Thompson says the Reds fans owe a huge thank you to the scot who was brilliant in his time at Anfield.

Thompson told the official Liverpool website : "Gary is a fantastic guy and I'd like to pay him a compliment for everything he has done for Liverpool Football Club."

"After missing out on Champions League qualification in 2000, when we choked at Bradford on the last day, Macca showed last season exactly what he could give us.

"He played a very important part in winning the three cups, and I like to think we gave him a great end to his career.

"It was boy's own stuff, the kind of thing you can only dream of as a kid.

"He has been a credit to Liverpool, and I'd like to thank Gary for his contribution and wish himself and his family all the best for the future."
