Saturday i went up to Park View Road to see Welling take on Cambridge City. Here are my thoughts on the afternoon up there and some photos.

Saturday 15^th October with Gravesend up at Tamworth I thought it would be good to go and watch another Kent side doing well in Welling United who play in Conference South.

First time I have been to Park View Road and I have got to say what a great little ground, paid £9 to get in then £2 for a programme which was quite good, A5 size with 40 pages, only downside about it was the amount of adverts in it. Went to “Wings Bar” and had a cheap pint and watched the football on the big screen, nice cosy supporters bar. In there I saw a few Fleet fans and Alan Bond who now goes up there.

 

When the teams came out it wasn’t’ hard to know who’s who. In goal former Fleet player Jamie Turner, in defence Matt Lee, Steve Perkins and Lee Shearer. Midfield was just Lee Gledhill, Rob Owen was dropped and upfront James Pinnock.

Typical Lee Gledhill or Conkers as he was known at Gravesend was in the ref’s book after less than 10 minutes after grabbing hold of a players head in a tackle.

 

Half time came with the score 0-0 but there was a lot of pushing and little scraps that the ref did nothing about. Half time I went and sat in the main stand at PVR which is getting on a bit with the seats being wooden.

 

 

The second half there had to be goals after Welling nearly took the lead a minute into the second half when Pinnock just missed. Then up the other end another former Fleet player Paul Booth ran all the way took it past defenders and keeper but still missed, than a free kick went wide from Boothy from around 20 yards.

Welling went behind after 70 minutes, but equalised in the 89 minute through Danny Kedwell. Final score was 1-1 and they had there biggest attendance this season in 811.

 

Welling look like a team ready to come into The Conference with the players they have got, plus they have just signed former Gills player Barry Ashby who will help them very much in defence.

I would definitely go again to watch them, but hopefully Gravesend will be playing them in either FA Trophy or Kent Cup this season. If not maybe in the league less than a year’s time.
