New Road Old Weather - LVCC train grinds to a halt.
Make or Break

July 22 2009
A three day game at the swimming pool that is new Road will not see us improve our position in the County Championship unfortunately. Having lost the whole of the first day to rain we are looking for quick wickets against the lowly placed Worcestershire in order to get something relevant from this wet and windy fixture. Andy Caddick returns to complete the usual mid summer line-up for long games
v Worcestershire LVCC1 @ New Road Tuesday 21 July 2009
Worcestershire. The side every one in contention has taken points off stand before us. Unfortunately we don't have time to take them for the maximum unless something miraculous happens because this game is only 75% possible after losing the whole of the first day to rain. The conditions may be useful and they have put us in but we need a huge score on Day 2 and then two good days to try and get them out twice.
There's no time for spin and with Max Waller semi-fit the twelfth man is Omari Banks who may still be in the doghouse after a ball tampering fine in his last seconds game. No consideration of Wes Durston for that role although he was included in the one day game against Notts over the weekend. Still no chink of light for Neil Edwards to squeeze himself in through and with rumours of a bid from a Midlands county for him it may be an issue he doesen't have to worry about next year. Perhaps we will be facing an ex-Somerset opening partnership in away games in 2010. Steffan Jones is also expected to be moving - probably back to Derbyshire after also failing to break in to this close knit squad for four day games. So this eleven have their reputations on the line if they are our best and very little time to do anything about it in this game.
We open in grey and drizzly conditions and reach 81 at lunch without losing a wicket. Banger is on 34 and Arul is on 24 with a huge 20 extras being bowled by the Worcestershire attack including Gareth Andrew.
This will be the game thread (frontpage to link in later). Why name Omari Banks in a squad of 12 on a pitch you expect to seam for both sides?
What is it designed to indicate? Lost me?
Don't expect him to play but it seems a pretty definite statement to Wes Durston if you ask me. One has to assume that as Max does not seem fit Omari, is seen as the next choice and that can't be good news for the Glastonbury man.
It also means our poll majority were incorrect about Somerset's reaction to 'Omarigate' and the man's possibility of a new contractual arrangement perhaps.
Hmmmm.
With Durham 36 points ahead, this has to be seen as our game in hand....we need to win everything up to and including the Notts game to keep the boys up North in sight.
Somerset Seconds have a rare four days of cricket this week -weather permitting. They play a three-day championship match and one-day of Trophy cricket against Middlesex at Radlett C.C.
I`m sure the powers-that-be felt it better for Wes Durston, Neil Edwards, Mark Turner, Ben Phillips, Max Waller and the like to get in four days of cricket there rather than carry the drinks at Worcester.
Ths selection of Omari Banks in the 12 suggests to me that he is the most likely to be surplus to future requirements, rather than the next in line for a Championship place.
If I was Wes, I know where I would rather be playing this week - unless there was a guaranteed Ist XI place.
He certainly deserves to carry the drinks.. for the rest of the season. Perhaps this will be his punishment? Maybe he's simply not trusted to actually play cricket for the IIs anymore?
If you're thinking of the S.Jones of 2005 then have another look Grizz. The Jones who came to the County Ground last season was a number of pounds heavier and a number of yards slower - although he was coming back from another injury.
Although with the Weather Channel stating the cances of precipitation for the next four days at 90, 70, 30 and 60%, I hope your liver (and your wallet!) will cope.

Langer's view of the home pitch is not the definitive statement on it. Many have said it before but results happen. However, with Durham 36 ahead then we would need a reciprocal event where we play and others don't to have a chance.
Still have to beat Notts though whichever way it goes.
So much for the hottest summer on record!!

Grey but dry over Bicknoller pallisades but that's not a lot of good to a place some 70 miles away.....hopeful though. I doubt we'll get enough time to get a result even with some of the over-enthusiastic assessments of our superiority over the Pears.
The big concern at Worcester is, of course, not only what might be coming from above but what might be lying below...
If we do get a start, it's possible that the pitch will do all sorts, in which case if there were actually three clear days a result may be conceivable.
One assumed that they put us in because they expected help for their bowlers.
However, it's also possible that the decision was grounded in cowardice.. that is, they have a weakened attack and maybe the thought of a weakened attack trying to defend a total vs Marcus & co did not fill them with confidence?
I think the inspired video footage alone makes this worth tuning in to!
The singer could well be Peter Dawson, famed for renditions of such classics as The Road to Mandalay, many years before Robbie Williams was even imagined.

I don't know whether it's because I've been doing some or just my mood today but is anyone else unimpressed by the commentator who first of all mispronounced Arul's name (in a completely illogical way) and basically said it didn't matter as long as he got it close. (I can imagine the outrage if a non English commentator kept calling Flintoff "Flontiff").
He was then told the correct pronounciation and continues to call him "Suppeeyah" even after that with no pickup by his companion or anyone else.
Yes but FE I now call him Treego because I was told the true pronunciation. This idiot is still calling him Supeeyah even though he's no longer there!! I also call Zander "de Brain" even though it makes no sense. That's what the guy wants to be called and people ought to respect his wishes.
No problem with people having trouble with names. But first of all IT ISN'T ALRIGHT and you should find out if you can what people are called and secondly once you know what the name is you should attempt to use the correct pronunciation.
Yep there's a hundred for the man with the Bang 168 balls and 20 4's.
It is a nerve FE 'coz iIfind myself having to remind regular Somerset commentators about it. I'll now of course forget them all during the Notts game :-).... and you'll remind me immediately :-(

As you say BJ....Craig is a better bet.

Don't talk about his score... do not voodoo him! The radio people are not too impressed with poor old Gareth I'm afraid.
Yeah the discussion about Craig's eligibility v Steve Davis missed entirely the relevance of Pietersen in context and talked about him simply as an Englishman.
"They were discussing Craig as a potential KP replacement although they know he is not yet available."
Crikey, that's probably a bit previous!? Prior would, I think, be the first one in his sights although I think that Matt has been excellent with the bat, thus far.

KEYS wetter
KIES wetter
KEYSVetter
KIESVwetter
The one it almost certainly isn't, from a technically linguistic perspective, is the first. "KEYS" is the appropriate Germanic pronunciation of "Kies", so logic would suggest that if the first syllable is pronounced "Germanically", then so should be the second, which would require "VETTER".
If we can declare at 400, then we might be able to put them under pressure. Their batting is far stronger than the heavily depleted bowling line-up they've put out for this one - at least on paper - but they may be so demoralised that they might be prepared to go quietly (twice.)
Superb performance so far, well done lads.
Did anyone notice that Langer just scored his 28,000th first class run?
Every one of them for us too I believe.
What a man.
He'd better pop into Spec Savers on the way to the ground tomorrow morning.
Dear BJ
I give you permission to post on this site when Trescothick has scored his next 21 runs, taking him to 1000 for the CC season - but if you're dilatory about it, I'll get in first.
You calling me dilatory?
I may be slow but in no way dilatory.
I'll just copy you.
It's much easier.
I hope that Langer gets practicing his shuffle and flick to cow corner tonight.
That would be a remarkable achievement.
Did I mention that he scored his 28,000th first class run today?
Me and stats.
We're like that,like that I tell you.
Just got back from Worcester, great entertainment going for points between the showers, great knock from Banger and classic innings from JL,outscoring Banger in their partnership.
Guess plan is to get to 400 asap, then we have decision to declare straight away or smash 450-500 with aim of only batting once.
Think we have to declare at 400 though as so little time left, bat on only hampers our remote chances of getting 20 wickets in what 175 overs max
Well sending trigger in at number 4 suggested that Langer is up for it however it can be arranged. It really is make or break so we have little to lose from going for the win.
I don't think Worcs will be up for much contrivance, FE.
Not unless the pitch is really flat. I would think they'll be glad to escape with a draw against us, if they can, and then try and beat the teams around them, later in the piece.
I also see that Marcus is only 21 away from 1000 First class (and also County Championship) runs scored this season, with only just over half the season gone.
Draws won't help Worcs where they are; 20-odd points adrift having played a game more.
But I suspect you are right that contrivance is unlikley.
Oh well, it'll just have to be 20 wickets in the conventional way then. I'd happily see us forfeit the last batting point in pursuit of victory.
350-up and bowl them out for 150 anyone?
Langer is a genius: he knew rain would come precisely ten minutes after 400 was reached and quite rightly reckoned there was no point in spending those ten minutes in the pavilion.
Surely the only scenario that makes sense now is the double declaration, when the number of overs we've had is more or less the same as the theoretical number left?
Having been told by BR to pronounce it "keys", the commentator changed from "kies" to "kays". Perhaps we should tell him it is really "kiss sweeter" and he might get it right.
He also congratulated Langer on surpassing Bradman's Test record - maybe that's some record to do with declaring an innings closed after the match has finished.
Well now Cricinfo says they're having tea, so perhaps when they've had supper and a nice cooked breakfast we might get some play again.
I have to go underground (don't ask) for the next four or five days to sort out a little problem in Flanders and was hoping the destiny of this match would be clear by the time I go out of contact tomorrow morning.
I think it was yesterday, FE, that you posted a list of four alternative pronunciations. Clearly you failed to include the half dozen other variants that our man at New Road keeps inventing.
The birds are well fed,the up train from Minehead dropped off some extra special corn especially for the game.
Only 15 left to go now,the remaining ones will be dispatched at regular intervals until mid afternoon tommorow.
I hope they reach the smoke safely.
We'd have to be WAY more generous than that for Solanki to even give us the time of day, wsm - maybe 280 off 65.
Even then, I'd say chances are next to zero. Best bet appears to be to get out with 12 pts by bowling them out once, then hope to enforce follow-on and have time to do it again.
We've done very well in this game to get as far as we have with so much rain.
I'm with SP (surprisingly enough! ).
We've taken 6 top order wickets in 45 overs, so we have to back ourselves to win. If we can take no more than 10 overs or so to get the four that will enforce the follow-on we'll 80 overs to run through them again. Game on!
i hope you are right but fear weather will hold us to a draw.
be interested to know which, if either captain were keen on a manufactured chase.
i'll settle for trying our luck tomorrow, as stated 4 wickets by say 12.30 tomorrow, (clearly below the follow on target) then we need to put the pressure on early second time.
realy is a shame the weather looks like stopping a certain 22 points, luck is shining on durham currently so to speak...
We are totally in the driving seat...but rain tomorrow will leave us with 12 pts which from what will be only a little more than 2 days worth of overs is magnificent. WE just need the Yorkshire batting to show bit of grit.
I can't see any connivance occurring, whatever the weather. We have to bowl them out before lunch and before they reach the follow-on target and then try to do it all over again. Why would Langer risk the guaranteed 12 points? I assume he batted on beyond 400 to improve the chances of being able to enforce that follow-on.
I shan't be around to follow progress, but I've put BJ in charge (which should do it).
So they are 114 from safety and the end of the game effectively. Not sure what he was planning. The only reason to go past 400 was for the extra point and he may have left them out there because the weathr was closing in and getting the Worcs guys in before the rain wouldn't have been of much use.
Not looking hopeful though the men with the pill have done their job this evening.
Just have to get the prayer mat out and hope for more than maximum extra points.
The only reason to go past 400 was for the extra point
With hindsight, I'd have to disagree. Surely part of the point, although I didn't see it at the time is that if we'd pulled out at 400 and they'd had the overs they should have had since, they'd quite possibly have already passed the 250 that would have been needed to effectively kill the game off. Those few extra runs (but more importantly the time it took to get them) have left the game very much alive at the close of day 3.
When the commentators couldn’t understand why we didn’t declare at 400 that was my thought that he was making the follow-on target that bit more, then the rain before lunch forced his hand.
It is hard to know when to declare but I think Justin made the correct decision as it turn out.
If it hadn't rained before lunch I would have guessed Langer going to at least 450(CK was scoring quickly and no doubt Stiff would have tried a Yorkshire) The only possible way to win is to enforce the follow on
IF we get a full days play in tomorrow we can put theder pressure.
We Have to bowl them out by 12.30 then should have about 70 overs to do it a second time.
If they are 4 or 5 down by tea second time around we still have a chance.
Almost as importantly we need Yorks to show some fight at Scarborough
Come on peeps. Believe. We got their top 6 out this evening in much less than a session. All we want is another 14 wickets, yes, just 14, that's all, in what might well be another rain interrupted day tomorrow. Believe. Five wickets per session. That's all, and an early finish for good measure. Believe. BELIEVE. I can feel it in my water. We're nearly there.
I don't understand why there is not more optimism (apart than from the usual suspects) about picking up 4 wickets quickly in the morning certainly for less than a 100 runs and pushing on to win.
I have more confidence this season about mopping up the tail reasonably quickly mainly due to our secret weapon Mr. Stiff and that will certainly set up an interesting finish.
This is one when, if you weren't at the ground you can't really comment on the timing of the declaration, it was certainly not just a question of runs and overs. I think JL got it just about right and our bowlers responded magnificently in the last session.
We took the top six this evening, if we have them again by Tea tomorrow then it is going to be an interesting final session.
"With hindsight, I'd have to disagree. Surely part of the point, although I didn't see it at the time is that if we'd pulled out at 400 and they'd had the overs they should have had since, they'd quite possibly have already passed the 250 that would have been needed to effectively kill the game off. Those few extra runs (but more importantly the time it took to get them) have left the game very much alive at the close of day 3."
I think that line of thinking - had Langer been thinking it - would imply a slight lack of faith in the bowling, which subsequent events on the day did not bear out (apart from all the no-balls.)
I think we have about a 30% chance of forcing a win, if the day is wholly dry. But I'm not sure that's the forecast?
On paper, at least, the Worcs batting line-up is not bad (top 6) and so one would think they might find more fibre second time around?
I don't think it's a significant "lack of faith" to be concerned that you might concede 250 on a pitch on which you've just made 400 for 5.
The best chance of forcing a win was always going to be by batting only once.
As there obviously wasn't going to be any kind of forfeiture arrangment, I think the declaration was timed correctly.
Nope in this case it's an attack of realism I'm afraid. It's raining here now and the Worcestershire wicket is sodden from what I can deduce.
With a full day of uninterrupted play this could have been a goer (as long as we got them out for less than another 114) but I'll be surprised if we get on the go on time even given the precipitation on Bicknoller Acres at this present moment.
Well, if that's the case, let's just hope we get to at least end their first innings and get maximum points.
Meterologists say there is something in that old St Swithin's day thing - not what happens on the day but what happens for a week or so either side. The pattern then often becomes ensconsed for most of July and August, which is likely to mean that the raging summer we were promised has been cancelled...
ergo.... if we're lucky other teams will also lose the chance to beat up on poor old Worcs.
Justin may think that Stiff is too much of a gamble with only 40 or so runs to play with. I'd have thought we'd be more likely to see Willow and Thomas.
12 pts in the bag at least - I guess that's all we can realistically expect. Yorks 77-2, 87 behind - although we'd have wanted to beat Worcs, we might not do too badly out of this round.
So 17 overs is a few more than we would have liked to take this morning. Take 19 off leaves 77 to bowl them out again in my book.
PS: despite the Stiff suggestion (made just after Andrew "comfortably" pulled Caddick for 4), I am delighted that Caddy is starting to pick up wickets on his comeback.
Well it's better than I expected up to now. Big job still. Nice to see the Cadman in the wickets. Please stay off weather and this could become mighty interesting.
6 wkts in the first sesssion in which they batted. 5 in the second. If we get 4 in the afternoon session, that could set-up a fascinating final session.
Of course, if they finish just two or three down, we will have to ask KT and Justin Langer whether it's also 'NOT possible,' to take 10 wickets on a last day pitch at Worcester (including the four we took this morning.)
With Solanki and Smith stopping the rot and the partnership over 100 you get the feeling that this is going the way of Hampshire. Bit too loose from Stiffy (who seems to be carrying an injury....ooooeeeer) and Trigger (who nearly gave himself one with a stop in the field).
Little sign of first innings 3 wicket Caddick or second innings morning wickets Suppiah though - may still be a sting in the tail perhaps.
I'm not there AG just listening on the radionogram. Justin has faith in him a little more and I suppose like anyone else he needs time at the crease to really hone the art.
The problem with this innings, as with Hampshire is that in 7 runs time, every run counts double. It's a run ahead for them and a run we have to have time to get. We need a flurry of wickets and if they survive beyond 4 some good dry weather if there is to be any chance.
Good to see the back of Solanki though. Must log off to buy internet stuff more often.
Worcester's batsmen have batted as they are capable of doing and attempted to score rather than defend.MEanwhile Yorks have done likewise so far so if both games end in draws then we gain 1 point on Notts, which given the weather is a very good effort
4 wickets now for the Cadmeister. That could be the most encouraging facet of this game .. because there's no doubt that he, more than anyone, knows how to take wickets on Mr Frost's tracks and so if he is coming back to something like form....
Could be very, very timely ahead of the Notts game?
Great effort lads. Just wasn't to be in the end.
I know many will have a pop at Justin's declaration, but the odd 28 runs and the odd half hour was not the difference between winning and drawing.
I don't know personally what the Worcester pitch is like for batting on, to have got it like this for batting after all the trouble with flooding must have taken a lot of hard work by the groundsman.
I think the major differences between ourselves and Durham is that our batting is much better, as is their bowling. The advantage to them is that these bowlers are needed to bowl sides out twice. It doesn't matter how many runs we score, if we can't assist Willo with the new ball.
wsm fan offers his condolences on another thread to Yorkshire's Gale, dismissed for 99 today.
Given that they saved the draw comfortably, I'm now prepared to admit that I felt a little sorry for Solanki today.
It must be tough leading Worcs at the moment, and he's always struck me as one of the game's "good guys", so I wouldn't have begrudged him his ton today.
As to "huge favourites", I wouldn't put it that strongly. We're within (just ) one maximum points win of them, and I didn't expect that a month ago.
If Sussex can do us a favour, and we beat Notts it's going to get very interesting!
Unfortunately Durham V Sussex next week is at Riverside, with the home attack looking the more potent of the two on what, I`m sure, will yet again be a results wicket favouring the quickies.
Perhaps we should be cheering Sussex on in the FPT final at Lord`s tomorrow to give their morale a boost.
Ah but there's always the chance that a result pitch, combined with a decent journeyman bowler having a good day can backfire.
Law of averages says it has to happen to Durham at some stage.
What price one or more of Corey Collymore, Jason Lewry, Yasir Arafat or even Mike Yardy having a purple patch?
Not forgetting their international strike bolwer, Luke Wright!
Botham's dead right. We have one of Somerset's best ever batting lineups but it will only get us so far, at Taunton or anywhere else, without the bowling to back it up.
Well there's a statement of the flaming obvious KT.
And a side with great bowling side get nowhere if the batsmen don't score enough runs.
And a side with equal abilities in each area need them to contribute equally for them to get adequate results
But this wasn't a case of lack of ability, this was because of lack of time. No first day. On and off second day. Lost middle of third day. We were stopped by Smith, Solanki and rain. Do you doubt we would have taken the 20 required given the extra 100+ overs?
The next game will decide whether this side can do the job of winning in a close game over FOUR days......hopefully.
I'm not sure myself but I'll at least not write them off on the basis of a badly weather affected result where they took 14 of the 20 wickets required. I suppose I'm looking at what they achieved....my standards may not be as high but they got closer than I would have expected.

Maybe we could have bowled a bit more tightly today (see AH's comments on the other site), but to have even got into the position we did was a major achievement.
