Bolton manager Sam Allardyce managed to beat the transfer deadline by bringing in the much travelled midfielder David Thompson from Premiership rivals Portsmouth. The 29-year old has spent the majority of his career in the North West after spells with Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic and his move to the Reebok Stadium will give more competition for places.

Thompson, who also turned out for Swindon Town and Coventry City during the last ten years, has been a target for the Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce for quite some time.

Speaking of his new arrival, Allardyce was hopeful that the Birkenhead-born star could help Bolton achieve their aim of qualifying for European football at the end of the season.

"I have been an admirer of David Thompson for some time. He has the ability to play at this level and will add competition for places in the critical midfield role. He is a tenacious battling midfielder, who has an excellent touch.

"David is excited by the prospect of returning to the North West and helping us attain our goal of European qualification at the end of this season." said Allardyce
