There’s no such thing when facing the Knights of Doncaster.

The past 3 seasons have seen some very close games against a strong club, who hold the record for achieving promotion 8 times in the first 15 seasons of the league structure, finally arriving in Nat 1 at the start of the 2005/06 season. Since then they have, like the Chiefs, been in continual contention for a top 5 spot in the league.

Doncaster are one of those never give up sides, they always have a strong side that can come back at you with running rugby when you are least expecting it, as they’ve done on several occasions against the Chiefs. Last season they did what Exeter failed to do, beat Leeds Carnegie, going 27 points ahead, punishing them with the boot of Jamie Lennard, their No.10, before letting them back into the game to score 12 points in the last 10 minutes. Luckily the killer boot of Jamie Lennard is now installed at London Irish.

Doncaster were far from pleased with this season’s opener against Bedford, losing to them at Castle Park 12-26. Lyn Howells, DoR, was angry about both their high error and turnover rate which had stifled their flowing style of play. With that defeat under their belt, they will be keen to return to Devon and put together a display similar or better than their last visit when they kept the Chiefs to a 9-9 draw on the last day of the 08/09 season.

In contrast, Exeter open at Sandy Park with a 25-50 win against last years bogey team, Moseley, under their belt and having made an excellent show against Premiership Sale Sharks home and away in pre-season. One thing they will be looking to tidy up this week is taking the game to the full 80 minutes, as Doncaster are known to do well at coming back in the final period, whereas, Exeter did the opposite last week and took their foot off the gas allowing Moseley back into the game.

This game promises to be a typical Knights v Chiefs battle, with Donny wanting to redeem themselves from last week’s effort, and the Chiefs wanting to ensure that they win in their home camp.

With a fine warm day forecast, there should be little wind about to give anyone an advantage.

Match prediction: a close fought game with Exeter coming out on top 25-18.
