Fomer Gillingham captain and manager Andy Hessenthaler has missed out on the managerial vacancy at Brentford. Hessenthaler was one of the favourites for the post but was beaten to the job by Scott Fitzgerald. Hessenthaler was made Gillingham manager in 2000 following then manager Peter Taylor leaving for Leiester City after leading the Gills to promotion to the Championship through the play offs.

Hessenthaler managed Gillingham for every season they were in the second tier of English football, but resigned in November 2004 after a poor start which eventually saw the Gills relegated to League One on the final day of the season.

It was said that 'Mr. Gillingham' was one of the front runners for the post at Brentford but shall now continue in his player coach role at Barnet.

Meanwhile former Gillingham manager John Gorman has resigned as Northampton Town manager. Gorman, who's side defeated Gills at Priestfield earlier this season, claimed the resignation was for personal reasons. Cobbler's chairman David Cardoza said: "We are very sorry that John has had to make this decision.

"We continue to hold John in the highest regard and we wish him all the very best for the future.

"Ian Sampson and Jim Barron will take care of first team affairs as the process begins to find a new manager."
