David Thompson scored his first goal in Bolton colours to help the reserves to a 2-0 success over Sheffield United at Saltergate last night. The former England U21 midfielder struck the winning goal on seventeen minutes and also put in an efficient performance which will do his chances of making the first team no harm at all.

On loan striker Zoltan Harsanyi had earlier given the Wanderers the lead when he placed the ball neatly past experienced goalkeeper Ian Bennett in the eighth minute of the game.

Sheffield mustered up a few chances of their own in the first period but a free kick from Nicky Law and a long range drive from Ahmed Fathi came to nothing as Bolton looked reasonably comfortable.

Visiting goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi was rarely called upon for Bolton during the game but he did well when needed to foil the onrushing Luton Shelton from reducing the two goal defacit just before the hour.

Harsanyi, Thompson and Henrik Pedersen all had attempts to further the Wanderers lead in the second half but a mixture of good goalkeeping and inaccurate shooting spared the Blades blushes.
