Houlier planned to sign Diao in December but with Gerrard looking set to miss the first few games, Houlier aims to bring him to merseyside a lot sooner than expected.

Houllier hinted earlier this week that Diao was virtually on a plane to England.

"It is true that Diao is leaving Sedan and is expected to arrive in Liverpool in the next few days," a Sedan spokesman said.

Diao signed a five-year long contract with the Reds on June 24th for a reported fee of £4.7million.
