JSD - only try

Coach Bryan Redpath said it was a make-or-break game, and Gloucester’s players responded well as they ground out a 13-6 Amlin win at La Rochelle, a result that leaves them just a point behind their French rivals and providing the perfect set-up for next weekend’s return match at Kingsholm.

Winning ugly is often just as important as entertaining, and that was the case for Glaws on the Atlantic coast as they scored the only try of the game and totally stifled the home attack.
They find themselves in a French bread sandwich between La Rochelle and Agen, knowing that their two home games against those sides will decide the group.
That disappointing loss at Agen at the start of their Pool 5 campaign suddenly doesn’t look quite as bad as it did at the time.
Redpath had said that the trip to la Rochelle was the key game for his team. “If we lose, potentially that’s it for us,” he had added.
The message got home and with James Simpson-Daniel scoring his first-half try, converted by Nicky Robinson and Freddie Burns slotting two second-half penalties after replacing the Welshman, Glaws always looked relatively comfortable.
Glaws matched La Rochelle physically, and this time – unlike at Agen – the discipline was spot on.
Apart from JSD’s try, the only pretty aspect of the game was the scoreline, but it’s a professional game and in a foreign country getting the result comes before every other consideration.
The cherry and white away form this season has been poor - going to a place like La Rochelle and winning shows they can do it if they follow the game plan and get the discipline right.
We'll have a bit more where that came from, please.
Glaws can worry a little more about how good they look when they welcome La Rochelle to Kingsholm next weekend, but Redpath will no doubt be making sure they don’t all into the trap of thiking the job is done.
