MATCH REPORT JERSEY RFC 18 v PLYMOUTH ALBION 23 AT ST PETERS 26TH OCTOBER 2013 After a long and somewhat frustrating outward journey from Exeter Airport due to our plane being delayed by 3 hours, everyone remained in good spirits. We arrived at the ground with the weather being very sunny. Once again however there was a real gusty wind which was going to have significant impact for both teams. Game kicked off. Albion secured the ball and used their forwards to advance up the pitch which resulted in R Cushion kicking to the corner putting Albion in a good attacking position. 

14.33 – After more good work by the team T H-Berridge crashed over by the posts giving Albion an early lead in the game.  D Mugford converted putting Albion further ahead (0-7). Jersey clearly set out their stall to try and gain advantage in the set piece scrum.  After Albion infringed at the scrum Jersey scrum half N Griffiths made a superb darting run which resulted in Jersey their first try by the Albion posts. N O’ Connor  levelled the scores (7-7) after converting. Albion remained calm and tried to keep hold of the ball and played possessional rugby and gained territory by placing kicks in the corner deep into the Jersey half.  With the advantage of a strong wind in favour of Jersey in the first half 14.41 after Albion were penalised for crossing Jersey decided to kick for goal from 40 metres plus and were successful going into a 10-7 lead. With the Jersey scrum coming more prominent on 14.45 Albion conceded yet another penalty which resulted in N O’Connor successfully putting Jersey 13-7 ahead. 14.55 After some great work by R Cushion he released a pass putting D Mugford to sprint in to the corner reducing the arrears (13-12) to Jersey.  The conversion was missed. 15.04 After a huge hit on D Mugford it left the Albion fly half flat out and after treatment clearly unable to resume went off and was replaced by D Cusack.  There were further scores and the sides went in at half time (13-12) to Jersey. 15.30 Albion kick off the second half backed by ever increasing wind and at every opportunity Albion’s place kicking were once again giving them good go forward ball.  Just after the re-start D Cusack opted to put Albion into the lead at (13-15) by successfully converting a penalty after Jersey were caught offside. 15.34 After Albion conceded possession Jersey kicked deep into Albion’s 22 and at the resulting line out R Oakley took a Jersey player out resulting in yet again another yellow card.  This put pressure on the remaining 14 players who for me worked their socks off not to concede in the absence of their skipper and proved a major turning point as Jersey did not seem to be able to gain any territory to their advantage. 15.45 Jersey were coming under more pressure and conceded yet another penalty which D Cusack successfully put over putting Albion into a (13-18) lead.  On 15.47 D Williams came off to be replaced by H Tovey and Albion are now back to 15 men on the park.  Albion are now gaining momentum by not conceding whilst down to 14 men.  15.51 Jersey remove their scrum half N Griffiths which surprised a lot of the local support.  On 15.53 a Jersey move broke down and E Grace picks up sprints away and Albion’s full back C Elder sprinted in and put Albion further ahead (13-23). D Cusack missed the conversion. With the clock running down and many changes made by both sides the home support demanded far greater effort from the home team and on 16.05 after a spell of Jersey pressure they managed to score a try reducing the arrears to (18-23).  16.07 Jersey are throwing everything at Albion now, lose possession and Albion kick deep into Jersey’s 22 putting them on the back foot and conceding a scrum for which Albion lose the ball again enabling Jersey to clear their lines.   After another quick break on 14.10 Albion force Jersey back into their own 22 and after kicking the ball out Albion regain possession and kicked the ball out to secure a splendid (18-23) victory to the delight of the travelling support the team celebrated equally having gained a well earned 4 points.  The attendance at today’s game was a healthy 2,216 for which Albion roughly had about 200 supporters who made the journey to the Channel Islands.   This is now 3 wins on the trot and the team can take all the positives into this weekend’s encounter with our south-west rivals from Bristol.  All the Albion squad did the travelling support proud.

From my vantage point, it was your own player that took out Mugford.

Hope he's all ok.

Plymouth deserved the win, Jersey had some awful handling and missed tackles, really didn't show much flair or danger from our back line.

Every time your backs had the ball, it was a case of when they broke through not if.

Hope travelling fans had a good trip over.

In one of our local newspaper reports it mentioned Dan's injury as being caused by an accidental collision with another Albion player.
