket would posibly have been there as well seeing as this was the best predicted day of the four as well WSM so you probably weren't on your own in getting a ticket today.

If you weren't however then I'd get down there early tomorrow because it is a very very small allocation.

For those who haven't yet got to this.

The final has four sides involved in it but only three that can qualify for the World Championships.

Northants cannot take part in the World event because they have a player who has taken part in the ICL (? I think that is the acronym)

IF Northants win their semi then ONLY the other finalist will be able to qualify for that comeptition.

IF Northants don't make it through to the final BOTH sides will qualify.

It makes no difference to us or the other two but there will be no case of a losing semi finalist qualifying because Northants get to the final if you have hears that somewhere.

I thought all the ICL stuff had been cleared up?

If not, how come Kent will get away with it this year when they did not last year e.g. Kemp etc??

Not registered to play this year? Don't ask me. It interests me not one jot but I heard the stuff so thought I'd tell people what I'd heard.

I thought I had heard that a clean slate had been agreed for all ICL players. I suspect that you must be right that what was actually agreed was an amnesty for all those with prior (but not current) involvement with the ICL.

If you recall, Somerset, Middx and Glamorgan were the only counties in the UK that were able to comply with the BCCI's dictates for last year's competition.

SP: May I join FE in congratulating you on what was surely the year's finest and most perceptive post, the one that commented on the lamentable performance of our batsmen at Old Trafford. Rumour has it that they were so arrogant that they didn't even bother to change into their batting kit for the match.

Loverly bit on SKY just now;

The main guy on SKY News Jeremy Thompson is being interviewed about his view on cricket. He was asked the question T20 or Tests?

His reply? "Tests..... T20 is Tapas, it's not a real meal"

Too true my man

Comparing your signature with BO's, BJ, I can only conclude that you are not sufficiently serious.

I only learnt how to do a signature after seeing that you had given yourself one.
Realising it must be very simple I then proceeded, hence my moniker which does look a bit like Bo's.
