ExTeddChief looks back at a great performance from the Chiefs  

Chiefs show mercy to vanquish Irish

 What can I say, this was looking to be the best start to a Chiefs season in the Premiership, and that was despite the loss in Geordieland! Even that was a pretty good match!

In the meantime, I hadn’t been able to get to the Quins game because I was at a surf trip up in Woolacoombe but the fact is, we were still top four despite the Newcastle loss. As an ESPN analyst once said…”pinch us, we think we’re dreaming”.

So, finally, back to Sandy Park! Saturday morning brought swimming, bagels at Boston Tea Party then later lunch at grandparents place and then…head on out. My grandfather and I have found a regular sport in the western corner of SW Comms! Enough time to get a program and then half an Otter each before kickoff and then…showtime!

The only problem with the first half was that a lot of the action was at the other end but that was fine by us. The Chiefs hit the ground running and a quick first try was inevitable…or was it? Eventually we settled for a Steeno pen, not that the scoreboard was able to acknowledge it!

The men in green responded quickly though, no matter what form the Chiefs are on, there are no mugs in this league! The Chiefs defence was very nearly mugged though and did concede a penalty, Shane Geraghty knows what he’s doing!

After that though, well, again we weren’t able to see much of the action but we were looking amazing. Eventually we got our first try with Rimmer running through, then Slade grabbed our second. Seeing Sladey at centre is taking a bit of getting used to but you can’t argue about his play!

Steeno slotted a couple of pens then Welch got try number three, Steeno converted and this was looking magical!

Half time and we were just looking to get ourselves a fourth try to secure the WBP. The queue for a pasty proved to be very long and I wound up missing the first minute or two of the second half.

Credit to Irish they were trying to mount a comeback but were going nowhere fast. They did enough to slow down that search for the fourth try but once we surged forward again, there was that air of inevitability!

Push…push…scrabble…held up…clear…come back…push…zing it out wide…”that one’s ours”. WBP wrapped up. And still we showed no mercy, the men in green unable to handle a surging Jack as he fired it to Armand who could not be touched!

Steeno converted both and that seemed to be just about that, if anything you were starting to pity the men in green while delighting in the fact that we were capable of putting a team to the sword in this fashion. They did eventually get a try off a messed up lineout of ours, Blair Cowan claiming the credit, Geraghty converting.

That should have been it but then a messed up Chiefs lineout saw the men in green fastbreak and before we knew it, they’d gotten another try.
Now the scoreline was starting to flatter the visitors, the defence should certainly have tightened up at this point but no, they get a third try, Cowan’s second, Geraghty converting again. Still, that’s pretty much job done!

I can’t see Rob liking us taking our foot off the gas to the extent that we did but the fact is, at time of writing we are third in the Premiership and have scored over 200 points already and have the best part of a +90 match points difference!

Now let’s see what happens in Europe! So far, this season is proving quite something!
