Somerset, despite dominating the first half were held to a 24 all draw by Devon in the second tier of county championship, Bill Beaumont South 2. Going into the turn around they had an extra man on the pitch, were 3 – 24 up and looked like they were going to run away with the fixture.

Devon came out ready for the fight bringing the scores level with just minutes left on the clock. Somerset did have an opportunity to win the match with the last kick of the match but the penalty kick went left of the posts leaving the spoils even.
With a high penalty count for the match it was the 7th penalty that gave Devon their only points in the first half thanks to the boot of Dan Munford in the 9th minute. Somerset were quick to turn the table when a quick penalty close to the Devon line which allowed Harry Rowland to crash over the line with Luke Cozens adding the extras.
Somerset piled on the pressure when Jack Claydon made a break down the right before passing inside to Dan Fry to pick up the first of his hat trick tries, Cozens again added two points. Rob Avery-Wright did have a chance to reduce the margin with a penalty but the ball faded to the left.
With just a few minutes left on the first half clock Fry scored his second when the pack fell over the line, this was only awarded after the referee had consulted his assistant.
The second half saw Devon raise their game and despite having Vasile Chirita still in the bin took a quick tap penalty before passing the ball along the line to captain Pete Mortimore to touch down next to the posts in the second minute of the half. This time Avery-Wright made no mistakes to bring Devon 14 points behind.
As the match approached the hour Munford charged down a clearance kick from the Somerset enabling Dylan Flashman to collect and touch down with two points to Avery-Wright. Somerset thought they had scored in the corner a few minutes later but were called back for crossing.
Devon leveled the score with only 2 minutes to go when Winston James broke off the back of a driving maul to touch down on the left and Avery-Wright took the extra two.
Somerset’s stronger pack was not enough to give them the win they thought they had and they must be thinking that should have had more attempts at the posts instead of often taking the scrum option. Devon played some good rugby but failed to make the best use of the ball in hand.
With Kent losing out to Cornwall it looks likely that it will be Kent that gets added to the group next season.
