Veteran midfielder Gary Speed says that Bolton Wanderers must invest in a top-class goalscorer if they are to get back into European football. The 36-year old was speaking after seeing the Wanderers lose their first friendly game of the pre-season against Burnley in a contest that saw a number of good chances spurned by the Premiership side.

Speed is in total agreeance with his manager and believes that more goals both at the Reebok Stadium and on the road will help the team to improve and progress in all competitions over the coming years, including getting back into the UEFA Cup.

"Certainly, we need to score more goals home and away if we're to progress up the league, I think that was the case last season and the gaffer earmarked that, so I'm sure he will be be looking to bring someone in." said the former Newcastle star

"The objective is to progress. We were in Europe last season and we're desperately disappointed not to be in it this year.We finished eighth, which was respectable, but we're looking to improve on that this year. Getting back into Europe is the aim"

Bolton have this morning been linked with a move for young Slovenian striker Miran Burgic who plays his club football for NK Gorica. It is beleived that a fee of around £500,000 could tempt Gorica to part with one of their highly rated assets.
