Gloucester will play their part in rugby history when they become the first club to play Georgia's Black Lion in a full scale European Cup Competition. The opening Challenge Cup game will be in Tbilisi on Saturday December 9th with a 16.00 kick off.

Black Lion were formed just two years ago  to play in the Rugby Europe Super Cup - the annual competition for clubs outside the three big leagues.

They are owned by the Georgian Rugby Federation and are in the Challenge Cup for the first time by invitation.

They will be made up of a number of familiar names who mainly ply their trade in France - including  prop Mikheil Nariashvili who won the Challenge Cup with Montpellier in 2016 .

The Challenge Cup will feature 18 clubs in three pools of six. There will be four pool stage rounds and four knockout stage rounds. The four highest-ranked clubs in each pool qualify for the knockout stage.

Round Two will see the Cherry and Whites host Clermont Auvergne on Friday Decmeber 15th - 20.00 kick off.

Round 3 - Edinburgh v Gloucester Saturday January 13th - 17.30

Round 4 - Gloucester v Castres Olympique Friday January 9th  - 20.00
