Down to the Rosebowl for a pivotal Championship game - our 'game in hand'. Over 20 points is a must as long as the weather gives us the opportunity. Questions about Ben Phillips, Peter Trego and Steffan Jones leave the make-up of the side uncertain but whoever plays needs to give us a top perfromance.

Rain has delayed the start of this game. A game we need to take a whole bunch of points in and gain revenge for our one day defeat on Sunday. There is no team information on the official site or Cricinfo at the present moment but we have most of it I would imagine.
Trescothick, Edwards(?), Langer, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Blackwell, Kieswetter, ?,?,Caddick, Willoughby
The question marks stand by Niel Edwards although I would expect him to play. The real question is which of our second line of seam attack will play? We have two places and FOUR bowlers fighting for a place. Peter Trego is not playing one day games, Ben Phillips seems to be carrying some sort of 'niggle', Steffan Jones is pushing through agressive batting and pacy bowling but can be expensive and Alfonso Thomas is doing very little wrong in any format. It is doubtful that we will see second spinning options so I would expect the choice to be between these four men.
But you never know....the mind of Justin is a very complex little place!
We do get started in the afternoon and we don't have our captain.
Marcus Trescothick, no Edwards, Zander de Bruyn (opening?), James Hildreth, Ian Blackwell, Peter Trego, Arul Suppiah, Craig Kieswetter, Alfonso Thomas, Wes Durston, Andrew Caddick, Charl Willoughby
Strange n'est pas? We aren't batting because Hampshire won the toss and decided to bat. No idea what the order will be at the moment but we have them at 112 for 4 with 2 wickets each for Willow and Trigger.
There was little more play on the first day but some excellent bowling from our whole attack with no-one going for more than 3 an over and wickets to the two above. Brilliant figures from Thomas - 7 overs for 9 and the pick of the bowlers was Peter Trego with 2 for 18 off his 7. Ian Blackwell weighed in with 17 off his 11 at 1.5 per over - that's what he can do Mr Langer!
Day 2
We ended the day with Hampshire on 113/4 and Lumb dangerously on 49 (but Carberry has gone at least - he loves us!!). The rain delayed the start and shortened the day but we seem to be away on time on day 2. Caddick and Willoughby are starting the session but it will probably be another 'stop/start' day as the rain clouds are whirling around the bottom half of the country. Rain affected Day 2 but we did get the game moving for at least part of the day.
Ian Blackwell took 'first blood' on Day 2 with the wicket of Dawson at 146. Then Caddick got the big scalp of Lumb but it took another 80 runs in partnership Ervine and the man passed his century before he was caught behind for 107. Mascarenhas put on 41 but each of our men came up with one as the home side lost all their remaining wickets for another 90 thanks to Thomas, Caddick, Blackwell and Willoughby. All out for 316 but it took most of the day and although Marcus and (surprisingly) Arul Suppiah faced a number of overs at the end of the day. It was really a start and then start again. They didn't lose a wicket and amassed 41 by the end of play. Big batting day tomorrow!!
Day 3
Batting the day out and some big scores were what we wanted, so losing Suppiah with only 14 added and then unusually losing de Bruyn cheaply (0!) on the same score was NOT what was required. Hampshire must have been hoping that Tomlinson (who took both - remember him?) was going to have another one of those days against us. However, Hildreth is coming out of his slump to some extent and he settled down to put some runs on with Mr T together they took the score to 142 before Banger went to Dawson.
Wes came in ahead of Ian and got involved in a mix up with Hildreth who was run out as he reached his 50 and his side reched 150 for 4! Bonus points looked a long way off and any kind of result in this even further. Another game for Blackwell to come in and take by the scruff. We've hoped for it all season. He'd bowled well in this game and the Surrey match as well but could he provide the batting strength we needed to put us back in this game and abo ve Notts in the table?
Well first of all he put 47 on with Durston before Wes went LBW to Tahir just before 200. He then put on another 54 with Kieswetter before he went to Tahir caught by Adams. Then he and Trego - the well rested duo - moved into another gear and moved the score to 339 before Trigger went to - you've guessed it - Tahir LBW for an excellent 58 off 51 balls! We ended the day on 385 for 7 with Ian unbeaten on 104 (100 off 168 balls 9 fours and 1 six) keeping up the move to 400 with Alfonso Thomas
Day 4
400 first, then smack it about Ian and then declare, get them in and try and bowl them out. 12 points for certain but more if possible.
Somerset went past 400 quickly before Mr Blackwell went for an excellent and important 129 at 423. However, Thomas was seeing the ball well and he took the score on to 436 with Caddick (who managed 1 in the partnership) before he went for really good 43. Charl came in and went to Dimitri first ball and we were done for 436. Now could we get among them well before they passed our total?
West Country hopes must have soared when Trego bowled Adams with only 26 up - but that was it well into the afternoon as Carberry and Lumb pitched anchor and took the score past 100 at less than three an over.
That's the way it stayed up until the declaration by the home side for 196 and the end of the game. But...12 points and we are Championship leaders going around the third bend with the finish in sight. 5 ahead of Notts - Trent Bridge is going to be a HUGE game!!

I suspect we will find the Rose Bowl wicket for the cc match against Hampshire this week somewhat out of its ordinary `low and slow` nature.
Pakistan leg-spinner Imran Tahir looked decidedly ineffectual on Taunton`s resuse of the `dead` Surrey championship wicket for yesterday`s Pro40 match, with figures of 0-47 at an economy rate of above 7 an over.
Yet he has taken 22 championship wickets in just three matches for Hampshire, and like all legspinners will obviously be looking for more bounce at the Rose Bowl tomorrow.
If the weather was `normal` August variety, I would be tempted to play Michael Munday, but with all this rain around feel this will not happen.
In other selections, Hampshire will probably bring back Michael Brown, Sean Ervine, James Tomlinson (not another 10 wickets please!) and Greg Lamb, compared with yesterday`s side. I notice, though, that John Crawley didn`t play yesterday or in the last championship match and wonder whether he is injured.

Yesterday was ludicrous. It as dark by 7, freezing cold with a really chilly breeze. Most peoplle were in fleeces and my mate even suggested popping home (round the corner) to get some gloves at about 4:30!!
If it's anything like that this week then a spinner is a waste of time except as a run saver I'm afraid because they'll get nothing off the pitch.

I'm not sure Ben is well. He seems to be bowling well within himself and fielding in non pressure positions. Jonah was really producing some pace yesterday but he can be costly, though there's no quesation that he gives everything every time he plays.
And he can bat. It isn't luck that gets him scores, he'll straight drive the best if they give him the ball to do it to.
We need that aggression if we aren't going to use Peter as an allrounder.

Hear, hear, LoL! In view of the clean bill of health that AH gave everyone before the Surrey game, Jonah's non-selection was baffling in the extreme (to me at least.)
Conversely, I feel that Jonah has been a little too expensive in recent one-day games, though, and wonder whether we ought not to rest him for the remaining CC fixtures (a la Caddy)?

Giles White, who played briefly for Somerset in the early 1990s and is yet another product of Millfield School, will be in charge of Hampshire for their cc match against us. He takes over from Paul Terry, who announced his resignation as director of cricket last week.

Everyone seems to agree that, like last week, Friday will definitely be fine.
Realistically, I think our best chance of a 'good,' outcome is another maximum points draw.
That would put us nine points ahead of Notts from equal games played, with the game at Trent Bridge up next.. In other words, win at Trent Bridge and Notts hopes would be all but ended..
Of course, Durham remain a threat. They're at Sussex this week, where they have an execrable record.

However, the actual met office rainfall radar for the UK suggests that there shouldn't be too much wet stuff around Southampton, right at the minute.
I'm at work about 6 miles away from the Rose Bowl and although it was drizzling, it's now brightened up somewhat. Would expect them to be able to at least make a start soon.

I'm really confused.
Is the up-shot that Wes AND Arul have replaced Langer and Phillips?
I wonder if that's a case of them picking both of Wes and Arul to try to replace JL's batting?
I hope Arul has not been picked primarily as a second spinner, because that would be a really grave reflection on things a propos Michael Munday, plus I do not believe that Arul is penetrative enough with the ball to take many wickets on anything other than a bunsen burner. And hopefully, given that they won the toss, it isn't that.

On second thoughts, a more sensible interpretation would be Suppiah for Langer and Durston for Phillips. But I'm still a little surprised that Edwards didn't come in for the Chief.

I also believe it's fairly common practice for players to eschew captaincy responsibilities during their benefit year, so MT's non-leadership may be indicative of nothing more than temporary unavailability.

why is langer not playing? this is our biggest cc game of the season
Their leading run-scorer (and only centurion bar Pietersen and Pothas) is missing for them, so that perhaps cancels out Langer's absence to some extent.
With only Pothas of this XI averaging higher than 33, it could be a good time to play them.

Pleased, surprised and relieved that - so far - Mr Caddick has not seen fit to take on a disproportionate amount of the bowling.

I think so, judging by the downpour that happened where I am. However, it only lasted 10 minutes and has now stopped. Considerably brighter now as well. We might get a bit more tonight but I would imagine that the outfield is pretty wet.

And what glorious news! The opener we seem to be without at the Rosebowl made a hundred at the County Ground against Young MCC today - whooppee! I bet he's over the moon with his score.
Last season our first three batsmen, Trescothick, Edwards and Langer, gave us a consistently good start to our innings. Now it seems we need only one of them, which I find somewhat surprising.

I wonder if the powers-that-be consider Neil to be culpable to some degree in the 'mis-hap,' which has befallen him and if the decision to omit him is somehow reflective of this?
One other thought that occurred to me;
We might be expecting a very low scoring game in this one.
If so, the powers that be might have decided that a right/left hand opening combination might have advantages in producing a few stray deliveries early in the piece as bowlers have to adjust their lines?
I guess the other thing at foot may simply be that the powers-that-be appear particularly keen to promote Arul's chances in the team at the moment. Some of us have fears as to what the exact motivation behind that may be. Though it could be a very simple motivation that they increasingly believe that Arul is good enough.
One thing we can be sure of is that neither he nor Wes will keep a fit JL out of the next CC game, so this is a very big match for both men as a maximum of one of them will survive to the next game, assuming JL is fit.
One final thought - perhaps JL's back injury may be opportune in terms of the one-day side? Someone else (not Caddy either) will get a chance to lead and that could be welcome.

Neil`s `mis-hap`, to use your euphemism AG, may well have had an influence on team selection for Southampton - but not in the way you are suggesting.
The matter was concluded at Taunton Deane yesterday, and in such instances, the magistrates can ask for witnesses to be present - although, in reality, they rarely call them at this late stage.
Playing for the Seconds at Taunton yesterday would have allowed NE to be on hand; travelling to Southampton the day before would not.

Hildreth for 2010 and thereafter is my hunch.

You mis-understood me, Grockle. I simply meant that, if JL is unfit to play in the one-day games coming up, somebody else will have to lead - and that won't be Caddy unless we're suddenly going to pick him because he's the captain?

The Times this morning noted that there was "tennis ball" bounce yesterday. Given that Blackie and Arul appear to be bowling in tandem at the moment, could we rue the decision not to include our Leggie?

I've a feeling that this game may well be an epic struggle on a pitch on which it seems to be very possible to stay in but a good deal more difficult to score.

btw.. Blub.. the term tennis ball bounce is usually employed to describe a slow, looping type of bounce as opposed to, say, the kind of steepling bounce that one would expect someone like Andrew Caddick to extract from a cricket pitch with a hard ball.
That type of bounce is not necessarily massively helpful to a spinner, either, if the slowness means that batsmen can adjust to the bounce.
Speaking of hard balls, I believe a new ball must be due soon. We really must push through the rest of this line-up. I think our chances of a win depend, substantially, on only batting once.

He has played in all 12 matches, bowled 292 overs before the current game and taken 17 wickets at an average of 40.
Only Willow has bowled more overs at 350, and Ben Phillips in third place is 85 overs behind Blackie. Even in the last match, our man bowled 24 of the 123 overs in the Surrey innings, with only Andy C ahead of him.
It strikes me that this adds up to pretty much `a good bowl` in most people`s terms.

With 2 days gone we are in a sort of Surrey situation except that Hants don't have Ramprakash.and the weather sounds no better. Realistically all we hope for is a 12 point draw with an outside chance of a win. If we get a full day today then at 4 an over we would end up at 420. It seems to be a 400 and declare job, but then the Notts and Durham games are really win but don't lose games.

Reading yesterday`s reports, I see that Marcus and Arul had to go on and off for rain and bad light three times in just 10 overs.

I don't agree with the implied suggestion that Ian has somehow bowled economically because JL isn't out there leading the side. Ian habitually bowls with very good economy. I saw him bowl in a very similar vein at Horsham.

I'm not at all convinced that, in terms of first-class cricket, Ian has been out of form with the ball, Jim. Certainly, he was not even remotely out of form at Horsham and Grockle has suggested that Ian bowled very well against Surrey too.
He might be needed more with the bat very soon in this one, if the penant is to be won.
This was the best form he's shown in a long time AG,it is good to see him bowling so well again.

In fairness bo, I think that with this team, any number of players could bat at 5,6,7 or 8. Personally I find it quite reassuring that bobo comes in at 8 as he seems a little more consistent than the others at the moment - and it must really annoy the opposition to see him there!

I always struggle with the notion of "deserving" to bat higher.
It doesn't make sense to me.
In this case, someone averaging over 50, and scoring at a run a ball would seem ideal to come in late in the order. Unless those ahead of him are struggling for form*, and I am not sure that is the case.

I just think that pete is simply a better player than a couple of the guys in the top 6 at the moment and has proven that over the past 2 seasons.
I appreciate that a lot of his runs have been at 7/8 but surely its time to put faith in both of his abilities.
Averages dont lie,and people during and at the end of their carrer will always look at that and define weather that player was a nearly man or a good county pro.

Surely the tactic now is not just to reach 400 tomorrow, but race past it for, say, 14 overs. By that time we should be around 140 ahead, with 80 overs still left to bowl in the day.
If we can then rush them out in 60-65 overs, the match could be there for the taking.

I think it will take a combination of a brisk start tomorrow morning, some cooperative weather and a batting collapse from Hampshire to contrive the win. At least the worst case scenario here is a draw with maximum bonus points. Still puts Durham in the strongest position, but given the weather's behaviour not a bad return.

A splendid day thanks to Blackie and Pete. The best thing was Blackie's strike rate which indicated the innings of a batsman in difficult circumstances. I;ve just read what I wrote and Ia m not meaning to criticise Pete as a non batsman because of his strike rate, merely pointing to a different Blackie. I see Hurry is quoted as looking for a lead of 150 so he's asking for another 90 and then bowl like demons. Victory is unlikely but a good 12 points coming
Look, Ian and Pete did what any one that posseses a brain expected them to do. I, personally, was absolutely delighted with what they did. They took four wickets. They were very parismonious and they made more than 150 runs.

We're in a decent position, Jim. And Durham have just been undermined by Harmy's ODI return. Suspect they'll win their remaining home games (but find them low scoring) but Durham do struggle, at times, away from home.

A lead of 69 hopefully will be increased to 125/150 and then let our bowlers put maximum pressure on the hampshire top order.
As we have seen over the years its not a great position to be in as a batting side when the only result you can get is a draw and that is surely the position hampshire are in.
I have heard that the wicket is taking turn and also the "odd" ball is going up or down......... enter Mr Caddidck.

Times describes it as a slow turner which is what I had guessed was the case from actual match events.
Of course, a draw has to be favoured - especially as there may be showers around, too.
But Mr Trego made a very good point that it can be tough batting when you have no chance of winning which is the situation that should face Hants at some time today.

Certainly was. 'An idea for everything,' was the phrase that caught my eye in this morning's paper.
Being that Hants are desperate for points, and have no chance of winning this game, surely their only option is to shut up shop completely and just aim to survive? If we win this game, we deserve the CC, but I'm not sure we can take 10 wickets today.
The main thing against our prospects is that wickets have not fallen quickly, nor in bunches, in this contest so far.
But in all honesty their opening attack in this match, Tomlinson and Mascarhenas, are no better than our change bowlers in this match, Thomas and Trego.

My apologies, Professor. I think my normal standards are slipping as I'm de-mob happy with Bank Holiday coming up, SCCC on the box tomorrow. A trip to Taunton for Thursday night's game, a week in Avignon and, hopefully a trip to Scarborough, all lying in my immediate future.
My only regret is that SCCC cannot play Notts in Avignon where, I'm sure, the weather will be a good deal more reliable.

With a potentially low-scoring game at Notts coming up, Alfonso's display of form may be especially timely.
I'm not sure we should bother with Charl. Potential down-side (hand injury being sustained) may outweigh any potential up-side.

Interesting that Arul seems to have already fallen behind Wes in the bowling pecking order, based on Wes being brought on first in this innings.
I wouldn't read too much into things like that AG,it may have been for any number of reasons.
The most obvious being that his off breaks offer greater contrast with Ian's slow left arm.

The contrast thing depends on how you look at it, FE. When I've seen Wes, he's generally flighted the ball, as does Ian. Arul tends to bowl darts, though. Therefore, unless the ball is turning a lot, then Wes might be more 'samey,' than Arul?
Regardless, it now seems that they're both being given a chance of a long bowl now - presumably as an audition for which of them will retain his place when JL returns?

I think avoiding defeat saves you from getting relegated, but probably won't be enough to win you the championship (unless weather plays in big part in stopping others getting points while you are lucky and keep getting 12 per match).
Yeah; obviously Durham's five wins to our three leaves them in the box seat at the moment. But I think I'm right in saying that there have been quite a few cases in recent years of the Championship being won by a team other than the one with most wins?
Anyway, let's see what Durham's and Notts' games next week bring and then get ready to stuff them both.
