Chiefs fans give a few thoughts on Sunday's EDF trophy final and what it means to them. After a dissapointing start to the season the Chiefs are feeling confident of a victory, having only lost once (to ND1 Champions, Leeds Tykes), since December. What the final means to me.....

Just a few thoughts from Chiefs Fans prior to Sunday's Final.

As a relative newcomer to watching the Chiefs, I've had a season ticket for 5 years now, I can't remember the first final and was unable to go when the Chiefs played Orell.  So this is the first time and I'm sure, not the last that I will see the Chiefs play at Twickenham.  I've been  lucky enough to see England play Scotland and France this year and the atmosphere in the stadium is electric.  Although this is not an International day there will still be the buzz of excitement that every rugby crowd generates.  Even more so with our final as we're playing the Pirates.  It would have been great to be playing Plymouth but the Devon Cornwall rivalry does add something special to the occassion.  Games are always intensely competitive between our two sides and I can already feel the nervous excitement building in me (and I'm writing this with a week to go!). 

 
The Chiefs have come a long way this season, both on and off the pitch.  We now have a ground that many clubs envy, with a playing surface which is better than Twickenhams.  It's a fantastic place to watch rugby and has intensified the atmosphere which the old County Ground had.  Pete Drewett and the coching staff have developed a tremendous team spirit and apart from the loss away to Leeds we're unbeaten since December 9th 2006.  The last home game against Rotherham showed how far the team have come and if that can be taken into the final we've got a great chance of winning it.  The final is a reward for all that hard work and also a reward for the directors and staff who support the team so well.  It's also a big reward for the fans who will have big part to play in the final, as they do in every game.

The first time I ever made the trip to Twickenham was the first time the Chiefs made the same trip for the then Powergen finals. We were drawn against Rotherham who at that time were Division 1 Champions elect and were a full time and very hard squad. We gave them the game of their life that day and though we came away second best it didn't feel like it. The pride of that day turned a loyal fan into an obsessive one. The next time (against Orrell) wasn't so good, for what ever reason the Chiefs underperformed and many fans were left wondering what had gone wrong. 
This time it's very different to both of those times. after a run of enormous success in the latter part of the season and having witnessed the best performance (against Doncaster) that I've seen at Sandy Park there is a real feeling of expectation, not just hope. Anyone would be foolish to believe that any game against the Pirates is going to be easy, but this is the best final we could have hoped for. What does it mean to me? This game will be the culmination of a period of growth the like of which this club has never seen both on and off the pitch. Off the pitch Sandy Park speaks for itself, but more importantly on the pitch, from the dark days of the latter part of last season to the glory of the latter part of this season, there could only be one just result couldn't there?

You may be surprised to hear that the Final actually doesn't mean that much to me. Maybe its because we've been twice before and lost. I see it as a day out and should we win it would be nice to get some silverware. However, I am far more excited about next season with the promise of really challenging for the ND1 title and all that it brings. All the rumours of new signings and the doubling of the Full time playing staff is what is exciting me (Rugby wise) right now !
