Former Bolton Wanderers defender Mike Whitlow could be set to return to the Premiership as part of Sheffield United's coaching staff.

The 39-year old was a mainstay in the Bolton defence between 1997 and 2003 and his commitment both on and off the pitch made him a popular character around the club.

Whitlow made over 130 appearances during his time at the Reebok Stadium before moving onto Sheffield United and then Notts County where he is currently employed as a coach and registered as a player in emergencies.

United boss Neil Warnock has been impressed with Whitlow's abilities as a coach and could take him back to Bramall Lane in the not too distant future providing that compensation can be agreed.

If he moves back to the Yorkshire club then Whitlow will join two old Wanderers favourites in the shape of Brian Kidd and Scott Sellars, both of whom are currently helping out as part of the Blades backroom team.
