Gloucester proved their strength in depth is a lot better than Cardiff's as they cruised to a 40-3 LV= Cup win over the Welsh side at Kingsholm at the end of a week in which they have improved the squad further with the signing of Billy Twelvetrees from Liecester.

Both sides showed a massive number of changes from their Heineken Cup games a week before, but Glaws were never in any danger as they simply took Cardiff apart.

Nobody did better than Ryan Mills to demonstrate the depth of talent at Kingsholm as the 19-year-old grabbed the chance to shine at fly-half with 15 points via six successful kicks, while old hand James Simpson-Daniel demonstrated the sort of class Mills and his young mates aspire to with two typical tires in the second half.

 Peter Buxton and Tim Molenaar scored first-half tries as Glaws took a 21-3 half-time lead, while JSD’s pair in the final quarter earned the vital bonus point before Andy Hazell’s late try as holders Glaws look ahead to next weekend’s LV= visit to London Irish.

Mills and Simpson- Daniel got the majority of the points, but the pack built the foundations with a solid display that had Cardiff breathless for most of the game.

Coach Bryan Redpath admitted there were mistakes, but told the club website: “On the whole, I can’t question the result and there was great support for the team again.

“We have 14 players away training somewhere else, so it was always going to be difficult, but it was important we got the result. Some part were really messy and we wasted a lot of energy.

“Being holders doesn’t put extra pressure on us, but it puts pride into it. Next weekend is a big one for us and we should be aiming for the semi-final. If we can get the trophy back here it would be wonderful.”

It’s that time of the season when international calls really do dig into a squad, and every team Glaws play will be affected in one way or another.

How team cope with the absence of so many regulars is what will decide the outcome of many games, and the signs in this one were that Glaws can cope as well as most.
